What it means to
be a bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910
The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a studentathlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime. Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence
Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.
•
With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.
•
Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affiliation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s indoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.
•
According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions reporting federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identical to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.
•
Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.
•
Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.
•
A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.
•
•
24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2009.
•
In addition to the 117 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 276 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.
A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics
A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 15 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 19 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 117 Academic All-Americans in 39 years and 114 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 19 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the West Fields softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

2009 Bucknell Soccer
Brendan Nash
Head Coach Trenton State ’94 • 11th Season NASH’s Coaching Record • Overall: 89-76-28 (.534) • At Bucknell: 89-76-28 (.534) • 2000 & 2003 Patriot League Coach of the Year • No. 2 on Bucknell career wins list (89) • Coached Bison to 2006 PL title • Played in 1991 D-III national title game
The 2009 season will be Brendan Nash’s 11th as head coach of the Bison men’s soccer team and his 14th overall at Bucknell. Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest winning percentage (.534) in program history and is second on the wins list with 89, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in Patriot League play in five of the last six seasons under his direction, and Nash helped the team to double-figure victories in at least two consecutive seasons for just the third time in program history in 2002-03. While the Bison’s success under Nash has been impressive, it reached a new high in 2006 when Bucknell won the Patriot League Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason. Last season, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in September. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. The 2006 campaign, which was highlighted by a program record-tying eight-game unbeaten streak, was the third time in four years Bucknell qualified for the Patriot League Tournament. The year prior to that string of success, Nash led the Bison to a school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which is a school record. On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the highest-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 record. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pittsburgh on a penalty kick. In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year, marking only the second time a Bucknell men’s soccer mentor has garnered the award. Nash has helped current senior Conor O’Brien earn a spot on the Hermann Award Watch list in both 2008 and 2009, and each of his last two recruiting classes have been ranked in the top 40 nationally. Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached four Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber, 2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, and Chris Hennings in 2008. Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award 11 of the last 14 years. A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons. While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III na-
6
tional championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsmanship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Longwood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference. Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been instrumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee. Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the College of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997. Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, also coach soccer. Jamie is in his 10th year as the head mentor of the men’s soccer team at Caldwell College, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School in New Jersey. Former Nash Assistants: • John Campbell - Dominican College Head Coach • Doug Hess - Campbell University Head Coach • Michael Jacobson - Cal State L.A. Assistant Coach • Brian Suskiewicz - University of Hawaii at Hilo Assistant Coach

Assistant Coach Appalachian State ’04 • 4th Season
Strength & Conditioning Coordinator East Stroudsburg ’96 • 8th Season
Cam Ormsby, who graduated from Appalachian State in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and is a former soccer player and assistant coach at his alma mater, will enter his fourth season with the Bison in 2008. He was a member of the Mountaineers men’s soccer team from 1999-2002 and served as team captain as a senior. He followed that with a two-year stint as an assistant coach where he had a host of duties, including supervising team academics, planning team travel, scouting, and planning and implementing team training. Ormsby also served as the liaison between the coaching staff and the athletic trainers and strength coaches. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Ormsby has also coached soccer at the high school level. In the spring of 2004 he was the head junior varsity girl’s soccer coach at Watauga High School in Boone, N.C., and also served as the assistant coach of the varsity team. In 2004 and 2005 Ormsby served as the head boy’s and girl’s soccer coach at Alexander Central High School, where he was also a physical education and health teacher. While at Alexander he was recognized as the 2004 North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association (NCSCA) Region 11 Coach of the Year and served as the NCSCA Region 11 girl’s soccer chairman. Ormsby has coached a number of club soccer teams in addition to serving as a staff counselor at numerous summer camps, including Bucknell, Appalachian State, Clemson and Davidson. A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association and the High Country Soccer Association, Ormsby’s soccer career started at Swansboro High School in Swansboro, N.C., where he led the team to back-to-back state championships and served as team captain. Ormsby, who was the president of the Appalachian State Student-Athlete Advisory Board while there, is married to the former Jenny Pearce, who played on the North Carolina State women’s soccer team.
The strength and conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-squarefoot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first full-time strength and conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.
pete ellis
Volunteer Assistant Coach East Stroudsburg ’83 • 3rd Season Former Bucknell assistant coach and longtime Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete Ellis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his third year in that role. After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area High School, where he became a health and physical education teacher, a post he still holds, and boys soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a sparkling 261-125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Ellis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span. A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis relinquished his coaching duties with Lewisburg to spend more time with his family and afford him the opportunity to watch his daughter, Roz, play field hockey at Iowa.

