Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times, including in the most recent survey in the fall of 2013.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 136 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 254 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 258 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during 2013-14.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program. BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its eighth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 24 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 125 Academic All-Americans in 44 years and 136 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 24 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and the new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Now in his 10th year as head coach at his alma mater, Ben Landis assumed the reins of the Bucknell women’s soccer program in 2005. The Bison enjoyed the most successful six-year span in program history during his first six years at the helm. Over that span, the Bison captured a Patriot League tournament title in 2005 followed by back-to-back regular-season crowns in 2006 and 2007 and runner-up finishes in 2008, 2009 and 2010. With a record of 84-77-10 at the helm of the Orange and Blue (40-23-2 in Patriot League play), Landis helped the Bison surpass the 10-win plateau in each of his first five seasons, marking the first time in program history the squad posted doubledigit wins in at least three consecutive seasons. The Bison have also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament seven of Landis’ nine seasons. In 2011, Landis became the winningest coach in program history. In his first season back at his alma mater in 2005, Landis guided Bucknell to its second Patriot League championship, one of many successes the Bison achieved under his direction that season. The squad more than doubled scoring production from the year before, and went on to face Penn State in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Bison reached new heights, tying school records for wins, both overall (12) and in league play (6), and breaking the team’s previous marks for best goals-against average (0.99), winning percentage (.735) and winning and unbeaten streaks after posting seven consecutive victories. The Bison also earned their first Mid-Atlantic regional rankings from both SoccerBuzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and posted its first win over a nationally ranked opponent, handing No. 14 Navy, which held a 19-0-0 record at the time, a 2-1 loss in the final game of the regular season to clinch a share of the Patriot League regular season title and earn the right to play host to the league tournament as the No. 1 seed. In 2007, Landis coached Bucknell to a 5-1-1 league mark, earning the squad the right to host the Patriot League Tournament as the regular season champion. The Bison, who finished as the tournament-runners up, posted an 11-8-1 overall mark, including a convincing 4-1 win over traditional Ivy League power Princeton. In 2008, Bucknell won 11 more matches and went 5-2 in league play. Landis’ squad broke the school record with eight shutouts and posted a big 3-2 road win over Maryland. He also coached Jennifer Dervarics to her second straight Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honor. In 2009, Landis’ squad went 10-8-1 overall and 5-2 in the league, and for the first time in program history the team earned a point against Penn State with a 0-0 draw in front of a large home crowd. Christa Matlack was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. Injuries played a major role in ending Bucknell’s run of winning seasons in 2010, but the Bison again posted a 5-2 Patriot League record and qualified for the postseason. And for the fifth year in a row Landis coached a major award winner, as Matlack repeated as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and an NSCAA

Leah Sipe, a December 2011 graduate of Messiah College, is in her third year as an assistant on Ben Landis’ staff. Sipe was a four-year member of Messiah’s powerful women’s soccer program, which captured three national championships and made four Final Four appearances during her tenure there. Sipe, who graduated with a degree in sports management, had already gained coaching experience at the club and camp level prior to joining the Bison. She coached at both the Messiah and Penn State women’s soccer camps, and since March has been the U12 girls’ coach for the Penn Legacy club in the Lancaster area. A graduate of Ephrata High School, Sipe was a part of the Eastern Pennsylvania ODP program for four years and went to the regional camp for three years. As a defensive center midfielder at Messiah, she registered 56 career points on 21 goals and 14 assists, and she was a second team all-region selection in 2010. In her four years in college, the Falcons compiled an incredible 96-1-4 record, including national titles in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Sipe has studied or played in Brazil, Ghana and Canada, and she has also played with the Lancaster Inferno of the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

Becky Scroger is the newest member of the Bison coaching staff, having joined the program in the summer of 2014. A former standout goalkeeper at Fredonia State, Scroger came to Bucknell after two years as an assistant coach at Washington & Jefferson, and she works with the Bison keepers in addition to other coaching responsibilities. Scroger graduated magna cum laude from Fredonia State in 2010. She was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the Blue Devils and graduated with school records for career goalsagainst average (1.03), single-season goals-against average (0.67) and career shutouts (230). Scroger was a three-time All-SUNYAC selection, and in 2007 was named to the NSCAA and D3Kicks all-region teams. She was also a threeyear member of the SUNYAC All-Academic Team. She was part of teams that posted winning records all four years, and she was in goal for the program’s first-ever SUNYAC playoff win. Scroger made her collegiate coaching debut at Washington & Jefferson in 2012 and helped lead the Presidents two winning seasons. She also served as an assistant coach with the Washington Victory Express U15 Girls and designed training sessions for U6-U9 girls in the Canon-Mac Youth Soccer program.

