Having awards from the Philadelphia Sketch Club’s juried exhibitions of Works on Paper, painter Meg Constable takes heed of the advice of her professor and keeps drawing and painting
By Michele Malinchak
The oversized canvas takes up a good portion of her studio as Meg Constable sits on a stool talking about her latest work in progress. Larger than life, the portrait of a man’s face with haunting eyes stares back at you.
“I was going through a dry spell with
no painting ideas, when I started looking at old photos online. His came up and I knew I had to paint him, though I never thought I’d be painting a convict,” she said.
The original 1902 black and white mug shot was taken in North Shields,
England and the accused, named Alfred, holds a placard. “I think he stole some chickens,” she said. Pictured here wearing a soulful expression, he appears contrite and more personable in her version of him. “I wonder what he’d think if he knew his portrait was being painted here in 2024,” she laughed.
It’s always the eyes of her subjects that intrigue her. “I really like direct eye contact,” she said, “It feels like they’re still there.”
Meg defines her style as slightly abstracted realism and seeks to simplify shapes. Diving right into her work, she draws her subject directly onto the canvas with no preliminary sketching. First she’ll make a mark on the canvas for the head, then brush in the rest of the face using paint thinned in turpentine. Multiple thin layers of paint and glazes are applied to
achieve her end result.
Her palette is limited, consisting of Payne’s grey, vermillion, yellow ochre, raw sienna, burnt sienna, raw umber, burnt umber, Italian green umber and some white. As for brushes, she never buys expensive ones because, “I kill them,” she said. She goes through large brushes quickly and buys them at the hardware store, but also paints with extra-long filberts.
In addition, Meg works in clay and has sculpted the heads of her three children, among other subjects. “I have about 20 clay heads sitting on a shelf in my dining room,” she said.
She also enjoys painting plein air and her landscapes of Sheard’s Mill Covered Bridge were done on site. Using expressive brush strokes, the warm reds of the bridge are reflected in the cool blue-gray
waters of Tohickon Creek.
Her favorite spot to paint, however, is her studio. She has been artist in residence at 7th Street Studios in Perkasie, PA for four years where, almost every Sunday, she draws and paints from live models. She is also a regular at the life drawing sessions held at the home of artists George and Emily Thompson.
Meg's drawings have won several awards at Philadelphia Sketch Club’s juried exhibitions of Works on Paper. She was also in their 158th Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings in 2022.
Meg later attended Tyler School of Art and graduated in 1995 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. Her experience there was rewarding and said, “I definitely give Tyler two thumbs up.”
At Tyler she took figure drawing from professors Stanley Whitney and Susan Moore, who were both influential in her art career. “It was amazing there,” she said. “We could bring large rolls of paper, tack them to the wall and work on full sized life drawings.”
She kept in touch with Susan Moore after she graduated and when Meg was about to marry and move to the suburbs, Susan emphatically told her: “DON’T STOP DRAWING!”
Meg has taken her advice to heart throughout the years. “I tried painting as much as I could (sometimes with my kids), and took a bunch of workshops. It was like playing hooky,” she said. “And life drawing sessions everywhere I could…in Philly, Norristown…I finally started to enter work in exhibitions in
2017.”
But it wasn’t until the pandemic and lockdown that she began painting fulltime, inspired by the work of old masters online. “Just looking at their work and thinking about paint and color and form—it was so amazing just to sit and study,” she said. These include works by Diego Velasquez, Antonio Mancini, Ilya Repin, Joaquín Sorolla, Ferdinand Hodler and Andrew Zorn. The turn-ofthe-century Russian faces Meg has depicted are particularly contemplative and soulful.
Always on the lookout for new subjects, she has even painted some of the kitchen staff at the inn. “Now others want theirs done next,” she said. She also does commissioned work which challenges her but still brings enjoyment.
Taryn Day, artist and owner of 7th Street Studios, said of Meg's work, “I love the way she works in an all-or-nothing way, diving in to work with her full attention and then leaving it in a state of discovery.”
