Are you full of ideas, but don’t know quite where they belong? Maybe you love watching the ads, better than the programmes? Perhaps, you like posting on social media and dream of creating amazing content? If you are interested in Media, Graphics, Product Design, Visual Communications, Fine Art, English, Creative Writing - then consider Creative Advertising.. It is a fast moving, highly conceptual course with amazing links to London’s leading ad agencies and branding companies. And our students go on to become leading creatives in the advertising, design, digital and social media industries. If you would like what you’ve read - then come along to our ONLINE Concept Workshop - all you’ll need to bring with you is paper and a pen. And a good sense of humour! DANCE

Dance Industry Preparation – a taster of what’s to come In this online workshop, you will have 3 sessions that introduce you to the requirements needed to work in the dance industry. These sessions will provide a taster of what is covered in our dance degree programme should you choose to come and study with us. You will gain knowledge about dance science and some of the concepts that underpin performance optimisation, be introduced to the demands of applying for jobs and auditioning and have a practical session on keeping your body conditioned when working/studying from home. ART FOUNDATION

Wednesday 13th November 2020, 10am - 11:30am Wednesday 2nd December 2020, 10am - 11:30am aims of project: to produce a series of timed drawings which make you think about the potential of different approaches to drawing to make personal, inventive and energetic imagery. materials you should have: as many as the following as possible: marker pen, charcoal stick, eraser, graphite stick or soft pencil, masking tape, some coloured medium (– pencils, felt pens, paint.) 15 – 20 sheets A4 cartridge (removed from sketchbook?) object: before the session look around your house, shed, attic, bedroom cupboard, kitchen drawer etc for 3 smallish interesting objects (3-D) with which you have a particular connection – sentimental, historical, family… It could be a toy, a trinket, part of a musical instrument…you need to be able to comfortably place it on a table in front of you.

NB. You should expect to have your camera turned on at times/throughout the session so that we can review work.

FASHION

Illustration for Fashion, Fashion & Textiles & Costume Design This interactive online workshop will enable you to complete a range of fashion illustrations using different materials and techniques, including collage, pen and watercolours. All work produced in this session can then be included in the students’ portfolios to support their application to university. FASHION PROMOTION

Fashion styling and image making To introduce you to the Fashion Promotion and Communication course here at Bucks this online workshop provides you with the opportunity to explore exciting new trends in fashion styling whilst learning more about how these are communicated. HAIR AND MAKE-UP

Creating Characters We will explore character formation and how we use makeup and hairstyling to enhance the narrative and create the characters we see on stage and screen. You will be shown demonstrations of different techniques to create simple FX looks and then given the chance to try these out working to a given brief. As our taster days are moving to an online platform, we will be sending out some makeup and brushes so that we can still give you a practical element to the session. GRAPHIC DESIGN & ILLUSTRATION 18th November 2020, 10am - 1pm; OR 9th December 2020, 10am - 1pm

Finding Letterforms This online session will begin with an approx. 30-minute lecture on hand drawn letterforms and their application within graphic design and illustration. This will be followed by a step-by-step construction of a typeface of letters based upon a simple grid structure hand drawn by the participants. This will culminate in using their own typefaces to render words/short statements for later potential application to final out comes of their own choosing. Participants will need a pencil, thick ‘Sharpie’ type black pen, ruler, A4 paper (photocopy paper is good), and some thin semi-transparent paper (such as layout paper or tracing paper) approx. 10 sheets of each. INTERIOR & SPATIAL DESIGN Friday 27th November 2020, 10am - 1pm; OR Friday 4th December 2020, 10am - 1pm

A spatial design taster In this workshop participants will have a sample of a spatial designer’s creative process. Through an introductory exercise, participants will unleash their imagination and experiment with scale to design a small installation/exhibition space. In order to prepare for the online workshop, participants should collect a list of basic materials and tools: a small (5-7cm max) object from their house which they find intriguing empty cereal boxes and large paper-tissue boxes old magazines and/or newspapers scissors white glue an A3 paper board white sheets of paper pencil and eraser acrylic paint and paintbrushes (optional) To book a place, please email Katie.Collins@bucks.ac.uk

