nterior design is constantly evolving. No longer does a homeowner have to stick to traditional or contemporary. Now it is possible to have both with transitional design. This style, according to HGTV, is a marriage of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials, and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless design. Furniture lines are simple yet sophisticated, featuring either straight lines or rounded profiles. Fabric is as diverse as graphic patterns on overstuffed sofas and textured chenilles on sleek wood frames. A minimalist approach is taken

A family-run business for over 40 years, Hendrixson’s Furniture has had design projects all over the country. Featuring its own team of designers, the company offers services for lighting, color and fabric selection, area rugs and fine carpeting, delivery, furniture repair, and furniture customization. Interior Design Consultant Linda Notoris of the design team recently worked on the transformation of a 1960s era split level home using transitional design. “My clients were a couple who had been customers of Hendrixson’s Furniture for quite a long time before I began working with them. They owned an iconic Bucks County style farmhouse that they had decorated very traditionally, with Chippendale and Hepplewhite style furniture throughout, Persian rugs, and brass light fixtures. It was very beautifully done and very appropriate to the setting in which they lived. When they came to me, however, they had decided to move back into one of their childhood family homes, a 1960s era split level located in Warrington. Furthermore,

they had decided to make substantial architectural renovations that would improve the flow of the home and create a better atmosphere for entertaining. They had a strong desire to create a very different aes-

thetic for their new home, emphasizing a more current design and color scheme, and introducing a more open flow of light and space. In this, she was greatly inspired by her love of both Eastern design elements Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2014

and design philosophy,” Notoris says. ccording to Notoris, the clients wanted to strongly emphasize the presence of light throughout the house. To that end, they used a lighting architect who created a plan that would enhance the position of windows and recessed lighting, obviating the necessity of floor and table lighting. In order to emphasize this presence of light, Notoris worked with Hendrixson’s Furniture’s Window Treatment Specialist Peggy Williams to create window treatment options that allowed for both the presence of strong natural light as well as privacy. “For instance, in the bedroom, Peggy designed a shade that consists of panels of raw linen having a tactile quality that appears much like the rice paper of Shoji screens, a soft, natural, quality that also res-

onates with the Asiatic feel of much of the room. She then carried these panels through to the adjacent bathroom. Elsewhere, we used top-down bottom up shades that allow light to come through from the upper section of the windows, while providing privacy below. The exception to this approach was in the rooms for guests, grandchildren, and meditation, where we opted for blackout shades which allow for greater control of the range of lighting,” Notoris says. The primary concern, according to Notoris, was enhancing the soft lighting that flowed throughout the house. “The walls were painted with soft beiges. The color options emphasized the feel they wished to dedicate to each space. In the pool house, which featured seating by Stressless, the upholstery materials were ice blues and creams. They used three Stressless Paradise sofas, two high back and Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2014

one low back, surrounding a storage ottoman and two Spirit chairs. They used transitional Keno Brothers side pieces from Theodore Alexander, beside these sofas, including the Tall Fine Point II table with its slender cabriole legs. They used a contemporary pool table, which has an interchangeable surface and adjustable height that allows it to double as a dining table. The full kitchen area includes a stone topped counter with a feature that illuminates its translucent surface. The interior features two wide screen televisions for simultaneous sports viewing, as well as one before the exterior deck seating area,” Notoris says. “They sought the same open atmosphere in the public areas of their primary residence, where the formal dining room is only subtly separated from the kitchen by a curving, glass topped island. Throughout, a strong emphasis is placed upon displaying a broad spectrum of natural wood tones. The curves of the dividing island, which pick up

And, people want to be able to experience their garden,” Dear says. Bill Dear discussed a Upper Bucks County farm that has been a collaborative work in progress. “As restoration work on the house was completed, attention was turned towards the design of gardens to surround the home. Walkway, terrace, and a parking area were installed to provide access to the home and outbuildings, as

well as to create outdoor spaces for entertaining, and dining, as well as for private reflection. Reclaimed hardscaping materials were used in order to carry the age and character of the home into the landscape and were utilized in such a way as to create the appearance that time had worn away the newness of the garden and to reinforce the feeling of an old farm.” “Once the hardscaping was in place, plantings to define spaces while providing color and interest throughout the year became the focus. While creating a planting scheme for a property with so many opportunities and character may appear simple, this site was not without its challenges. The property is surrounded by acres of open woods with streams and ponds all combining to create the perfect habit for deer, and to cap it off, walnuts, with their ability to prevent other plants from surviving, are the predominant tree on the property,” Dear continues. “A lighting scheme was designed and installed to add another dimension to the garden, while providing safety and improving security. Lights were placed under the trees in order to highlight the sculptural qualities of their branching patterns or along the walk and by steps in order to provide safe passage,” Dear says. “The gardens have evolved and expanded as the various outbuildings, continued on page 77

