Bucknell Bison Athletics
A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its seventh year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 23 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 125 Academic All-Americans in 43 years and 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 23 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

What it means to
be a bison
“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910
The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BISON RETURN PLENTY OF FIREPOWER IN NEW-LOOK PATRIOT LEAGUE IN 2014
2013 tHIRD TEAM ALL-AMERICAN david dickson Legendary basketball coach Al McGuire once said, “the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores.” The Bucknell men’s lacrosse team counted on six first-year players in prominent roles on a very good team last season, and now head coach Frank Fedorjaka has watched all of them improve their games dramatically as they enter their sophomore campaigns. Combine that with a large group of talented veteran, and it is apparent that hopes are high for the No. 14/15 Bison entering the 2014 season. Bucknell finished 12-4 in 2013, falling to Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament final. The Bison were ranked as high as sixth in the nation last season, and they were the last team left on the outside looking in when the NCAA Tournament selection committee allotted its at-large bids. Motivated by a sense of unfinished business, Bucknell will have plenty of veteran leadership coming from the likes of senior captains Jackson Place, Todd Heritage, Sam McDonough and Peter Burke, each of whom will return to prominent starting roles. The Bison also return a Third Team All-American in junior David Dickson, who moves from midfield to attack in 2014, and another outstanding junior in defenseman Ben Kellar. And as comforting as that stable of dependable, experienced stars is for Fedorjaka, his excitement is doubled when he thinks about the progress his sophomore class has made since last year. “I love the fact that all of those freshmen are now sophomores,” said Fedorjaka. “The biggest period of improvement comes between the first and second years, and that has definitely been the case with this group. And it all stems from our leadership. One of the most important keys to success at Bucknell is how your seniors lead,
8
and our seniors have done a great job keeping our team unified. The camaraderie is great.” The Bison do have some important parts to replace, as former All-Patriot Leaguers have graduated at attack (Chase Bailey), close defense (Mike Huffner), goalie (Kyle Feeney) and faceoff specialist (Ryan Gutowski). The move of Dickson and his uncanny feeding ability to attack will help offset the loss of Bailey’s 36 goals. Junior Sam Grinberg is set to take over in goal for the four-year starter Feeney. Burke and junior Gavin Sullivan take the majority of the faceoffs, and look for a pair of freshmen to figure prominently on defense. At ATTACK, the Bison will start three of the Patriot League’s top offensive players in Dickson, Heritage and reigning PL Rookie of the Year Sean Doyle. Dickson smashed Bucknell and Patriot League records with 48 assists last year, the fourth-highest total in Division I lacrosse. After only two collegiate seasons, he already ranks fifth on Bucknell’s career assist chart, and coming off an All-America season at midfield, Dickson moves up to attack to give Fedorjaka two stellar feeders there along with Doyle. Doyle did a little bit of everything in his first season in 2013. Even with missing two games due to injury, Doyle logged 42 points on 27 goals and 15 assists, and he ranked in the top 10 in the Patriot League in both points and assists. “Having Dickson and Doyle together gives us a great two-man game,” said Fedorjaka. “It’s really tough to defend them both. They are ultimate set-up guys, and they work together to help the other five guys. David and Sean have both improved as shooters as well, which makes their games even more diverse.” Hoping to be the beneficiary of all of that passing prowess is Heritage, who has long been an elite finisher on the crease. Heritage enters
