What it means to
be a bison
“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910
The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, contribute to a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics
A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 15 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 19 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 118 Academic All-Americans in 39 years and 114 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 19 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity studentathletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team that will debut a new FieldTurf surface in 2010; the West Fields softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

BUCKNELL BISON 2010 Women’s Lacrosse Senior Carol Donohue
2010 Season Preview
Chelsea Peters has 91 career points entering her senior year.
For two-thirds of the 2009 season, the Bucknell women’s lacrosse team appeared headed for its first winning record in five years. The Bison were 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League. They had clinched a conference tournament berth and were a win away from the regular-season championship. But things went a bit awry in the final three weeks. Bucknell dropped its final six games, including three by one goal and another close loss to eventual-champion Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. Despite the disappointing finish, the graduation of leading scorer Bonnie Buechel and four-year starting defender Catherine Barry, and an off-season injury to scoring machine Carol Donohue, optimism is high for a motivated Bison squad entering the 2010 season. Donohue will likely be out until sometime in March, and her scoring production will be missed. Donohue had 37 goals and 54 assists last season, one year after piling up a school-record 71 points as a sophomore. Third-year head coach Caline McHenry admits that she will be a big loss, but that in the best-case scenario it could be a blessing in disguise. “Losing Carol is huge,” says McHenry. “Her teammates look to her for confidence, for a morale boost, and she is such a dynamic scorer. I think when she returns she is going to be extremely hungry. Having the game taken away from her has made her appreciate it even more. Not having Carol out there, others are going to have to step up. If that happens, and her teammates gain that much more confidence playing without her, then when she does come back strong we will be that much better offensively.” McHenry feels that the offense, which produced 10.1 goals per game last season, could be more diverse in 2010. She says this year’s squad is faster, and the team’s overall stickwork is much improved. That

has allowed the Bison to do a lot more offensively, particularly in transition. “Last year our offense was fairly onedimensional,” says McHenry. “There was a lot of 1-on-1 action and we were very predictable. Diversifying the offense is going to make us harder to scout, and there is going to be more motion and less isolation. I don’t expect that we will have one or two major scorers like in the past, especially when Carol is out. We want to have good balance.” Despite starting the new year without Buechel (44-10-54 in 2009) and Donohue, the Bison still have five returning players who produced double-digit points last season, including a 30-goal scorer in junior midfielder Julia Braun. A Second Team All-Patriot League pick last season, Braun totaled 34 points with 30 goals and four assists, but she was more than just a scorer. A force all over the field, Braun led the team in ground balls with 46 and was a close second to Buechel in draw controls (45) and caused turnovers (24). “Julia is going to be huge for us,” lauds McHenry. “She is a great player at both ends of the field. She can match up with anyone on defense, and she is a go-to player on offense. Julia is always pushing herself, and her teammates really respect her for that.” Senior middie Chelsea Peters had 24 goals and eight assists last season, and the fourth-year starter has 72 goals and 91 points in her career. Like Braun, Peters is strong anywhere on the field, and she was third on the squad with 22 draw controls in 2009. “Chelsea is going a great job and has really stepped up her game with Carol out,” says McHenry. “She is a senior with lots of experience and great energy. She is always positive and working hard. She’s not a rahrah type player, but you can always count on her. Chelsea is very good in transition, and she is going to be a really important
player for us.” Sophomore Ryan Gribbon is another two-way threat in the midfield, and she is cut from a similar mold as Braun. As a rookie in 2009, Gribbon produced nine goals and nine assists, ranking third on the team in helpers. “Ryan has the stamina to run all day long,” McHenry praises. “She is truly an allaround midfielder. She is a very smooth player, everything seems so effortless and fluid. And Ryan is one of the most positive and upbeat players on the team. I think she is going to have a big year.” Juniors Michelle Milot, Laura Van Schaack and Becca Devine all emerged last season, showing off some scoring potential. Milot finished with 16 goals and eight assists and can play both attack and midfield. She had two hat tricks and five multi-goal games a year ago. Devine scored 14 goals in 16 games, including a stunning six-goal game in a league win over Lafayette in late March. Van Shaack had three goals and three assists in 16 games off the bench. McHenry is looking for more consistency from all three, and with that they could all be important offensive cogs. “Michelle studied abroad in the fall, but she has come back extremely fit,” says the Bison coach. “Mentally she is completely checked in, and she is going to be huge for us on draws. You’re never really sure how players are going to come back from a semester abroad, but Michelle has been a very nice surprise, in a good way. Laura Van Schaack’s biggest strength is her speed. As a midfielder she really gets us up the field quickly. Becca is vital to our offense, and with Carol out, we need her to be the one to settle us down, communicate and get us organized. She is not flashy, but she has shown she can feed and score. Now we need to get her the confidence to do it all the time.” Another player combing back from a
DID YOU KNOW: Bucknell has an undergraduate student-faculty ratio of 11-to-1.
BUCKNELL BISON 2010 Women’s Lacrosse semester abroad is junior attack Lauren Peyser, who made five starts last season and scored a pair of goals. “Lauren has always been in great shape, so even though she was away in the fall we don’t need to worry about fitness with her,” says McHenry. “She can be a sneaky player. She is good at going backdoor and losing her defender.” Senior Kendall Thibeault is in her second year as a team co-captain, joining Braun, Donohue and Katie Fox. She had been a defender throughout her career before moving to attack in the middle of last season. Thibeault has excellent size and strength and a good stick, and she makes the attack unit all that much deeper. “We felt we can use Kendall’s skills to our advantage better on offense, so she is back at attack this season,” says McHenry. “She is a very steady, reliable player. She is level-headed and makes good decisions. Kendall is a great leader, and we know we can rely on her.” The freshman class has three players who can help on offense. Madison Hurwitz racked up 303 goals and 150 assists in high school at Council Rock South, and McHenry feels she is going to be a good one once she adjusts to the college game. “Madison is an awesome finisher and has a great attitude and work ethic,” says McHenry, “but she is still working on seeing the big picture at this level. She is going to be able to score for us, she just needs to get in the right spot within the flow of the offense. It has been a difficult transition for her, but her positive approach tells me she is going to get there very soon.” Annapolis naïve Paige Cobbs and Long Islander Ryan Wenk are both very promising two-way middies, and both are likely to contribute fairly quickly. “Paige Cobbs is a dynamic player, very
smooth with great endurance at both ends of the field,” McHenry says.” Offensively, she can use both hands to finish, and she is a very physical player. She comes from a tremendous high school program at St. Mary’s, and her adjustment to college has been very smooth. Ryan is also a very dynamic athlete, and she really had a great fall. She is extremely competitive and aggressive, and we expect to see her running up and down the field for us all year long.” Defensively, 2009 was an up-anddown season for the Bison. They allowed 205 goals (11.4 per game) on the year, but conceded eight or fewer six times. Bucknell shut out Davidson for the entire second half in a 9-8 win, and it yielded only one goal over the final 56 minutes in a 6-4 league win over American. Backstopping the defense was Alyssa DeLorenz, who was named the Patriot League Goalie of the Year and the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year following a strong sophomore season. DeLorenz started every game last year, averaging 9.3 saves per outing while posting a .476 save percentage. As a junior this season DeLorenz is the only goalie on the roster, and McHenry says she has come back in the best shape of her career. “Alyssa obviously had a fantastic year last year,” says McHenry, “and this year she has come back looking like a whole new person. She has put in so much hard work in the offseason, working out on her own. She has really re-focused and upped her game. Alyssa is going to have a great year, I think even better than last year.” DeLorenz will be helped by an experienced defense in front of her, led by the senior Fox and junior Ashley St. John. Both players started every game last season, and both are physical, aggressive defenders

