Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches and staffs paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Departments programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

What it means to

be a bison

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.”

- Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the fall of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 121.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this “Leadership Summit” is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Season Outlook The 2010 season ended with a Patriot League Championship, and the Bucknell softball is looking to get back into championship form after an inconsistent 2011. Although they graduated a strong senior class last year, which included Patriot League Player of the Year Alison Ford, the Bison have more than enough options and versatility up and down the roster to put them back in postseason contention in 2012. “In general, I would say we have a lot of options and flexibility overall. We’re looking to get wins with multiple contributors,” said eighth-year head coach Heather Rakosik. “We’re really looking Alex MacLean early on in the season to find the best chemistry, to really develop everyone’s role on the team and look for those that can handle the pressure and step up to contribute on and off the field.” Bucknell graduated six seniors a year ago, leaving it with a relatively young squad of just one senior, six juniors, five sophomores and seven freshmen. That youth should not be construed as inexperience, however, as every Bison has already had an opportunity to contribute in a number of ways throughout their careers. PITCHER – Experience is one of the strong points of the Bison pitching staff, which returns juniors Alex MacLean and Bridget Gates. The 2010 PL Rookie of the Year and Tournament MVP, MacLean fell just seven strikeouts short of overtaking Bucknell’s single-season record last spring with 116. She also ranks among Bucknell’s top 10 in career games played (10th, 59) and wins (9th, 21), and is just eight innings pitched shy of the top 10 in that category as well. She and Gates are among the program’s all-time leaders in strikeouts as well. Gates recorded a personal-best 85 strikeouts last year and brought her career ERA down to 2.90, the lowest on the 2012 roster. “Alex and Bridget have all the tools to be successful,” said Rakosik of the pitching duo. “They’ve proven in games that they can produce wins and do a lot of things on the field. We’d really like to see them lead from the mound and be a catalyst for the beginning of our success.” Sophomore Courtney Conover made 10 relief appearances in her debut season and is expected to make an even bigger impact this spring. “She’s been working very hard and has really improved her game specifically to adjust for the college hitters and the college game,” said Rakosik. “Courtney is a student of the game and it shows on the field.” CATCHER – There is no shortage of possibilities behind the plate. Anchoring the group is senior captain Meredith Dickson. Despite making just five starts at catcher last season while playing behind recent graduates Elyse Colmenero and Kara Sullivan, Dickson brings a steady leadership to the field. “She’s a player that every coach would want to have on and off the field. She’s put in all the hard work to make herself a stronger player,” praised Rakosik. “We’re looking for her to add to our offense, and give us some RBIs and some versatility with short game and the ability to move runners.” Supporting Dickson will be a pair of freshmen in Kristen Zahn and Alex Wells. Zahn brings valuable offensive power to the table as well as a great knowledge of the game and the ability to push Bucknell’s pitchers. Wells’ strong points include solid fundamentals that will serve her well as she gains experience both in practice and game situations. FIRST BASE – With sophomores Conover and Sophia Geraci and freshmen Nikki Silva and Erin Cox looking to get in the mix, Bucknell will look to fill the first base slot with the player who provides both solid offense and defense most consistently. Spending time behind Ford in the lineup last season, Geraci made 24 appearances and 18 starts at first base. She hit .212 at the plate and showed flashes of things to come. “She is someone who has unbelievable power potential, can hit the long ball, can drive the gaps, and when she’s on, she’s definitely on,” Rakosik said of Geraci. “We’re looking for her to improve from last year and make adjustments on a daily basis. We’d really like to see her come along and be able to help the team score runs and be a leader on the field.” The left-handed Conover will split time between the mound and first and should provide the team with a vocal leadership at both positions. Rakosik identifies Silva as a hard working player who is “not afraid to get dirty, put her nose down and go to work” both offensively and defensively. A clutch hitter, Cox can be counted on to strive for improvement as she begins her career with the Bison.

