Bison Good Sports In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

PATRIOT LEAGUE/MISSION STATEMENT Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had more than 93 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 92 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2013-14 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball APR. • 81 Patriot League teams recorded perfect graduation success rates and 92 earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in APR. • More than 93 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR. • Patriot League teams won NCAA Tournament games in seven different sports, with American winning twice to advance to the Round of 16 in volleyball. • League squads also won NCAA first-round or regional contests in football (Fordham), men’s soccer (Navy), women’s soccer (Boston University), women’s lacrosse (Loyola), softball (Boston University) and baseball (Bucknell). • Navy won the overall Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the second time in three years, while Army took first place on the men’s side and Boston University claimed the women’s title in its inaugural season. • Fifteen student-athletes earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica recognition, including first-team accolades for Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football), Bucknell’s Joe Meyer (Men’s Soccer) and Navy’s Elizabeth Hoerner (Women’s Soccer). • Thirty-five student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. • There were 2,450 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14, including 128 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0. • American women’s basketball standout Alexis Dobbs and Navy women’s soccer star Elizabeth Hoerner both earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and were later named the Patriot League’s nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. • Fordham’s Brett Biestek earned a Postgraduate Scholarship from the FCS Athletic Directors Association. • The Patriot League Sportsmanship Awards went to a pair of basketball student-athletes in American’s Darius Gardner on the men’s side and Army’s Krishawn Tillett for the women. • Lafayette’s Alec Golini (Men’s Soccer) and Lehigh’s Brooke Astor (Women’s Track The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall and Field) earned the Patriot excellence in the 24 sports sponsored by League Outstanding Leaderthe Patriot League, and Bucknell has won ship and Character Awards for their excellence in leadership the Cup 18 times in its 24-year existence, including 14 of the last 17 years. and service. Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the perm sonal growth of students athletes and the general a student body by encours aging personal health, a development, and bald ance among intellectual, a social, civic, and physical s pursuits; by celebrating p challenge and competic tion; and by preparing t participants for service p and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •
•
According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times, including in the most recent survey in the fall of 2013. Bucknell has claimed a league-high 136 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.
•
A total of 402 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 498 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2013-14.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS
A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its eighth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

SEASON PREVIEW The Bucknell field hockey t team has a tough five-game road trip to open the 2014 sseason and how the Bison ccome out of that could set the ttone for the remainder of the sseason. “It’s certainly a big challenge and they’re tough games,” commented Bison g sseventh-year head coach JJeremy Cook. “They are all winnable games, but they are w harder games. They will serve as preparation for our early a Patriot League games against American and Boston U. We A don’t want to start our league d sschedule in an 0-2 hole, so giving ourselves better tests g LIZ WILLS early should set us up to be e ssuccessful.” Bucknell is coming off a season in which it faced five ranked opponents, posted an 8-10 overall record, was 4-2 in Patriot League play and qualified for the league’s postseason tournament for a sixth consecutive year. “Every year we take a step forward in terms of our structure and difficulty rating of what we’re trying to do on the field,” mentioned Cook. “Every year we make decisions on how to balance smashing the ball up the field vs. building an attack and trying to manipulate a defense. We are now at the point where we are better at possessing the ball in small areas and creating some disorganization from the defense and exploiting that.” The Bison, who were picked to finish third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, this year will be led by team captains and Preseason AllPatriot League picks Kelsey Mucelli and Liz Wills. A two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection, Mucelli notched three assists and started all 18 games a year ago. Wills posted two goals and three assists to rank fifth on the team with seven points in 2013. “Both Kelsey and Liz are playing really good hockey,” noted Cook, who has guided the Bison to 55 wins since taking over the program in 2008. “They are two of our most experienced players on the team and we expect a lot out of them. They know that and are prepared to have an outstanding season.” Fellow senior Cassie Lawrence has really impressed Cook throughout the preseason. The forward earned 15 starts a year ago and posted one goal and two assists.
6
“Cassie is phenomenal,” praised an enthusiastic Cook. “She spent all summer working out with our strength and conditioning staff while she was here working in the engineering department. She is really athletic and has grown as a player.” Cook also singled out senior Amie Pritchard as another veteran who has been strong this preseason. She has played in all 57 games over the last three seasons and her lone goal last year came against game one opponent Rutgers. “Amie is explosive out of the back and has learned a lot in terms of how to play her position,” said Cook. “She is one of the few players who hasn’t changed positions during her career and that’s because of how well she plays in the back. She knocks her position out of the park and is as fast as lightning with the ball.” The team’s leading distributor in 2013 with four assists was senior Maggie Murphy and Cook expects her to play a big role at right wing or right midfield this season. Up front along with Lawrence will be juniors Abby Watson and Kiersten Sydnor, the top two returning scorers from last year with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Watson totaled six goals and three assists despite starting just four times, while Sydnor has two-goal outings against both Missouri State and Lehigh last fall. “Abby is filling [the graduated] Rachel Misko’s spot and has changed it into more of a distribution role to fit with her strengths,” commented Cook. “Kiersten’s confidence has grown and grown and grown and she had an outstanding preseason. She scored a goal in our scrimmage against Toronto and will continue to provide that offensive spark.” Sophomore Amy Mucelli, the younger sister of Kelsey, will continue to be a factor in the midfield after appearing in all 18 games a year ago, while junior midfielder Kayla Sullivan is now healthy after missing a significant chunk of last year with an injury after a promising rookie campaign. Cook envisions junior Emily Hitchings to be on the outside right side. She has 20 career starts under her belt and has plenty of experience. “Emily’s communication has been wonderful,” noted Cook. “She has been making better and faster decisions than ever.” Junior Shannon Keen is expected to be the starting goalie heading into the season after serving as backup to All-Patriot League selection Erica Perrine the last two years. The Hatfield, Pennsylvania, native has played nearly 70 career minutes over three games. “Shannon has really lived up to what we expected of her,” commented Cook. “She worked hard in the summer in terms of her quickness and staying fit. She is communicating very well and is playing with a ton of confidence. She is saving the ones that need to be saved.” Cook is a little unsure of what to expect of the Bison this year as the squad lost its center forward, a center mid and goalkeeper from last year, but he is pleased that three defenders, three midfielders and the last two team MVPs return.