who can take the ball away. “Katie is the anchor, and she has stepped up nicely as a leader and as the main voice of the defense,” McHenry states. “She holds her teammates accountable, and in turn they really look up to her. She is extremely competitive and is willing to do anything to win. Right next to her is Ashley St. John, who is also a vocal player who will get a lot of the key matchups. Ashley’s best strength is her 1-on-1 defense and her communication skills. She also has excellent speed and a great stick, one of the best sticks you will see for a defender.” Other returnees who could help on defense are senior Stephanie Stevens, who missed all of last season with injuries, and sophomore Allie Mongan, a versatile player who starts the season as a defensive middie. Stevens had surgery in the summer and is not yet 100 percent, but when she gets there she is fast, aggressive and knows the defense well. Mongan came in last season as a raw talent, and now is already one of the most improved players in the program since the end of last year, particularly in her stickwork. She is tall and strong and has a good separation burst. Freshmen Adrienne Wendling and Elana Taub are the newcomers on defense. Wendling comes to Bucknell from The Bullis School in Maryland, while Taub is also from that region, graduating last year from St. Andrew’s Episcopal. “We are looking for Adrienne to fill in the spot vacated by Catherine Barry,” says McHenry. “She is not flashy, but solid and very consistent. Early on she showed us that she is a good team player, a good communicator who slides well and has a very good understanding of the game. Adrienne also has a very good stick for a defender, so much so that we even toyed with putting her on attack. “Elana has great endurance and has a lot of potential. We need her to improve her stickwork, but she is a great teammate who works hard and loves being a part of our group.” McHenry says that the way last season finished has left a sense of unfinished business among the Bison returnees. “I think there was anger and disappointment in how last season ended,” she says. “After starting 9-3 we felt like we were becoming a very good team. I don’t think we ever lost confidence, but we just couldn’t finish out some close games against some very good teams late in the year. That made for a very motivated team in the offseason. “We took a big step forward last year, finishing at .500 and making the Patriot League Tournament. We set realistic goals last year, and we met them. The goals are definitely higher this year. The Patriot League is a fairly even conference in that we don’t feel there is anyone that we can’t play with.”

