What it means to

be a bison

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

In addition to the 124 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 338 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 124.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its seventh year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS and RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 23 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 124 Academic All-Americans in 43 years and 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 23 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Coaching Staff

BRENDAN NASH

Head Coach Trenton State ’94 • 15th Season NASH’s Coaching Record • Overall: 130-108-37 (.540) • At Bucknell: 130-108-37 (.540) • 2000, 2003 & 2009 Patriot League Coach of the Year • 2003 & 2009 NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year • No. 2 on Bucknell career wins list • Coached Bison to 2006, 2009 & 2010 PL titles • Led Bison to second round of NCAA Tournament in 2006 & 2009 • Led team to school records for wins and shutouts in a season (2009) • Played in 1991 D-III national title game

After leading the 2009 Bison to perhaps the greatest year in program history, Brendan Nash guided the team to a Patriot League championship repeat — and a third conference title in five years — in 2010. One of the longest-tenured and most successful coaches in program history, Nash returns for his 15th season as head coach and 18th season as a member of the staff, and he is looking to get the Bison back to that championship level in 2013. Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest winning percentage (.540) in program history and is second on the wins list with 123, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in the competitive Patriot League in seven of the last 10 seasons under his direction, and in three of the last seven years the team has captured Patriot League championships, with NCAA Tournament first-round wins following two of those titles. In 2006, the Bison won their first Patriot League Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason. In 2009, Bucknell set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafayette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. As an encore, the 2010 Bison won the Patriot League crown as the No. 4 seed, knocking off host Colgate and American in the tournament. A 1-0 overtime loss to homestanding Penn ended the team’s run of NCAA first-round success. Bucknell’s success under Nash has not been limited to the championship seasons. In 2008, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in September. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. The Bison repeated the feat with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over No. 15 Penn State last season in State College. In 2002, Nash led the Bison to a then-school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which was a school record until the 2008-09 teams combined for 25. On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the highest-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. He would earn those honors again in 2009. During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 record. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the previous Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pittsburgh on a penalty kick. In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year. Nash helped 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien become Bucknell’s first All-

6

American in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Two of his players, O’Brien and Michael Lookingland ‘05, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Bucknell, with O’Brien currently playing for a superleague team in Denmark. Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached five Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber, 2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, Chris Hennings in 2008 and Patrick Selwood in 2009. Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year since 1997. A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons. While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III national championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsmanship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Longwood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference. Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been instrumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee. Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the College of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997. Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, coach soccer in New Jersey. Jamie is the head coach at Boonton High School, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School.

Matt Haney is in his second season with the Bucknell men’s soccer staff, where he works with the Bison goalkeepers. From 2000-03 and 2009-11, Haney was the lead assistant coach and goalkeeper coach at York College. He also served as interim head coach there in 2001. Haney was a collegiate goalkeeper himself at both Wilkes and Bloomsburg. At Wilkes he helped his team set school records for wins (16) and shutouts (13) in 1991, and a year later the Colonels won the MAC Northeast Division. Haney was Team MVP at Bloomsburg in 1994. During his first coaching stint at York, Haney completed his bachelor of science degree in elementary education, and he earned a master’s degree at Saint Francis University in 2009. Haney served as an assistant coach with the Red Flash while working on his graduate studies. From 2003-05, Haney was head boys’ soccer coach at nearby Millville Area High School. He has also coached the Elite and Premier U17 teams with the FC York Soccer Club, and among his extensive camp experience he has coached at the Bucknell Bison Soccer Camp since 2008.

pete ellis

Volunteer Assistant Coach East Stroudsburg ’83 • Seventh Season Former Bucknell assistant coach and longtime Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete Ellis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his seventh year in that role. After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area High School, where he became a health and physical education teacher, a post he still holds, and boys soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a sparkling 261125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Ellis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span. A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis relinquished his coaching duties with Lewisburg to spend more time with his family and afford him the opportunity to watch his daughter, Roz, play field hockey at Iowa.

