Bison Good Sports

In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

PATRIOT LEAGUE Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: *101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those earning perfect scores. *The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally. *92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score. *Eleven student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Ellen Bradford (Swimming and Diving), American’s Jen Dumiak (Women’s Basketball) and Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football). *Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. *Buffone and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively. *Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. *There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0. *Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Women’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soccer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner. *Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award finalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning first-team recognition. *Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey). *Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 24 sports sponsored by four years. *The Mids also won the the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won men’s title while Boston Uni- the Cup 18 times in its 25-year existence, versity repeated as women’s including 14 of the last 18 years. Training Bison Student-Athletes to Become Effective Leaders in Academics, in Athletics, and in Life

Competitive sports at Bucknell dates back to 1870, and more than a century later Bucknell has established itself as a national leader in providing successful academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes. Today, the Department of Athletics & Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence among all intercollegiate programs by maintaining academic priorities and supporting educational and personal development, all while providing the rigorous and competitive Division I athletics opportunity sought by Bucknell student-athletes. As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. This is the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. ABOUT THE PROGRAM • In the summer of 2011 the Bucknell Department of Athletics & Recreation implemented a formal leadership development program. • Initial workshops were facilitated by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center. • As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, the program is designed to help studentathletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. • Initially, a group of 60 student-athletes were identified as members. These workshops for both student-athletes and their coaches have set the stage for ongoing programming that will encompass the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. GOALS FOR THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Help young best athletes become best leaders • Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders • Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders • Practice leading self, their class, and below • Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders • Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff • Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support • Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014. All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 319 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 semester.

In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

SEASON PREVIEW A season like the one Bucknell’s field hockey team had last year can have a lasting impact on a program. As the Bison prepare to start the 2015 campaign, head coach Jeremy Cook is already seeing positive changes that come from winning a Patriot League regular season title with an unbeaten 6-0 record. “The young players are coming into the program with the expectation of winning, which is very different than it used to be,” said Cook, who was voted the 2014 Patriot League Coach of the Year. “That really helps. We know we don’t necessarily have to change anything, we just need to get better at what we’re doing.” With the largest recruiting class - nine players - in his eight years at Bucknell, Cook will need some of those freshmen to step up in a hurry. The Bison lost five seniors from last year’s team. All five were starters, and four were voted to the All-Patriot League Team. The group included players from both ends of the field and accounted for 49 percent (20 of 41) of the team’s goals and 62 percent (18 of 29) of the team’s assists. “It’s always a little interesting at the beginning of the year figuring out where the goals are going to come from,” Cook said. “Our corner group was very productive from last season, but we’ve had to replace all three of those positions. That’s one group we didn’t really sub much. They were out there together for the past few years and now they’ve graduated. That’s going to be difficult to replace starting from scratch.” As for the rest of the field, Cook isn’t as concerned. While the team rarely switched up its three corner spots, he says the Bison subbed players during gameplay signifcantly more often than most teams in the country. He hopes that will pay dividends as players step into a larger role this season, as well as years to come. “You make decisions that are for the short-term while also keeping the long term in mind,” Cook said. “That’s something I’ve learned over time. If you want to have a program with a longer period of success, you have to make those kind of decisions. In the past we have done a good job of getting more players on the field than other teams. We typically play 17 or 18 players and we will continue to do that. The benefit from that is you end up with players filling in next year that already saw time this year, even if it wasn’t as impactful at the time. They at least know what they have to do to be successful on the field instead of being new to everything.” Offensively, the Bison return two seniors that are expected to anchor the team up front. Kiersten Sydnor was second on the team with seven goals last season, while also adding two assists. Abby Watson added three goals and assisted on five. Multiple players are still battling for the third spot. The four midfield spots, especially on the inside, could provide the most stability for the Bison. Senior Kayla Sullivan and junior Amy Mucelli, both of whom were named captains prior to the season, started every game last year and are expected to fill the two inside positions. On the outside, juniors Estelle Palandjian and Kelsy Kauffman are the frontunners to start. Neither started last season, but Palandjian played in all 19 games, while Kauffman appeared in 17. In the back, Anna Wills started all 19 games last season and will make the move from the left side into the middle. The outside backs are up for grabs, but senior Emily Hitchings is battling her way back from an injury that caused her to miss all but four games last season, and freshman Lexi Quick has impressed the coaching staff during preseason practice. Prior to her injury, Hitchings had played in all 41 games of her career, including 22 as a starter.