As head coach Ben Landis prepares for his 10th season on the Bucknell sideline, he has plenty of foundation on which to build entering the 2014 campaign. After a rare two-year postseason hiatus, the Bison returned to the Patriot League Tournament last season, only to drop an agonizing quarterfinal game in penalty kicks at Colgate. Now nine starters and 18 letterman are back in camp this fall, fueled by that near-miss in Hamilton, and Landis believes his side has what it takes to make that next step forward and play for a championship trophy. “We recognize what we did well and what we did not so well last year,” said Landis, who is the winningest coach in program history. “The upperclassmen have all come back hungry for more, and our freshman class has come in and raised the bar. We have as much depth and talent in the program as we have had several years, and we believe we can be three or more wins better than last year and compete for a bye or a first-round home game in the Patriot League Tournament. At the end of the day, it is all about qualifying for the tournament, playing your way to Sunday and then battling to lift the hardware.” The Bison finished 7-9-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the Patriot League last season, and the only starters lost to graduation were midfielder Liz Dwornik (1 goal, 4 assists) and Third Team All-Patriot League forward Chelsey Garkowski (4 goals, 2 assists). Bucknell returns two other 2013 allconference honorees in Second Team All-Patriot League center midfielder Evelyn Niciński and Third Team defender Courtney Nelson. Nelson will return to her right back position this season and will be in her second year as captain, joining senior goalkeeper Dana Calderone, junior back Lauren Dandie and junior midfielder Devan Schulte in that role. year, Niciński will spend some time away from the team while playing for Poland’s national team. She will miss the team’s exhibition game at James Madison but is expected to be back in time for the Aug. 24 season-opener at Hofstra. Niciński could be away for another match later in the season, but she is not expeted to be absent for any Patriot League games, unlike last season when she was overseas during Bucknell’s double-overtime loss to Army. Fortunately, Landis feels he has plenty of depth to overcome the brief loss of his all-star center mid, and he is especially pleased to have a fortified back line after that position was devastated by injuries last year. “In the back we were thin and injury-prone last year,” said Landis. “We might have overcompensated this year, but that is a good thing. We feel that Courtney Nelson is the best attacking right back in the league, and now we can surround her with all kinds of depth and talent. All four backs that were starting at the end of last year have returned, and then you bring back three more who missed all or most of the year with injuries plus a couple of really promising freshmen. Everyone is pushing each other to be better.” The Bison finished last season with Nelson and then-freshman Montana Paley at the two outside back positions, flanking Dandie and veteran Hannah Bonotto in the center. The NelsonBonotto-Dandie triumvirate has combined for 122 career games and 119 starts, giving the defensive unit a veteran presence. Sophomores Cora Climo, Sam Powers and Kelsey Witt all went down with injuries early last season, and those three along with classmate Paley are all capable of playing in the back or midfield. Toss in another veteran in senior Michaela Berman and promising

newcomers Karli Cirovski and Meghan Holtz, and it appears that Landis’ biggest concern this year will be fitting all the pieces together. “Figuring out the right combinations is going to be a major task during preseason and even into the non-conference portion of the schedule,” said Landis. “We have depth, talent and a lot of different personalities, but we still need to form an identity as a unit. We like to attack out of the back, especially with Courtney. She ran a lot of miles last year, and because we were so thin depth-wise she really had to pick her opportunities. Now even if it means she only plays 70 to 75 minutes, we have capable reserves and she can go all-out. “Hannah is our organizer on the back line. She is strong and solid and has a very strong leg when we need to get a ball cleared out. Lauren

Season Outlook

Devan Schulte is very consistent and works well next to Hannah. She is a calming influence and is also a very technical player. Her first touch is fantastic. Kelsey Witt might be the most improved player we have from the end of last season through the spring. She has turned into one of our best 1v1 defenders and is very vocal with great pace. Montana had a very good freshman season and played a lot of key minutes for us. She has been dealing with some back soreness, but when healthy she is a tremendous athlete who can compete at outside mid and outside back. Sam Powers is back after having knee surgery last October. She had a great summer. She has the technical skills to play anywhere. Her first touch is so soft and she is a great passer from 10 to 40 yards. Cora is also a very good player, which is something we recognized even more after we lost her to injury early last season. She is a selfless player who can play holding center mid, center back or outside back.” Three experienced goalkeepers are battling for playing time behind that large stable of defenders, and they will be mentored by a new goalkeeper coach in Becky Scroger. Senior Dana Calderone walked on to the team midway through her freshman season, and she is so well respected by her teammates that she was elected co-captain this year. Junior Jessie Ashworth started the first 15 games last season, posted a 1.75 goals-against average and won a Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week award. Sophomore Jessica Ratner finished last season as the starter, making 17 saves with only two goals against for a sparkling 0.40 GAA. She had a 110-minute shutout against Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals and earned a PL Rookie of the Week honor late in the year.

