WHAT IT MEANS TO

BE A BISON

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014. All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 319 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 semester.

In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

Bucknell has earned 101 Patriot League championships in 25 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 129 conference players of the year, 110 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 605 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2015.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 25-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 18 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 126.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS AND RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 25 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 126 Academic All-Americans in 45 years and 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 25 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and the new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

COACHING STAFF

BRENDAN NASH

Head Coach Trenton State ’94 • 17th Season NASH’S COACHING RECORD • Overall: 153-124-41 (.546) • At Bucknell: 153-124-41 (.546) • 2000, 2003 & 2009 Patriot League Coach of the Year • 2003 & 2009 NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year • No. 2 on Bucknell career wins list • Coached Bison to 2006, 2009, 2010 & 2014 PL titles • Led Bison to second round of NCAA Tournament in 2006 & 2009 • Led team to school records for wins and shutouts in a season (2009) • Played in 1991 D-III national title game The architect of four Patriot League championship teams in the last nine years, Brendan Nash returns for his 17th season as head coach and 20th season as a member of the Bucknell men’s soccer program. Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest winning percentage (.546) in program history and is second on the wins list with 153, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in the competitive Patriot League in nine of the last 12 seasons under his direction, and in four of the last nine years the team has captured Patriot League championships, with NCAA Tournament first-round wins following two of those titles. In 2006, the Bison won their first Patriot League Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason. In 2009, Bucknell set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafayette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. As an encore, the 2010 Bison won the Patriot League crown as the No. 4 seed, knocking off host Colgate and American in the tournament. A 1-0 overtime loss to homestanding Penn ended the team’s run of NCAA first-round success. The Bison returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2014, this time winning the Patriot League title as the No. 5 seed in the second year of an expanded six-team playoff format. Bucknell blasted No. 4 Lehigh 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the tournament, then advanced to the final by outlasting Navy in penalty kicks. In the championship match, the Bison defeated top-seeded and host Boston University 3-2 on Sebastiaan Blickman’s dramatic overtime goal. Bucknell’s success under Nash has not been limited to the championship seasons. In 2014 the Bison won 13 games — second-most in program history — went 8-1-1 on the road and defeated American in a home Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal tilt. In 2008, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in September. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. The Bison repeated the feat with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over No. 15 Penn State in 2010 in State College. In 2002, Nash led the Bison to a then-school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which was a school record until the 2008-09 teams combined for 25. On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the highest-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. He would earn those honors again in 2009. During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 record. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the previous Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pittsburgh on a penalty kick. In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year. Nash helped 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien become Bucknell’s first All-American in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player

of the year. Three of his players, O’Brien, Mayowa Alli ‘14 and Michael Lookingland `05, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Bucknell, with O’Brien in 2013 playing for a UEFA Champions League-qualifying Superleague team in Denmark before moving on to a top-flight team in Austria last year. Alli, who won the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete in the Class of 2014, also began his career in Denmark. Lookingland was drafted by Real Salt Lake in the MLS and then carved out an all-star indoor career with the Baltimore Blast. O’Brien, Alli, Lookingland and Brendan Burgdorf ‘13 were all named to the 25man Patriot League 25th Anniversary Team prior to the 2015 season. Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached eight Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber, 2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, Chris Hennings in 2008, Patrick Selwood in 2009, two-time honoree Joe Meyer (2012, 2013), and current senior Jesse Klug, who earned the honor in 2014. Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year since 1997. A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons. While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III national championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsmanship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Longwood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference. Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been instrumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee. Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In addition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the College of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997. Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, coach soccer in New Jersey. Jamie is the head coach at Boonton High School, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School.

Assistant Coach Lock Haven ’08 • Sixth Season Patrick Long, a former team captain and allregion selection at Lock Haven, is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Bucknell men’s soccer program. Long, who previously had been an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg, helped the Bison win Patriot League championships in 2010 and 2014. A native of Lock Haven, Pa., Long graduated from his hometown school with a bachelor of science degree in secondary education and social studies, with a minor in coaching. As a studentathlete on the men’s soccer team from 2003-06, he was a two-time First Team All-PSAC selection and a two-time All-Northeast Region selection, making first team in 2005 and second team in 2006. A two-year team captain, Long won the team’s Player of the Year Award as a junior and Coaches’ Award as a senior, was a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and was a Third Team Academic All-American during his senior campaign. During the 2005 spring semester, he studied at Hope University in Liverpool, England. Long also played on the Lock Haven men’s basketball team in 2006-07. While completing his coursework at Lock Haven, Long served as a student assistant coach with the Eagles in 2007-08. He then moved on to East Stroudsburg as a graduate assistant coach as he completed his master’s degree in sports management with a 4.0 grade-point average in August 2009. He then remained at ESU as an assistant coach, helping the Warriors to an 11-win season. Long has been involved with the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy since 2011 acting as a small-group facilitator. Also, Long took three student-athletes to the USNA Leadership Conference in January of 2013 for a three-day summit. The Bison have succeeded both on the field and in the classroom during Long’s tenure. Mayowa Alli ‘14 went on to play professional soccer in Europe after graduating from Bucknell. Academically the Bison have also succeeded with a pair of Academic All-Americans in two-time honoree Joe Meyer (2012, 2013) and Jesse Klug (2014). Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year during Long’s time with the Bison. Long resides in Lewisburg with his wife Carol, an elementary school teacher, and their new daughter, Hanna Elizabeth.