Season Outlook
2009 Bucknell Soccer Much of the discussion surrounding the Bucknell men’s soccer team this past offseason was focused on Brendan Nash’s heralded recruiting class. And with good reason, as this year’s batch of newcomers was ranked 30th nationally by College Soccer News, and two members of that class — Jermaine Jarrett and Josh Plump — were listed among the top 100 freshman prospects in Division I. But while a number of those rookies are expected to play significant roles in 2009, it is the presence of a host of well-established veterans that has Nash so enthusiastic heading into the season. The Bison return 19 lettermen from last year’s 8-8-3 squad that fell one win shy of a Patriot League Tournament berth. Headlining that list are senior cocaptains Conor O’Brien and Patrick Selwood, who not only rank among the Patriot League’s best at their respective positions, but who have also drawn kudos from the coaching staff for their leadership in successfully indoctrinating the large freshman class. Mix in another all-conference-caliber defender in Ross Liberati, a rapidly emerging sophomore midfielder in Luke Joyner, two versatile veterans in Sean King and Tommy McCabe, and two experienced keepers in Tommy Caso and Will Byrne, and the ingredients for strong leadership are in place. “We are so excited about this year,” Nash proclaimed during preseason training in August. “Our returning group had a great spring, and last year’s freshmen have really grown up. We have some very good younger players to go with great leadership, and our team chemistry has been outstanding.” Nash also noted that with all but four positions open for full competition, preseason camp has been as spirited and competitive as any during his 11-year tenure as head coach. Heading into the new year there are still some unknowns personnel-wise, but Nash knows exactly the style this group must play in order to be successful. “I think last year we may have lost sight of what made us so successful in the past,” said Nash. “We have to grind it out, play like underdogs and rally together. We have to get back to our high defensive standards, be tough to score on and not press so much about who is going to score for us. That adds up to a pretty vanilla style, but we want to be that way. With so much parity in the Patriot League, we have to be prepared to play either 90 or 110 minutes in each one of those seven games. One mistake can lead to one goal, which all of the sudden can put you in fifth place.” The most decorated returnee is O’Brien, the crafty center midfielder who has been named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List for the second straight campaign. O’Brien followed up a 19-point 2007 season with 22 points on seven goals and eight assists last year. He led the Patriot League in points and assists and ranked No. 3 in the league in goals en route to Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors. He later earned second-team all-region honors, and this summer he had a very successful year playing with the Premier Development League’s Cary Clarets, leading that team to the national semifinals while producing two goals and three assists in 15 matches. “Conor knows that he is the leader of this team, and he is very comfortable in that role,” said Nash. “He has a target on his back everywhere we go, but he really relishes that challenge. The bigger the game, the better he plays. I know he would like one more shot at a Patriot League championship, and his teammates are really committed to helping him get there.” If O’Brien is seen as the leader of the team, then Selwood is certainly the skipper of the defense. Intense and vocal in the back, Selwood earned AllPatriot League honors for the first time last season. He was also the MVP of the Days Inn Classic and an All-Tournament pick at the Penn State Classic, a pair of tournaments won by the Bison in back-to-back weekends. “Pat was injured in the spring but he is fit and ready to go,” said Nash. “There is no question that he is the leader of our defense, and as intense and com-
8
Conor O’Brien mitted as he is, I would not be surprised if he ends up in consideration for Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.” Selwood should have plenty of help on the back line. His most experienced sidekick is Liberati, a junior who has been a regular for two seasons already. Liberati was the MVP of the Penn State tournament last fall, when Bucknell allowed just one goal in a win over the host Nittany Lions and a tie with No. 10 Ohio State. At 6’3” he is one of the Patriot League’s best in the air — all five career goals are on headers — and is a dangerous player on any set piece or corner kick. Depending on the development of some of the freshmen defenders, Nash said Liberati could move up to center midfield if needed. King, a senior, and McCabe, a junior, have both played multiple positions during their Bucknell careers, and this year the coaching staff would like to find both a stable home. King is a very solid player who has played both back and midfield, but Nash feels he would be even better with one established role. The same goes for McCabe, who has a big left foot and can play either left back or left midfield. McCabe had a two-goal game against NJIT late last season after moving up to midfield. Sophomore Nader Sawtarie can also play both midfield and defense. Sawtarie was having a very productive rookie year until going down with a foot injury midway through the season. Once he is back to 100 percent physically, he will be in a primary role as well. That promising recruiting class features a handful of first-year players capable of lending strong defensive support. Jermaine Jarrett, who came up through the Jamaican National Team system, will likely have the most immediate impact. Fast, tough and strong in the air, Nash feels Jarrett has the potential to become a special player. Big center back Collin Costello and tough-nosed New Jersey native Vinny Cinotti are also battling for time on defense. Behind the defense, Bucknell carries three goalkeepers on the roster, including two with game experience. Caso started 12 games as a rookie last year and made 51 saves while allowing 17 goals. He went 5-4-3 in those 12 starts and posted shutouts against Penn State, Cornell and Army. He came back for year No. 2 brimming with confidence after leading his club team, the powerful Casa Mia Bays of Baltimore, to a national championship over the summer. Byrne started the other seven matches — the first seven of his career — and went 3-4 with 30 saves and 12 goals against. Sophomore Marc Hartmann did not make a game ap-
pearance last year but is also in the mix. “In the preseason we have had an open competition among the three keepers, and each guy brings something different to the table,” said Nash. “Tommy Caso played like a freshman last season because everything was so new to him, but he has had a very productive offseason highlighted by winning a national championship this summer. Tommy and Marc Hartmann both got significant minutes in the spring and both have matured considerably as goalkeepers.” When it comes to scoring goals, the Bison do return their top 2008 scorer in O’Brien, but they must replace another 21 goals and 52 points after graduating Chris Hennings (7-418), Mark Schmiegel (5-2-12), Anthony Ferraro (5-2-12) and Alex Russo (4-2-10). One player Nash is counting on for increased scoring production is sophomore midfielder Luke Joyner, an imposing presence in the middle at 6’5.” Joyner logged two goals and four assists last season and was in on scoring chances seemingly every game. “Luke had the best spring season on the team,” lauded Nash. “He really showed his upside and solidified his spot at center midfield for us. He is someone that the opposition must be aware of at all times.” Also keep an eye on another sophomore midfielder in Ryan Sappington, who is vying for one of the outside positions. Sappington also had a very good spring and summer, and his understanding of the game has risen significantly since last season. Senior Alex Meisel, juniors Eric Ferson and Travis Rand and sophomore Andrew Powell are also looking to make a mark in the midfield. Left midfielder CK Kumah and forwards Brendan Burgdorf and Josh Plump have the potential to be impact offensive players as freshmen. Kumah, the Accra, Ghana native, will bring a new dynamic to the left midfield position vacated by the graduation of the hard-working Schmiegel. An active, athletic talent, Kumah has quickly proven to be a gifted all-around player. Burgdorf, a first-team all-state player from New Jersey, has great speed and a feel for the game, and Nash predicts he will be a handful to defend. Plump, the New Jersey Player of the Year and an ESPN RISE Honorable Mention All-American, could already be one of the fastest players in the Patriot League, according to Nash, and he has star potential once he gets used to the offensive system. Burgdorf and Plump were teammates on the Match Fit Chelsea U18 Academy Team. Freshman Phil Parsons, a native of Bermuda and a member of that country’s national team, is a hard-working center midfielder who will benefit from a year playing behind O’Brien. Fleet-footed Michael Alpogianis will compete for playing time at forward. Two more freshmen, Charlie Pirc and Ryan Foreman, a teammate of Alpogianis at New Trier High outside Chicago, are capable of playing forward, midfield or back, and the coaches are trying to identify where they fit best. Bucknell scored 34 goals in 19 games and extended a school-record scoring streak to 28 games last season, but at times the Bison struggled in their own end and yielded 29 goals of their own. The result was four one-goal losses — two coming in overtime — in Patriot League play. Nash says missing the postseason could serve as extra motivation for the veterans coming back in 2009. “In 2005 we missed the playoffs on the final day of the season, then came back the next year and won the championship,” recalled Nash. “In that case the disappointment carried into the offseason, and we worked so much harder the next year. I can sense the same spirit in this team. We have set the bar, now we need to push ourselves so much harder to go above the bar.”