Willis Buck Walter, Head of Garden Design at Walter’s Nursery, Inc., finds that new trends in landscaping often come from the The Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in London. “I like to attend the show every couple of years. You see such spectacular additions to the plant world from growers around the globe. They are the trendsetters with garden design. You see things in England three or four years before they come to the United States. We adapt them for use in this part of the country,” Walter says. Walter cited some interesting trends that he terms Modern English. One is introducing edible plants and fruits into an ornamental garden. “It is very rewarding to have applies, pears, currants, even raspberries in your garden. They can be used ornamentally, and also be a source of food for your own table.

You can mix them in with other plantings without having a separate orchard or vegetable garden,” Walter says. Another smart idea is the boxwood cloud hedge. “Various sized boxwoods are placed tightly together and pruned into a cloud shape. It creates the look of a very old boxwood hedge that has been pruned and shaped over the years,” Walter notes. Yet another trend is extending the season of your garden as much as possible. “When extending the season of a garden, it is important to pick a color palette. Then you can narrow down your plantings. Camellia Yuletide is a red flower that blooms from November through January. Hamamelis Arnold Promise is a bright yellow plant. It starts to bloom in February and goes through March. Angelina blooms from May through November. Geranium Johnson’s Blue are still blooming the garden even after the frost. And Japanese Anemone will bloom through the late summer through the first heavy frost,” Walter says. Lastly, is the idea of using a meadowy mix to create a perennial flower border. Annuals and perennials are mixed so that there is continuous color from season to season. With trends, Walter notes, you need to create balance. continued on page 77

Inc. (PLS) recently completed a comprehensive landscape project for a family in Blue Bell. “This was a brick center hall colonial is a single family type house neighborhood. The client wanted an outdoor living space in the backyard and the front walk needed some interest with color to match the brick facade. In the front, we renovated it with a new walkway with concrete pavers. We also redid the driveway with the same concrete pavers. We worked around the mature plantings and added some new, including a low evergreen groundcover type shrub called Sarcococca. It takes a few years to mature and grows twelve to eighteen inches. It is also deer resistant. In the backyard, we built a deck onto the house, with steps that lead down to a nice patio space and seating walls. This then leads out to a play area for the children. Three-Floor Build emmi Construction Inc. spent a year and a half working on a center hall colonial for a family in Buckingham. “This was an extensive undertaking. First we took one of the second-floor bedrooms and converted it into the master bedroom closet. Second we installed a staircase to get to the attic. We put a shed dormer on the home complete with a solar type system. Next the attic became the third floor. We created two additional bedrooms with their own bathrooms, as well as a media room, complete with a dance floor and stage. Once we finished the third floor, it was time to move down to the first floor and expand the kitchen,” says Owner/President John Gemmi. “We took an average size kitchen and doubled it. It is 24 feet by 24 feet. It has two massive islands that can sit eight to 10 people around each island. All of the cabinetry was hand built in a local cabinet shop. Everything was custom to the client’s taste—the marble countertops, sapele mahogany islands, white painted perimeter cabinetry, even the hood over the stove. We reproduced the hood from a photo the client gave us. It weighs over

200 pounds. Since there was so much cabinetry and not much wall space, we used a lighting control system that can be operated from tablet or cell phone,” Gemmi says. The kitchen, which was designed for a large family who enjoys entertaining, also has a Wolf stove, wet bar with TV, shell mosaic tile backsplash, random width red oak flooring, arched details, and two Sub-Zeros–one the freezer, one the refrigerator. There also is an icemaker, a beverage center, a refrigerator drawer for the kids, warming drawing, and two dishwashers, one a drawer type. “Most of the items are hidden with cabinetry. growing family needed more space, but had a limited budget. They were in search of some family room space, a first-floor bathroom, and a screened porch. Natural Subdivision ward-winning luxury homebuilder Richard Zaveta is in the production phase of a new residential community in Solebury Township with seven new building lots on 66 acres. Each building lot will range from six to 14 acres. “We worked diligently to keep within the natural confines of hedges, streams, and topography. Each of the lots is skillfully placed amongst this natural topography. It will give a limited disturbance presence to this entire site,” says President Richard Zaveta of Zaveta Custom Homes. Named Winding Creek, the site has magnificent Paunacussing Creek frontage winding through the rear of the property. “We have integrated attractive new methodologies, such as extensive natural meadow grass configurations. These aesthetically pleasing meadows will be used for purification of runoff water and groundwater recharge. Farmers have used meadows for years in maintaining difficult areas of their fields. We are drawing on that overall technology and embellishing on it, Zaveta says. “We also are doing extensive reforestation and planting of trees. We worked diligently with a landscape architect, as well as planning commissions and supervisors, to create natural hedgerows and natural groupings of trees,” Zaveta adds. Building on Winding Creek will begin in the spring. According to

