What it means to

be a bison

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, contribute to a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s studentathlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 119 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 119 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 293 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 200910.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 2009-10, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2010.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 119.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 16 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 20 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 119 Academic All-Americans in 40 years and 119 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 20 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity studentathletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team that will debut a new FieldTurf surface in 2010; the West Fields softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

2011 Season Preview

Adrienne Wendling started every game on defense as a freshman in 2010.

The Bucknell women’s lacrosse team will be turning to youth in 2011, with 14 freshmen dominating a 20-player roster. Coming off a frustrating two-win season that was undermined by a rash of injuries, coach Caline McHenry and the Bison are focusing on a fresh start this spring. “The biggest thing for us is to let the past be the past and realize that this is a new year, a new beginning,” said McHenry. “We have so many new faces and we are really embracing the future of the program, and at the same time the returning players have been great at creating a positive environment. We have four seniors, and they have just been so selfless. They always think about others first, and they have been really encouraging to the freshmen. They want them all to succeed.” One of those seniors, midfielder Julia Braun, is one of the top players in the Patriot League. Voted team captain for a second straight year along with classmates Alyssa DeLorenz and Ashley St. John, Braun is a two-time All-Patriot League selection. In 2010 she led the Bison in virtually every statistical category, finishing as the team leader in goals (37), assists (10), points (47), ground balls (34), draw controls (48) and caused turnovers (22). She was one of only two players in the nation last year to lead her team in each of those six categories, joining Hofstra’s Corrine Gandolfi.

6

Braun’s 48 draw controls were tied for second-most in a season in program history, three shy of the record, while the 37 goals were tied for ninth-most. In 2010 Braun scored a point in 15 of the team’s 17 games, and she registered multiple points 11 times. She posted a career-high nine points with five goals and four assists in a win over Howard, and a week later she had four goals and two assists against Colgate, giving her 15 points in consecutive games. Braun also had four-goal games against American and Wagner. On Bucknell’s career lists, Braun now ranks ninth in goals (89), sixth in ground balls (105), second in draw controls (133) and fourth in caused turnovers (62). “Julia continues to be our most vocal and respected leader,” said McHenry. “She works really hard, and her teammates admire her for that. On the field, quite simply she does everything for us. Julia has a passion for lacrosse, and it shows in the way she prepares and plays every day.” DeLorenz has played all but 34 minutes in goal over the last three seasons, including every second in the cage in both 2008 and 2010. As a sophomore she was named Patriot League Goalie of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a First Team All-Patriot League selection. DeLorenz enters her senior season ranked sixth on Bucknell’s career saves list with 484.

“Alyssa has done a great job over the last four years,” said McHenry. “She had to play every minute in goal as a freshman and really never had a chance to get her feet wet. She has really learned a lot about playing the position and about quarterbacking the defense. I think she is going to have a great senior year.” St. John has been a starter on defense in each of her first three seasons at Bucknell, and she is a projected starter once again in 2011. She is annually one of the team leaders in ground balls and caused turnovers, and this season she will be the veteran leader on a young defensive unit. “Ashley is a very vocal leader and has been great guiding our younger defenders,” said McHenry. “She is always very positive and encourages her teammates. She is a very good player in her own right and is going to be key for us this year.” St. John will not be the only returning starter on defense for the Bison, as sophomore Adrienne Wendling also returns. Wendling started all 17 games a freshman in 2010, recording 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. “Adrienne is going to have a huge year,” said McHenry. “She has had a very good preseason practice and is one of our hardest workers. She will support Ashley in a defensive leadership position.” After taking two years off from the