In many ways she’s still that girl in the barn having fun with her dad’s brushes and a few cans of paint. Though her current subjects are more complex as her skills have advanced, painting has and always will be her happy place.
Meg’s paintings can be viewed on her website: megconstable.com and at 7th Street Studios in Perkasie. She is also on Instagram @megconstable_studio.

Living in a hunting cabin on their Upper Black Eddy property, Scott and Kat hired Daryl Rost to build them a house that has the feel of a barn with an unrefined, almost industrial edge

Above, the exterior of the residence, finished with Boral, a by-product of coal, which is made of compressed ash. Right, sitting atop a glacial rock on the property is part of an old motorcycle frame spray painted copper.
Sweeping open spaces, filled with raw metals and wood, set the tone for this contemporary barn-style residence. A striking expanse of living space, defined with all natural materials, is a modern barn-style home, designed and built by Daryl Rost and Rost Artisan Design Build. Rustically appointed, the interior is edgy and unrefined, with an industrial feel.
Daryl and his team were commissioned by the
THIS 14-MONTH PROJECT BEGAN IN DECEMBER OF 2019 AND WAS BUILT WHILE SCOTT AND KAT REMAINED IN THEIR HUNTING CABIN
owners, Scott and Kat, to build their new home. They lived on the property for years, in an old hunting cabin originally built in the 1940s. Outgrowing the cabin, they knew they wanted to stay in Bucks County and decided to have a new home built on the property in Upper Black Eddy. After investing in a kit from Cedar Creek Homes, they hired a contractor to build their home. The project with this contractor did not succeed. The plans included in the kit were out of scale and the contractor did not really grasp the implementation of the materials. Then Scott and Kat hired Daryl Rost. A project of this
character was actually what Daryl enjoys more than traditional design. He explains that the kit provided the timber and raw wood to build the structure’s framework.
“From there it is left to the vision and artisanry of the builder to create the space,” says Daryl. The challenge of orchestrating a non-traditional design is a project Daryl welcomes.
This 14-month project began in December of 2019 and was built while Scott and Kat remained in their hunting cabin on the property. In the first phase, the team used the kit of timber and wood to create the house’s framework.
Above, a cozy dining area sits at one end of the kitchen space. Table and chairs blend nicely with the black features used to appoint the kitchen space. A metal chandelier illuminates this setting. One set of sliding glass doors offer outside access. Opposite, beyond the raw timber frame is access to the bridge and loft level from the custom floating staircase. Designed and built with wood and steel, this feature adds that modern industrial element to the space.
The landscape of the property was their first challenge since it was scattered with huge glacial rocks and glacial deposits. In order to create the framework, they brought in a heavy excavator to prepare the landscape for the foundation and framework. With the excavation completed they installed the framework with some additional materials and modifications in the infrastructure. One change was in the ceiling height of the second floor. “We raised the ceiling by adding four feet to the space,” says Daryl. Once they assembled the frame the next phase was to work on the infrastructure, adding plumbing and electricity. The concept of this project was to lay the framework and then add the custom finishes to the raw materials and define the living space.
In collaboration with Scott and Kim, the design of the living space was established and strategized. Daryl envisioned and implemented this project, with his team, to meet the needs and wishes of the owners. “Scott and Kat wanted an open footprint, with vaulted ceilings and a loft,” adds Daryl. This home’s interior is a masterful balance of dark and light, refined and raw. “The goal was to create the feel of an old barn, while appointing the interior with a modern twist,” Daryl explains. A balance is created with the selection of materials, use of the space and choice of color palette. Using old, reclaimed wood to capture the essence of traditional Bucks County structures, these materials created a rustic effect. For the twist, they infused the interior with an
Opposite, a central feature to the living space is the custom floor-to-ceiling dual gas fireplace, constructed with raw steel panels, designed with a variety of sized and shaped steel panels. Flanked by the light wood walls and sets of sliding glass doors and oversized windows, the interior is bathed with natural light. Above, at the far end of the loft level is a chill out space to relax or watch TV. On a ledge above the TV wall perches one of the owner’s motorcycles, as an art element.
