Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2010, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

In addition to the 120 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS and RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 21 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 120 Academic All-Americans in 41 years and 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 21 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new indoor instructional golf center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

After leading the 2009 Bison to perhaps the greatest year in program history, Brendan Nash, guided the team to a Patriot League championship repeat — and a third conference title in five years — last fall. Now Nash returns for his 13th season as head coach and 16th season as a member of the Bucknell men’s soccer program. Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest winning percentage (.556) in program history and is second on the wins list with 116, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in the competitive Patriot League in seven of the last eight seasons under his direction, and in three of the last five years the team has captured Patriot League championships, with NCAA Tournament first-round wins following two of those titles. In 2006, the Bison won their first Patriot League Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason. In 2009, Bucknell set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafayette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. As an encore, the 2010 Bison won the Patriot League crown as the No. 4 seed, knocking off host Colgate and American in the tournament. A 1-0 overtime loss to homestanding Penn ended the team’s run of NCAA first-round success. Bucknell’s success under Nash has not been limited to the championship seasons. In 2008, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in September. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. The Bison repeated the feat with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over No. 15 Penn State last season in State College. In 2002, Nash led the Bison to a then-school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which was a school record until the 2008-09 teams combined for 25. On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the highest-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. He would earn those honors again in 2009. During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 record. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the previous Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pittsburgh on a penalty kick. In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year. Nash helped 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien become Bucknell’s first AllAmerican in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Two of his players, O’Brien and Michael Look-

ingland ‘05, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Bucknell, with O’Brien currently playing for a superleague team in Denmark. Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached five Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber, 2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, Chris Hennings in 2008 and Patrick Selwood in 2009. Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year since 1997. A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons. While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III national championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsmanship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Longwood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference. Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been instrumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee. Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the College of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997. Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, coach soccer in New Jersey. Jamie is the head coach at Boonton High School, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School.

Patrick Long, a former team captain and all-region selection at Lock Haven, is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Bucknell men’s soccer program. Long, who previously had been an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg, helped the Bison win a Patriot League championship in his first season. A native of Lock Haven, Pa., Long graduated from his hometown school with a bachelor of science degree in secondary education and social studies, with a minor in coaching. As a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team from 2003-06, he was a two-time First Team All-PSAC selection and a twotime All-Northeast Region selection, making first team in 2005 and second team in 2006. A two-year team captain, Long won the team’s Player of the Year Award as a junior and Coaches’ Award as a senior, was a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and was a Third Team Academic All-American during his senior campaign. During the 2005 spring semester, he studied at Hope University in Liverpool, England. Long also played on the Lock Haven men’s basketball team in 2006-07. While completing his coursework at Lock Haven, Long served as a student assistant coach with the Eagles in 2007-08. He then moved on to East Stroudsburg as a graduate assistant coach as he completed his master’s degree in sports management with a 4.0 grade-point average in August 2009. Last fall, he remained at ESU as an assistant coach, helping the Warriors to an 11-win season. Long has been very active in the summer camp and club soccer scene as a coach, camp counselor and tournament director. Prior to his arrival at Bucknell, he was an assistant coach with the Central Pennsylvania ODP in 2008, and in 2009 was the player development system director for the Pocono Area Shooting Stars F.C. In the last year he has helped organize the Bison Soccer Camp and the North Union United Summer Camp.

The strength and conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

Assistant Coach East Stroudsburg ’83 • Fourth Season Former Bucknell assistant coach and longtime Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete Ellis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his fifth year in that role. After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area High School, where he became a health and physical education teacher, a post he still holds, and boys soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a sparkling 261125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Ellis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span. A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis relinquished his coaching duties with Lewisburg to spend more time with his family and afford him the opportunity to watch his daughter, Roz, play field hockey at Iowa.

Athletic Trainer California (Pa.) ’05 • 2nd Season Kristin Klinger is in her second season with the Bucknell Athletic Training staff in 2011-12. Klinger came to Bucknell after more than two years as the head athletic trainer at Lock Haven Hospital. There, she was responsible for 32 athletics teams in the Keystone Central School District, including the varsity football team. Klinger earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies in 2005 from Clarion. She also received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from California University of Pennsylvania the same year. Two years later she earned a master’s degree in arts in educational leadership from the University of Nevada. Serving as an athletic trainer at the Collegiate Nationals Beach Volleyball, John Smith Oklahoma State Wrestling Camp and the Reno Volleyball Festival highlight Klinger’s other professional experiences. In addition to her duties with the men’s soccer team, Klinger also covers wrestling and softball at Bucknell.