Zaveta, the current trend in home building is 4,000- to 5,000-square-foot homes that are architecturally refined, of superior quality, and specifically tailored for homeowners. Many of these clients have gone through the starter home, and the epically dramatic home, and now are looking for a home to spend the balance of their days in. “Our home styles range from the traditional Bucks County colonial through more of a European influenced cottage style architecture. We try to have a mix of styles so that the homes play off of each other, yet are individual,” Zaveta says. Estate Library hen a Jamison family came to Sullivan Building & Design Group, they wanted to convert their static white-walled home office into a warm estate library. The room did not fit in with the new construction home. According to Project Manager Molly Hanisch, the client wanted to have functionality in this book matched, figured mahogany clad library, but all of the modern necessities had to be hidden. “All of the lower drawers hold file folders. One of the cabinets pulls out and there is a paper shredder. Beneath the desk is a drawer. When this is pulled out, there is a printer and the computer’s hard drive. All of the cords are hidden. The only thing on the desk is a computer screen,” Hanisch says. Special features of the library include a large cabinet above the desk, flanking bookshelves, a built-in window seat with shallow storage beneath, fluted pilasters, and heavy crown molding. Expansion Trio .R. Maxwell Builders, Inc. recently helped a Doylestown Township family undertake a substantial project in their home. “We expanded three areas of the house. There was a kitchen addition, where we doubled its size. There was a kids’ bedroom addition on the second floor. And we did a covered porch out the back of the home,” says James Maxwell. According to James Maxwell, this project was done in two phases–the kitchen and kids’ bedroom, followed by the patio. “When we were framing the kids’ bedroom, we took the vaulted ceiling area and created a loft. We have a full-service cabinet shop, Mink Run Millwork, so we were able to make some built-ins to fit some of the nooks. We made a built-in ladder that got the kids up to the space,” Maxwell says. “The larger kitchen was reworked to be fully automated. There is a computer station centrally located in it. There are stateof-the-art appliances, multi-functional sinks, all of the latest and greatest gadgets. A large eating island was installed for

family dining. The kitchen also has granite countertops, tile backsplashes, and black walnut flooring, which we expanded through most of the first floor,” Maxwell adds. “The patio is as impressive as the kitchen. It is directly connected to the kitchen and completely under cover. There is an exterior fireplace, bar with a large stone top, and a built-in grill surrounded by stone. Jim Lukens When Quakertown artist Jim Lukens paints a landscape, he begins way off the canvas and then zooms in, filling it with views that resonate with local memory • by Bob Waite

uakertown artist Jim Lukens says, “I’ve never ever wanted to be anything other than a local landscape painter.” And that is what he is, but not an ordinary one. His art resonates with Bucks Countians because his paintings are carefully crafted to create an emotional response based on local memory. “People say things like, ‘I remember driving down that road on a Sunday morning.’ Jim began painting in the second grade. “My grandfather was a carpenter and he painted. He left me Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2014

his paints and brushes and stuff like that. I was in sixth grade when he passed away. I had been oil painting my whole life.” He remembers that he took art lessons as a child. “When I was growing up I was always begging for art lessons. I had a natural ability.” People noticed his natural ability and friends and family said the kind of things that helped reinforce his early identity as a painter. Yet when Jim graduated from Central Bucks East in 1977, he didn’t know what he was going to do. Art seemed a less likely choice than other ways of making a living, so Jim went to Bucks County Community College as a business student. He finished with a degree and a real estate license and thought he may prepare to go to law school.