“She is a player that is looking to perfect her game, and she’s very versatile, too. Erin can do a lot of things, so that makes her a very agile first baseman.” SECOND BASE – As one of Bucknell’s most experienced positions, second base will be covered by Laura Sandford and Mary Horton. Sandford enjoyed additional playing time a year ago, splitting her time at second, shortstop and designated player. The junior did not make a error in the middle infield as she grew into her new role. “She’s leading by example and is definitely a vocal leader,” said Rakosik. “We‘re looking for her to continue to be a confident player on the field and help us offensively. She definitely improved her range and knows the game.” Horton has had a hand in a little bit of everything during her career. In addition to her 20 appearances at second base last spring, the junior also improved her batting average to .287, connected for five doubles, which was the most of any Bucknell non-senior, and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases. “She’s a player that’s fun to watch and can make things happen,” lauded Rakosik. “She’s extremely athletic and one of the hardest workers on the team. Mary has the ability to hit to all fields. We’re looking for her to continue to progress and find the gaps and find ways to get on base to help us with her speed.” SHORTSTOP – Horton will also get a look at shortstop along with sophomore Mallory Lyons and freshman Cydnee Sanders. “We’re looking to really find that mix on the field that can help us and also anchor the infield while giving us some nice offense,” said Rakosik. Lyons made her first 21 career appearances in the field at shortstop before finishing the season primarily at third base. Bucknell will also look for immediate contributions from Sanders. “Cydnee comes in being very experienced at the shortstop position,” said Rakosik. “Her strengths are her quickness and her range. She has a very strong arm. She’s definitely a composed player on the field, which helps at shortstop.” THIRD BASE – Another quartet in Silva, Lyons, Colie Escobar and Kasey Segiel will shore up the hot corner. The veteran of that group, Lyons made 10 of her last 11 field appearances there. “Mallory has a really good glove, good hands and can handle that position,” said the head coach. “Offensively, it’s been really good to see Mallory come along. She’s been putting the work in at practice, and it’s been paying off when it comes to live reps and live at-bats.” To go along with her solid glove, freshman Escobar brings impressive speed and power to the Bison. Bucknell will look to her and Zahn in particular to give the team additional base stealing options. Lyons’ sophomore classmate Segiel, who made three appearances at third base as a rookie, is also expected to break into the lineup more regularly as she continues to gain consistency at the plate. OUTFIELD – The Bison have a corps of eight to choose from when filling in the outfield positions. Among those who will be relied on early are juniors Kathryn Wilkinson and Cassie Greenhawk and sophomore Caryn Connors. Wilkinson returned from a knee injury without missing a beat and saw action at all three outfield positions during her sophomore campaign. “Her footwork just puts her right where she needs to be at this level,” Rakosik praised. “She has an extremely strong arm, and offensively she’s a clutch player.” Greenhawk saw most of her playing time last spring as a pinch runner, but she is no stranger to the outfield having also played all three outfield positions. The speedy Greenhawk provides an offensive weapon for the Bison as well. “She’s a left-handed slapper option,” explained Rakosik. “She’s looking to continue to gain versatility with that, having some power but also reading the defense and doing what needs to be done to place the ball.” A blue-collar player, Connors has moved exclusively to the outfield this season and is looking for her first opportunities in the field. Conover will also see some playing time in the outfield as will Dickson when she’s not behind the plate. Tori Robinson is one of three Bison rookies who are expected to make an outfield contribution. Rakosik praised the California native’s strong softball background. “She has really strong footwork and fundamentals, an accurate arm and tons of power potential at the plate.” While Zahn is the more experienced outfielder of the two, she and Escobar will also be in the mix due to their speed and fundamentals.

Heather Rakosik was hired as the fourth head coach in the history of the Bucknell softball program in 2004 and enters her eighth season at the helm in 2012. When hired, Rakosik had just finished leading Ohio Wesleyan to a recordsetting season. Led by three all-region performers and the first All-American in program history, the Battling Bishops won a school-record 28 games and captured the North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season title for the first time. In three seasons as head coach at OWU, Rakosik’s teams improved their record every year, and she compiled a 60-54-1 overall ledger. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Rakosik led the 2008 Bison to their first Patriot League Tournament in three years on her way to being named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. The postseason appearance came on the heels of close calls in 2006 and 2007 when Bucknell entered the final weekend of regular-season play in playoff contention but fell just short. The 2010 squad earned Bucknell’s third consecutive postseason appearance and was Rakosik’s fourth Patriot League Tournament contender. After guiding the Bison to their second Patriot League Championship trophy, Rakosik led the 2010 team to the program’s first-ever NCAA Championships appearance and a trip to the Columbus, Ohio, Region with California, Ohio State and Kentucky. With a 28-20-1 record at the season’s end, Rakosik’s squad also tied the Bucknell record for most wins in a season. After taking over a Bucknell team that went 14-26 overall and 8-12 in the Patriot League in 2004, she helped the Bison increase their win total to 16 in her first season as they qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the second consecutive year after enduring a three-year hiatus from the postseason. That year Rakosik helped tutor Lauren Wible to a .524 batting average, which led the nation.