PETE ELLIS

Volunteer Assistant Coach East Stroudsburg ’83 • Ninth Season Former Bucknell assistant coach and longtime Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete Ellis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his ninth year in that role. After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area High School, where he became a health and physical education teacher, a post he still holds, and boys soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a sparkling 261-125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Ellis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span. Since returning to Bucknell, in 2009 the team set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafayette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. As an encore, the 2010 Bison won the Patriot League crown as the No. 4 seed, knocking off host Colgate and American in the tournament. A 1-0 overtime loss to home standing Penn ended the team’s run of NCAA first-round success. The Bison then won another league

title in 2014 and returned to the NCAA Tournament. Ellis’ main function with the team is to assist Coach Nash with player development and match analysis. The Bison have succeeded both on the field and in the classroom with 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien becoming Bucknell’s first All-American in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Since 2007 two players, O’Brien and Mayowa Alli ‘14, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Bucknell. Academically the Bison have also succeeded with Academic All-Americans Chris Hennings in 2008, Patrick Selwood in 2009, two-time honoree Joe Meyer (2012, 2013) and most recently Jesse Klug (2014). Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year during Ellis’ time with the Bison. Coach Ellis is a 1978 graduate of Wethersfield (Conn.) High School, where his 1975 team captured the LL State Championship, and a 1983 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where he played for the Warriors’ soccer team from 1978-1980. Coach Ellis is also active with the Bison Soccer Camps as an assistant director and coach. Each year the Bison Soccer Camps have held a team camp and elite camp on campus and have reached out to the local communities and now offer several camps in locales throughout the Susquehanna Valley. Ellis also has coached over the years at the Lock Haven University Team Camp and various youth camps throughout Pennsylvania. He is an active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and past president of the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association. A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis is a second-generation college coach. His father, Richard Ellis, was the women’s softball coach at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. His daughter Roslynn is now a third-generation college coach, as she is the assistant field hockey coach at Temple after previous stints at Louisville, Massachusetts, Appalachian State and Wake Forest.

JERRY SHRECK

Strength & Conditioning Coordinator East Stroudsburg ’96 • 14th Season The strength and conditioning program at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator. A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition. A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness.

2015 BUCKNELL SOCCER

SEASON OUTLOOK

Zack Rockmore For the fourth time in the last nine years, the Bucknell men’s soccer team enters a season as the reigning Patriot League champion. A year ago, the Bison got hot at just the right time, sweeping Lehigh, Navy and Boston University to claim the title as the No. 5 seed. Eight starters and 23 of the 31 goals return from that team, but 17th-year head coach Brendan Nash cautions that the notion of defending a championship cannot not be a primary motivator for his side this season. “’Repeat’ is not a word that we talk about,” said Nash, who also guided the Bison to Patriot League titles in 2006, 2009 and 2010. “So many unexpected things happen every year in the Patriot League, and there are quality teams from top to bottom. You have to deal with the highs and

Chris Thorsheim

8

lows that happen in the Patriot League every year. But throughout the preseason our attitudes have been good. The guys know success is a process that happens over three months.” In preparation for the trials of Patriot League play, Nash has challenged his team with one of the toughest non-conference schedules in program history. The Bison earned a 1-0 win at No. 13 Maryland in an August exhibition match, and once the regular season begins they will face the likes of 15th-ranked Syracuse, 19th-ranked Xavier, Seton Hall, La Salle, Northern Kentucky, reigning Sun Belt champion Hartwick, and two of the top Northeast Conference teams in Saint Francis (Pa.) and Fairleigh Dickinson. “We will be ready for Patriot League play,” Nash understated. American, which upset No. 1 UCLA last season, along with Navy and Boston University were all ranked in the national top-20 at times last season. Bucknell was picked third in the 2015 preseason poll, behind Navy and Boston University, while forward Jesse Klug, midfielder Chris Thorsheim, defender Zack Rockmore and goalkeeper Clarke Fox were all named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. While Fox ended last season as the starting netminder — he posted a 0.88 goals-against average and six shutouts in 14 starts — the Bison are fortunate to have two of the league’s best in the senior class. Fox and Mike Lansing have both had moments of brilliance over the last three seasons, and Nash anticipates using both if necessary this fall. “We know that goaltending is our best and deepest position,” said Nash. “It will be interesting to see how it plays out as far as if one of them claims the position or if we have the luxury of picking one based on the opponent. I am not at all worried about our goaltending.” With Fox and Lansing in their final seasons,