Above, off the bedroom is the bathroom designed with the same theme of wood and steel. The custom vanity has a walnut live edge top and a simple steel pedestal base atop a ceramic tile floor. Bottom right, a tiny first-floor powder room is designed that has a vanity with a reclaimed wood base to hold the steel and concrete counter top and sink.Opposite floor-to-ceiling wood accents embrace the primary bedroom that is bathed in natural light from the oversized windows. Appointed with a woodsy feel, this space is awash in dark and light woods. Even the base of the bed is wood, created by Daryl with natural timbers to blend in with the room’s woodsy persona.
industrial composition by introducing metals into the mix.
Along with the blueprint and installation of all the architectural elements, the selection of the materials was essential to accomplish the desired look and feel. Daryl prefers using natural materials in his projects. With this build, using all-natural wood, metals and tile was paramount to the authenticity of the design. For the exterior, which is a dark purple shade, like eggplant, Daryl used Boral, a byproduct of coal, which is actually compressed ash. “This material is maintenance-free,” Daryl adds. He uses Boral because it is hardy and keeps its color and finish.” All trim was finished in black to show the difference in tones. From the outside it is impossible to imagine what is inside this structure.
Interior features begin with the exposed timber ceiling to define its barnlike feel. All the exterior-positioned walls are pine. “Some of this raw lumber was green and moldy,” Daryl adds. He describes how they bought 150 gallons of bleach to clean the wood and then treat it to establish some similarity in the finish of beams. “Wood should be treated before the installation so that it does not warp or twist,” Daryl adds. In contrast to the texture of the walls, the weight-bearing beams are all rough-cut timber, adding to the rustic appeal. Most of the floors are reclaimed white oak from old timbers. Daryl shares his decision to use reclaimed wood, explaining that the trees took 80 to 100 years to grow, giving the wood more character than other materials. “We painted all the interior walls a very dark grey to
create negative space,” Daryl explains, “to showcase the wood used throughout the framework.” He explains that as your eye moves across the expanse, the focus is on all the light-toned natural wood.
In an open space design, with the loftiness of the interior, there were several architectural elements that required precision fits and installation. A necessary tool during the building process was the use of 3D. A benefit of using 3D is to visualize how a room will look, or a custom element will fit, before actually producing and installing. “The value of using 3D is that we can start putting together the design so that the clients can see it,” Daryl explains. Additionally, many of the design elements had to be checked for fit before installation, like the floating staircase, the fireplace and the stained-glass window. Through 3D visualization they mapped out the layout of the open space, making sure everything would fall into place. One process that Daryl implements is building the architectural elements in his shop and then installing on-site.
First floor living space is designed with expanse and airiness. This openspace concept on the first floor includes a kitchen with a center island and eating area, a living room, primary bedroom and bath, a powder room and mudroom. Accenting and defining the open floor plan is a bridge or loft above the first floor, with railings of modern industrial stainless steel and raw steel constructed in their off-site machine shop. Access to the loft level is by ascending the custom floating staircase that Daryl designed and built. This staircase, made of steel, adds
that modern industrial element to the space. Daryl points out that he conceptualized the staircase in his shop with 3D. “I knew this installation was going to be tight,” Daryl explains, “and I did not want to lose space in the bedroom closet.” By implementing the 3D visualization, they were able to build the staircase in the shop and install it, without a hitch.
In the kitchen, designed by Jill Updike, the head designer of Niece Lumber, in Lumberville, the dominant color is black. To enhance the interplay of dark and light between the wall shade and the light-toned wood, most of the cabinetry, counter tops, and tabletop are black. Cabinetry is done in a distressed style and the counter tops and center island are absolute black granite. In keeping with the black motif, all the appliances, from Blue Star Appliances in Lancaster, are also black. For a pop of color, Daryl designed a backsplash with copper tiles, 42” by 20”, made in his shop. An interesting patina affect was created in the copper by mounting the tiles on wood and heating them. Once the backsplash was completed, Daryl finished this wall with a custom black oven hood. For lighting, Daryl installed electricity through a black pipe to hang the purple-toned light fixtures over the center island.
