DID YOU KNOW: Bucknell ranks 25th in academic reputation among all U.S. liberal arts colleges.

What it means to

bE a bison “... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.” — Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, contribute to a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2012, Bucknell ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 399 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012-13 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 509 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2012-13.

In addition to the 124 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 338 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including nine in 2012-13.

Bucknell has earned 95 Patriot League championships in 23 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 120 conference players of the year, 103 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 570 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2013.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 23-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 16 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 124.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, an Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its seventh year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS AND RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 23 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 124 Academic All-Americans in 43 years and 131 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 23 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. Celebrating its 10th birthday in 2012-13, the facility has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new indoor instructional golf center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

2013 WOMEN’S LACROSSE

2013 Season Preview

Andrea Feldman is a three-year starting defender for the Bison and has never missed a game.

Year two of the Randall Goldsborough rebuilding plan launched back in the fall, and now the Bucknell women’s lacrosse squad gets to put a measuring stick on all of that hard work as the official 2013 campaign gets underway. The Bison have quite a daunting nonconference schedule ahead of them, including three straight nationally ranked opponents in a row to start the season, beginning with No. 18 Stony Brook at Graham Field on Feb. 16. No. 19 Johns Hopkins and No. 10 Penn State quickly follow, with programs like Duquesne, George Mason and George Washington on the horizon a bit later. Even though the Bison will still be extremely young in 2013 - the team had no seniors last year and has only three this season - Goldsborough is trying to position the program to challenge for a Patriot League title and even a spot in the top 20 itself one day soon. Tackling a high-quality schedule is part of that foundation. “We have a very tough schedule, and we are going to make sure that we learn from every experience,” said Goldsborough. “This competition will help us gain a better understanding of how the game is played. We need to focus on our own development first, and then start trying to prove ourselves to others.” Even though the average age of this Bison squad will be one of the lowest in the country, they do return practically all of their key contributors from a year ago, many of whom were quickly thrown into fray. Bucknell returns 185 of its 190 goals from last season, and every 2012 defensive starter is back. Add to the mix a promising first-year class, and Goldsborough is excited about the team’s progress. “Working with this team every day since the start of fall ball, you can just see the improvement that we have made, even since the end of last season,” Goldsborough said. “With that experience has come an increased level of confidence and a just a better understanding of our system. The investment part was there last year, they put in the work, but now it is becoming very important to them to do well and do things consistently the right way. This group wants to build the culture of Bucknell Lacrosse. They realize that they are an important part of setting the tone for our future. This

6

Madison Hurwitz is a building process, from practice to practice and from game to game, they are intent on getting better, and that is so exciting to see.” The Bison finished 5-12 last season, but they did manage to pile up plenty of goals. Bucknell averaged 11.2 goals per game to rank in the top half of all Division I teams. Five Bison scored at least 20 goals, and the team scored more than 20 goals in a game three times. For the second year in a row, Bucknell’s leading scorer was a freshman. This time it was Arriana Sajjad, who tallied 51 points on 38 goals and 13 assists, and she also broke the school’s single-season record for draw controls with 58. Sajjad earned a Patriot League Rookie of the Week award after tallying 11 goals in back-to-back games against Liberty and American, and she closed the year with four straight hat tricks. Often she had the ball in her stick late in close games, particularly later in the season. “Arriana is not afraid to go 1v1 against anyone,” said Goldsborough. “She is not looking for personal accolades. She just gets the ball and goes, and now she is learning that because she is such a threat, that opens even more options.” Two seasons ago middie Katelyn Miller led the team in scoring as a rookie, and she was even better last year when she logged 47 points on 35 goals and 12 assists. Miller is one of the league’s top two-way players, and she garnered Second Team All-Patriot League and Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades last spring. She led the

squad in ground balls (35) and caused turnovers (24), and she also corralled 51 draw controls. Miller’s statistical production stems from a non-stop work rate, something her coaches say clearly rubs off on her teammates. “She is the hardest-working player on the team,” Goldsborough said of Miller. “We can rely on her to give full effort for any 50-50 ball in the midfield, she is going to throw her body around and make a big play for us. She takes care of all the little things, and now we don’t have to count on her to do all of the scoring.” One of Bucknell’s most experienced players is senior attack Madison Hurwitz, who is coming off a 25-goal, 16-assist season, her second straight campaign with at least 25 goals. Hurwitz is tall and sees the field well, and she has vastly improved as a finisher around the crease. “Madi has been our most consistent attacker,” said Goldsborough. “She has good, tight stickwork and she recognizes when cutters are open. But most importantly, she knows that this is her last season, and she badly wants the team to be successful. She does an amazing job as captain.” The Bison return two other 20-goal scorers, including another senior in Ryan Wenk, who did not play in the fall but is back with the squad and figures to fill one of the feeder spots up front. Wenk scored 20 goals last season, a new career-high. Sophomore Emily Kookogey was a pleasant surprise in 2012, pumping in 31 goals to go along with six assists.

