Operating Department Practice

In the operating theatre, you need to work as a team, think on your feet and be prepared for anything. At Buckinghamshire New University, we’ll give you the knowledge, practical experience and skills you need to deliver high quality care throughout the patient’s perioperative journey.

LEARN MORE ONLINE BNU UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024 11

Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work autonomously alongside surgeons and anaesthetists within a multidisciplinary team, to care for people when they are at their most vulnerable. Everyone within the surgical environment plays a vital role in making sure procedures go to plan.

ODPs are specialist practitioners within anaesthetics, surgery and recovery. We’ve designed this course to help you put patient safety at the heart of everything you do, show high levels of professionalism and boost your decision-making skills.

We will support your learning in the clinical setting and at university. Our facilities give you the opportunity to perfect your skills in a safe learning environment. The simulation suites on campus look exactly like an operating department to give you confidence in the surroundings. This means you’ll also find a range of industry-standard equipment and realistic high-fidelity manikins that display different symptoms and react to your care.

During your studies, we want to introduce you to a diverse range of views and experiences – this includes bringing in local patients and carers to have discussions and gain a real understanding of the varied needs of our community.

As well as building up your theoretical knowledge and practising techniques on campus, you will also spend time out on clinical placement. We work closely with a number of NHS Trusts in the region to give our students real world experience as part of their course.

Throughout your studies, you will be supported by personal tutors and course leaders, as well as practice visitors. They will help you to develop your confidence, build your knowledge and make informed decisions about practical work.

Upon successful completion of this programme, you’ll be eligible for application to the register with the Health and Care Professions Council, which enables you to practice in the UK.

As well as working in operating theatres as an ODP, there may be opportunities to work in other areas such as Resuscitation teams, ICU, and A&E.

Paramedic Science

Studying Paramedic Science at Buckinghamshire New University will give you the knowledge and competencies to become a highly effective and capable paramedic, in a time when the demand in this profession has never been higher.

LEARN MORE ONLINE BNU UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024 13

Paramedic Science can lead you towards a fulfilling and meaningful role. With Buckinghamshire New University, we’ll help you gain the skills required to become a frontline healthcare professional, making a difference for patients who require urgent emergency care.

Paramedic practice continues to develop, with significant changes seen in recent years leading to paramedics working in a range of clinical settings; providing evidence-based care to patients within our communities.

Throughout your time on the course you will be supported by experienced tutors and lecturers. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete placements in supervised urgent and emergency care settings.

We work with clinical partners like the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and London Ambulance Service NHS Trust to offer you unique learning experiences that will develop your confidence and show you what being a paramedic is really like.

What’s more, because we give our students the opportunity to delve into the practical world of healthcare, you’ll understand exactly how to provide the best support for a broad range of illnesses and injuries in urgent, emergency and unscheduled care settings.

The learning you’ll receive at BNU is special because we combine academic theory, simulated patient care and practicebased experience to make sure you’re fully prepared to step into this incredibly important sector.

Simulation is an important aspect of our paramedic science programme. You’ll have access to our state-of-the-art simulation facilities at both the High Wycombe and Uxbridge Campuses, this includes two fully-equipped simulation ambulances. Students regularly spend time in these areas to practice technical skills and use the newest technologies in a safe and supportive environment.

We use simulation manikins programmed to act like humans, and ‘moulage’ – the process of applying mock, realistic injuries for training purposes. We also engage service users in role-play sessions.

Completing this course will make you eligible to register as a paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and provide you with the firm academic understanding and practical experience you’ll need to excel.