Brendan Burgdorf Bucknell head men’s soccer coach Brendan Nash enters the 2011 season with a full arsenal at his disposal. Coming off back-to-back Patriot League championships, the Bison boast a little bit of everything heading into the new year: depth, size, speed, technical skill and plenty of experience in big games. Still, Nash’s squad has plenty to work out as it dives headfirst into a very daunting schedule. In 2009 the Bison won a school-record 17 matches and captured the Patriot League title as the No. 1 seed and prohibitive favorite in the tournament. After losing All-America midfielder Conor O’Brien to graduation, Bucknell took a more circuitous route to the championship last season, staging a remarkable late-season rally to qualify for the postseason, and then winning the Patriot League Tournament on the road as the No. 4 seed. Last year’s championship squad featured only three seniors — all of them starters in Ross Liberati, Tommy McCabe and Travis Rand — meaning that most of Bucknell’s roster has been on the field for critical games. In fact, in 2011 there will be 15 players in the Patriot League who have played on the winning side in a championship game, and Bucknell has 13 of them. Garnering most of the offseason headlines for Bucknell has been 6’4” forward Brendan Burgdorf, who won the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year award as a sophomore last season. In August, Burgdorf was one of two Patriot League players named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list, and the league’s coaches and sports information directors tabbed him as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Burgdorf logged a team-best six goals last season, including a 77th-minute game-winner against No. 15 Penn State. While Burgdorf has drawn the clippings, and the keen attention of opposing defenses, Bucknell should have quality at all 11 positions with depth to spare. The Bison have been a goal-scoring machine in recent years, producing at least one goal in 74 of their last 78 contests dating back to 2007. But they can also defend. Bucknell set a school record with 12 shutouts in 2009, and after some early struggles last season won two 1-0 decisions in the Patriot League Tournament. Since falling 1-0 in overtime to Penn in the NCAA Tournament, the Bison went through an entire spring schedule and two fall exhibition matches without conceding a goal. “We have the tools to be an attacking team or a defensive team,” said Nash, who is entering his 13th season as head coach. “It is tough to be both at the same time, so we are going to have to form an identity early in the season. Once that happens, we can go. A big part of how we play is going to depend on how we think we

can beat that day’s opponent. We want to be proactive in our scouting and force our opponent to adjust to us.” Bucknell appears to be two deep at just about every position, and that includes goalkeeper, where seniors Tommy Caso and Marc Hartmann both have considerable game experience. Caso won the starting job as a freshman, and in 2009 earned Second Team AllPatriot League honors while breaking school records for wins (15) and shutouts (10) in a season. He began last season as the starter, but Hartmann began to emerge midway through the year and was in the cage for Bucknell’s postseason run. Hartmann last season finished 7-4-1 with four shutouts. So Bucknell enters 2011 with the rare luxury of having two keepers who have each started in a Patriot League championship game and in an NCAA Tournament game. Sophomore Orman Kimbrough is the understudy to both Caso and Hartmann. “Tommy is the most athletic of our three keepers, and we are looking for him to rebound and find the form he had his sophomore year,” said Nash. “Marc Hartmann is a very good vocal leader from the back. Last year he gained a tremendous amount of confidence playing in big games, and that confidence has carried over to this year. We have two very good keepers, and we feel very good about both of them.” In front of the Caso/Hartmann tandem is a potentially dominant back four. Seniors Andrew Powell and Nader Sawtarie, junior Jermaine Jarrett and sophomore Mayowa Alli are all at least six feet tall, and all have terrific speed and athleticism. Powell may just be the best athlete in the Patriot League — in any sport. In addition to being a two-time All-Patriot League selection in soccer, Powell has won league titles in both the decathlon and heptathlon as a member of the Bison track and field team. Just as important, he has helped both teams to multiple league championships. On the soccer field, he can play center back or center midfield and possesses a powerful shot and terrific leaping ability. Powell has four career goals, and three of them are second-half game-winners, including a memorable strike from nearly 50 yards out in a 2-1 home win over Army last season. Sawtarie has battled injuries throughout his career and has bounced around at a few different positions. But he enters 2011 completely healthy and determined to have a big senior year. Sawtarie has great speed and perhaps the hardest shot on the team. Nash also has high hopes for Jarrett, who came up through the Jamaican national team system. Jarrett was a starter as a freshman but also battled some injuries last season. After a productive summer of training, Jarrett is fit and looking sharp in the preseason. Alli emerged as one of the Patriot League’s top newcomers last season and was rewarded with the league’s Rookie of the Year Award. Not only did he bring stability to the important left back position, but he also showed the ability to attack forward and scored some big goals down the stretch. He scored twice on headers on set pieces in the 86th minute to erase a 3-1 deficit against Colgate, and he scored the overtime game-winner at Lehigh on the final day of the regular season to propel the Bison to a postseason berth. Nash calls Alli “one of the strongest tacklers we’ve ever had in the program,” and he also possesses a powerful throw that adds yet another dimension to the Bucknell attack. Juniors Vinny Cinotti and Collin Costello bring added experience to the defensive ranks. Cinotti played in 17 games last season, although much of that action came in the offensive half. He used the opportunity to show off the grit and toughness that make him a tough 1v1 defender. Costello has yet to see much game action in a Bison uniform, but Nash says that he is right on the cusp at center back. Costello has good size at 6’3” and has really matured as a player over the last twoplus years. Freshmen John Miller and Rafael EnriquezHesles are a pair of promising young backs who have