“We feel that we have very good depth in goal, and we expect all three keepers to be better with another year’s experience,” said Landis. “We are counting on them to be not only shotstoppers, but also our first attackers once we gain possession of the ball. We need good decisionmaking and vocal leadership. Jessie came back looking great. She worked extremely hard in the weight room this past spring and summer, and it shows. At the end of last season we challenged her to come back and reclaim the No. 1 spot, and she has really taken it to heart. She is quick and fast and brave, and can confidently play off her line. Jessica has good hands and distribution. She had a very good finish to last season, and she has the potential to be terrific. Dana is just a natural leader. She is a huge part of our team’s culture and is so well-respected by coaches and teammates alike.” In the center of the field, the Bison might not have the depth to match the defensive corps, but Landis feels the talent is certainly there. Niciński has developed into one of the best two-way players in the Patriot League. She shared the team lead with four goals and 10 points last season, even though she missed some time while playing for Poland in World Cup qualifying and spent a few games early in the season playing center back. “Evelyn knows what to do and how to do it,” praised Landis. “She is fit, strong and confident, just a real pro.” Juniors Madison Loos and Devan Schulte are both coming off outstanding sophomore seasons in two-way roles positioned in front of the back four. Both are strong defenders and distributors. Freshman Carolyn Casey is also battling for time at central midfield. “Devan is a captain this year and is consistent and dependable,” said Landis. “She plays in the middle of the team and is great at connecting back to front and left to right. Maddy is just flying. She had a fantastic spring and is fit and confident. She has really developed into one of our best players and is just fun to watch. As a center mid, she is figuring out how to play off other players, when to attack and when to protect.” Senior Cassie Denger is the most experienced outside midfielder in the program with 53 games to her credit. She is adept at sending balls in from the right side and has five goals and seven assists in her career. Sophomore Alexis Gannon showed glimpses of her tremendous potential while playing in all 18 games with nine starts last season. Newcomer Jackie Ham is also a natural outside midfielder, and Landis could also move up backs such as Witt and Paley. “We have a number of players who can work box to box, provide us with natural width and deliver balls into the box,” said Landis. “Cassie Denger came back fit and strong. She already had great pace, and it even looks like she has picked up a half-step. She has a great understanding of what we want to do on the front line. Alexis’ place

Courtney Nelson on the team is to be attack-minded. She is a physical presence with her height and strength, and she seems to be much more confident and vocal than a year ago.” Up top the Bison will have to replace Garkowski, their primary target over the last two years. Senior Brigit Falcón, junior Danielle Piccirilli and sophomore Sarah Bresette all have considerable experience and all have scored goals. Sophomore Shannon Donlon has improved rapidly over the last year, and freshmen Kendall Ham and Maddie Mulford have plenty of promise. “We have challenged the forwards to find an identity among themselves,” said Landis. “I don’t know that we have a 10-goal scorer in the group, but there might be 10 players capable of scoring three or four apiece. We are working on interchanging personalties and sustaining an energy that is difficult to defend. “Brigit is healthy this year, and she strikes a heavy ball that is difficult to save and then hold on to. She can play up top or at midfield. Danielle has great feet and is very athletic. She could probably play any sport well. She can be a consistent threat up top and can integrate with any type player. Shannon Donlon is very fit and has worked hard. When she plays simply she is very good. Sarah Bresette has a great personality both on and off the field, which I love. Her first touch running at goal is probably the best on the team, and she plays low to the ground and is tough to knock off the ball.” Last season the Bison finished tied for fifth with American in the Patriot League standings with 13 points (4-4-1 records). Bucknell was the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and played 110 scoreless minutes at No. 3 Colgate before falling 5-4 in penalty kicks. The Bison were picked sixth in the preseason coaches’ poll, behind Boston University, Navy, Colgate, Army and American.

The 2001 Bucknell women’s soccer team defeated American and Navy on its way to winning the Patriot League Championship and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The third-seeded Bison downed the top-seeded Mids 2-1 in overtime to claim its first-ever Patriot League title. Lauren Schwarz scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick 3:07 into overtime. Bucknell fell to seventh-ranked Penn State 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bison finished the season with a 12-7-0 record and were led in scoring by Savannah Rennels, who tallied 12 goals and one assist. She and Lindsay Slomer were named to the All-Patriot League First Team. Tara Utchel landed a spot on the all-league second team, while freshman Ashley Dincher garnered Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year honors. Chrissy Findlay was named Coach of the Year.