Another of Rakosik’s charges, Jessie Snyder, became the program’s first-ever Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award finalist in 2011 in recognition of her commitment in the classroom, on the field and in the community. The last several years Rakosik has expanded the team’s schedule to nearly 50 games in hopes of preparing the team better for Patriot League play. Additionally, she has had the squad begin the season in mid-February, rather than mid-March, as had been the case before her arrival. In addition to her duties as head softball coach at Ohio Wesleyan, Rakosik also served as an instructor in the physical education department as well as assistant women’s basketball coach. She helped guide the team to a winning record in each of her three seasons, highlighted by an NCAC championship and NCAA “Sweet Sixteen” appearance in 2002. Prior to her tenure at Ohio Wesleyan, Rakosik served as head softball coach and assistant women’s basketball coach at Hiram College. There, she led the diamond squad to its best overall record in 11 years. Rakosik is a 1998 graduate of Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. She graduated cum laude with a degree in health and physical education, as well as a K-12 teaching certificate. She also gained valuable athletics experience working as an assistant in the sports information office as well as with the women’s athletic director. As a student-athlete, Rakosik starred in both basketball and softball. On the hardwood she was a 1,000-point scorer (1,378) who broke school records for points (37) and 3-pointers (8) made in a game. She was a First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection in softball and the recipient of the OAC Clyde A. Lamb Scholar-Athlete Award. Her stellar career with the Muskies led to her induction into the Muskingum Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2009. Rakosik went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Defiance (Ohio) College in 2000. While at Defiance, Rakosik also served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the women’s basketball program, helping to guide the team to a 22-5 record and a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. As the head junior varsity coach, she led her team to a 14-3 record. At Bucknell, Rakosik has won more than 100 games in her first seven seasons and in 2008 passed Janelle Breneman for second place on the Bison career wins list. During her first seven years at the helm of the Bison, Rakosik has tutored nine different players to First Team All-Patriot League plaudits, including twotime selections Lauren Litts, Lauren Wible, Elyse Colmenero, Lauren Fry and Alison Ford. Ford was also name the Patriot League Player of the Year in 2011. Additionally, eight other players have earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors and two more have been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, including current Bison Alex MacLean in 2010.

Sam Kszepka, a former All-American player at William Paterson University, was named an assistant softball coach at Bucknell in July 2008. An integral part of the Bison recruiting effort, Kszepka works closely with the Bucknell pitchers and in 2010, she helped guide current Bison pitcher Alex MacLean to Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Patriot League Tournament MVP honors. Kszepka, a highly decorated player during her college career, was a Third Team All-America selection as a utility player in 2002. She was also the New Jersey Athletic Conference and ECAC Player of the Year the same season when she hit a team-best .463 with three home runs and 30 runs batted in and posted a 13-4 record with a miniscule 0.86 ERA. A 2004 graduate of William Paterson with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and movement science, Kszepka broke into coaching at the high school level in 2006 when she was an assistant softball coach at Willingboro High School in New Jersey. The New Egypt, N.J., native also taught health and physical education at Willingboro for two years. Kszepka made the jump to the college level in 2007 when she joined the softball staff at nearby Susquehanna University and helped lead the squad to a solid 16-12 mark. While with the Crusaders she directed workouts for the pitchers, assisted with recruiting and implemented the winter workout and conditioning program. A year later Kszepka moved to Division I Norfolk State as an assistant. There, she was the recruiting coordinator and was in charge of workouts for pitchers, catchers and the outfield for a team that posted 23 victories.

Before joining the Bison, she worked as the Pool & Aquatics Manager at Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh, N.C., and was an intern with the Clemson University Adventure Camp. While at Clemson, McConville taught wilderness safety and ethics as well as served as an instructor in activities such as mountain biking, canoeing, hiking, rock climbing and rafting. Previously, she was a counselor with the New York State Sheriffs’ Associations Summer Camp. Working in conjunction with D.A.R.E. and the New York State Sheriffs’ Department, McConville taught team sports to underprivileged children and educated them on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Sandra Mowery, a former student-athlete at Ohio Wesleyan under current Bison head coach Heather Rakosik, is in her fifth year as an assistant coach with the Bison. Mowery began her tenure as a graduate assistant coach and is now in her third season as a volunteer assistant. Mowery, a native of Euclid, Ohio, was a four-year letterwinner on the Ohio Wesleyan softball team from 2001-04, the last three with Rakosik as her mentor. She served as team captain her senior year, was named First Team All-North Coast Athletic Conference and helped the team to a share of a conference title before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 2004. Following graduation, Mowery was a permanent building substitute teacher at Thomas Jefferson Magnet School, an employee of the Euclid Board of Education and a private tutor for third- and fifth-grade students in subjects ranging from math and science to spelling. In addition to her many experiences in school settings, Mowery spent nearly a decade working for Euclid Parks and Recreation in various roles, including as a sports camp counselor. In 2007, Mowery got her start coaching at the high school level when she served as Euclid High School’s junior varsity softball coach. Mowery recently completed her master’s degree in counseling at Bucknell.

With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 21 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 121 Academic All-Americans in 40 years and 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 21 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka KLARC Front Entrance Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic AllAmericans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields with Becker Field for softball, Emmitt Field for soccer and Graham Field for field hockey and women’s lacrosse, including Holmes Stadium with covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Located on the west side of Route 15, Bucknell’s Becker Field Field is the home venue for the Bison softball team. Adjacent to baseball’s Depew Field, the softball field is a fenced complex that contains a natural grass outfield with a manicured infield. The facility, named in honor of Hall of Famer Dawn Becker’s parents, underwent extensive renovations at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign and included new dugouts, scoreboard, backstop and playing surface. Bucknell owns a 216-206-4 (.512) all-time record on its home field. Becker Field is scheduled to host no fewer than 14 games in 2012, including 12 weekend Patriot League contests. Sojka Pavilion

The Plan for Bucknell/ Recruiting Information The Plan

for

Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies.

Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell.edu/ ThePlanforBucknell.