Introduction to Journalism and News Writing Workshop Ever wondered what a career in journalism might look like? Would you like to learn how to write headline-grabbing copy for print or online? Or present the news on TV or radio? If you’ve answered yes, then our Multimedia Journalism workshop is for you. We’ll need to meet virtually but our course leader Neil Roberts will give you an overview of the different routes into journalism and some anecdotes about his own career in newspapers and television - from meeting a Beatle to sending shorts to an Iraqi dictator! Then learn the differences in writing for TV, radio, print and online - and have a go yourself. We’ll also ask you to step into the mind of a TV presenter and adapt your work for the small screen. Wednesday 25th November 2020: 1pm - 2:30pm Devising From Scratch; 3pm - 4:30pm Improvisation Devising from Scratch: This online workshop will explore how we can create performance from scratch. We will use a range of exercises to look at music, movement and text. We will also look at how we can feed off each other’s ideas to help us perform exciting and creative performance work. Rhythms of Language: performing poetry: By the end of the session you should be able to practice voice warm-up skills independently; Demonstrate awareness of performance poetry as genre: rhyme, rhythm and quatrain and how these relate to theme; Discuss dramatic character in a performance poems & analyse techniques used; Perform extracts from Kate Tempest’s Brand New Ancients Improvisation: Have you ever wondered how to create a character in an instant? What does it take to invent new stories and situations without a script? In this online workshop, you will learn the fundamental skills of improvisation. Making Digital Photograms | Producing Digital Portfolios This 2-hour virtual workshop consists of two sessions – the first will share ideas on collating and presenting a digital portfolio in preparation for university interviews – have a selection of your digital photographs to hand should you wish to experiment with a portfolio layout during the talk. You will then be given a time-based mini-project to go and photograph all you require for this is a phone camera and some small personal objects to hand, before returning to the second online session where you will be guided on how to turn your mini-project photographs into digital photograms, a process which can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. PRODUCT DESIGN

Sketching and Modelling This online workshop will involve students being set a design task, shown how to develop 3D sketches and drawings of their ideas and then make models of their design ideas using card and paper. All students will have sketches and models suitable for them to photograph or to use in their portfolios to illustrate development. They will also have an understanding of the fundamentals of technical drawing that we employ for product design development. MATERIALS REQUIRED Pens & pencils, rulers, set square, protractor, compasses, sketchbooks (A4 minimum), card and cardboard - (various thicknesses), craft knife or scissors. Set Design Concept Workshop Join the course leader for an online creative workshop which explores the concept of set design. You will be given a presentation explaining the aspects of set design you will be taught at Bucks. You will then go on to explore your potential as a budding Art Director/ Production Designer through a practical workshop based on design development and model making, following your initial ideas through to final concept on the theme “Another World’. Materials to Prepare: Tracing paper, pencils, glue, white card, foam board, fabrics, coloured paper/card/paint. (Materials that inspire your design in colour and texture). Research: What inspires you? Gather images of anything that inspires you. Architecture, sculpture, artwork, machinery, geometric shapes, scale, textures, colour, abstract, traditional. TEXTILE DESIGN

Creative Concept Board Workshop Join the Bucks New Uni Textile Design course leader for a creative workshop which explores the importance of concept boards. Beginning with a presentation explaining project concepts, themes, design and methods of communication, as well as examples of Bucks Textiles graduate work, you will learn core concepts of design. This will be followed by a practical workshop where you are invited to create your own concept board in relation to a chosen theme. MATERIALS TO PREPARE You are asked to choose one of the following themes : “Psychedelic” OR “Patterns In Nature”. Please then prepare the following in relation to your chosen theme: Colour tears / magazines tears / printed images / painted colour swatches / materials swatches / yarns / found objects / coloured pens, pencils, paints etc / pritt stick or double sided tape / 1 piece of A2 white paper – keep all of these loose until the workshop!