the luxury of a year to learn as part of a veteran unit. Miller is already among the fastest players on the team and could also see some time at outside midfield once he learns some of the nuances of the college game. Enriquez-Hesles is a natural left back with good quickness and technical ability. Seniors Luke Joyner and Ryan Sappington are the leaders of a quality midfield unit. Joyner has been an impact player from day one, using his 6’4” frame to score big goals both in the air and with his feet. He enters his senior year with eight goals and 13 assists in his career, and he brings all the intangibles to be successful. Sappington is the ultimate “glue” player who has played all over the field during his Bucknell career. He is a smart player who is willing to do all the work. Junior CK Kumah and sophomore Joe Meyer bring tremendous speed to the outside midfield positions. Nash says Kumah is completely healthy for the first time since his freshman season, and when 100 percent he is a creative and dynamic offensive player. Meyer came on strong at the end of last season and is a candidate for a breakout season in 2011. Meyer had a terrific spring for Bucknell and then won a U-19 national championship with the Baltimore Bays over the summer. Sophomore Josh Butzke also has some experience after starting 11 games last season, while classmate Aidan Hoolachan is a hard-working, sparkplug-type player who can go at a number of positions. Among the freshman midfielders, Brian Ward could have the most immediate impact as a holding center mid. Nash says that Ward loves to do the dirty work at this somewhat thankless position that has been played so well by recent graduates Rand and Sean King. Jonathan Grad, who has shown creativity and a nose for the goal at center midfield, and lefty Mark Leibensperger are other newcomers vying for time at the position. Up front, the junior tandem of Burgdorf and Josh Plump have the potential to pour in plenty of goals. While Burgdorf led the way with six tallies last season, Plump was next with five even though he only started 10 of the 21 games. Plump is the fastest player on the squad, and he sent Bucknell to the Patriot League title match last season by scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win over top-seeded Colgate in the semifinals. Freshmen Pat Plourde, a big, physical forward gives Nash a much different look in contrast to Plump if needed, while newcomer Conor Keeley has also shown promise in the preseason. “I think this team expects to be successful, that we can build off last year,” said Nash. “We have better depth, where we think we can get to the point where we don’t have to hide somebody playing out of position.” From a leadership perspective, for the first time in Nash’s tenure the team will enter a season without permanent captains. The captain’s armband will rotate among a number of the veterans in the junior and senior classes, as Nash promotes a shared leadership. “Sometimes having one or two captains can create a big burden,” Nash said. “With this group everyone seems to pick each other up, and we are going to need different leaders in different situations. The team chemistry is awesome at this point.”

2011 BUCKNELL SOCCER BUCKNELL ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME The following are the Bucknell men’s soccer players who have been inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame. The most recent men’s soccer inductee was Mark Brotherton, who entered the Hall of Fame in 2006. Mark Brotherton (’83): A two-time co-captain, Brotherton was the first Bucknell soccer player to be named all-conference four straight years. He registered 21 goals and 12 assists for 54 points in his career. A Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top athlete in his senior class, Brotherton entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2006. Dave Domsohn (’89): A four-year letterwinner and All-East Coast Conference honors, Dohmson led the Bison in scoring each of his years and set the school career records for goals (52), assists (34) and points (138). Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999.

Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1984. Bruce Strasburg (’75): A four-year letterwinner, Strasburg was selected to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference team in 1973 and 1974 and led the Bison in scoring three of his four years. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1998. Scott Strasburg (’77): An All-America second team selection and Co-Most Vaulable Player in the East Coast Conference in 1976, Strasburg led Bucknell to three straight appearances in the NCAA Soccer Tournament. Gary Toubman (’76): A team captain as a senior, Toubman was a four-year letterman and two-time All-East Coast Conference selection. Over the last few years the Bucknell men’s soccer program has been well represented in both international and professional soccer. Sunil Gulati ’81 Gulati is currently one of the most influential figures in American soccer. He has been the president of the U.S. Soccer Federation since 2006, where he oversees the U.S. national team. Gulati served as Major League Soccer’s Deputy Commissioner from its launch until 1999 and currently teaches in the economics department at Columbia University while also serving as the president of Kraft Soccer Properties (New England Revolution). While at Bucknell Gulati was a team manager with the Bison. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bucknell and earned his M.A. and M. Phil. in economics at Columbia. Gulati and his wife, Marcela, have one son, Emilio, and one daughter, Sofia. Michael Lookingland ’05 Michael Lookingland became the first Bucknell men’s soccer player, and just the sixth from the Patriot League, to be drafted by a Major League Soccer team when he was selected by Real Salt Lake with the 13th overall pick in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft.