Jerry shreck

Strength & Conditioning Coordinator East Stroudsburg ’96 • 12th Season The strength and conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

2013 Bucknell Soccer

Season Outlook

Joe Meyer Brendan Nash is entering his 15th season as head coach of the Bucknell men’s soccer program, and for the first time in quite a few years, he enters a season not entirely sure what his team will look like stylistically. He knows it will be a younger team, with six key players lost to graduation and only four seniors on the 2013 roster, and Nash figures it might take time for this group to establish its identity. “We don’t quite know who we are yet,” said Nash, who is Bucknell’s second-longest-tenured soccer coach behind only his predecessor Craig Reynolds. “By the time Patriot League play gets here on Sept. 28 we have to have it figured out. We have talent and we are much deeper, which means that we will be able to adapt better to game situations and injuries, but it also means that it is going to take us some time to see which combinations work best.” The Bison appear to be especially strong up the middle of the field, where sophomore striker Jesse Klug, sophomore center midfielder Chris Thorsheim, senior center back Mayowa Alli and sophomore goalkeeper Mike Lansing are all among the Patriot League’s best at their respective positions. Alli is the team captain, and his athleticism not only makes him a standout defender, but he is also extremely dangerous on restarts in the offensive third. Alli was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2010, and as a sophomore he was a First Team All-Patriot League and Second Team All-Region selection. He was the team’s leading scorer with seven goals as a defender in 2011, and he was off to another strong start last year until his season was disrupted by a shoulder injury in the middle of conference play. “The injury bug really hit our team last year, and one of the biggest ones was Mayowa,” said Nash, whose squad finished 7-8-5 overall and qualified for the Patriot League Tournament with a fourth-place finish. “This is Mayowa’s team. He is back to 100 percent health-wise and he has really run with the leadership aspect.” Three other veterans, seniors Joe Meyer and Josh Butzke along with junior Brian Ward, also figure to have prominent roles on defense. That trio combined to miss only one start all of last season. Meyer, a Capital One Academic All-America selection last year, spent much of his career at outside midfield, but he moved to right back last season, and Nash feels that is his best position. Ward also made a move

8

last season from holding center mid to left back, and this year he could play the other center back spot next to Alli. When Ward moved out of the defensive midfield position, Butzke capably slid in there. Sophomore Connor Willings started six games in the back four as a freshman last season, and he is a strong candidate to reclaim one of those starting spots. Junior Rafael Enriquez-Hesles and sophomore Mark Kramarchuk are also battling for minutes in the back line. Nash is very high on a pair of first-year defenders in Adam Bradshaw and Peter Krebs. Bradshaw brings quite a resume to Bucknell, as the Ontario native played for the Toronto FC Academy Team and the Canadian U18 National Team. Krebs could be a physical force at 6’4”, and Nash feels that once he adjusts to the speed of the Division I game Krebs can become a contributor. Behind that strong defensive line are a pair of talented sophomore goalkeepers in Lansing and Clarke Fox. Lansing had a terrific rookie season in 2012, posting a league-best 0.86 goals-against average to go with five shutouts. His .843 save percentage ranked ninth nationally and second among all Division I freshmen. Fox made two starts last season, posting a shutout win and a draw, and Nash is comforted knowing that he has the luxury of two topclass keepers in the program. “If Mike Lansing plays up to his ability, he can be talked about in the same company with the best goalkeepers that have ever played at Bucknell,” praised Nash. “He is freakishly athletic and is the fastest player on the team. We’ll see how he matures as a keeper as his career progresses, but he has all of the tools. And with Clarke, we really look at our goalie situation as having a 1A and a 1B. We have the utmost confidence in Clarke. He has gotten a lot better, and he will definitely get games this year.” Popular senior Orman Kimbrough, one of the team’s “glue guys,” will serve as the No. 3 goalkeeper. Offensively, Nash is looking for a breakout season from Klug, who started every game at forward as a freshman last year. Klug finished with three goals and four assists, but he seemed inches away from another bucketful of goals. He certainly had himself well-positioned, as his 66 shot attempts were far and away the most in the league. “For us to be successful, we are going to need Jesse to score goals,” said Nash. “Last year he played up front with some very experienced seniors in Brendan Burgdorf and Josh Plump, and Jesse really flourished as the go-to guy in the spring. He has a special ability to score goals.” Juniors Pat Plourde and Conor Keeley, along with freshman Justin Galiani, provide Nash with depth up front to spell Klug. Plourde has good size, strikes the ball well and often puts himself in dangerous positions. He can either give Klug a blow, or if the Bison need to press for a goal, he also plays well alongside Klug in a two-forward lineup. Keeley logged two goals and an assist in 16 minutes of reserve action against Adelphi last season, and Nash sees him as a good situational player who can come in and make smart runs in good spots. Galiani has the potential to be a handful for opposing defenses at 6’4”. He can get to the end of any ball in the air, and he brings a good change of pace when Klug comes off. Thorsheim reminds Nash quite a bit of former star center midfielder Conor O’Brien, who now plays for one of the top pro teams in Denmark. It is no coincidence that Thorsheim was given O’Brien’s old No. 8. Neither player was overly physically imposing, but both have off-the-charts field vision and terrific ball