the Bison have brought in a highly touted keeper in Ryan Ott to apprentice this fall. A native of Syosset, New York, the 6’5” Ott was listed as the third-best recruit in the state and the 13th-best goalkeeper prospect in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Bucknell must replace two starters on the back line following the graduation of captain Brian Ward in the middle and Mark Leibensperger on the left side. Rockmore is back to full fitness after suffering an injury in last year’s NCAA Tournament game at UNC Wilmington. In his first season with the Bison after transferring from Boston College, Rockmore finished 20 of his 22 starts and became a strong replacement for All-American Mayowa Alli at center back.

Connor Willings

@BisonSports

2015 BUCKNELL SOCCER

SEASON OUTLOOK

Sebastiaan Blickman “Zack is the cornerstone of our back four,” said Nash. “We really benefit from his speed and strength, and it will be up to the other three to adapt to his leadership. We are looking to figure out how to get the right guys in the right spots for their strengths.” Seniors Connor Willings and Mark Kramarchuk, junior Peter Krebs, sophomore Sterling Kirk, and freshmen Dany Teran and Tyler Peterson all have the ability to play either inside or outside. Junior Adam Bradshaw and sophomore Dan Bank are best-suited as outside backs. Willings has been a utility player for the Bison, seeing significant minutes as a midfielder, outside back and center back. Even though Willings

Clark Fox

has 56 career appearances under his belt, Nash feels that he is capable of a breakout senior year. The 6’4” Krebs was pressed into duty for seven starts as a freshman in 2013 but did not get into a game last season. He has looked good in preseason training, however, and may be back on the cusp of a prominent role. An interesting addition this season is Kirk, a sophomore who was not active a year ago due to a foot injury, although he did participate in the spring. Kirk came back in tremendous shape, and Nash says he is the team’s fastest field player. Bank was the regular starter at right back last season, while Bradshaw has seen time at left wing and left back. Parked in front of the back four is a pair of tall, athletic defensive midfielders in junior Sebastiaan Blickman and sophomore Jack Zollicoffer. Blickman was one of Bucknell’s 2014 postseason heroes, as he scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, in the championship game at Boston University. He has 29 starts over the last two campaigns. Zollicoffer started the first six games as a freshman last season before going down with an injury. He returned late in the year and assisted on Blickman’s dramatic golden goal in Boston. Freshman New Zealander Stefan Krystman is also in the mix at that position. “Seb and Jack know how to take care of business back there,” said Nash. “They are still learning how to play together.” Senior Patrick Figgie, who had two goals and two assists last season, and junior Austin Lenart are the incumbent starters at the outside midfield spots. Junior Crispin Muessle and sophomores Ben Derleth and Mike Moshier provide depth. At attacking center mid, the Bison are fortunate to have one of the best around in Thorsheim. One of 30 Division I players named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list, Thorsheim is already a three-time All-Patriot League selection and a two-time all-region pick. He ranked second in the league with seven assists last season, and he has 12 goals and 12 assists entering his final campaign. “Chris is doing a great job as a leader on the field,” said Nash. “He is a special talent, and he knows that we need to play through him in the center of the field.” Junior Andrew Leischner, who has 38 appearances over the last two seasons, is pushing to step into a starting role. The Bison will need another scoring option in the attacking third after the graduation of captain Jonathan Grad, who scored some big goals over the last few seasons. Klug is one of the premier goal-scorers in the region, and he will once again be the team’s primary target up top. He ranked second in the conference in goals (11) and points (27) last year, and he enters his senior year ranked in the top 10 in program history with 24 goals and 60 points. “Jesse is the best forward I’ve ever coached,” praised Nash. “He can stretch the defense and has a nose for the goal.”

Jesse Klug Junior Justin Galiani is a big, strong, fast forward who could be on the verge of a breakout season. Newcomers Zander Perelman and Bryan Da Silva provide depth while they continue to learn the nuances of the collegiate game. As the 2015 season nears, Nash knows that his team will go as far as his senior class takes it. With Fox and Lansing in goal, Willings and Kramarchuk in the back, Figgie and Thorsheim in the midfield, and Klug at striker, this is one of the most talented classes in Nash’s tenure. “This is a special group,” Nash said of his seniors. “They have been through the wars, and they are hungry for another shot in the NCAA Tournament. It is going to be so important how we deal with adversity. There is so much parity in the Patriot League, and we know there are going to be surprising results — both good and bad — and we are going to need our seniors to keep us on an even keel and get us through those tough moments. “We would like to get out to a good start, but that is not our primary focus,” added Nash. “We want to get people in the right spots to play the way we want to play by the end of the year.” That formula led to a championship a year ago, and the Bison are working hard to reprise it in 2015.

PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

2015 BUCKNELL SOCCER

The Bison men’s soccer team has captured four recent Patriot League championships, winning titles in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2014. In 2009-10, Bucknell became only the fourth team in Patriot League history to repeat as champion, and the Bison became just the second PL team to win three titles in a five-year span. In the 2006 Patriot League Tournament, fourth-seeded Bucknell won twice in penalty kicks. Buoyed by red-hot goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, the Bison defeated 14th-ranked Lehigh in the semifinals and Lafayette in the championship. Bucknell was the No. 1 seed in 2009, and playing at Emmitt Field knocked off Lafayette (on Conor O’Brien’s overtime goal) and American. In 2010 the Bison again won as the No. 4 seed, this time picking off Colgate and American without conceding a goal. In 2014, Bucknell claimed the title as the No. 5 seed, topping Lehigh 4-0, Navy in penalty kicks, and top-seeded Boston University 3-2 in overtime on Tournament MVP Sebastiaan Blickman’s golden goal. Bucknell advanced to the NCAA Tournament after each of those Patriot League championships, and in 2006 and 2009 the Bison won first-round games, beating George Mason and Princeton, respectively. The George Mason win was Bucknell’s first NCAA victory since 1974.

The Patriot League is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015-16, and in August the league unveiled 25-person anniversary teams for each sport. Bucknell had four honorees in men’s soccer: Mayowa Alli ’14, Brendan Burgdorf ’13, Michael Lookingland ’05 and Conor O’Brien ’10. Mayowa Alli (2010-13) — Alli captured Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors in 2010 in helping the Bison win their second league tournament title in program history. He would go on to earn first team All-Patriot League honors as a sophomore and senior and also was recognized as an NSCAA All-Region defender both years. In 2013, he was recognized with NSCAA Third Team All-America honors. Brendan Burgdorf (2009-12) — As a freshman, Burgdorf scored the game-winning goal in Bucknell’s 1-0 win over Princeton in the 2009 NCAA Tournament first round. He would go onto to record 55 points on 20G, 15A in his career with the Bison. Burgdorf was a four-time NSCAA All-Region selection, a three-time All-Patriot League choice and the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. Michael Lookingland (2001-04) — Lookingland finished a stellar four-year career with the Bison as a three-time All-Patriot League fullback who also received NSCAA All-Region honors three times. He was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004. Lookingland was drafted by Real Salt Lake of the MLS and had a long and successful indoor career with the Baltimore Blast. Conor O’Brien (2006-09) — O’Brien helped the Bison win Patriot League titles in both his freshman and senior campaigns and was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in each of his final two seasons. He is one of only two players to rank in the top 10 in League history in both goals (26) and assists (25). He was named the Philly Soccer News Men’s College Player of the Year as a senior and to the All-Patriot League Team three times, and he was a second-team NSCAA All-American as a senior in 2009.

2015 BUCKNELL SOCCER

THE PATRIOT LEAGUE The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. The Patriot League began as a successful Division I-AA (now called Football Championship Subdivision) football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in football, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing, Georgetown in both football and women’s rowing, and Richmond in women’s golf. These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Graduation Rates report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. League members have also distinguished themselves on the field of play. The Patriot League sponsors championship competition in 24 sports (11 for men; 13 for women). Championship teams from 15 sports are guaranteed advancement into NCAA post-season competition: baseball, men and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men and women’s lacrosse, rowing, men and women’s soccer, softball, men and women’s tennis and volleyball. Along the timeline of Patriot League history about three-quarters of the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year also received All-Patriot League status for their exemplary athletic performance. In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, while more than 12,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 student-athletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholarships.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

TOPS IN SALARY POTENTIAL

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support studentathletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first four years, and much more is planned in 2014-15. Approximately 60 student-athletes participate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the men’s soccer team in 2015 will be Mike Lansing and Chris Thorsheim. Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include:

Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 3 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2015 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer in Money Magazine. In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median early career salary of $56,000, and the magainze ranked Bucknell No. 37 on its list of best colleges. The 2007 game between Bucknell and Lehigh and the 2009 contest between the Bison and Lafayette were televised on Fox Soccer Channel. These were the first national television broadcasts to originate from Bucknell’s Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison won both games, topping Lehigh 3-1 in 2007 and Lafayette 1-0 in 2009. The 2014 game vs. Penn State appeared on NSCAA.com.