The 2005 Bucknell graduate, who made his MLS debut later that summer, has played professional indoor soccer with the Baltimore Blast since 2008 and has also seen action with the USL Second Division Harrisburg City Islanders and with Crystal Palace USA. He has won two championships Michael Lookingland with the Blast and one with the City Islanders. In July 2009 he was named to a National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) all-star team that traveled to Bermuda to play the Island Soccer League’s all-stars. Lookingland started all 76 games in his fouryear career at Bucknell. He became just the second player to be named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year twice. Conor O’Brien ‘10 After becoming the first Bucknell All-American in 33 years, Conor O’Brien attended the MLS scouting combine and later signed a professional contract with Blokhus FC in Denmark. O’Brien scored 10 goals in his debut season and helped Blokhus earn a promotion to the First Division. In 2011 he is playing in the Danish Superleague for SønderjyskE. O’Brien was a two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, and as a senior he was one of 15 finalists for the Hermann Trophy, awarded to the college player of the year. He graduated ranked in the top 10 on Bucknell’s career goals, points and assists list.

The Bison men’s soccer team has captured three of the last five Patriot League championships, winning titles in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Last season Bucknell became only the fourth team in Patriot League history to repeat as champion, and the Bison are just the second PL team to win three titles in a five-year span. In the 2006 Patriot League Tournament, fourth-seeded Bucknell won twice in penalty kicks. Buoyed by red-hot goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, the Bison defeated 14th-ranked Lehigh in the semifinals and Lafayette in the championship. Bucknell was the No. 1 seed in 2009, and playing at Emmitt Field knocked off Lafayette (on Conor O’Brien’s overtime goal) and American. In 2010 the Bison again won as the No. 4 seed, this time picking off Colgate and American without conceding a goal. Bucknell advanced to the NCAA Tournament after each of those Patriot League championships, and in 2006 and 2009 the Bison won firstround games, beating George Mason and Princeton, respectively. The George Mason win was Bucknell’s first NCAA victory since 1974.

THE PATRIOT LEAGUE In its third decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men’s and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

LIFE AFTER BUCKNELL

According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2010, 94 percent of the respondents were either employed or attending graduate school six months after graduation. Of Bucknell’s 881 graduates in that class, 861 (98 percent) responded to the survey. Of that portion of the class, 60 percent were employed, 24 percent were enrolled in graduate school, four percent were both employed and in graduate school part-time, and six percent were still seeking employment. Of those attending graduate school, 19 percent are pursuing degrees in social sciences and the humanities, 18 percent are in medical school, 10 percent are studying science, 13 percent are in law school and 17 percent are pursuing advanced degrees in engineering. The mean salary for the 2010 graduates responding to the survey was $50,172 and was highest for engineers. The mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in engineering was $57,860, and the mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administration was $51,762. Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences had a mean salary of $44,299. Most 2010 graduates (80 percent) were employed in the Northeast, with Pennsylvania (26 percent), New York City (17 percent) and New Jersey (16 percent) leading the way. Among the most popular employers of Bucknell graduates were firms such as Accenture, AmeriCorps, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, KPMG, Merck & Company, Inc., Peace Corps, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Teach for America, Turner Construction, UBS and U.S. Army. A total of 42 percent of the class respondents secured employment through Bucknell on-campus interviews, Career Development Center leads, networking or offers from former employees.

TOPS IN SALARY POTENTIAL Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 4 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2011 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer. The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated. In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median starting salary of $52,600 and a median mid-career salary of $108,000. The salary report also ranked Bucknell as 14th among all “top U.S. colleges,” including Ivy League and state universities, for mid-career earning potential. Bucknell alumni historically have had high job placement rates in their first year after graduation. Nine months after graduation, for instance, 84 percent of the members of the Class of 2010 were either employed or enrolled in graduate or professional school, according to Bucknell’s Career Development Center. A small percentage opted to travel, volunteer or do a combination of both. National Reputation A number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility. • In 2010, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers. • In February 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Bucknell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

Fox Soccer Channel has visited the Bucknell campus for live national broadcasts twice in the last four years. The 2007 game between Bucknell and Lehigh and the 2009 contest between the Bison and Lafayette were televised on Fox Soccer Channel. There were the first national television broadcasts to originate from Bucknell’s Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison won both games, topping Lehigh 3-1 in 2007 and Lafayette 1-0 in 2009.
