Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches and staffs paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Departments programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

what it means to be a bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” - Chris ty Mathew son, in his book won in the ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •
•
According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014. All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.
•
Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.
•
A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 319 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 semester.
•
In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS
A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Season Outlook The Bucknell softball team has reason to be optimistic as it gets set to open the 2016 season. Courtnay Foster’s first year as the Bison head coach will feature a team that returns its entire pitching staff from a squad that has placed second in the Patriot League Tournament in each of the past two seasons, as well as a solid group of returning players and talented freshman class. The Bison will get their first chance to show the results of their offseason and preseason work as they travel to Greenville North Carolina to play five games at East Carolina’s Pirate Clash on Feb. 19-21.They will play three games against the host team and one apiece against Saint Francis and Massachusetts. “The team has looked awesome in practice and is extremely anxious to get outdoors and on to a field,” Foster said. “They are doing some things really well right now. Our pitching staff has honed in their skills in the past two or three weeks and I feel good about them. Our defense looks great, too. We have really been communicating well. “Our mantra going into the opening weekend is just to win the next game. That is all that we can control. We want to put all of our energy and all of our focus into winning the next pitch, winning the next inning and winning the next game, because championships aren’t won in a weekend or in a day.” Leading that pitching staff is a pair of experienced and accomplished players in seniors Amanda Fazio and Dana Nielsen. The two have combined for 174 appearances and 125 starts during their career. Both players will finish their careers near the top of all of the major categories in the school’s record book. Fazio enters the season as one of the team’s two Preseason All-Patriot League selections. She earned Second Team All-Patriot League recognition in her rookie season and is coming off a junior year in which she set program records in wins (19) and strikeouts (164). Fazio now ranks third all-time in strikeouts with 327 and fifth in wins with 33. Nielsen is coming off her best season at Bucknell, which included two Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honors. She finished with an outstanding 13-4 record and a team-best 3.13 ERA. One of Nielsen’s many strengths in the circle is her control. She finished with 82 strikeouts to just 29 walks. “There are a lot of things about this job that I feel grateful for and feel lucky to have stepped into, but have an entire pitching staff returning is certainly near the top of the list,” said Foster, who will also have returning pitchers Paulina Gutkin, Taylor Langtry, Lara Bean and Cindy Cherness on the roster. “We’ve got some leadership, we have experience and we have some young players who are doing good things. All of those things usually bode well for a good pitching staff. They worked really hard and have command of their pitches right now.You can’t really ask for much more beyond that.” Foster also believes the pitching staff has helped the team’s offense during the preseason. “We have been able to see a lot of pitches because of the amount of pitchers we have on our staff,” Foster said. “I think that’s a big advantage for us.You don’t have a choice but to feel confident going into the first weekend, but I think we have very good reason to feel that way. We have worked hard and are gelling as a team right now.” The Bucknell lineup lost three starters to graduation, but those three players accounted for a huge chunk of the team’s production. Cydnee Sanders, the program’s all-time hits leader, Kristen Zahn, the school’s all-time RBI leader, and Erin Cox, the team’s leader in home runs last season, combined for 166 of the team’s 420 hits, 117 of its 232 RBIs and 14 of its 19 home runs. Those players will be tough to replace, but the Bison do return eight players that started at least 23 games last season, including Preseason All-Patriot League selection Jacee Almond at second base. Almond is a two-time Second Team All-Patriot League honoree.Through just two seasons, she already ranks 10th all-time at Bucknell with 10 home runs, halfway to the program record of 20 set by Lauren Litts (2004-07). The loss of the three mainstays in the lineup has created positive competition for numerous starting spots, something Foster says will benefit the team as the season goes on. “We have a least a couple of players at every position. That has made it so we have been able to have some really dynamic practices with being able to move a lot of players around to different places. It’s been really helpful to get those players a lot of reps in different roles and different positions. I think we could throw the kitchen sink at this team and they would be ready for it.” Another one of the top returning hitters for Bucknell is sophomore Meghan Kovac. She started all 55 games of her rookie season and hit .276 with 10 doubles, one triple and one home run. She stepped up big in the
4
postseason, helping the Bison advance to the championship game with a .500 batting average and three extra-base hits in four games of the tournament. That resulted in Patriot League All-Tournament recognition. Fazio is a dual-threat player for the Bison, also serving as a hitter near the top of the team’s lineup. She had the highest batting average (.341) of any returning Bison player and set the school’s single-season record with 26 stolen bases. She has 32 stolen bases for her career, which ranks fifth on the program’s all-time list. Her battery mate, Christina Martinez, also returns after taking over the starting catching spot early last season. Carolyn Wan, Mariah Midyette, Chaylen Andolino, and Maddie Minneci give the Bison a large group of players with starting experience. The coaching staff is also excited about the early progress of the team’s freshmen. “Our freshman class is tremendously athletic so I feel pretty good about where they’re at offensively right now,” Foster said. “They’re seeing the ball well and they’re using their skills to the fullest extent. But it’s always a question mark until you get out onto the field and you have someone other than your own teammates in the other dugout. As long as our young players can control their nerves through those first few innings and as long as our experienced players continue to do what they have been doing in a leadership capacity, I don’t see any reason why we can’t go out and be really successful.” Foster knows that success won’t come easy in an always improving Patriot League. “This team is pretty hungry coming off of a couple of second-place finishes so we would like to be at the top of the pack at the end of the year,” Foster said. “Obviously, Lehigh is going to be strong like they are every year. Their coaching staff is extremely experienced and we have a lot of respect for them. There are always dogfights in conference play, so looking around the league we know it’s going to be a tough win every time we take the field.” Bucknell’s conference series against Holy Cross, Army West Point and Lehigh are its only nine home games of the season. The Bison will go on the road for league play with series at Lafayette, Boston University and Colgate. “I am grateful for what this team has done to get ready for the season,” Foster said. “They have embraced everything we have asked them to do and have embraced the idea of winning as a team. Every single player is going to help us win this year and I think that’s something really special. I don’t think it’s something you can say about every team you are a part of. My assistant coaches have also been great. I don’t think I could ask for a better situation.”