skills. Thorsheim tallied four assists last season and earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors. “We are looking for Chris to expand his offensive game,” said Nash. “Our offense goes through him. He really reads the game well and has a very good offensive mind. He had a good rookie year and it is a matter of time before the goals start coming.” Elsewhere in the midfield, junior Jonathan Grad is another of the players now back healthy after battling injuries last season. Grad did score a goal in 17 appearances last season, but after offseason surgery has looked very good in the preseason. Junior John Miller moves to a new role at right midfield after playing mostly in the defensive third previously. Another junior, Mark Leibensperger, has a tireless work rate and is competing for time after scoring a goal in seven games last year. Sophomore Patrick Figgie started four games and played in 16 as a freshman in 2012. He scored two goals, including the game-winner in a 1-0 victory at NJIT, and he has the versatility to play on either side of the field. Freshmen Sebastiaan Blickman, Andrew Leischner, Austin Lenart and Crispin Muessle are all promising midfielders battling for playing time. In preseason training, Leischner stood out as a small, quick, attack-minded center midfielder. The Patriot League will have a new look in 2013 with the addition of Boston University and Loyola Maryland. With 10 teams now in the league, the Patriot League Tournament has expanded from four teams to six, with the top two seeds receiving byes for the quarterfinal round. Bucknell opens the 2013 campaign with four straight home games, and the Patriot League opener is also at home against Army on Sept. 28. The Bison play five of their nine conference games at Emmitt Field. “There is some uncharted territory for Loyola, Boston University and the whole league,” said Nash. “We don’t know them very well, but they also don’t know us. We have a good schedule where we will get to play a lot of games at home in front of our great crowds. We lost some tough games at home last year, and one of our primary goals for this year is to get back to protecting our home field.” While Alli will wear the captain’s armband, Butzke, Kimbrough and Meyer are all poised to play prime leadership roles as well. “Our senior class is excited for the opportunity to lead us,” said Nash. “There were some strong personalities among last year’s six seniors. Now these four have the chance to lead the team and write their own legacy.”

Patriot League Championships

2010

The Bison men’s soccer team has captured three of the last seven Patriot League championships, winning titles in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Bucknell became only the fourth team in Patriot League history to repeat as champion, and the Bison are just the second PL team to win three titles in a five-year span. In the 2006 Patriot League Tournament, fourth-seeded Bucknell won twice in penalty kicks. Buoyed by red-hot goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, the Bison defeated 14th-ranked Lehigh in the semifinals and Lafayette in the championship. Bucknell was the No. 1 seed in 2009, and playing at Emmitt Field knocked off Lafayette (on Conor O’Brien’s overtime goal) and American. In 2010 the Bison again won as the No. 4 seed, this time picking off Colgate and American without conceding a goal. Bucknell advanced to the NCAA Tournament after each of those Patriot League championships, and in 2006 and 2009 the Bison won firstround games, beating George Mason and Princeton, respectively. The George Mason win was Bucknell’s first NCAA victory since 1974.

the patriot league The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. The Patriot League began as a successful football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Fox Soccer Channel has visited the Bucknell campus for live national broadcasts twice in recent years. The 2007 game between Bucknell and Lehigh and the 2009 contest between the Bison and Lafayette were televised on Fox Soccer Channel. There were the first national television broadcasts to originate from Bucknell’s Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison won both games, topping Lehigh 3-1 in 2007 and Lafayette 1-0 in 2009.
