Welcome to Buckinghamshire New University’s graduation ceremony!
This week we celebrate the achievements of our graduating class of 2024. Congratulations to all our students for what I hope has been a successful and rewarding time at Buckinghamshire New University (BNU).
Graduation is the highlight of BNU’s year and we are delighted to bring together our staff and students, along with their friends and families, to share this joyous occasion. We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements and how they overcame various challenges, including the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
We are very proud that our students are graduating at a time when we are experiencing one of the most successful periods of our history. Our students’ views were integral to BNU being ranked number one in England for student positivity. BNU was also 1 st in the UK for positivity around assessment and feedback for full-time, first degree students. Furthermore, the Research Excellence Framework confirmed that 44% of all research produced by BNU is either internationally excellent or world-leading. In Advance HE’s Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) 2024, BNU ranked 3 rd in the UK for overall satisfaction, 1 st for resources, 1 st for research culture, 1 st for community, 1 st for progression, 1 st for responsibilities, 1 st for support, 2 nd for research skills, 2 nd for supervision and 4 th for professional development.
The University was delighted to be awarded TEF Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023. Judged across 13 features, the TEF panel found that every single feature at BNU was outstanding or very high quality for both student experience and teaching outcomes.
Equality, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of all we do at BNU and we have launched our Being You Inclusivity network within and outside of BNU to create safe spaces, provide mentoring and deliver our Equality Strategy. We have also become a Real Living Wage employer because embedding equality across our organisation is important to us.
At BNU, we have always taken our environmental responsibilities seriously and have a proud track record of making a positive impact on the environment, and within our communities. Last year, we adopted the Nature Positive Pledge; developed plans to decarbonise our buildings and created the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Garden to provide a new well-being, biodiversity and community space for all to enjoy.
This year we were delighted to unveil our first civic and public engagement strategy which reaffirms BNU’s mission to transform lives and help our local communities to thrive. We are acutely aware of the health, social, economic and environmental challenges our campus communities face, particularly in High Wycombe, and our University proudly welcomes the responsibility to help enhance people’s lives in a targeted and impactful way. Working together with our valued stakeholders, we will continue to deliver longlasting and positive change for our region and beyond.
The University also scooped a prestigious and coveted Whatuni Student Choice Award, the leading higher education awards based solely on student choice, in recognition of our work with Bucks Students’ Union to support students during the cost-of-living crisis. The ways we have responded to help our students cope was judged to be the best in the UK. And BNU was also named University of the Year for Student Support in the Daily Mail’s University Guide.
The University’s sound management and financial strength has also enabled a c. £20m investment in the High Wycombe estate and the acquisition of the Brunel Engine Shed in High Wycombe. The latter will house a business incubation centre, a café and an art gallery showcasing the work of our students and local artists.
In the United Kingdom, we know that higher education brings real and life-long benefits and the qualifications our students obtain today are greatly prized throughout the world. Our students have conquered intellectual and practical challenges, and made valuable connections, and we hope too that they have been able to take advantage of the wider programme of experiences that life at BNU has to offer.
Today marks the beginning of the next phase of our students’ lives. On the strength of their qualifications, they may be planning the first step in their chosen career, a career move or progression, or perhaps a significant change of direction. We take great pride in how studying at BNU creates new opportunities and helps our students and graduates to realise their ambitions.
As our students celebrate their successes, I ask them to spare a moment for all those who have helped them along the way. Their friends, family and loved ones, supporters, employers and not least the talented and dedicated staff of the University.
They are now a valued member of the Buckinghamshire New University alumni community.
So, as our students take the next steps in their lives, we ask that they please tell us about their continuing success, come back to meet the next generation of students, share their stories, provide support and inspiration, or return to study with us at a higher level. Whatever their future involvement with the University, each of our students will always receive a very warm welcome and forever be part of our very special BNU family.
Today is our students’ day, and I hope they enjoy all that they have achieved and celebrate their success. Well done to them all!

Proud to be BNU
Our University has been transforming lives for more than 130 years, from developing our students’ full potential to making a positive impact on the environment and in our communities.
We support the local economy through the activity of our students, staff and alumni, with our beneficial impact estimated to be in the region of £0.95bn annually. BNU students work in and support many key local industries, including the vitally important health and social care sector, and are active contributors to local and regional charities and voluntary groups.
We provide an education that works for all regardless of background or circumstance, and equips our students with skills for life, helping them rise to the global challenges of the 21 st century. While at BNU, we aim to give students the best possible experience. Last year’s student responses in the National Student Survey led to us being ranked in the top four among all UK universities for student positivity, averaged across all questions, and for the experience of our postgraduate research students we were ranked 3 rd in the UK.
Our students are the heartbeat of our thriving campuses and we do everything we can to help them. In the past year, their personal efforts led to multiple nominations for our healthcare students at the Student Nursing Times Awards; through our support schemes for talented athletes we supported 28 student-athletes, helping them thrive in their academic studies whilst competing at domestic and global levels; and our annual Art & Design Show showcased to the public and to employers the high calibre of work our talented students produce.

THE DEAL
Curated by the SU, and funded by BNU, the Big Deal provides free access to recreation, sports and skills development sessions, offering our students average monthly savings of £200.
TEF Silver 2023: BNU is proudly rated Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023. Judged across 13 features, the TEF panel found that every single feature at BNU was either very high quality or outstanding.
We funded collaborative projects with Bucks Students’ Union to help our learners cope with the cost-of-living crisis:
12,397 free breakfasts, lunches and dinners were provided to hundreds of students
£973,434 given to students in bursaries, hardship funds, scholorships and BNU Learning Resource Fund
£55k projected savings from catering initiatives for our student community in 2023-24
Fulfilling out commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (DSGs), BNU has continued in its efforts to improve the lives of it’s local communities. Guided by our recently launched Public and Community Engagement Strategy 2023-28, we have launched several initiatives in the past year to help improve the health and wellbeing of our local communities and advance social inclusion. A new weekly Wellness Warriors on the Run social prescribing programme is helping to rehabilitate those facing drug and alcohol addiction, whist ‘one stop shop’ community advice drop in sessions are offering residents the opportunity to receive free welfare, debt, careers advice and much more from local organisations on multiple challenges at the University’s High Wycombe Campus.
The University works with local schools and colleges to help improve attainment, supporting pupils to realise their potential. Over half (51%) of BNU students are first-generation university students; around 50% were members of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities; a third registered with the University’s disability service. In addition, we welcomed students from the Probation Service, Young Carers, service children and care-experienced students.
Building on the University’s pioneering work in creating a nationally important pledge scheme, to improve access to and success in higher education for members of the Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showman and Boater communities, we are proud to have designated special bursaries in support of these goals. We have also created bursaries to support students estranged from their families; care-experienced students; and refugees and asylum seekers, enabling them to benefit from tailored financial, accommodation and pastoral support. While proud of how far we’ve come, we are always striving to increase our positive impact for the benefit of our learners, staff, partners and communities.