BUCKNELL BISON 2011 Women’s Lacrosse program to concentrate on academics, senior Christina Garman is back competing for a spot in the defensive rotation. A host of freshmen will also be competing for time on defense, as the Bison look to reduce their goals-against average of over 14 per game last season. McHenry cited Elizabeth Gauf and Sarah Shehadi as two who stood out in preseason workouts. Both will likely see time right away. Char Damico has great promise but was injured in the fall, while Emily Purtill and walk-on Jessica Maguire are also battling for playing time. Freshman Emily Fask will back up DeLorenz in goal. “Like everywhere else, there will be youth on defense, but Ashley, Adrienne and Alyssa are very experienced and will take the lead,” said McHenry. “I’m pleased with the progress of the defense.” Braun is the lone returnee in what should be a faster and more athletic midfield. Freshmen Kerri Althouse, Katelyn Miller, Sophie Kleinert and Andrea Feldman are all projected starters. Althouse is one of the fastest players on the team and good dodger and shooter. Miller is a two-way middie who excels at both ends of the field. Kleinert brings a little extra experience after a postgraduate year at Greenwich Academy, and she is excellent on draws. And Feldman, like Miller, is a hard-working player who contributes defensively as well as offensively. “I am really excited about our midfield,” said McHenry. “They can really push the ball in transition and want to break whenever possible. We have a lot of speed and a lot of versatility there.” Sophomore Madison Hurwitz, who had six goals as a rookie last season, is the lone returnee at attack and is battling for a starting position among a host

Senior Alyssa DeLorenz of promising newcomers. “Maddy has done a great job helping the freshman, and she sets a positive tone for the whole team,” said McHenry. “She knows the offense very well and has become a much more complete player this year.” Also look for Ali Carey, Lindsey Ferro and Molly Ford to see considerable playing time as freshmen, with Amanda Ayers coming along as well. Carey is small but a bundle of energy and a handful for opposing defenses. She is very quick and has a nose for the goal. Ferro has a very high lacrosse IQ and has picked up the offense very quickly. McHenry will be counting on her to be the quarterback of the offense. Ford is a very skilled offen-

sive player and a tremendous feeder. “Our young attack has been very eager to learn and they are working very hard and asking all the right questions,” said McHenry. “They are learning the system quickly and are putting things together faster than I was anticipating. It’s going to be a work in progress, but the talent is there and the work ethic is there.” Prior to last season, Bucknell had qualified for two of the previous four Patriot League Tournaments — the top four in the seven-team league earn postseason berths — and that is a major goal for the team heading into 2011. “We really want to get back to the Patriot League Tournament,” said McHenry. “The Patriot League is very strong this year, but we feel we can do it. Our newcomers know they don’t have time to play like freshmen. From our overall attitude to our work ethic to our talent level, it’s like day and night over last year. There is a fresh energy, and we want to come out with guns blazing. The six returnees have done a tremendous job letting go of last season and embracing the newcomers.” The young squad will be put to its first test on Feb. 13, when St. Bonaventure visits Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. That will be the first in a large dose of home games for the Bison, who play 10 of their 16 regular-season tilts in friendly surroundings. The Patriot League opener is March 12 at home against defending champion Navy, and the Apr. 23 season finale at Colgate could have major postseason implications.

BUCKNELL BISON 2011 Women’s Lacrosse Bison Coaching Staff CALINE McHENRY HEAD COACH 4th SEASON

Caline McHenry, a former All-American and Tewaaraton Trophy semifinalist at Duke and a two-year member of the U.S. National Team, was named head women’s lacrosse coach at

Caline McHenry led the Bison to a 9-win season in her second year at Bucknell.