BUCKNELL BISON 2010 Women’s Lacrosse Bison Coaching Staff CALINE McHENRY HEAD COACH 3rd SEASON
Caline McHenry, a former All-American and Tewaaraton Trophy semifinalist at Duke and a two-year member of the U.S. National Team, was named head women’s lacrosse coach at
Caline McHenry led the Bison to a 9-win season in her second year at Bucknell.
Bucknell on Aug. 22, 2007. McHenry spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach at Davidson, and in 2006 she served as a graduate assistant coach at Ohio University, where she received a master’s degree in recreation and sport science. In her first season at Bucknell, she helped the Bison become one of the 10 highest-scoring teams in the nation. The team upset an Ohio State squad that had been nationally ranked just a week earlier. Last season she guided the Bison to nine victories — the program’s most since 1998 — and the team tied for second in the Patriot League standings with a 4-2 league mark. “I would like to sincerely thank the athletic department leadership for giving me the opportunity to coach at Bucknell,” said McHenry at the time of her hiring. “I am very honored to become part of such a prestigious institution and well-respected athletic program” “My experience as a student-athlete at Duke and as a coach at Davidson is parallel to Bucknell in terms of the quality student-athletes in the program, I’ve lived that life myself, and I know what it’s like to be at a school that puts a priority on academics. It is important that they are students first.” A native of Reisterstown, Md., and a graduate of prep powerhouse Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, McHenry went on to enjoy a tremendous collegiate career at Duke. She was a four-year letterwinner and a member of the Blue Devils’ 2005 Final Four team that finished 17-4 and shattered the school record for wins in a season. As a senior defender on that 2005 team, she also helped lead the squad to its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship, and she earned First Team All-America honors by both Inside Lacrosse and the IWLCA. An All-ACC selection in both 2002 and 2005, McHenry was selected as a semifinalist for the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy, which is annually bestowed upon the top men’s and women’s college lacrosse player. McHenry’s outstanding playing career led to a two-year stint with the United States national team, first with the U.S. Developmental Team in 2005-06, then with the US Elite Team in 2006-07. “I am pleased that Caline McHenry will be leading Bucknell’s women’s lacrosse program,” said Director of Athleticsand Recreation John Hardt at the time of her hiring. “We feel that this is a program that can contend for a Patriot League championship in the years to come, and we are eager to expose
14
our players to Caline’s experiences coaching and playing with the best women’s lacrosse players in America. Her remarkable pedigree also includes tenures at a number of prominent academic institutions, and her own experiences at Duke and Davidson will translate seamlessly into a Bucknell program that prides itself as an example of the scholar-athlete ideal.” “I am ready for the challenge,” McHenry added. “I have been extremely fortunate to be mentored by some of the best coaches in the game, from Kerstin Kimel at Duke, to Alison Valentino at Ohio, to Sue Murphy with the national team, to Betsy Economou at Davidson. These are all superior coaches, and they have all been tremendous role models for me.” McHenry is the 11th head coach in Bucknell women’s lacrosse history.
MEGHAN KEELAN ASSISTANT COACH 2nd SEASON
Meghan Keelan, a 2008 graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and a standout attack at UMBC, joined the Bison women’s lacrosse program prior to the 2009 season. “I am excited to welcome Meghan Keelan to the coaching staff and to the Bison women’s lacrosse program,” said head coach Caline McHenry at the time of her hiring. “She brings a great deal of leadership from her playing experience at UMBC. I look forward to working with her and for our team to benefit from her positive energy and keen offensive mind.” A four-year member of the Retrievers’ women’s lax squad and the team captain as a senior, Keelan appeared in 59 career games and was a two-year starter. She has two of the top-10 all-time assist totals in UMBC history, with 21 in 2008 (fifth all-time) and 18 in 2006 (ninth). Her 46 career assists rank 10th in program history. Keelan earned the team’s Unsung Hero Award last spring, and she also served as an undergraduate player-intern. In that role, she taught a lacrosse class to UMBC students, wrote correspondence to alumni, helped plan and run the team’s Junior Day, and assisted with the UMBC Elite Overnight Camp. In addition to the UMBC Elite, Keelan also has camp coaching experience at the UMBC Open, the Elite 300, Mike Faith’s Night Camp and the James Madison University Elite. She also coached ROME 2007, where she ran practices and coached the girl’s team at various summer tournaments. A native of Randallstown, Md., and a 2004 graduate of Mount de Sales Academy for Girls, Keelan has been heavily involved in community service. At UMBC she helped organize the Lee National Denim Day to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. She also volunteered at the Maryland Center for Special Equestrians, a facility aimed toward therapeutic horseback riding for children and young adults suffering from mental and physical handicaps.

DID YOU KNOW: Bucknell features more than 150 student organizations.
BUCKNELL BISON 2010 Women’s Lacrosse In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. In addition, the Patriot League finished first in the new NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid (combining with all eight of its full-time member institutions for an average of 984 out of 1,000). The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including consecutive wins in men’s basketball, a final four appearance in men’s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.
THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and
professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell. edu/ThePlanforBucknell

BUCKNELL DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the stan-
dard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of studentathletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.