COACH FOSTER Courtnay FOSTER
Head Coach
Northwestern ’06 | 1st season At Bucknell: 0-0 Courtnay Foster is set to begin her first season at Bucknell after being announced as the head softball coach in July. She comes to Lewisburg after a five-year stint as an assistant coach at Northwestern, where she was also an outstanding pitcher during her playing career from 2003-06. “I am excited to welcome Courtnay Foster to the Bison Athletics family,” said Bucknell athletic director John Hardt. “Courtnay has spent the last five years coaching high-caliber student-athletes in a nationally-ranked Big Ten program. Northwestern is an institution that prioritizes the scholar-athlete model, just as we do here at Bucknell, and Courtnay has been very successful recruiting and mentoring student-athletes in that rigorous environment. She was also a standout performer herself, having earned All-America honors as a pitcher at Northwestern. The Bucknell softball team has contended for Patriot League championships in recent years, and I am confident that under Courtnay’s leadership, the program will continue its success.” “It is with great excitement that I join the Bison community,” said Foster. “I am honored and eager to have the opportunity to join a department that is as committed and passionate about the studentathlete experience as Bucknell. I am truly grateful to Northwestern athletics, in particular my mentor, Kate Drohan, and department leader Dr. Jim Phillips for allowing me to develop as a coach and colleague as I prepare for my next endeavor as a head coach. I would also like to express my appreciation for John Hardt and the hiring committee at Bucknell for their generosity in this process. I

couldn’t be more proud to be joining the Bison family and sharing the experience of the bright young women at Bucknell.” Northwestern was a model of consistency during Foster’s five years with the program, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Tournament three times and never finishing below .500 despite going against some of the top competition in the country. The Wildcats finished 28-23 last season and received an at-large berth to the NCAA Regional due in large part to having the second-toughest non-conference schedule in the nation. They also made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2014. Foster played a key role in the development of two of the Big Ten’s top pitchers over her five seasons. Kristen Wood led the conference in strikeouts and ranked in the top 20 nationally in strikeouts per seven innings in 2014, while Amy Letourneau did the same in 2013. Foster’s role at Northwestern wasn’t limited to pitching instruction, as she also spent time on the recruiting trail. She helped the Wildcats tie a school record with five All-Region selections in 2015, just one year after the team had six honorees in 2014. A communication studies major, Foster earned her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern in 2006. She was one of the best pitchers in school history, compiling an 80-37 record with a 1.49 ERA and 1,014 strikeouts during an impressive career that was highlighted by an All-America selection in 2005. She finished her collegiate career on a high note, leading the Wildcats to the College World Series, where she struck out 13 batters in 4.2 innings of relief to earn the win against Alabama in the opening round. She wrapped up her career as a three-time All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten selection and added two NFCA All-Mideast Region honors. Following her playing career, Foster was drafted by the Philadelphia Force of National Professional Fastpitch in 2006. She instead went on to work one year at Northwestern as a volunteer assistant before playing semi-professional softball in Italy in 2009.