Bucknell on Aug. 22, 2007. McHenry spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach at Davidson, and in 2006 she served as a graduate assistant coach at Ohio University, where she received a master’s degree in recreation and sport science. In her first season at Bucknell, she helped the Bison become one of the 10 highest-scoring teams in the nation. The team upset an Ohio State squad that had been nationally ranked just a week earlier. In 2009 she guided the Bison to nine victories — the program’s most since 1998 — and the team tied for second in the Patriot League standings with a 4-2 league mark. “I would like to sincerely thank the athletic department leadership for giving me the opportunity to coach at Bucknell,” said McHenry at the time of her hiring. “I am very honored to become part of such a prestigious institution and well-respected athletic program” “My experience as a student-athlete at Duke and as a coach at Davidson is parallel to Bucknell in terms of the quality student-athletes in the program, I’ve lived that life myself, and I know what it’s like to be at a school that puts a priority on academics. It is important that they are students first.” A native of Reisterstown, Md., and a graduate of prep powerhouse Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, McHenry went on to enjoy a tremendous collegiate career at Duke. She was a four-year letterwinner and a member of the Blue Devils’ 2005 Final Four team that finished 17-4 and shattered the school record for wins in a season. As a senior defender on that 2005 team, she also helped lead the squad to its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship, and she earned First Team All-America honors by both Inside Lacrosse and the IWLCA. An All-ACC selection in both 2002 and 2005, McHenry was selected as a semifinalist for the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy, which is annually bestowed upon the top men’s and women’s college lacrosse player. McHenry’s outstanding playing career led to a two-year stint with the United States national team, first with the U.S. Developmental Team in 2005-06, then with the US Elite Team in 2006-07. “I am pleased that Caline McHenry will be leading Bucknell’s women’s lacrosse program,”said Director of Athletics and Recreation John Hardt at the time of her hiring. “We feel that this is a program that can contend for a Patriot League championship in the years to come, and we are eager to expose

14

our players to Caline’s experiences coaching and playing with the best women’s lacrosse players in America. Her remarkable pedigree also includes tenures at a number of prominent academic institutions, and her own experiences at Duke and Davidson will translate seamlessly into a Bucknell program that prides itself as an example of the scholar-athlete ideal.” “I am ready for the challenge,” McHenry added. “I have been extremely fortunate to be mentored by some of the best coaches in the game, from Kerstin Kimel at Duke, to Alison Valentino at Ohio, to Sue Murphy with the national team, to Betsy Economou at Davidson. These are all superior coaches, and they have all been tremendous role models for me.” McHenry is the 11th head coach in Bucknell women’s lacrosse history.

MEGHAN KEELAN ASSISTANT COACH 3rd SEASON

Meghan Keelan, a 2008 graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and a standout attack at UMBC, joined the Bison women’s lacrosse program prior to the 2009 season. “I am excited to welcome Meghan Keelan to the coaching staff and to the Bison women’s lacrosse program,” said head coach Caline McHenry at the time of her hiring. “She brings a great deal of leadership from her playing experience at UMBC. I look forward to working with her and for our team to benefit from her positive energy and keen offensive mind.” A four-year member of the Retrievers’ women’s lax squad and the team captain as a senior, Keelan appeared in 59 career games and was a two-year starter. She has two of the top-10 all-time assist totals in UMBC history, with 21 in 2008 (fifth all-time) and 18 in 2006 (ninth). Her 46 career assists rank 10th in program history. Keelan earned the team’s Unsung Hero Award last spring, and she also served as an undergraduate player-intern. In that role, she taught a lacrosse class to UMBC students, wrote correspondence to alumni, helped plan and run the team’s Junior Day, and assisted with the UMBC Elite Overnight Camp. In addition to the UMBC Elite, Keelan also has camp coaching experience at the UMBC Open, the Elite 300, Mike Faith’s Night Camp and the James Madison University Elite. She also coached ROME 2007, where she ran practices and coached the girl’s team at various summer tournaments. A native of Randallstown, Md., and a 2004 graduate of Mount de Sales Academy for Girls, Keelan has been heavily involved in community service. At UMBC she helped organize the Lee National Denim Day to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. She also volunteered at the Maryland Center for Special Equestrians, a facility aimed toward therapeutic horseback riding for children and young adults suffering from mental and physical handicaps.

BUCKNELL BISON 2011 Women’s Lacrosse Entering its third decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. In addition, the Patriot League finished first in the new NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid (combining with all eight of its full-time member institutions for an average of 984 out of 1,000). The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including consecutive wins in men’s basketball, a final four appearance in men’s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and

professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell. edu/ThePlanforBucknell

BUCKNELL DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the stan-

dard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of studentathletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

DID YOU KNOW: In addition to its 27 varsity programs, Bucknell has 19 club sports, including lacrosse.