Daryl’s skill as an artisan continues to be showcased in the living room. The floorto-ceiling dual gas fireplace, constructed with raw steel panels, was a project he conceptualized, built and installed. “I designed this in 3D to work out the options I had to piece it all together,” Daryl adds. Like putting pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together, Daryl fit a variety of sized and shaped steel
panels together to build this floor-to-ceiling chimney effect. He wanted it to look like it extended to the roof. The fireplace added a modern industrial appeal to the space, as well as a focal point of conversation. Another conversation piece in the living room area is the cocktail table sitting in front of the gas fireplace, also designed and built by Daryl. “I bought a slab of black walnut at Haycock Lumber in Plumsteadville,” he says, “and Scott fell in love with it.” Daryl made this 750-pound table, first in 3D, with a steel base for support. The table just fits into the space, continuing to infuse the living space with the natural balance of materials.
Illuminating all the wood and steel throughout the living space is the natural light streaming in through the set of four sliding doors to the outside and the many upper and lower oversized windows, all framed in black. In the living room space, there is a continuation of that play with dark and light, finished and raw, and light wood against the charcoal grey walls. Extending beyond the living room area, and behind the black Yamaha piano, the primary bedroom is tucked in the corner. Appointed with wood floors and a wood backdrop, this space is bathed in natural light coming from the oversized windows. Appointed with a woodsy feel, from floor-to-ceiling, the bedroom is awash in dark and light woods. Even the base of the bed is wood, created by Daryl Rost with natural timbers to blend in with the room’s woodsy persona. The bathroom has been designed with the same theme of wood and steel. The custom vanity has a walnut live edge top and a simple steel pedestal base.
Custom pieces continue on the loft level where several artistic additions were created to add interest and dimension to the space. In one corner, above the primary bedroom, is a home office. Accenting an exterior office wall along the bridge walkway, is a custom stained-glass window. Daryl collected a variety of antique stainedglass windows from Architectural Antiques in Bedminster. With the use of 3D, he puzzled the five windows together to create one large stained glass window that was inserted into the center of the wall. “I created an art piece to accent the space and let some light in,” Daryl adds. At the other end of the bridge is a chill out space to relax or watch TV. On a ledge above the TV wall sits another conversation piece, one of the owner’s motorcycles, adding a touch of the
unexpected. The unexpected is quite frankly what lies behind the front entrance to this modern barn-style home. Scott and Kim were finally able to move into their new home in January of 2021. Seeing the end result, after months of envisioning, collaborating and anticipating, was a gratifying experience for Daryl, his team and Scott and Kim.
Built with a seamless mix of wood and metal, Daryl and his team flawlessly filled this home with a character all its own. Rustic, with an edge, and a balance of dark and light these elements bring this living space to life.v

Backyard Eats can plan, plant and tend a vegetable garden that becomes part of your landscape, and you can eat delicious, fresh and healthy far m-to-table food everyday.
BY CHRYSA SMITH
Farm-to-Table—getting food from the farm to you, as quickly, closely and freshly as possible not only elevates taste—it elevates health. And even better is if that farm happens to sit in your own backyard. What fresher, better-tasting abundance can compete? Experienced gardeners have long known the joy and benefits that come from harvesting their own produce but that takes research and experimentation. You need to know what you can grow and where. Water, sun, and planting requirements. How to protect from pests and solve problems when they present themselves.
Enter Backyard Eats. They’re in the business of eliminating all the guesswork and physical demands that come with managing a healthy, high-yield garden. They’ll plan a garden for you, set it up for its maximum condition and output, tend it and more. According to Mike Bennett, president, operations manager, and lover of all things environmentally friendly and organic, “Our purpose is to be a key driver in this
greater movement.” Mike couldn’t reiterate enough how much they wanted to share the magic of home-grown food. And here’s how it all began.
Founder Chris Mattingly was working as a civil engineer designing landfills. When he got laid off, he turned his attention to his garden, and according to Mike, Chris was all about people doing this— working in a garden, growing their own food. The idea grew, Backyard Eats was

born and Mike jumped on board the week before the pandemic hit. “We grew a ton during the pandemic, though it’s unclear whether our young company was growing due to the increased interest in gardening, or if we would have been growing anyway.