“The backfield is where we will see the biggest change, because we lost two all-league players,” Cook said. Watson was named the lead captain for the Bison, joining Sullivan and Mucelli as team leaders this season. “Abby amd Kayla are in their fourth year here so they really understand what they’re doing and offer a lot on and off the field.” Cook said. “Amy has come on really strong. She was a starter this past season and has really emerged since last spring as one of our more physical players on the field. We expect big things from them.” In addition to competing in a conference that has greatly improved over recent years, the Bison will be tested with tough competition throughout the season. Four teams on the schedule, including No. 20 Boston University, are ranked in the top 20 of the first NFHCA Coaches Poll. The others are Albany and Penn State, both tied for seventh, and No. 15 Princeton. They have an addition three teams - Temple, Delaware, and Rutgers - that finished in the top 30 of the RPI last season. Bucknell was picked third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, coming in behind defending champion Boston University and American. The Bison swept both teams during the regular season last year, but were edged by the Terriers in the Patriot League Championship held at Graham Field. “I’d say from top to bottom it’s the best since I’ve been here,” Cook said of the Patriot League. “Everybody seems to be getting better. American and Boston have been good for 15-20 years, so looking at that we still feel like a little bit of an underdog with those two teams in the league. But, with Lafayette winning a few championships recently and us getting competitive, it has really changed the league.” Boston University returns the reigning Patriot League player of the Year in Sofi Laurito and three other All-Patriot League selections, while American has the reigning Rookie of the Year in Angela Virtu. Bucknell’s four All-Patriot Leaguers have graduated, of course, but that hasn’t had an effect on the team’s attitude during preseason practice. “I’m really happy with the group we have,” Cook said. “The positive culture and environment this group has created is awesome. It’s a joy to come to work every day with this group, win or lose. I think we are doing things the right way. The vast majority of our team has invested themselves fully into what we’re doing. I don’t think anybody is going to outwork us this year.”

Jeremy Cook, a former member of the United States men’s national field hockey team, is set to begin his eighth season as the head coach of Bucknell. Cook is coming off his most successful season to date, which culminated with him being named the 2014 Patriot League Coach of the Year. He led the Bison to a perfect 6-0 record in the conference and the program’s first ever outright regular season title. The unbeaten regular season gave the Bison hosting rights for the Patriot League Tournament, where they advanced to the championship game. Two Bucknell players were named to the NFHCA All-Region Team, the sixth and seventh to do so during Cook’s time with the Bison. Four players were voted to the All-Patriot League Team, giving Cook 31 all-conference honorees for his career. With a 68-65 overall record, Cook enters the 2015 season with the second most wins in program history. His .511 winning percentage is the second best of coaches who spent at least three seasons at Bucknell. Academically, the Bison have been impressive with Cook at the helm, winning three Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards and 16 Academic All-Patriot League honors. Among his extensive international field hockey experience, Cook has served as a technical assistant with the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams. He assisted the men’s team at the Olympic qualifying tournament, and the 2008 Olympics-bound women’s squad at the Pan-American Games, the Champions Challenge, the Chile 4-Nation Tournament and the team’s Holland tour. He has also served as an assistant coach and administrative director at the Elite Performance Training Center in either the Pennsylvania/New Jersey or the Midwest Region each summer since 2005, and he has more than six years of experience coaching the U.S. Futures program in the Washington, D.C., area and at developmental camps across the country. During the summer of 2010, Cook served as the head coach of the Pennsylvania Junior Team at the USA Field Hockey High Performance Championships and led the squad to the title. Hired as an assistant coach at Indiana University in February 2007, Cook has also had assistant coaching stints at Penn (200506), Drexel (2000-01), American (1999) and Cornell (1997-98). Cook, who graduated summa cum laude from Drexel in 2002, enjoyed a stellar playing career. From 1997-2000 he was a member of Team USA. He competed in the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg and was a member of three gold medal-winning teams at the U.S. Olympic Festival. He also played on three Indoor Pan American Cup teams and on the 2003 Indoor World Cup team that competed in Leipzig, Germany. From 1995-97, Cook played on the first team with Hockey Club Rotterdam in The Netherlands. Cook lives in Lewisburg with his wife, Sandra and son, Ryan, born in 2012.

Hannah Allison is set to begin her first season as an assistant coach at Bucknell. She joined the Bison staff after spending two seasons at Ohio Wesleyan, including the most recent as the interim head coach. “I am incredibly excited that Hannah will be joining our program,” Cook said. “As a Mifflinburg native and Penn State graduate, she knows the area and will be very helpful in our recruiting efforts and community engagement activities. She also is coming in with head coaching experience, and based on that experience, has her own vision that will be able to help shape the future of our program. She’s a really hard worker and comes highly recommended. I think she’ll be a fantastic addition to our field hockey family and a positive role model for our student-athletes.” In her one season as the interim head coach at Ohio Wesleyan, Allison led the Battling Bishops to a 10-9 record, including a 7-3 mark over the final 10 games. The team had one All-Region selection and three All-North Coast Athletic Conference honorees. The 10 wins were four more than the previous season and the 6-8 conference record was a two-win improvement. In her one season as an assistant coach, the Battling Bishops went 6-11 overall and had three All-NCAC selections. A 2013 graduate of Penn State with a degree in kinesiology, Allison was a four-year letterwinner for the Nittany Lions and a team captain her senior season. She was a part of two Big Ten championship teams and was a recipient of the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award given to student-athletes with a minimum 3.7 GPA.