the plan for bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,400 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell.edu/ThePlanforBucknell

bucknell athletics mission statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic AllAmericans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends,

the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s studentathletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

2009 Bucknell Soccer In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men’s and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.
presidents’ cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 15 times in its 19-year existence, including 11 of the last 12 years. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings. Patriot League 2006 patriot league champions
The 2006 season was an up-and-down affair for the Bucknell men’s soccer team. After opening the campaign 0-1-1, the Bison reeled off a program record-tying eight-match undefeated streak that featured seven victories. It appeared as though the young Bucknell team that featured just one senior — Andrew Loia — on its roster would cruise into the Patriot League Tournament for the third time in four years. However, the Bison lost five matches in a difficult six-game stretch to put them on the fence for a potential appearance in the Patriot League Tournament. A postseason berth came down to the final match of the season, an important home contest with Navy. Bucknell needed to win the game and hope that American would lose to Army. The Bison ended up pulling out a 2-0 victory behind goals from Nathan LaGrave and Mark Schmiegel. Following the win, the team gathered in the locker room to anxiously await the result of the Army-American match, which started one hour later. The Black Knights ended up defeating the Eagles 3-2 to clinch the fourth seed in the Patriot League Tournament for Bucknell. The Bison defense was at its best during the Patriot League Tournament, allowing just one goal against the top two teams in the league. Bucknell played No. 1 Lehigh, which was ranked 14th nationally and hosting the four-team event, to a 1-1 tie. It advanced to the championship match for just the second time in program history by winning 4-1 on penalty kicks. Two days later the Bison claimed their first-ever title by upending Lafayette 4-3 on penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 tie. A diving save by Patriot League Tournament MVP Joey Kuterbach on the final penalty kick sealed the victory. Six days later Schmiegel provided the heroics in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at George Mason. He tallied the lone goal of the contest just over five minutes into overtime for Bucknell’s first NCAA victory in 32 years. The Cinderella run came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when the Bison lost 4-0 to No. 4 Virginia, which advanced to the national semifinals.