Salad was a personal health journey for Chris (now living in Maryland and a co-partner with Mike), after Mike says he was accustomed to a diet of burgers and
fries. So, he jumped on the healthy, local food movement, and has not looked back since. But on an even broader scope, all celebrations involve eating. Regardless of season, what we put into our collective bodies matters. Personal health and a connection to clean food is not just important for an individual or family, but the community and community health—and it all starts with a seed.
Much like working with a landscape designer, Mike begins with a client meeting. “We go out to a property, meet with the owners and ask why—what they want; their needs and desires.” They ask how many people live there, what kind of critters they have in their garden, the water situation. The amount of sun, shade and where it is all located. The slope of the property, accessibility, and versatility. We ask, “Do you want to see the garden from your window—a tomato growing from your sight line?” he says. “There’s sometimes an idea that gardening is ugly and unruly, and we’re trying to change that.” They do a digital 3D rendering, walk them through it on zoom. Then, any tweaks are made and when finalized, the installation is scheduled.
Sounds fairly straight forward, but there is more—much more. “Most of our customers have a deep-seated feeling about wanting to grow food.” Mike says. What is not always known is what. Our clients are always surprised to learn just how much you can do. People know the
common crops like tomatoes, but there are 77 items on our order form.” And that includes items not commonly found in your grocer’s produce section.
“Annuals generally get raised beds,” Mike tells me.” They are not necessarily native, so their conditions need to be controlled.” The soil, the nutrients all require more attention. Perennials that are native can deal better with soil conditions, so can be planted directly in the ground, although still need care in planting. But it is all done with integration in mind. Long gone are the vegetable gardens randomly placed somewhere in the yard. They are made to be intentionally tied into the landscaping, perhaps just outside the kitchen window, with some functional herbs sprinkled in. And they are meant to be long-lasting with versatile crops that can be rotated in and out seasonally. “The common word is succession,” Mike says. Early on, it might be veggies like lettuce, asparagus, and spinach in spring, which gives way to tomatoes, squash, and other summer vegetables, which in turn gives way again to cooler crops. “We do rotate things from year-to-year. Plans are kept on file, and adjustments can be made as desired.”
Trellises are often used for vertical planting, for vines and trailers, cages for tomatoes, peppers, and zucchini. And depending upon the size of the garden, paths are formed for ease in tending. Wire fencing for pest control. “We want to drive engagement with nature,” Mike says. “Do it all in a tasteful way, so people want to make it a focal point.” But they
are not only about in-ground veggies and functional herbs, but edible berries and fruit trees. And while size matters, for variety and yield, a residential garden can range from 16 x 16 plots, down to 2x 4 plots in more urban areas. “Most everyone has some option for eating fresh. It’s surprising just how much you can pack into a small garden,” Mike adds.
But planning and planting isn’t all they do—although it can be. The beauty of this business, besides their planning and planting, is that you can pick and choose what you’d like them to do from there on out. Mike says that 95 percent of their installations involve drip irrigation. So watering isn’t an issue. But they teach and maintain. So, if you want to maintain your garden yourself, no problem. They’ll teach you about pruning and harvesting.
But Backyard Eats will do that too. During their regular visits, they will take care of pest and disease control, and during visits is often when plans are tweaked.
There are about 10 people on staff, and Mike feels it’s important to keep it all internal. Not only does it make people more comfortable to consistently deal with the same contact people and those roaming about in their yards, but it also provides full-time agricultural work to otherwise seasonal workers. They’re truly all about community.
