What it means to

be a bison “To me, what it means to be a Bison is giving your heart, mind and body to a school that you are proud of, with friends who are like family. It is desire and love for not only your game, but your team, and your school.” — Chelsea Brinkman ‘10

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime. Christa Matlack

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s studentathlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 255 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 118 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 293 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 2009-10, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2010.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections with 118.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS and RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 16 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 20 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 118 Academic All-Americans in 40 years and 118 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 20 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Varsity Softball Field; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Ben Landis

Head Coach Bucknell ’96 • Sixth Season Landis’ Coaching Record • Overall: 71-48-11 (.588) • At Bucknell: 55-36-5 (.599)

Since Ben Landis took over as head coach of the Bucknell women’s soccer program in 2005, the Bison have enjoyed the most successful five-year span in program history, capturing a Patriot League tournament title in 2005 followed by back-to-back regularseason crowns in 2006 and 2007 and runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. With a record of 55-36-5 at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Landis has helped the Bison surpass the 10win plateau in each of his first five seasons, marking the first time in program history the squad has posted double-digit wins in at least three consecutive seasons. The Bison have also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in each of his five seasons. In his first season back at his alma mater in 2005, Landis guided Bucknell to its second Patriot League championship, one of many successes the Bison achieved under his direction that season. The squad more than doubled scoring production from the year before, and went on to face Penn State in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Bison reached new heights, tying school records for wins, both overall (12) and in league play (6), and breaking the team’s previous marks for best goals-against average (0.99), winning percentage (.735) and winning and unbeaten streaks after posting seven consecutive victories. The Bison also earned their first Mid-Atlantic regional rankings from both SoccerBuzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and posted its first win over a nationally ranked opponent, handing No. 14 Navy, which held a 19-0-0 record at the time, a 2-1 loss in the final game of the regular season to clinch a share of the Patriot League regular season title and earn the right to play host to the league tournament as the No. 1 seed. In 2007, Landis coached Bucknell to a 5-1-1 league mark, earning the squad the right to host the Patriot League Tournament as the regular season champion. The Bison, who finished as the tournament-runners up, posted an 11-8-1 overall mark, including a convincing 4-1 win over traditional Ivy League power Princeton. In 2008, Bucknell won 11 more matches and went 5-2 in league play. Landis’ squad broke the school record with eight shutouts and posted a big 3-2 road win over Maryland. He also coached Jennifer Dervarics to her second straight Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honor. Last season, Landis’ squad went 10-8-1 overall and 5-2 in the league, and for the first time in program history the team earned a point against Penn State with a 0-0 draw in front of a large home crowd. And for the fourth year in a row Landis coached a major award winner, as Christa Matlack was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. The third head coach in the 18-year history of the women’s soccer program, Landis, a 1996 graduate of Bucknell started his coaching career at

Athletics mission statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.

Season Outlook

2010 Bucknell Soccer

Kelsey Johnson The Bison women’s soccer team, now firmly entrenched as an annual Patriot League title contender, rightly holds high hopes for the coming season as it boasts depth and experience across the field. Sixth-year head coach Ben Landis has a bit of star power with four returning all-conference honorees, including reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Christa Matlack, along with a solid nucleus of dependable players who helped produce the program’s fifth straight season of double-digit victories last fall. Bucknell struggled early in 2009, and Landis countered with some formation changes as the season progressed. The moves worked, as the second half of the campaign was ignited by an historic 0-0 draw with Penn State followed by a rout of Ivy League rival Cornell. Then came a solid 5-2 Patriot League campaign where the Bison were in contention for the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament right up until the final weekend. A frustrating 1-0 semifinal loss to American in which the winning tally came on a 90th-minute own goal has the Bison returnees motivated for more in 2010. Landis anticipates using a 4-3-3 again this fall in order to take advantage of the team’s strength in the center of the field. That system worked well in the spring season, when the Bison went 5-1-1 while surrendering only three goals 560 minutes. The Bison feature two of the best central defenders in the league in seniors Amanda Citron and Kelsey Johnson, a holding center midfielder in senior Caitlin Holtz who has never missed a start in her career, a fast-rising sophomore center mid in Kayla Yee, and two senior all-stars up top in Matlack and two-time all-leaguer Kelliann Doherty. Defensively, the two biggest holes to fill are at right back and goalkeeper. In the goal, the Bison must replace two-time All-Patriot Leaguer Kathryn Sutton, the program’s career leader in shutouts and goals-against average. The good news is that both junior Colleen Garrehy and sophomore Sandita McDermott got a taste of game action last season. Garrehy has the most experience, appearing in six games with four starts last year. She earned her first career shutout with a 1-0 overtime win over Mount St. Mary’s and posted a 2-2 overall record. Landis says that the battle for the 2010 starting job will carry into preseason practice. “It is either of their jobs, with no clear frontrunner coming into preseason,” said Landis. “Colleen has a bit more game experience, and she came through last season when we needed her. They split time in the spring and both played very well. We hope to settle on one keeper by the season opener, but there will always be competition for the starting job. Most importantly, the team has confidence in both of them.” Citron, in her second year as a team captain, and Johnson anchor the defense. Citron has played in all 59 games over the last three seasons with 56 starts. A year ago she was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection, and she has been named to each of the last two Patriot League All-Tournament Teams. Citron did not participate in spring soccer as she was studying abroad in Alicante, Spain, but Landis feels that she is such a technically sound player that her time away from the program will not affect her 2010 performance.

