Buckinghamshire New University has a long history of training people in the healthcare sector and giving them the skills and practice-based experience they need to provide excellent patient care. There is a real demand for nurses and midwives around the country – if you have the compassion, care and courage needed, a degree in these areas will teach you everything you need to know to kickstart your career.

Across our courses, there is a great balance between theory and practice which we think gives you the best, cohesive learning experience. You’ll benefit from highly skilled lecturers and technicians that bring a wealth of clinical expertise in their teaching.

We recognise simulation as an essential part in disseminating the required knowledge, skills and behaviours for student learning, so all of our campuses come with their own state-of-the-art simulation facilities. Within this style of learning, real-time evolving clinical situations can be simulated, repeated and evaluated using reflection and debriefing to ensure you’re prepared for practice.

When it comes to clinical placements, we work with various NHS Trusts, as well as private and independent businesses, to give our students real world experience as part of their course. Not only does this allow you to put learning into practice, but it also ensures you’re highly employable upon graduation.

Throughout your course, you will be supported by personal tutors, course leaders, and practice visitors. They will help you to develop your confidence, build your knowledge and make informed decisions about practical work. Most other universities don’t offer support through practice visitors whilst you’re on clinical placement, but we think it’s vital for you to maintain a close link with us during this time.

Once you complete this course, you’ll be able to join as a Registered Nurse or Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), which enables you to practice in the UK.

NURSING

If you have a passion for delivering care to others and want to make a difference to peoples’ lives, a career in nursing may be a perfect fit for you. No two days within this job are the same – you will need to be able to continuously assess and review mental, physical, behavioural and spiritual needs to identify the priorities and requirements for individualised, evidence-based support.

Nursing offers a huge range of areas you might choose to specialise in, and our courses are a great starting point for whichever career you choose. Whether you want to focus on Adult, Mental Health or Children’s Nursing, our teaching teams have the experience to guide you through your studies.

During your studies, we want to introduce you to a diverse range of views and experiences. We work with external organisations who bring in local patients and carers to share their experiences, help shape our curriculum, and volunteer for simulations to help you consider their perspective when you’re in practice. They might even be on the panel when you come in for an interview to study with us.

Upon completing the course and registering with the NMC, there are a variety of nursing roles that you could go into across the public and private sectors. Many of our students are in employment shortly after graduating, a lot of the time by the trusts, hospitals or homes that they worked with during their time at BNU.

The last three years were the most empowering and challenging of my life so far, and I’ve loved every one of them. I’ve gained a wide range of knowledge through lectures and clinical experiences in a variety of hospitals and other settings.

SARAH

Each birth is a unique experience for mother and baby, but midwifery is about so much more than just delivering babies. It is about the professional care of mothers – before, during, and after the birth of their child; helping to keep them safe and comfortable during this intimate and life-changing experience.

Throughout the course we take a blended learning approach, with on-campus and distance teaching, alongside time out in practice. You will build up your knowledge of the normal physiological processes to facilitate pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period, as well as understanding how to care for those with additional needs and in emergency situations.

When on placement, you will be exposed to a wide range of maternity services, along with access to specialist midwives and services for you to develop your skills in caring for women across the different stages of care.

Upon graduating and registering with the NMC, you will have the opportunity to join teams of midwives that care for women across a variety of areas including labour wards, ward areas and out in the community, whilst providing continuity to those you care for. Some midwives may also choose to become part of the core staff required in hospitals and support the maternity services that way.

Being part of midwifery at BNU is like being part of a family. The tutors are honest, knowledgeable, and have so much valuable experience. As for the other students...they are already the best friends I never knew I needed.