Marissa MYERS
ASSISTANT COACHES
Assistant Coach
Clarion ’10 | 3rd season Marissa Myers joined the Bucknell softball staff as an assistant coach during the fall of 2014. A standout catcher at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Myers spent the previous two years as an assistant at Tufts University, helping lead the Jumbos to the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championship title. Bucknell has made two straight appearances in the Patriot League championship game in Myers’ two seasons with the team. She helped guide the squad to the title game as a third seed in her first season, and then followed that up by playing an integral role as the team set a program record for wins (35) and made the championship game as the second seed in 2015. In Myers’ time with the Jumbos, the squad won back-to-back NESCAC championship titles and Regional championship titles. Tufts earned also earned a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament in both of her years with the team, finishing fifth in 2012 before winning the national championship the following year. Myers was part of a staff that was selected as the Regional Coaching Staff of the Year in 2012 and 2013, as well as the NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2013. Myers’ responsibilities while at Tufts were numerous, as she helped plan and execute practices, worked specifically with the infielders and pitchers, made travel arrangements, put on camps and actively recruited for the Jumbos. Off the diamond, she served as the Assistant Director of Intramurals at Tufts, running the program in the fall and spring, and also took post-baccalaureate classes in education at the university. Prior to her time at Tufts, Myers spent one season as the assistant softball coach at Penn-Trafford High School in Harrison City, Pa. She served as the head coach of the junior varsity squad, and also assisted with all facets of the program at the varsity level. A strong athlete herself, Myers was a four-year letterwinner and starting catcher on the Clarion University softball team. The winner of the Outstanding Dedication to Softball Award in 2010, she ranked fourth on Clarion’s all-time walks list at the time of her graduation. Myers graduated from Clarion with honors in 2010, receiving a bachelor of science degree in elementary education with concentrations in coaching and sports management.
Brie CARMACK
Assistant Coach
Jacksonville ’11 | 1st season Brie Carmack is set to begin her first season as an assistant coach with the Bucknell softball program. She joins the Bison staff after spending one season on the staff at Covenant College. Covenant College, a Division III school and member of the USA South Athletic Conference, registered 11 wins during Carmack’s one season as an assistant coach. Prior to that, she spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Eastern Illinois. During her time there, the Panthers won the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference championship and finished 2014 with a 38-17 overall record. Carmack earned her master’s degree in sports administration, kinesiology and sport studies while coaching at Eastern Illinois. She received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Jacksonville University in 2011. While at Jacksonville, she was a member of the softball team and twice received Atlantic Sun AllAcademic honors, as well as NFCA All-Academic recognition. “I am confident that Brie will step in as our second assistant and make an immediate impact,” said Bucknell head coach Courtnay Foster. “She will work with our offense and outfield, while also contributing to recruiting efforts. She is eager and ambitious, and I believe her skills and knowledge will balance our staff and elevate our team.”

Facilities Becker Field
Kinney Natatorium
The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 25 years, national leadership in graduation rates in 2015, 126 Academic All-Americans since 1970 and 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 25 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy MathewsonMemorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and new indoor instructional facility; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the Becker Field softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Located on the west side of Route 15, Bucknell’s Charles & Karen Becker Field is the home venue for the Bison softball team. Adjacent to baseball’s Depew Field, the softball field is a fenced complex that contains a natural grass outfield with a manicured infield. The facility, named in honor of Hall of Famer Dawn Becker’s parents, underwent extensive renovations at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign and included new dugouts, scoreboard, backstop and playing surface. The Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where more than 3,500 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.
Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities,
The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy
Training Bison Student-Athletes to Become Effective Leaders in Academics, in Athletics, and in Life Competitive sports at Bucknell dates back to 1870, and more than a century later Bucknell has established itself as a national leader in providing successful academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes. Today, the Department of Athletics & Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence among all intercollegiate programs by maintaining academic priorities and supporting educational and personal development, all while providing the rigorous and competitive Division I athletics opportunity sought by Bucknell student-athletes. As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. ABOUT THE PROGRAM • In the summer of 2011 the Bucknell Department of Athletics & Recreation implemented a formal leadership development program. • Initial workshops were facilitated by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center. • As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, the program is designed to help studentathletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. • Initially, a group of 60 student-athletes were identified as members. These workshops for both student-athletes and their coaches have set the stage for ongoing programming that will encompass the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. • In the spring of 2016, Lauren Cavallaro was hired as the University’s first associate director of athletics for leadership development. Cavallaro holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. GOALS FOR THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Help young best athletes become best leaders • Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders • Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders • Practice leading self, their class, and below • Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders • Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff • Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support • Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime
