In 2016, RB Chad Freshnock was a threetime Rookie of the Week pick. • Jonov intercepted a pass on Marist’s first drive of the game and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown. He was part of a backfield that limited the Red Foxes to 130 yards through the air. • This is Jonov’s first Bison of the Week nod. He was previously named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Nov. 17, 2014 after recording two interceptions, two pass breakups and two tackles in a 34-21 overtime win at Holy Cross. • In 2016, LB Ben Richard (Sept. 4), RB Joey DeFloria (Oct. 9) and DL Abdullah Anderson (Oct. 23) received Bison Athlete of the Week accolades. Bucknell Posts 21-20 Comeback Victory at Holy Cross Joey DeFloria rushed 28 times for 149 yards and a touchdown, Chad Freshnock ran for a pair of second-half touchdowns and Will Carter broke Bucknell’s career records for receptions and receiving yards as the Bison football team posted a 21-20 comeback victory at Holy Cross at Fitton Field. Bucknell (2-3, 1-0 PL) overcame a 17-0 first-half deficit and outgained Holy Cross (2-4, 1-1 PL) 363162 as it snapped a three-game losing streak. The Crusaders, who entered the game averaging more than 31 points and 440 yards, did not score in the second half and managed just 28 yards of offense after halftime. DeFloria recorded his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, while Matt Muh was 18-for-25 for 202 yards in his third career start. Bret Berg led the Bison defense with 10 tackles, while Ben Richard (2), Abdullah Anderson (1) and Doug Whitlock (1) posted sacks. Holy Cross, which was playing without All-Patriot League quarterback Peter Pujals, used two quarterbacks in his place. Starter Geoff Wade was 2-for-7 for 37 yards, while reserve Blaise Bell was 11-for-23 for 81 yards and a touchdown. Bell also ran six times for 16 yards. Bucknell trailed 20-7 at halftime and dominated the second half. The Bison outgained Holy Cross 28128 after intermission and possessed the ball for nearly 21 minutes. DeFloria had 129 of his rushing yards in the second half. He is now up to a team-high 585 rushing yards on the season. The key sequence in the game came in the second half when the Bison scored on two of three possessions late in the third quarter and early in the fourth and forced two Holy Cross three-and-outs in between. The first of those touchdowns was a Freshnock three-yard run that made it 20-14 late in the third quarter. Setting up the touchdown was a third-down, 44-yard scamper by DeFloria followed by a 24-yard completion to Andrew Owers. Owers acrobatically stayed in bounds and made a dive for the end zone but came up just a couple yards short. After another three-and-out for Holy Cross, Bucknell covered 71 yards on four plays, culminating in a Freshnock nine-yard touchdown run to give the Bison the lead with 6:37 remaining. DeFloria started the drive off with a 43-yard run, and Justin Bethea made a diving 16-yard catch. Freshnock’s second career touchdown gave the Bison the lead for good as Holy Cross kicker Zane Wasp missed a potential go-ahead 42-yard field goal on the Crusaders’ next possession, and the Bucknell defense held Holy Cross without a completion on its final offensive possession in the closing minute of the game. Holy Cross did not total much offense in the game, but special teams was key as Jake Wieczorek had six punt returns for 116 yards and four kickoff returns for 68 yards. He also had a pair of touchdown receptions and a team-high 61 yards receiving. He finished with 245 all-purpose yards. The Crusaders built their 17-0 lead in the first half. Their first score came on a 24-yard touchdown pass from WR Brendan Flaherty to Wieczorek in the first quarter. Holy Cross added another touchdown early in the second quarter when Bell found Wieczorek on a four-yard touchdown pass, while Wasp connected on a 23-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. Bucknell got on the board late in the second quarter when DeFloria recorded his sixth rushing touchdown of the season. The drive started with an 18-yard reception by DeFloria and also featured a defensive pass interference and unsportsmanlike penalties on Holy Cross. Bucknell has now won its Patriot League opener in two of the last three seasons.

@Bucknell_FB

The Bucknell football team kicked off its 2017 campaign with a commanding 45-6 victory over Marist on a rainy night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in front of 3,024 fans. The Bison broke open the game early, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter, including three in the final two minutes of the frame. Their performance on the field set the stage for a rousing post-game fireworks show. With 8:58 on the clock in the first quarter, Colin Jonov opened the scoring, picking off a Mike White pass and racing 64 yards down the Marist sideline for the score. After a bad snap on the extra point attempt, Jack Horan corralled the ball and found Andrew Podbielski in the right corner of the end zone to give Bucknell an 8-0 lead. The Bison scored three touchdowns in the final two minutes of the opening stanza to build a 28-0 advantage. First, after a 4:11 drive during which Bucknell went 3-for-3 in third-down conversions, Matt Muh connected with Kyle Kinner for an 11-yard score. On Marist’s next possession, Nick Zarkoski sacked White deep in the Marist end. The ball came free, and Blake Fletcher pounced on it in the end zone to extend the Bison’s lead to 21-0. Steven Walier put an exclamation mark on the quarter by hauling in a 45-yard touchdown pass with no time left on the clock. Bucknell carried the momentum from its explosive opening stanza into the second quarter. After the Bison defense forced the Red Foxes to go three and out on their first drive, a penalty on the punt gave the offense the ball on the Marist 28. Bucknell took advantage, and Chad Freshnock capped the abbreviated drive with a three-yard touchdown rush. The Red Foxes thwarted the Bison’s shutout bid 29 seconds before halftime after one of the longest drives of the game. Marcelleus Calhoun finished off the drive, which accounted for 97 of Marist’s 119 first-half yards, with a four-yard score. As the rain picked up, both team’s defenses took center stage. The teams combined for just 156 yards of total offense in the second half, 121 of which belonged to Bucknell. The third quarter’s lone score, a 31-yard John Burdick field goal, came with just 51 seconds Note: This logo left on the clock. Freshnock completed the game’s scoring at the 3:29 mark of the finale frame with his second touchdown rush of the game. Leading up to that play, Muh found a wide-open Podbielski for a 31-yard gain on a 3rd and 7 to set the Bison up on the Marist 15. Muh completed 16 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with seven different receivers. Podbielski led the Bison with a career-best 60 receiving yards while Joey DeFloria had the most catches with four. The Bison defense limited Marist to just 154 yards of total offense, including 24 on the ground. Mark Pyles led the way with eight tackles (five solo) while Ben Richard was close behind with seven (six solo). Eight different Bison had a tackle for a loss, with Abdullah Anderson, Fletcher and Pyles each recording two. Four Bison—Fletcher, Simeon Page, Richard and Zarkoski—had a sack. Alex Pechin helped tilt the field in Bucknell’s favor, averaging 47.0 yards per punt. He dropped three inside the 20 and had two touchbacks.