DID YOU KNOW: Bucknell has an undergraduate student-faculty ratio of 10-to-1.

2013 WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Kerri Althouse She has one of the hardest shots on the team, and Goldsborough thinks she still has not reached her full potential. Other returning attackers include sophomores Claire Switala, Chloe Chou and Carly Downs. The Bison suffered a blow in the fall when junior Lindsey Ferro went down with a season-ending knee injury. One of the team’s premier feeders, Ferro ranked third in the Patriot League with 21 assists last season. Co-captains Adrienne Wendling, a senior, and junior Sophie Kleinert will again play vital roles in the midfield, and particularly taking draws. Kleinert scored 13 goals last season while serving as the primary draw specialist. Wendling added three goals and four assists, and Goldsborough said that both players have spent countless hours on their draw technique, which hopefully can translate into more fastbreak opportunities. Wendling ranked second on the squad with 54 draw controls last season. “Adrienne is another of our hardestworking players, both in the weight room and on the field,” said Goldsborough. “She never has an off day. She is constantly improving and is a great role model for what it means to work hard. Sophie is the same way. She does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work with the team, and everyone trusts and respects her so much.” Another veteran midfielder is junior Kerri Althouse, who played in all 17 games last season with six starts. Althouse is not flashy, but she is very consistent, and she figures to be on the field quite a bit this spring. Keep an eye on sophomore middie

Sophie Kleinert Blair McDonald, who chipped in eight goals last season. She is one of the fastest players on the team, and Goldsborough marveled at the difference in her confidence level from year one to year two. Another returning midfielder is sophomore Cori Thielemann, who came on strong at the end of last season and earned starts in the final three games of the year. Thielemann can be a multidimensional player, as she has speed, a strong left hand and good stick skills. Bucknell has some potential contributers among the newcomers in the attack and midfield positions. Goldsborough said that middie Sam Rickels comes in as one of the fastest players on the team, and she might already be one of the most polished freshmen on the squad. Rickels is a lax fanatic who has shown the ability to beat a defender to the goal. Ohio native Ally Furbay got a late start after injuring a knee back in June, but she is cleared to play this spring and could help out anywhere on the field. Nicki Heldberg stands just under six feet and has shown plenty of potential in the attacking end of the field, and walk-on Emily Becker is another tall middie at 5-10, and Goldsborough has been extremely impressed with her early progress. Bucknell essentially returns four starters on defense. Juniors Andrea Feldman and Elizabeth Gauf have been been regulars since stepping on to campus two years ago, and sophomore Alex Wallace started the final 13 games last season. Junior co-captain Char Damico was a starting defender until suffering a season-ending knee injury in warm-ups prior to the fourth game of last season at Manhattan.

DID YOU KNOW: Half of Bucknell’s classes have 17 students or fewer.

Cori Thielemann “Char is back to 100 percent, and she is so focused on coming back and proving herself gain,” said Goldsborough. “She has bounced back even stronger than before she got hurt, and she is one of the best role models you can have for the younger players. She is a great communicator and problem-solver.” Feldman serves as the backbone of the defense, a strong communicator who is charged with directing her teammates in terms of positioning. Gauf is also a solid defender, and she helps spearhead the clearing game with confident ball-carrying ability. Wallace came to Bucknell as an attack player before transitioning to defense, so not only does she have outstanding stick skills as well, but she also understands the mindset of an attacker. Sophomores Rebecca Vetere and Caroline Collins gained valuable experience last season and could be key contributors in 2013. Collins anticipates well and is excellent between the 30s. Vetere battled an illness in the fall but has improved her stickwork and passes. Freshmen Rennie Tankersley, Emma Dyson, Emma Holt and Julia Tomeo are all battling for playing time on defense. The Bison were hampered by inexperience in goal last season. Sophomore Caroline O’Neill now has a full year plus a fall-ball session under her belt, and she is being pushed by freshman Charlotte O’Donnell. Goldsborough said that O’Neill is thriving off the competition in cage, and her better understanding of the team defense has helped her as a ball-stopper. O’Donnell has very quick reactions and is adept at making the point-blank save. Junior Emily Fask is also part of the goalie triumvirate.