“We are a two-part business”, Mike says. It’s both installation and maintenance, and their job takes them through the seasons. “Our season starts in midFebruary with planning and getting materials, plant stock lined up. It ends around Thanksgiving when the last garden
remains are pulled out. But the installations happen year-round. In-between, they’re focused on their marketing. While much business comes from word-ofmouth, people will see their trucks or find them through social media. Mike says, “It’s about being part of a community— being there, taking an interest in it. It’s not that easy coming into a new community.” It’s a matter of gaining trust. The company is located in Flourtown, Montgomery County. And Mike says, “Having grown up in Chestnut Hill, there was a tight-knit community which was very much focused on homegrown food. It was a great little place to start.” Yet they managed to plant some 150 gardens last season, with 500 planted in total, all through the Greater Philadelphia area.
“Once we get into an area,” Mike adds, “People start talking about us.”
Chatter grew in Westchester, after the company did an installation for a client’s farmhouse. Mike says they were engaged in some major renovations which included the gardens. There was a native meadow and the couple, with an interest in healthy food and cooking, wanted a place to grow their own produce. Backyard Eats got to work with the design, planning, planting, and tending. It stands 14 x 16 and includes the usual suspects such as cherry tomatoes, baby greens, carrots, and zucchini, but also hot peppers, Hakurei turnips (also called Tokyo turnips, which do not need to be cooked) and Delicata squash (sweet with an edible skin). Having little past success with gardens, Mike says, “They were fairly involved
and ambitious but needed someone to do the heavy lifting. The fun garden things like pruning, harvesting and trellis training they learned over time with the help of weekly visits. They’d have the company come for any heavy lifting or more difficult gardening tasks like organic pest and disease control. Through the use of QR code plant labels came understanding how to harvest, store and cook from their garden increasing interaction and home cooking from their space.
Mike always gets a good feeling from not only doing some work for people but also from empowering them to learn and grow.
They advise investing in infrastructure. Raised beds mean fewer weeds, and stronger plants make them more resilient. The right soil, fencing, gates, pathways, trellising are key ingredients. Mike says people sometimes wonder why their crops are not performing well, and think it’s plant quality or spacing, when it can be resolved with the right conditions.
Luckily for them, the competition is little. “There are landscapers who will build gardens, but not offer the services we do.” And being a gardener and nursery person are quite different. In the beginning Backyard Eats grew all their plants from seed. After the growth of the business, it became clear that they needed to work with hand-picked nurseries, which have served them well.
Community takes on a whole other aspect when Backyard Eats works with community gardens, such as in schools and neighborhoods.” It’s extremely

rewarding to work with groups. Kids are often involved, and we have a cool position in which to transfer ideas and information.” Many children don’t connect eating with planting/gardening, so there’s a great teachable moment, transferring the idea of not only eating to live, but to grow it to eat and live well. “We’re often dealing with a couple of moms who volunteer to get it going,” Mike says, “We help with the plan, show them renderings and then light the fire.” Since grants are often involved, the process can be longer and more involved than residential projects. Crowdsourcing is an option too, allowing schools to be funded for such projects. And in these installations other things need to be considered, such as the age of children who will be tending it and disability accessibility. In the end, the education is passed along to kids lucky enough to learn that food doesn’t start out in a grocery store.
Mike says that it’s great to be a key driver in a greater movement that effects health. “Being an influencer in a trend that’s already happening is what keeps us going.”

Mike describes one community garden as extremely rewarding. The Ambler Community Garden was born thanks to a community garden group in Ambler Borough. According to Mike, “The borough obtained a grant from the county, to build a garden in Knights Park (a busy, multi-use park complete with bocce and basketball courts, skateboard, and picnic areas), “But, they didn’t have the direction, knowledge or manpower to make it happen.” So, Backyard Eats rolled up their sleeves and began designing a garden that would both teach and feed. They organized workdays with the help of some dedicated volunteers, did the installation of a 40 x 60 garden, and provided families in the area with such abundance, they were able to donate many storable edibles. Tomatoes, beans, carrots, and hardy greens, interesting fruits, such as raspberries, blackberries and elderberries and more—about 600 combined pounds of it were donated to organizations providing food to those in need; both Weaver’s Way Community Fridge (a onetime co-op), and Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard (where neighbors provide for other neighbors).
Dear Garden Associates, Inc. is an award-winning firm specializing in the design, installation and maintenance of outdoor living spaces. Our goal is to create and maintain gardens of the highest quality possible and to provide a great experience for our clients.