his senior year with 96 goals, seventh-most in program history, and he might even have his sights set on Justin Zackey’s 20-year-old Bucknell goal-scoring record (138). Heritage is a natural lefthander with terrific hands, and he can turn errant passes into goals from tight spaces. Junior Alex Ryan and sophomore Shane Fee is vying for minutes as the fourth attackman, as is a very promising freshman in Cincinnati native Quinn Collison. At offensive MIDFIELD, which was ranked the fifth-best unit in the country by Inside Lacrosse, the senior Burke will likely run with a pair of talented sophomores on the first line. Burke has used strength and quickness to produce 43 goals and 28 assists in 45 career games. In addition to his duties as a middie, Burke will also be taking faceoffs, something he did extensively in high school. Sophomores Thomas Flibotte and Brock Ghelfi play with different styles, but both have loads of potential. Flibotte was mainly a secondline middie as a freshman in 2013, and he still earned First Team All-Patriot League honors. Using a powerful blend of strength, speed and a rocket of an outside shot, Flibotte scored 29 goals and was one of only two rookies to make the All-PL squad. Ghelfi is one of the smallest players on the team at 5’6”, but he is also one of the fastest. Featuring an outstanding shot on the run, Ghelfi started every game last year and pocketed 16 goals. Senior Tom Black has one of the best outside shots on the team and figures to see plenty of time both 6-on-6 and with the EMO unit. Junior Ryan Joseph played in 15 games last season and scored three goals. Fedorjaka loves his toughness and thinks Joseph is ready for a breakout season. Same goes for sophomore Kyle Shanahan, who saw action in all 16 games as a freshman and did everything but score a goal. At 6’3” and 214 pounds, Shanahan has the size and strength to be an elite midfielder, and he has improved significantly from his rookie year. Sophomore Adam Lynne and freshmen Tommy O’Connor and Nick Steinfeld are also pushing hard for playing time. “We do have a lot of our firepower back,” said Fedorjaka. “I would expect us to score goals at a higher rate and more efficiently this year.” Bucknell has plenty of experience back at SHORT-STICK DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD, even with the graduation of Kyle O’Keefe. A former walk-on, McDonough has emerged as one of the best in the league at this position. McDonough was elected team captain this year, and Fedorjaka says he has become one of the vocal leaders of the defense. Junior Mike Ondrusek, a native of nearby Lancaster, Pa., brings even more grit and toughness to the position, and his ground ball skills make him very effective as a faceoff wing. Sophomore Zach Henkhaus emerged late last season, and he has a similar game to Ondrusek: quick, strong and terrific on ground balls.

2013 PATRIOT LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR SEAN DOYLE
Senior Tyler McLamb has had some injury problems throughout his career, but he is extremely fast and can be effective in the clearing game. Sophomore Brett Pearce moved from offensive to defensive midfield this year, and Fedorjaka feels that once he gets caught up in learning Bucknell’s sophisticated system, he has plenty of potential. Freshman Ben Foley is also a transplanted SSDM and is very athletic. Sophomore Alex Spring headlines a talented group of LONG-STICK DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS. Fedorjaka calls Spring one of the best ground ball guys he has ever coached. He takes every wing on faceoffs, is a strong 1-on-1 defender and brings plenty of speed in transition. The Bison had high hopes for sophomore Eric Monfort a year ago, but he suffered a season-ending injury after only two games. He is back at full strength in 2014 and will likely factor into the long-pole rotation. Also keep an eye on freshman Evan Bernstein, who can play both defensive midfield and close defense. Jobs are open at both positions, and Bernstein has looked like a strong contender for one of them. Sophomore walk-on Mike Adelman made the team this fall after fully recovering from a high school injury. He is a hard worker and will be battling for playing time. Fedorjaka has always relied on a stable of big, physical CLOSE DEFENSEMEN as the foundation of his high-pressure, switching defensive system, and this year is no different. Place and Kellar are two of the best returning defensemen in the Patriot League, and Place was named a Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse’s Face-Off Yearbook. Place was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection a year ago, and in January he was selected in the fourth round of the MLL Draft by the Ohio Machine. Place ranked 17th nationally in caused turnovers a year ago, and he will once again be matched up against the opponent’s No. 1 attackman.