But he paused. “I just couldn’t imagine my life going that way,” he says. “Really!” So not too long after high school and Bucks County Community College, Jim was living in New Hope and someone suggested that he apply at the Philadelphia Academy of Arts. Jim had no idea how he would pay for it, but he got together a portfolio and brought it to the interview for this prestigious institution. The Academy gave Jim a full scholarship. While at the Academy, Jim worked nights in the Rittenhouse Hotel as a waiter and lived at 20th and Walnut Street. Life was exciting and Jim was soaking up his art education. After the completion of his third year at art school, Jim was offered an opportunity to come to Palm Springs, California

to sell his art. A couple who Jim waited on at the Rittenhouse Hotel owned a gallery and liked Jim’s paintings and invited him to paint and sell art at their gallery. “I sold everything I had and bought a one-way ticket to Palm Springs.” he gallery featured a jeweler, an abstract painter, and Jim was the Impressionist painter. People knew he was from the East Coast because of his colors. “Out there everything is bright and vibrant because there is not so much water in the air.” While in Palm Springs, Jim would sell his paintings at art festivals. “We would go to shows and go from town to town just doing the art festival route. The gallery was on the main drag in Palm Springs. On Thursday nights there was a street fair and you could sell

your stuff out there. You couldn’t sell anything you didn’t make—all homemade stuff. I took paintings out of the gallery and would sell them.” But it wasn’t the kind of thing Jim enjoyed, so he came back to Bucks County and got a job on his sister and brother-in-law’s farm near Springtown. On the farm Jim had a studio and he continued to paint. He eventually reconnected with a friend who once worked with him at Jenny’s Restaurant. The friend now had a gallery, the Michelyn Galleries in Doylestown, where Jim began to exhibit his work. When the gallery became The Chapman Gallery, he stayed and still sells his art there. He has been at the gallery for 25 years. Now living in Quakertown, Jim paints Bucks County Home & Garden Guide 2014

his distinctive paintings using techniques he has acquired throughout his life. One of the remarkable things about Jim Lukens’ paintings is the sense of depth. Jim says that artist and gallery owner Trisha Vergis said of one of his paintings, “Boy, I feel like I can just walk right into that.” The sense of three-dimensionality can come from the several glazes he sometimes puts on his finished paintings, but it also comes from a perspective that Jim learned from an art instructor at the Academy. “When I paint I … this is something I remember one of the instructors from the Academy told me, ‘Start from the farthest point out.’ The clouds in the sky? ‘No,’ he says. ‘Look further … to the other side of the universe.’ So you start beyond the painting, then you are coming into the earth, then the atmosphere, then the clouds, then the furthest mountain or horizon, then middle ground, then foreground. Think way, way, way beyond where you are going to start and then bring it up forward.” Jim’s palate reflects the colors found in rural Bucks County. “There’s a yellow ochre which is like a gold color. I mix it in with every one of the colors because it takes a bright blue and kind of mutes it down a little. Also I love the soil here in Bucks County. I think the basis of a painting is the red underneath the grass. What a beautiful growing area we have. As opposed to having something that is very bright, I like more muted earth tones.” Jim is also a firm believer in using red in all his paintings. Red makes greens look greener and adds a certain vibrancy that

works with the earth tones, making his paintings sometimes seem very luminous. “I’m getting a little bolder with color—getting out of my comfort zone.” You can see this boldness in his paintings of the Moland House, a building with a lot of blue on the door and shutters in Springtown, a painting of a summer garden and other landscape paintings such as one on his Website of the creek by Carversville Road. im displays a refreshing humility when he talks about his art. He says,” I knew from a young age that there were going to be better artists than me and that there would be worse artists than me. I always knew where I fit into the big scheme of things.” He realizes that local artists have their niches, their own strengths and weaknesses. Pricing for example can be too high, overvaluing the work and keeping it from those who would enjoy it or too low, which in turn would undervalue the work and hurt the artist. “I want to be affordable,” Jim says. “I don’t want to price myself out of the market. I want to keep them flowing. I want people to be able to afford my paintings and enjoy them. Price wise, I am in the middle of artists with same amount of experience and talent (I hate to put it that way). The garden has to be easily maintained and you need time to enjoy it. Walter’s Nursery, Inc. recently worked on a Victorian style garden in Point Pleasant, PA. “This is very much a gardener’s garden. It has three or four different zones and light conditions within it. 65 feet by 25 feet wide, this garden is hedged in on one side with a 100year-old Rose of Sharon hedge. It has a picket fence that goes all the way down the one long edge that is lined with apple trees pruned in the old european art of espalier. We used varieties of McIntosh, Fuji, Gala, Red Delicious, and Yellow Delicious. This long rectangular garden is edged in with a pea gravel path and a bluestone path, as well as a pea gravel patio area for dining. There is a large rectangular grass lawn that is perfectly flat. It can double as a larger dining area for large events. A topiary boxwood mimics the architecture of the house with the steep gables on the roof. Mature hemlock and pine trees create a canopy over the garden, which creates an intimate garden room,” Walter says.