We are able to meet those goals by utilizing high quality materials and having an experienced, talented and well-rounded team. Our designs focus on the immediate as well as long term goals of a garden. This approach ensures success over time as it matures becoming more special with each
season. Our design process incorporates the client’s objectives, tastes and lifestyle in order to create a tailor-made garden. The architecture of the home, site details and its surrounding environment are considered in the design as well. In addition to specifying plant materials, hardscape layouts, pools and structures, our plans include details for water features, fencing and lighting, among other garden elements.
Our installation process is no less exacting. From soil preparation and planting to hand cutting a stone for a water feature, no detail is overlooked in our quest to ensure
the success of your garden. We are extremely particular about the members on our team. By hiring experienced and talented individuals passionate about their chosen specialty in garden making we are able to install or construct all elements we design. This includes, but is not limited to, planting, hardscaping, driveways, pools, pergolas, fencing and lighting.
Building and planting an outdoor living space is part of a progression that continues with nurturing and evolving the idea of a garden into one that grows and matures.
We are proactive in caring for our gardens in order to keep them looking their best. Our maintenance crews are com-
prised of detail oriented individuals with a strong background in horticulture. Having dedicated crews allows team members to learn the subtle nuances of a property, a client’s preferences for how the details are addressed, and to plan what is to be done during the next visit. Our team routinely cares for specialty types of gardens such as formal, cutting, vegetable (from planting to harvesting), woodlands and meadows, to name a few.

This was our second project at this home, after completing a full kitchen renovation, plus mud room, including a dog bath. This time we were back for extending the usable living space to the outdoors. Taking an existing patio space to a new level is right in our wheelhouse, and it’s amazing what can be done with a minimal amount of square feet. This is a good example of how to add to a home, while keeping it fairly simple. Our
clients entertain a lot and they love the outdoors, so we created distinctive designated spaces for them to utilize the outside almost as much as the interior of their home. We were able to create three outdoor “rooms”; a living room, a dining area, and a lounge/TV space, all within one covered area. The footprint was already there, but with just the previous open patio, there had been no specifics or aesthetic for lifestyle areas. Adding a roof not only protects from
rain and extreme sun, but it also provides a way to add extra heat when needed, thereby extending the seasons and reasons for taking full advantage of the space. Skylights keep the vibe light and airy, and also help the outdoor space feel less confined and more open. With the addition of a fireplace and overhead radiant heaters, this sets everything up for three and possibly even four seasons of use. These Philadelphia Eagles fans are ready for some football, and
yes, the dogs are allowed on the outdoor furniture!

J.R. Maxwell Builders crafted a stunning modern home set amidst breathtaking natural scenery for their client. Clean lines, open spaces, and a seamless blend of mid-century modern design with the client’s personal style defined this project. The client’s vision, inspired by large statement furniture pieces, guided the layout and design. Interior spaces reflected their taste while accommodat-
ing their lifestyle. Oversized pieces were carefully placed in the home before railings were installed due to their size.
Weekly team meetings, led by the project manager, ensured collaboration and kept the client deeply involved. Wolstenholme Associates, the project architects, played a pivotal role in aligning the home’s design with the client’s modern aesthetic. The team overcame challenges,
such as extensive excavation of rocky terrain and installing utilities over long distances, all while adhering to the schedule and budget. Innovations included crushing and repurposing excavated rocks for the driveway, minimizing waste and costs.
The first floor houses functional spaces, including the primary suite, a great room, and an office, while the second floor features additional bedrooms and a bunkroom. Eco-conscious systems—hybrid insulation, metal roofing, and expansive energy-efficient windows—ensure sustainability without
sacrificing luxury.
This project exemplifies vision, teamwork, and craftsmanship, resulting in a home designed for family, functionality, and the future.
For remodeling, renovations, new home construction, or commercial projects, J.R. Maxwell Builders provides trusted, top-tier services. Their Mink Run Millwork division offers cabinetry and millwork solutions to streamline your project. Call 215.345.1953 or visit jrmaxwellbuilders.com to learn more.