After missing all of his freshman year with a knee injury, Kellar started all 16 games last season and was a key part of Bucknell’s nationally ranked defense. Kellar has a keen understanding of the team’s system, and now two years removed from the injury, his speed and quickness is better than ever. Freshman Brad Dotson is poised to see plenty of action on defense. The 6’5”, 219-pounder from Virginia is another physical presence, and he has good footwork and has picked up the system very quickly. The Bison have plenty of depth at close defense. Junior Cam Buglione is the most experienced, and the hard worker is battling for that fourth defenseman spot. Sophomore Bret Brachman-Goldstein has worked hard on his physical conditioning, and with added consistency could be poised for additional field time. From the freshman class, Mike Schiappa, Jack Slater and Nader Sharif-Emami all join the defensive unit. Schiappa has terrific speed, and Slater is a strong ground-ball guy who could soon help out on the faceoff wings. After the graduation of four-year starting GOALIE Kyle Feeney, the job now belongs to junior Sam Grinberg. The New York City native was tested late last season with some relief appearances in big spots. Grinberg was the winning goalkeeper in the regular-season finale at Colgate. In that game he came in with Bucknell trailing 7-5 in the third quarter and made six saves while the Bison finished the game on an 8-1 run. He earned Patriot League Goalie of the Week honors for his efforts, and then he played 31 minutes in the league championship game at Lehigh. Grinberg is a strong ball-stopper who brings a sense of calmness to the crease. One of Feeney’s biggest strengths was his ability to direct the defense vocally, and now Grinberg is working hard to replicate that key function. Backing up Grinberg will be junior Frank
Morelli and freshmen Jake Kennedy and Robbie Coe. Gutowski earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors as a FACEOFF SPECIALIST last season, when he took nearly 70 percent of Bucknell’s draws, won just over 50 percent of them and led the team with 75 ground balls. This will be a key area for Fedorjaka to shore up. Sullivan took 75 faceoffs last season, the second-most on the team behind Gutowski, and he won 43 percent. Burke was a faceoff man in high school, and his hockey background lends well to the position, but he has not seen action at the X yet at the collegiate level. If needed, Monfort can take draws with his long pole, and newcomers Matt Sharkey and Colin Farawell also add depth at the position. Sharkey is a transfer from Cornell, while Farawell made the squad as a walk-on after competing with the Bison wrestling team a year ago. “If we can be solid in goal and on faceoffs, we can be very tough 6-on-6,” said Fedorjaka. “Our guys have high expectations, and we are not afraid to say that our goal is to win a national championship. We think we have enough to do that. We have good chemistry and balance, but we also know how tough it is to navigate through the Patriot League. The league is better than ever, especially with the addition of Loyola.” The Bison also have three very difficult non-conference road games in North Carolina, Bryant and Fairfield, and they will play Delaware, Brown and Mount St. Mary’s at home. In Patriot League play, Bucknell gets Navy, Lehigh, Boston University and Lafayette at home, and it will face Colgate, Holy Cross, Army and Loyola on the road. The Loyola contest will end the regular season on Apr. 17 and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

He has become a very solid midfielder for us and will still be on the first line, but we are deeper at that position now, and with Ryan Gutowski gone we are going to lean on Peter to be heavily involved in the faceoff game. He played hockey growing up and is very quick with his hands.”