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a studentathlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Meghan Dawson joined the Bison program during the summer of 2013. A two-time national champion at North Carolina, Dawson brings a history of success as both a player and coach to the Bucknell sideline. Dawson graduated from North Carolina in 2011 with a degree in communications. During her time with the Tar Heels, the defender and Berlin, New Jersey, native helped the team to NCAA National Championship titles in 2007 and 2009 as well as additional Final Four appearances in 2010 and 2011. As a junior she received AllNCAA Tournament honors as the team finished runner-up nationally, adding to a resume that also included two selections to the All-South Region team. After leaving North Carolina, Dawson played with the United States Field Hockey Developmental Squad and added to her coaching resume. While in Chapel Hill, she served as coach of the Carolina All-Star Field Hockey Club U16 team in 2012. She later returned to her high school alma mater, volunteering with Eastern Regional and helping the team to a Group IV State Championship. It was her fifth state title with the team as she also won four NJSIAA State Championships as a player before having her Eastern Regional jersey retired. In the last year, Dawson has split her time coaching the Spirit of USA Field Hockey Club in Berlin, N.J., and working with Harrow Sports as a sales consultant in Denver. Dawson is not the only member of her family to have success on the field hockey turf. One of eight siblings, Meghan’s sister, Rachel, was the 2007 National Player of the Year at North Carolina, and sisters Natalie and Sarah played at Iowa. All three have been members of the U.S. National Team during their careers. Her younger sister Melanie also played at North Carolina.
Former University of New Hampshire standout Hannah Richard joined the Bison coaching staff in the summer of 2014. The two-time Second Team All-America East selection graduated from New Hampshire earlier that year with a degree in kinesiology: sports studies and a minor in business administration. A Hopkinton, New Hampshire, native, Richard played in more than 80 games in her four-year career with the nationally ranked Wildcats. She totaled 29 goals and five assists while garnering nearly 50 starting assignments. Richard netted one goal in a 3-0 New Hampshire victory over Bucknell in October 2013. In addition to her high level of play, Richard has extensive camp coaching experience, having worked at a host of camps all over the northeast over the last five years. HISTORY Academic Honors As it has become accustomed to, the Bucknell field hockey team garnered a number of academic honors in 2013. The Bison were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) for posting a team grade-point average of better than 3.0 and 13 team members earned positions on the NFHCA National Academic Squad. Additionally, a number of Bison were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for GPAs above 3.20 during the 2013 fall semester and three were Academic All-Patriot League honorees. Earning further distinction was Rachel Misko, the Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first three years, and much more is planned in 2014-15. Approximately 60 student-athletes particpate in Leadership Academy programming each year.

The Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