Johnson is perhaps the team’s most physically imposing player, and she is coming off a terrific junior year in which she earned team Defensive MVP honors. Johnson was a Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week last season, and like Citron and Holtz has never missed a game at Bucknell. Johnson was limited in the spring due to an injury but is healthy again entering preseason training. “When healthy Amanda and Kelsey are two of the best defenders in the league,” lauded Landis. “They are both strong and reliable and will be heavily counted upon to hold our back line together.” The silver lining of not having Citron and Johnson available in the spring is that the remainder of the defensive unit received plenty of extra playing time. Filling in at center back were junior Casey Crowley and senior Julianne Harris. Crowley is primarily a left back, has 21 career starts under her belt, and was the team’s top newcomer in 2008. Harris began last season as a starter and scored the winning goal on a header against Saint Francis (Pa.). Sophomore Meghan Fitzpatrick had a very good spring after being unable to play during her freshman season and will compete for the right back spot vacated by four-year starter and former all-conference selection Lauren Stoller. Sophomore Jenna Tryon, who typically plays midfield, saw some action on defense in the spring and is also competing with classmate Corinne Collins. And Landis feels that freshman Bridget Gilmartin could be an immediate impact player at any one of the four back line spots. “We lost one key part on defense in Lauren Stoller, but the good news is that in the last year we have built a tremendous amount of depth from within,” said Landis. “This is clearly one of our strengths. I’m excited to see who is going to step up and win the right back spot. There is some great competition there.” A former back line stalwart who made the successful transition to a defensive-minded midfield position last season is the veteran Holtz. A First Team All-Patriot League selection in 2008 and a second team pick last year, Holtz is one of the most versatile players in the league. She has excellent pace, works the ball out of the back well, handles all of the team’s free kicks and corner kicks and can even put the ball in the goal on occasion. In 2008 she led the league with eight assists, and last year in her new role she collected two goals and five more assists. Her 14 career helpers are tied for sixthmost in program history. “Caitlin is one of the best linking center midfielders in the league,” commented Landis. “She is our key piece between the defenders and forwards, and between left and right. We love her between our two center backs, and in many ways she is the quarterback of the team.” Juniors Sadie Canter and Jane Voris, sophomore Taryn Boucher, and freshmen Alex Degarmo and Corey Tipton are all vying for time in the midfield. When it comes to goal-scoring, the conversation starts with Matlack, the league’s premier point-getter. The rising senior produced a career-high nine goals last season, including a league-high six in conference play, and was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year as well as an NSCAA All-Region honoree. “Christa always gives it her best effort, whether it is as a player, a student or a citizen,” said Landis of Matlack, who last year became the first Bucknell player ever to receive