2014 Bucknell men’s lacrosse FRANK FEDORJAKA HEAD COACH 9th SEASON
119-74 overall, 80-43 at BU After two stints as an assistant coach at Bucknell spanning nearly a decade, Frank Fedorjaka took over as head coach in 2006 when he succeeded longtime mentor Sid Jamieson. In 2011 Fedorjaka guided the team to its first Patriot League Tournament title and second NCAA Tournament appearance, and he has cemented Bucknell’s status as an annual Patriot League title contender and national top 20 program. Fedorjaka became only the second head coach in Bucknell lacrosse history, following in the footsteps of Jamieson, the Bucknell Hall of Famer who founded the varsity lacrosse program in 1968. In his eight seasons since taking over for Jamieson, Fedorjaka has fashioned a stellar 80-43 (.650) record, including a 33-15 (.688) Patriot League ledger. That makes him won of the top-10 most successful active coaches in Division I lacrosse. The Bison have won 10 or more games in four of his eight seasons, including a program record 14 in 2011 and 12 last season. Including a five-year stint as head coach at Franklin & Marshall from 1994-98, Fedorjaka has a 119-74 (.617) lifetime record. In 2013, Fedorjaka’s squad achieved a No. 6 national ranking, the highest in program history, buoyed by a 9-8 upset of No. 2 Cornell in Ithaca in March. The team finished 12-4 and advanced to the Patriot League championship game before just missing an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament despite a final RPI ranking of 12. In his first season at the helm, Fedorjaka led the Bison to a historic victory over No. 1 Maryland -- the program’s first-ever victory over a top-ranked team -- and another top-20 road win at Penn State later in the season. The victories really began to start pouring in during year No. 2, as the Bison went 11-4, including three top-20 wins, and came within one of the school record for wins in a season. Another 10-win season followed in 2008, and the Bison advanced all the way to the Patriot League championship game for the first time. In 2009 Fedorjaka was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Bison to a perfect 6-0 conference record and the Patriot League regular-season title. His team made it to the championship game for the second year in a row, this time dropping a one-goal heartbreaker to Navy. In 2010, the Bison took second-ranked and eventual national champion Duke to overtime, and they again qualified for the postseason. Bucknell finished 8-6, with the six losses coming by a combined seven goals. And then in 2011 the Bison finished 14-3, setting a new school record for wins in a season. They went 6-0 in the Patriot League for the second
20
time in three years and routed Lehigh and Colgate in the PL Tournament before entering the NCAA Tournament with a No. 7 national ranking, the highest in program historyat the time. Bucknell nearly upset eventual national champion Virginia in the first round, leading for most of the game before falling 13-12 in overtime. Fedorjaka was rewarded with his second Patriot League Coach of the Year award. Known throughout his career as one of the college game’s best defensive minds, Fedorjaka’s teams annually rank among the national leaders in scoring defense, man-down defense and riding efficiency. Bucknell ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense in 2007, and the Bison have ranked 11th or better five times in the last eight years. In his first eight years as head coach Fedorjaka has mentored 43 AllPatriot League players and eight All-Americans, including three-time AllAmerican Austin Winter. He has also coached four Patriot League Rookie of the Year selections, one Defensive Player of the Year and one Goalie of the Year. That goalie, Nick Sciubba, led the nation in save percentage and goals-against average in 2007. Four of Fedorjaka’s student-athletes have gone on to play professional lacrosse after graduation. Fedorjaka rejoined the Bucknell lacrosse family after serving as head coach at Franklin & Marshall for five years. Fedorjaka served as an assistant coach at Bucknell for the 1992 and 1993 seasons before going to F&M. In Fedorjaka’s five seasons at F&M, the Diplomats compiled a 39-31 record. His 39 wins placed him in second on the school’s all-time lacrosse wins list. In 1995 Fedorjaka was named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Division III Coach of the Year, after leading the Diplomats to a 12-3 record and an NCAA playoff berth. In addition to his responsibilities as men’s lacrosse coach, Fedorjaka also served as an assistant coach in football and women’s soccer during his tenure at F&M. Also while at F&M Fedorjaka served as the Chair to the Southern ECAC Lacrosse Committee in 1997 and 1998. He served on the USILA National Ranking Committee and NCAA Advisory Committee for Division III lacrosse. A 1989 graduate of Hobart College, Fedorjaka was a starting long-stick midfielder on three NCAA Division III national championship teams. He was also a three-year starter at wide receiver for the Statesman football team, earning All-America honors in 1988. The Rochester, N.Y., native was named Hobart’s Athlete of the Year in 1989. During his career at Hobart, he held all reception records and remained the school’s all-time leading receiver until 2004. Fedorjaka began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for two years at Springfield College (Mass.).

My top priority as a head coach is to be sure that our program has a positive image on campus, in the community and in the lacrosse world. It is important to me that our student-athletes give back to the University, the community, and to the sport they love, and that these three entities are better with Bucknell Lacrosse than without. That said, I am proud to announce this year’s Community Service Plan. Our goal is to contribute 24 hours of community service The U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne per team member. ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL
The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.
Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell.edu/ThePlanforBucknell