2013 WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Bison Coaching Staff RANDALL GOLDSBOROUGH

Randall Goldsborough, a former standout player at the University of Maryland and with the U.S. National Team, is in the second year of her second stint as Bucknell’s head women’s lacrosse coach. Goldsborough previously coached the Bison HEAD COACH in 2003 and 2004, leading the team to .500 or better records 4th SEASON and berths in the Patriot League Tournament both years, and she returned to the Bucknell sideline sid prior to the 2011 campaign. In her first two seasons at Bucknell, Goldsborough coached back-to-back Patriot League Offensive Players of the Year in Suzanne Raffaele and Meredith Wright, as well as a PL Defensive Player of the Year in goalie Nicole Kallis. The Bison finished 8-8 in 2003 and 8-7 in 2004, and in 2003 they defeated Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals to reach the championship game for the first time in program history. Goldsborough’s 2004 team placed a national-best 10 student-athletes on the IWLCA AllAcademic Team, and that squad’s 3.43 combined grade-point average was the second-best mark in the nation. “We are certainly pleased and excited to welcome Randall Goldsborough back to Bucknell,” said director of athletics and recreation John Hardt in announcing her hiring in June 2010. “In her two previous seasons here, she was highly regarded by her student-athletes and our entire staff, and we were sorry to see her leave us after the 2004 season. Randall has achieved success at every level of lacrosse as both a player and coach, and she is adept at passing on all the experiences that she has collected through the years.” “I am absolutely thrilled to be back at Bucknell,” said Goldsborough. “I’d like to thank John Hardt for giving me this opportunity. It was really insightful talking to John and the staff and some of the student-athletes on the team throughout the search process, and I really came away with the feeling that everyone here is excited about the future of the program and the success that we know we can have. The timing is perfect for me to come back and take over a program that I feel is capable of achieving a lot of success in the very near future. Bucknell has always had a special place in my heart ever since I left, and I have been waiting for the right chance to get back. We have a lot of work in front of us, but there is a lot of talent on the team, and I can’t wait to sprint right back into it and get started again.” Following the 2004 campaign, Goldsborough departed Bucknell to continue her international playing career while also serving as girls’ athletic director and varsity lacrosse and soccer coach at The Bullis School in Potomac, Md. In 2007 she headed west to become assistant women’s lacrosse coach and recruiting coordinator at Stanford, where she helped lead the Cardinal to the MPSF championship. Since the 2007-08 academic year, Goldsborough has been serving as a physical education and health teacher as well as head girls’ lacrosse and soccer coach and assistant basketball coach at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. A 1997 Maryland graduate with a degree in kinesiological sciences, Goldsborough was part of three NCAA championship teams in College Park. A student-athlete on the Terrapins lacrosse squad from 1993-96, the four-year starter was a member of Maryland’s back-to-back national championship teams in 1995 and 1996. In addition, she served as an assistant coach for her alma mater when the Terps won their third consecutive national title in 1997. She went on to serve as an assistant coach at North Carolina in 1998, where she helped the Tar Heels reach the NCAA Final Four. After a one-year stint as lacrosse and soccer coach at her alma mater St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, Md., in the fall of 1999 she earned her first collegiate head coaching position at Division III Franklin & Marshall. While in that role, she led the team to a top-15 national ranking in each season, while also consistently coaching players to regional and national All-America status. She accumulated a 26-22 record with the Diplomats and led her team to two straight Centennial Conference semifinal appearances. An active participant in national coaching camps and clinics since 1993, Goldsborough has also been heavily involved in lacrosse on the international level. She was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1994-2006 and was part of gold medal-winning U.S. World Cup squad in 2001. Goldsborough, who also played on the soccer team at Maryland, has been a consultant to the Wales national women’s lacrosse team, and in 2010 she coached a team with the Rebels Lacrosse Club.

One of Randall Goldsborough’s first tasks upon her return to Bucknell as head women’s lacrosse coach was to hire Forrest Stillwell as her assistant coach. Since 2007, Stillwell had served as head varsity girls’ lacrosse coach at Holy Innocents’ ASSISTANT COACH Episcopal School in Atlanta, Ga., prior to coming to Bucknell. 2ND SEASON Stillwell, who is involved in all aspects of on-field coaching, scouting and recruiting at Buck Bucknell, was one of the most successful high school coaches in the state of Georgia after taking over a program without a winning tradition. While supervising a staff of five coaches, he helped lead Holy Innocents’ to the 2011 state championship game as well as the 2010 state semifinals. Stillwell was selected to coach in a statewide all-star game in both 2008 and 2009, all this even though the team finished 2-15 the year before his arrival. In addition to his duties as head girls’ lacrosse coach, Stillwell was also an outdoor and physical education teacher, where he implemented a new K-12 curriculum. He also served as an assistant football coach for a team that made the state playoffs every year from 2008-10 and reached the quarterfinals in 2009. From 2005-08, Stillwell held the role of assistant athletic director at the school. Last January, Stillwell was a lecturer as the annual US Lacrosse Convention in Baltimore. He has worked with the Positive Coaching Alliance and is a co-sponsor with Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Stillwell has been the co-owner of the Atlanta Draw, a competitive U-13 travel lacrosse team, and he is the owner of Team and Outdoor Performance LLC, a company that specializes in designing team-oriented lacrosse camps and outdoor leadership trips. Stillwell is a 2001 graduate of Auburn University with a degree in political science. His coaching career began as an assistant football coach at Citrus High School in Inverness, Fla., in 2001, and he later served as head girls’ soccer coach and assistant football coach while teaching history and economics at Crystal River (Fla.)