In 2005, the Bucknell women’s soccer team upset Lehigh and Army to become the first No. 4 seed in Patriot League history to win the postseason tournament. The Bison downed the Black Knights by a 3-1 margin in the championship game after advancing past No. 1 seed Lehigh in the semifinal round with a thrilling 6-5 decision in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw with the Mountain Hawks. Shannon Curd was named Patriot League Tournament MVP . Bucknell faced Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and fell by the score of 6-0. The Bison ended 2005 with a record of 11-9-1, 4-3-0 in the Patriot League. Jennifer Margolis led the team in scoring with 13 goals and three assists for 29 points. Margolis represented the Orange and Blue on the All-Patriot League First Team while Krista Lee Gentile was named to the all-league second team.

According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2013, 97 percent of the respondents were either employed or attending graduate school six months after graduation. Of Bucknell’s 849 graduates in that class, 841 (99 percent) responded to the survey. Of that portion of the class, 71 percent were employed, 16 percent were enrolled in graduate school, five percent were both employed and in graduate school part-time, and three percent were still seeking employment or awaiting graduate school admission. Of those attending graduate school, 22 percent are in medical school, 15 percent are pursuing degrees in social sciences and the humanities, 13 percent are studying engineering, six percent are in law school, five percent are seeking advanced degrees in science, and the remaining 39 percent are continuing their studies in areas such as business and education. The mean salary for the 2013 graduates responding to the survey was $48,506 and was highest for engineers. The mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in computer engineering was $71,250, and the mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administration/accounting was $55,297. Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences had a mean salary of $41,980. Most 2013 graduates (82 percent) were employed in the Northeast, with Pennsylvania (22 percent), New York City (19 percent) and New Jersey (15 percent) leading the way. Among the most popular employers of Bucknell graduates were firms such as Accenture, AmeriCorps, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, KPMG, Merck & Company, Inc., PricewaterhouseCoopers, Teach for America, Turner Construction, UBS and U.S. Army. Many of the class respondents secured employment through Bucknell on-campus interviews, Career Development Center leads, networking or offers from former employees.

Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 4 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2011 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer. The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated. In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median starting salary of $52,600 and a median mid-career salary of $108,000. The salary report also ranked Bucknell as 14th among all “top U.S. colleges,” including Ivy League and state universities, for mid-career earning potential. Bucknell alumni historically have had high job placement rates in their first year after graduation. Nine months after graduation, for instance, 84 percent of the members of the Class of 2010 were either employed or enrolled in graduate or professional school, according to Bucknell’s Career Development Center. A small percentage opted to travel, volunteer or do a combination of both. National Reputation A number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility. • In 2010, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers. • In February 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Bucknell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

LISA GIBBONS ’95 was Bucknell’s first true superstar in the sport of women’s soccer, and she holds school and Patriot League scoring records that may never be broken. Women’s soccer became a varsity sport at Bucknell in 1990, and in the program’s second year Gibbons came along and instantly helped the team to a seven-win season and credibility in Eastern soccer circles. She finished her career with a whopping 66 goals, 35 assists and 167 points. No other Bison player has scored more than 100 points or 39 goals since then. Gibbons scored 20 goals in 1993, then as a senior in 1994 she logged 19 goals and 19 assists for 57 points, the third-highest total in the nation that year. Gibbons was a First Team All-Patriot League selection three times, was the league’s rookie of the year in 1991 and the offensive player of the year in 1993. As a senior, she was named to the NSCAA AllMid-Atlantic Region Team and was a Christy Mathewson Award winner as the top athlete in her senior class. Gibbons became the first Bucknell women’s soccer player to be elected to the Hall of Fame, entering with the Class of 2006.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support studentathletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life. The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first three years, and much more is planned in 2014-15. Approximately 60 student-athletes particpate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the women’s soccer team in 2014 will be Lauren Dandie, Cassie Denger and Devan Schulte. Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include: • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Help young best athletes become best leaders • Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders • Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders • Practice leading self, their class, and below • Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders • Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff • Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support • Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime

the patriot league The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. The Patriot League began as a successful football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in football, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing and Georgetown in football and women’s rowing. These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Graduation Rates report. The League also had 93 percent of its team score above the national Academic Performance Rate (APR) average in the most recent data, and 92 Patriot League teams earned NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, while more than 15,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 studentathletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholarships.