Hannah RICHARD

Assistant Coach

New Hampshire ’14 | 8th season Hannah Richard is set to begin her second season as an assistant coach at Bucknell. In her first season, she helped guide the Bison to a perfect 6-0 record in the conference and the program’s first ever outright Patriot League regular season title. A former University of New Hampshire standout, Richard was a two-time Second Team All-America East selection. She played in more than 80 games in her four-year career with the nationally ranked Wildcats. She totaled 29 goals and five assists while garnering nearly 50 starting assignments. Richard netted one goal in a 3-0 New Hampshire victory over Bucknell in October 2013. In addition to her high level of play, Richard has extensive camp coaching experience, having worked at a host of camps all over the northeast over the last six years. She has also served as a Futures Coach since January 2013, and began working with the Seacoast United Field Hockey Club in Hampton, New Hampshire, following the end of her own collegiate playing career. A Hopkinton, New Hampshire native, Richard graduated from New Hampshire in 2014 with a degree in kinesiology: sports studies and a minor in business administration.

HISTORY Academic Honors As it has become accustomed to, the Bucknell field hockey team garnered a number of academic honors in 2014. The Bison were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) for posting a team grade-point average of better than 3.0 and 12 team members earned positions on the NFHCA National Academic Squad. Additionally, many of those same 12 were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for GPAs above 3.20 during the 2014 fall semester and four were Academic All-Patriot League honorees.

HALL OF FAME BUCKNELL ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME The following former field hockey players have been inducted in Bucknell’s Athletics Hall of Fame: Barbara Castens-Seidell (’79): A co-captain in field hockey and one of the first two women elected to the Hall of Fame. Castens played goalkeeper for the Bison. She entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1985. Karin Wegener Knisely (’79): One of the first two women elected to the Hall of Fame, Wegener was Bucknell’s first three-sport captain. She entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1985. Marjorie A. Deck (’73): A co-captain of the field hockey team, Deck entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989. Jill Henry-Feeney (’81): A three-sport captain and twice named to the Academic All-America College Division Team in basketball, Henry entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1993. Kathy Kline Grove (’80): A four-year starter in field hockey, Kline was a nominee for the Honda Broderick Award. She ranks second in career goals for Bucknell with 48 and entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1994.

Dianne Czarnecki (’87): A three-time All EastCoast Conference field hockey player and 1986 Regional All-American, Czarnecki entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999. Pam Heller Shassian (’78): A three-sport standout in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse, Heller was a pioneer for the women’s lacrosse program, serving as co-captain her senior year. She was second team All-Mideast in field hockey and entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 2000. Margaret Philleo Ricci (’79): A standout in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, Philleo was inducted with the Class of 2002. She played on the Mideast Regional hockey team and in the U.S. National tournament. She was a three-time Susquehanna All-Star. Tricia Way (’94): Tricia became the first woman athlete in Bucknell history to earn all-conference honors five times. She was a three-time All-Patriot League selection in women’s lacrosse and a twotime honoree in field hockey. Way was the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete once for field hockey and twice for lacrosse and entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2006.

Susanne Gray Behringer (’84): A captain of both the field hockey and lacrosse teams, Gray entered Hall of Fame with the Class of 1996.

Dorothy “Bugs” Harvey Lloyd (’53): Dorothy, better known as “Bugs,” was a four-year starter for the field hockey club, leading it to great success in Bucknell Intercollegiate Play Day tournaments. She was a member of the Women’s Athletic Association board and served as the organization’s president during her senior year. She was named to the Mid-East Conference all-star team and was a finalist for the national team. Harvey entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2007. Almira Baldwin Arnold (’94): Baldwin earned all-conference honors four straight seasons, only the second Bison female athlete to accomplish the feat. She was one of two Bison named to the Patriot League All-Decade Team for field hockey and was a Second Team Mid-East Regional AllAmerican in 1992 and 1993. She graduated with the program record for assists and entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2008. Jen Zimmerman (’00): A two-year captain, Zimmerman was a two-time Regional All-America and All-Patriot League selection, and as a junior she was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. A member of the Patriot League AllDecade Team for field hockey, she was also the Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1999. She entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2013.