NSCAA Scholar All-America plaudits. “She demands the most of herself in everything that she does, never takes a shortcut, and that rubs off on our younger players.” Senior Brooke Stokes is another stalwart up front. Stokes, who was elected co-captain along with Citron this offseason, normally plays wide on the right side and has four goals and six assists in her career. Landis likes Stokes’ range, noting that she recovers back well, in essence coving two-thirds of the field. Doherty has been a potent scorer from the time she entered the program, and she heads into her senior year with 14 goals and six assists in her career. Doherty, who can play both forward and midfield, is a two-time all-conference performer. Yee is coming off a terrific rookie season in which she was voted Bucknell’s top newcomer and was a candidate for Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Yee started all 18 games last season, producing a goal and three assists. A solid tackler who was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team in November, Landis feels Yee has the potential to up her scoring totals down the line. Another experienced midfielder, albeit unknown to Bison fans, is junior Tara Cort, who has transferred into the program from Clemson. Cort started every match as a freshman at Clemson and was a regular again last year. She will compete for playing time along with a host of other promising young players, including junior Megan DeGennaro, sophomore Emily Trosch, and freshmen Liz Dwornik, Chelsey Garkowski and Nicole Papaleo. “We have a ton of depth up front, which is key because in a perfect world I like to play a lot of different players at forward,” said Landis. “We have athleticism and experienced players who can score goals when Christa Matlack comes off for a breather. Last year when Christa came off, we seemed to just tread water. Now I think we have enough to continue attacking and get some goals to give us a lift.” Over the last five seasons Bucknell is 25-9-1 against Patriot League competition and has qualified for all five Patriot League Tournaments. While winning the Patriot League title and getting back to the NCAA Tournament will always be priority No. 1, Landis is stressing to his team the importance of the non-conference schedule this year perhaps more than ever. “We open with Saint Bonaventure on the road, and that is a game that we really want to win to set the tone for our schedule,” said Landis. “Each one of our 12 non-league games is important. Last season we showed we could compete with Penn State, and games like Penn State and Rutgers are terrific tests for us. I’m not sure that we have given the non-league games enough credit in the past. “Of course we want to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, advance to the final and then lift a trophy at the end. As accomplished as this current group has been, winning a championship is the one thing missing from their resume. I think the way last season ended, losing in overtime on the last day of the regular season to miss out on hosting the tournament, then falling in the last minute to American in the semifinals, is going to be a motivator for us this year. They realize how important hosting the tournament can be, that it is more than just wearing the white jersey, it is getting to play in your own Caitlin Holtz surroundings with your own crowd. We would love to be able to win one at home, especially for this terrific senior class.”

Life After Bucknell

tops in salary potential Bucknell University alumni have the third-highest earning potential among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities, according to the 2010 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer. Bucknell ranks No. 3 in median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges in the company’s annual survey, which launched in 2008. Bucknell ranked No. 1 in the initial 2008 report. In this year’s survey of liberal arts schools, Bucknell graduates had a median starting salary of $55,800, down slightly from $56,100 in 2009 and a median mid-career salary of $115,000, down from $116,000 last year, but still up from $110,000 in 2008. The salary report also ranked Bucknell as 10th among all “top U.S. colleges,” including Ivy League and state universities, for mid-career earning potential.

According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2008, 93 percent of the respondents were either employed or attending graduate school six months after graduation. Of Bucknell’s 897 graduates in that class, 868 (97 percent) responded to the survey. Of that portion of the class, 62 percent were employed, 21 percent were enrolled in graduate school, three percent were both employed and in graduate school part-time, and seven percent were still seeking employment. Of those attending graduate school, 22 percent are pursuing degrees in social sciences and the humanities, 16 percent are in medical school, 16 percent are studying science, 12 percent are in law school and 12 percent are pursuing advanced degrees in engineering. The mean salary for the 2008 graduates responding to the survey was $47,865 and was highest for engineers. The mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in engineering was $55,157, and the mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administration was $53,945. Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences had a mean salary of $41,506. Most 2008 graduates (79 percent) were employed in the Northeast, with Pennsylvania (26 percent), New Jersey (16 percent) and New York City (15 percent) leading the way. Among the most popular employers of Bucknell graduates were firms such as Accenture, AmeriCorps, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, KPMG, Merck & Company, Inc., Peace Corps, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Teach for America, Turner Construction, UBS and U.S. Army. A total of 48 percent of the class respondents secured employment through Bucknell on-campus interviews, Career Development Center leads, networking or offers from former employees.

National Reputation A number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility. • Last year, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers. • Last February, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Bucknell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

The Plan for Bucknell

LISA GIBBONS ’95 was Bucknell’s first true superstar in the sport of women’s soccer, and she holds school and Patriot League scoring records that may never be broken. Women’s soccer became a varsity sport at Bucknell in 1990, and in the program’s second year Gibbons came along and instantly helped the team to a seven-win season and credibility in Eastern soccer circles. She finished her career with a whopping 66 goals, 35 assists and 167 points. No other Bison player has scored more than 100 points or 39 goals since then. Gibbons scored 20 goals in 1993, then as a senior in 1994 she logged 19 goals and 19 assists for 57 points, the third-highest total in the nation that year. Gibbons was a First Team All-Patriot League selection three times, was the league’s rookie of the year in 1991 and the offensive player of the year in 1993. As a senior, she was named to the NSCAA AllMid-Atlantic Region Team and was a Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top athlete in her senior class. Gibbons became the first Bucknell women’s soccer player to be elected to the Hall of Fame, entering with the Class of 2006.

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,400 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confidence in the University. The Plan comprises five strategies: Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www. bucknell.edu/ThePlanforBucknell

the patriot league In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men’s and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.
