WITH A VICTORY THE BISON WOULD... • take a 3-1 series lead over Sacred Heart • improve to 1-1 in non-conference action this season • move to 16-9 all-time against Northeast Conference teams • give Joe Susan a win in his 100th career game as a collegiate head coach BUCKNELL AT A GLANCE • The Bison are currently 0-1 (0-0 Patriot League) on the season following their tight 14-7 loss to William & Mary. • Bucknell finished 2017 with a 5-6 (2-4 PL) record. The Bison, who took sixth in the Patriot League a year ago, were chosen to tie for fifth with Lafayette in the 2018 preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. • Bucknell returns a total of 41 letterwinners in 2018. That group includes 14 seniors, 17 juniors and 10 sophomores. Eight seniors—WR Alan Butler, DL Alex Jordan, S Joe Lauro, CB Bryan Marine, CB Fisayo Oluleye, TE/FB Andrew Owers, P Alex Pechin and LB Matt Robinson—are three-time letterwinners. • OL Pat Finn, Lauro, Marine and Pechin are serving as team captains in 2018. • The Bison have led the Patriot League in total defense six of the past seven seasons, including five years in a row from 2011 to 2015. In 2017, they finished fourth nationally in passing defense (148.3) and 11th in total defense (294.6). • Bucknell returns its top passer (John Chiarolanzio, 1,069 yards) from a year ago. The Bison lost their top receiver (Jack Horan, 377 yards) and top two tacklers (Ben Richard, 77, and Mark Pyles, 73) to graduation and their top rusher (Chad Freshnock, 525 yards) to a season-ending injury. INSIDE THE WILLIAM & MARY BOX SCORE • The Bison defense stood tall all night, but the Tribe prevailed, 14-7, thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown. • On the first play of the fourth quarter, DE Joe Schiano came up with a strip sack to give Bucknell the ball at William & Mary’s 36-yard line. Five plays later, RB Marquis Carter scampered 12 yards into the end zone; a good extra point by K Jack Chambers made it a 7-7 game. • The Tribe was quick to respond. On the second play of its next drive, QB Shon Mitchell connected with WR DeVonte Dedmon for a 75-yard score that proved to be the difference in the game. • QB John Chiarolanzio finished with 143 yards on 20-for-32 passing, connecting with eight different receivers. • WR Brandon Sanders, a freshman, led all Bison with 59 yards on four receptions. On the ground, Carter ran for a career-best 81 yards on 18 carriers. • Defensively, S Joe Lauro (11) and CB Bryan Marine (10) reached the double digits in tackles. Four Bison recorded a sack: Schiano, DE Blake Fletcher, LB Simeon Page and DE Nnamdi Unachukwu. • William & Mary held advantages in total offense (348-257), first downs (20-11) and time of possession (37:25-22:35). Bucknell chipped into its deficit during the second half; at halftime, the Tribe was up 226-93 in total offense, 15-3 in first downs and 22:43-7:17 in time of possession. SACRED HEART AT A GLANCE • The Pioneers are currently 1-0 (0-0 Northeast Conference) on the season following their 35-6 victory over Lafayette. • QB Kevin Duke went 17-for-22 for 146 yards and two touchdowns while RB Jordan Meachum rushed for a career-best 132 yards on 17 carries. WR Andrew O’Neill added 103 yards and one touchdown on nine receptions. • Sacred Heart finished 2017 with a 4-7 (2-4 NEC) record. The Pioneers, who tied Wagner for fifth in the NEC a year ago, were picked to place sixth in the 2018 preseason poll. • Sacred Heart returned six offensive starters, including Duke and O’Neill, and three defensive starters.

BISON SCHOLAR-ATHLETES • In 2017, P Alex Pechin became the eighth Bison to be honored as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was joined on the Academic All-Patriot League Team by three seniors, giving Bucknell double the number of selections as the other Patriot League teams. It was also the highest number of Bison voted to the 14-man squad since 2010, when four were honored. • Bucknell placed a program-record 48 student-athletes on the 2017 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Previously, the record stood at 46, which was set the year before. • The team combined for a 3.09 GPA during the 2017 fall semester, bolstered by FB Cinjun Erskine (now a student assistant coach) and LB Rick Mottram’s perfect 4.0s.

INSIDE THE 2018 SCHEDULE • This is the 133rd season of football at Bucknell. The Bison played their first game in 1883 and have played continuously since 1887. • Nine of Bucknell’s 11 opponents from 2017 remain on its 2018 schedule, with Penn and Villanova taking the place of Marist and Cornell. The Bison have faced the two new additions to their slate a combined 59 times but most recently took on the Quakers in 2010 and the Wildcats in 2005. • Bucknell’s 2018 opponents went a combined 50-72 (.410) in 2017. Of that group, Monmouth (9-3), Colgate (7-4) and Penn (6-4) finished at or above .500. At 5-6, the Bison had a better 2017 record than seven of their opponents and matched one other’s mark. • Two of the Bison’s 2018 foes reached the 2017 NCAA FCS Playoffs. Lehigh fell to Stony Brook, 59-29, while Monmouth was dispatched by Northern Iowa, 46-7, in the first round. • Bucknell’s five non-conference opponents hail from four different conferences: the Big South Conference (Monmouth), the Colonial Athletic Association (Villanova and William & Mary), the Ivy League (Penn) and the Northeast Conference (Sacred Heart). • The Bison entered the campaign with a 151-244-12 (.371) record against their 2018 opponents, including winning marks against Fordham (18-15), Georgetown (18-11-1) and Sacred Heart (2-1). GAME NOTES • The 46-yard field goal was eight yards longer than K John Burdick’s previous career long. It capped a perfect night for him, as he made both of his field-goal attempts and all four of his point-after bids to finish with a career-high 10 points. • P Alex Pechin averaged a career-high 48.4 yards on nine attempts to round out a big night for the Bison kickers. • QB John Chiarolanzio set career highs in passing yards (187), completions (21) and attempts (34) in his first 2017 start. He also matched his career-long rush with a 17-yard run that helped set up RB Chad Freshnock’s fourth-quarter touchdown. • In his first game as one of Bucknell’s captains, RB Joey DeFloria rushed for a season-best 80 yards and two touchdowns. • A trio of Bison reached the double figures in tackles: LB Ben Richard (15), LB Mark Pyles (12) and S Joe Lauro (10). Through the first three games, Bucknell’s single-season high in tackles was eight. • Richard also recovered a fumble while Lauro and S Aaron Brown picked off passes. • Richard made his 200th career tackle during the game while Pechin recorded his 100th career punt. • With the win, their second at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in 2017, the Bison exceeded their home win total from 2016 and 2015.

John Burdick’s Last-Second Field Goal Lifts Bucknell Football to 34-31 Win John Burdick booted a career-best 46-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Bucknell football team to a thrilling 34-31 victory over Sacred Heart at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Joey DeFloria rushed for two touchdowns, Chad Freshnock added another, and John Chiarolanzio threw for 187 yards and a touchdown in his first start of the campaign to help the Bison improve to 2-2. Sacred Heart (2-2) rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 31 apiece when Kevin Duke found Lawrence Nembhard for a 41-yard touchdown with 4:12 remaining in regulation. The Pioneers forced a Bison punt and advanced the ball near midfield, but Ben Richard and Nick Zarkoski teamed up to stuff Duke inches short of a first down on a 4th and 1, giving the Bison a chance to win it. A 24-yard pass from Chiarolanzio to Marcus Ademilola on 3rd-and-8 put the Bison into field goal range, but an incompletion, a one-yard loss and a holding penalty pushed them back to the Sacred Heart 35. Then, Matt Muh, in at quarterback after Chiarolanzio was shaken up, hit Jack Horan for a six-yard gain to the 29 with two seconds remaining. After the Pioneers called two timeouts to ice the kicker, Burdick drilled the 46-yard field goal and sprinted to the opposite end zone in celebration while the bench emptied in pursuit. At the end of the first quarter, Bucknell held a 14-0 advantage. The Bison opened the scoring with 10:45 on the clock when Chiarolanzio found a wide-open Horan for a 38-yard touchdown. Less than two minutes later, after Trevor Fennimore forced a fumble and Ben Richard recovered it at the Sacred Heart 16, DeFloria capped the abbreviated drive with a 12-yard touchdown run. Early in the second quarter, the Bison extended their lead to 17-0 on a 30-yard Burdick field goal. The Pioneers got on the board with 1:38 left in the frame, with Josh Freiria capping a 12-play, 73-yard drive with a 34-yard field goal. Just when it looked like Bucknell would carry a two-touchdown lead into the locker room, Kevin Barry picked off a Chiarolanzio pass and raced 60 yards for a score with just 58 seconds on the clock. The Pioneers carried the momentum from Barry’s pick six into the third quarter, with Ezekiel Ennis returning the opening kickoff 98 yards for a score that tied the game at 17 apiece. On Sacred Heart’s next drive, Aaron Brown intercepted a Duke pass and returned it 19 yards to the Pioneer 13. The Bison took advantage; DeFloria again did the honors, rushing three yards for a score. After the teams traded three and outs, Bucknell took over with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter. Chiarolanzio appeared to hit Alex Twiford for a 48-yard touchdown, but an illegal block in the back penalty brought the ball back to the Sacred Heart 40. The Bison then marched to the red zone, with Chiarolanzio breaking free for a 17-yard gain that brought them to the three-yard line just as time expired in the quarter. Freshnock ultimately punched the ball into the end zone from one yard out 41 seconds into the final fame, giving the Bison a 31-17 lead. The Pioneers cut Bucknell’s edge to a touchdown on their next drive, covering 79 yards in six plays. After Duke found Byron Barney for a 47-yard gain, Eli Terry scampered 11-yards for a score that made it a 31-24 game.

GAME NOTES • With the loss, the Bison had their winning streak in season openers snapped at seven games. They are now 7-2 in season openers under head coach Joe Susan. • Bucknell moved to 92-40-1 in season openers and 97-34-1 in home openers all time. • This was the first time the Bison held the Tribe under 30 points; William & Mary dispatched Bucknell by a combined margin of 183-45 in their previous five meetings, an average spread of 27.6 points. • S Joe Lauro made his 150th career tackle and 100th career solo tackle during the game. • QB John Chiarolanzio started his first career season opener; the junior had started eight games previously but never Bucknell’s first of the season. • WR Brandon Sanders was the lone freshman to start the 2018 opener. He ultimately led the Bison with 59 receiving yards on four catches, bolstered by a 21-yard reception on Bucknell’s final drive of the game. • Six Bison earned their first career start in the 2018 opener: RB Marquis Carter, OL Justis Peppers, DE Sean Naiman, LB Matt Robinson, Sanders and DL Jimmy Sheehan. Sheehan, a junior, and Peppers, a sophomore, had yet to appear in a game before their start against William & Mary.

The Bucknell football team’s defense stood tall all night, but William & Mary prevailed, 14-7, in the season opener for both teams at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Tribe entered the fourth quarter with a 7-0 lead thanks to an early touchdown. On the first play of that frame, Joe Schiano came up with a strip sack to give the Bison the ball at William & Mary’s 36-yard line. Five plays later, Marquis Carter scampered 12 yards into the end zone; a good extra point by Jack Chambers made it a 7-7 game. But the Tribe was quick to respond. On the second play of its next drive, Shon Mitchell connected with DeVonte Dedmon for a 75-yard score that proved to be the difference in a defensive battle played in front of 5,042 fans. After Dedmon’s go-ahead touchdown, Bucknell had three drives and advanced as far as William & Mary’s 36-yard line. Near the middle of the frame, John Chiarolanzio led the Bison from their one-yard line to their 47 in 12 plays, but a fumble ultimately stalled that promising possession. Bucknell later got the ball back with 1:14 left to play, and Chiarolanzio found Brandon Sanders for a 21-yard gain and Jared Cooper for a 10-yard gain on back-to-back plays to bring the Bison faithful to their feet. But the game ended when Cooper caught a pass over the middle and was tackled in bounds short of a first down. On that play, a Bucknell player was injured; because there was 10 seconds left on the clock and Bucknell was out of timeouts, the game came to an end on the 10-second runoff rule. The Tribe controlled the first quarter, using a lengthy game-opening drive to build a 10:46 to 4:14 edge in time of possession. William & Mary’s first touchdown came at the 6:13 mark, with Mitchell capping a 15-play, 68-yard drive that began 11 seconds into the game with a two-yard quarterback keeper score. Early in that drive, Albert Funderburke rushed for 14 yards and Owen Wright dashed for a 13-yard gain on back-to-back plays to bring the Tribe from its 44 to the Bison 29. Bucknell had an opportunity to tie the game on its next possession after Chiarolanzio orchestrated a seven-play, 54-yard drive to William & Mary’s 21-yard line. Isaiah Laster ultimately intercepted a Chiarolanzio pass intended for Stefone Moore-Green in the corner of the end zone to keep the Bison off the board. During the second quarter, the teams traded possessions, one of which ended in a Tribe missed field goal, before William & Mary rattled off another long march. From the 10:54 to the 1:44 mark of that quarter, the Tribe traversed 55 yards in 16 plays, most of which were short rushes. But that drive came to an end at Bucknell’s 10-yard line after Fisayo Oluleye forced Funderburke out of bounds for a loss of four yards and then picked off a Mitchell pass in the end zone. After forcing a quick three and out, William & Mary got the ball back with 1:18 remaining in regulation. The Tribe had a 43-yard Dedmon touchdown catch called back due to an illegal block with 16 seconds left to play, and the Bison went to the locker room down by only a touchdown despite being outgained 226-93 and having the ball for just seven minutes and 17 seconds. Chiarolanzio finished with 143 yards on 20-for-32 passing, connecting with eight different receivers. Sanders, a freshman, led all Bison receivers with 59 yards on four receptions. On the ground, Carter ran for a career-best 81 yards on 18 carriers; he also posted 13 receiving yards on three catches. Defensively, Joe Lauro (11) and Bryan Marine (10) reached the double digits in tackles. Four Bison recorded a sack: Schiano, Blake Fletcher, Simeon Page and Nnamdi Unachukwu. Schiano and Unachukwu were both making their collegiate debut. William & Mary held advantages in total offense (348-257), first downs (20-11) and time of possession (37:25-22:35). Bucknell chipped into its deficit during the second half; at halftime, the Tribe was up 226-93 in total offense, 15-3 in first downs and 22:43-7:17 in time of possession