Sycamore Landscape Design Build exists to design and build timeless outdoor living spaces for families to cherish for generations.
Inspired by our namesake tree, Sycamore Landscape Design Build adapts to our clients’ lives and spaces. Satisfied by hard work and great teamwork, Justin’s first summer job in 1999 has matured into an all-encompassing landscape design,
build and care service, and continues to grow in capacity and offerings.
Our clients invest not only in exceptional landscapes, but quality processes. First, we use a four-step design process to map each client’s unique vision onto a step-by-step path. Well-designed spaces not only optimize resources but get better with age. Each generation creates lasting, cherished memories in the shade of the
young trees planted in your outdoor living space.
Once construction is underway, we walk the path together. Friendly collaborators, our team members maintain thoughtful communication with homeowners, subcontractors and coworkers to ensure clear and trouble-free client experiences. From young families to empty nesters, we cater our project management to each homeowner’s needs making the process as memorable and distinctive as
their soon-to-be finished patio, blossoming garden or glowing fire.
Our motto “Timeless Design” means that your outdoor living space is built to last. Whatever you are imagining, whether it’s a grand entrance, a simple walkway, a full garden oasis, or a private family space in the backyard, we custom build everything to how you intend to use your space now and in the future.

Nestled into the surrounding hills, the Entertainment Barn at Hillview Farm offers a harmonious blend of rustic elegance and modern functionality. Period Architecture created a design that pays homage to classic bank barn design, with its fieldstone-constructed lower level and timber-frame hillside entrance.
At the end of a winding driveway, a set of expansive sliding wooden doors beckon entry into the barn. In stark contrast to the rich wood shutters and fieldstone cladding, vertical board-and-batten siding defines the exterior façade. Another traditional feature of the Pennsylvania bank barn, a central cupola crowns the gable roof, with its eagle
weather vane swaying in the wind.
Inside, a spacious, open layout brings friends and family together for entertainment. From reclaimed oak floors and walls to the wood board cathedral ceiling, the materiality of the interior exudes rusticity and warmth. A floor-to-ceiling fireplace serves as the centerpiece of the space, grounding the design and drawing loved ones together.
The Entertainment Barn at Hillview Farm seamlessly intertwines bucolic charm with contemporary practicality to provide an ideal setting for festive celebrations, milestone events, and cherished memories.

The trust that is built is evident from the first meeting to the day the project is completed. This is why when interviewing their clients, the common theme of responses arises as to why they chose to have Rolf Schroeder General Contractors complete their remodeling and addition projects. “They had our best interest in mind…They listened…They helped me stay on budget or explained to me where I went over and
allowed me to decide what was important to me…” The list goes on. The photos above are just a few examples of the projects completed for these clients.

This architectural design is a great example of what is possible when completely transforming an existing home. Conceived as a pastoral retreat from the clients’ New York City loft, it warranted a deep connection with nature, rich materials, and a breathable space. Elements of wood, stone, and metal create a tactile, warm atmosphere in the midst of high ceilings and unbounded views. The open twostory area is a modern expression of the
barns of Bucks County with an open floor plan and a soaring, vaulted ceiling. The new residence sits on the existing foundation and while many improvements were made, the entry remains as a memento of the original home. In this new design by Ralph Fey Architects, the building grew in height, taking advantage of the tremendous views and embracing the moving sun at all points of the day.
This project is one of two Bucks County
AIA (American Institute of Architects) awards received by Ralph Fey Architects in 2020. “Our vision is always to create successful projects for our clients”, says Ralph Fey. “We greatly appreciate the acknowledgement and recognition from our architectural design peers for the work that we do.”
The thoughtful joining of spaces on the first floor creates a functional, livable floor plan where rooms are delineated by changes in height or gestures of exposed structure
while the staircase embraces the “modern farmhouse” feel with elements of steel and wood. The “barn” is evident in the overall shell of the house but with long spans of steel instead of traditional wood timber framing. The result is a space that breathes, ultimately providing all the light, views, and openness that a farmhouse rarely receives.
