He is on staff at the practice, as well as Wills Eye Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. “We provide a customized experience. Every patient is evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively by their surgeon. One of the things that we specialize in is making our patients independent from contact lenses and glasses. We are able to do this in multiple ways for different ages groups. For patients ages 25 to 40, we can use a laser to shape the cornea in a procedure called PRK or LASIK. For those who are not candidates for LASIK, we offer other procedures. One of the newest out there is called an implantable polymer lens. This is a contact lens that is inserted into the eye. We are one of the few practices in the area to offer this,” Dr. Meghpara says. Eye Associates of Bucks County is located at 360 Middletown Boulevard, Suite 402, Langhorne, PA 19047. Doctors Richard M. Goldfarb and Peter Sinaiko of Progressive Men’s Health are using a highly effective nonsurgical, non-invasive method of treating ED
I
f lifestyle changes, medications, penis pumps, injections, and suppositories have not helped your erectile dysfunction (ED), it is time to call Progressive Men’s Health. They provide a smart way to heal your ED. Based in Langhorne, Progressive Men’s Health is a practice led by two of the nation’s leading physicians for men’s health and urology. Richard M. Goldfarb, MD, FACS, is a highly sought after surgeon who lectures and trains on cosmetic, surgical, and aesthetic laser topics. Dr. Goldfarb is the founder of SmartLipo & Plastic Surgery in Langhorne. He also is the Medical Director for The Silhouette Lift, Selphyl, and Viora. Dr. Goldfarb partnered with Peter Sinaiko, MD, FACS, to form Progressive Men’s Health. Dr. Sinaiko is a board certified urologist. He invented the Silhouette Bladder Lift and is known for his work in prostate cancer research and the use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in urology. Dr. Sinaiko also works with minimally invasive shockwave therapy for treating Peyronie’s disease (excess fibrosis or plaque in the penile tissue) and erectile dysfunction.
The FDA-cleared shockwave therapy for ED used by the doctors has several benefits. It has long-term effectiveness. The procedure is non-invasive and non-surgical. In fact, it is done in the office as an outpatient procedure with little discomfort. Patients see almost immediate improvement in their ED. The therapy is affordable, and most men will only need to do it once. According to Dr. Sinaiko, the treatment consists of six visits over a three-week time period. “Each treatment consists of shocks. Between the fifth and sixth treatment, we give an injection of platelet rich plasma (PRP), which is the patient’s own platelets. This helps in tissue regeneration and healing. We are the only practice in Bucks County offering this regenerative therapy, and one of the very few in the entire country.” Progressive Men’s Health is located at 940 Town Center Drive, Suite F 100, Langhorne, PA 19047. You can visit their website at www.progressivemenshealth.com or like them on Facebook. To request an ED consultation with Dr. Sinaiko or Dr. Goldfarb, call 215-764-3131. SUMMER

Healing Wounds with Oxygen
H
yperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is medical administered 100% oxygen at pressures greater than two to three times atmospheric pressure at sea level. During treatment oxygen fills a hyperbaric chamber and increases the oxygen concentration within a person’s body to 15 to 20 times the normal at the cellular level. This accelerates the healing process. It has few side effects and it has been shown to foster new blood vessel formation and to increase immune capabilities. It is used to assist patients with problems ranging from chronic wounds to radiation injury, severe bone infections, and various neurological impairments. The FDA has approved use for wounds, burns, failed skin grafts, bone infections, radiation injury, crush
injuries, necrotizing fasclitis, gangrene, brain abscess, CO poisoning, air embolism and decompression sickness. Internationally it has been used successfully in treating traumatic brain injury, PTSD, sports injuries, soft tissue trauma, stroke, and other problems ranging from autism to rheumatoid arthritis. Oxygen Oasis Hyperbaric Wellness Center is a freestanding wound care and hyperbaric facility that has two types of hyperbaric chambers. Oxygen Oasis Hyperbaric Wellness Center provides patient care for the treatment of a wide range of chronic, non-healing wounds. Oxygen Oasis is located at 848 Town Center Drive, Langhorne, PA 19047. The Gift of Time
k, you watch your fats, you don’t smoke, you drink very moderately and you are careful not to eat too many processed foods. For the most part you have a healthy diet, except for that one thing—coffee. You have to have it and you drink several cups a day for waking up in the morning and a renewal of energy throughout the day. Also, you like it. Coffee these days is good and if you don’t like it plain, there are plenty of choices you can make where other things like chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla and so on are added to make it taste like a dessert. And you know this thing of yours is bad for you. It has caffeine and who knows what else. The good news is you probably do not have your facts straight. Coffee is not bad for you, and in fact, it has some very wholesome qualities. The latest Harvard study on coffee and its effects on our health find that up to six cups of coffee daily does not increase the risk of death from any cause. There is no indication that coffee drinking is an unhealthy habit. In fact there are indicators that coffee is very good for some people. Preliminary research shows that coffee may protect against type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver cancer and liver cirrhosis. It even shows that it may have heart protective qualities that lower the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. So, go ahead, have a cup of Joe, just be careful what you add. Some coffee drinks have so much sugar, whipped cream and other ingredients that a single serving has 500 calories.
W
hat would your response be to finding out you have Stage IV ovarian cancer? Susan Hutchinson, grieved by the diagnosis, turned to her faith in God and to prayer. She said, “With God there is always hope.” Surrounded by her family and friends, they prayed. She stopped being afraid of what the doctors said. “I would read Proverbs 29:25 twenty five times a day, ‘The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.’ ” Susan stopped being afraid of her doctors and began to trust in God for her healing. The doctors were His instruments. “I never once went on the Internet. It was Mark Twain who said, ‘Be careful of what you read in health books. You may die of a misprint.’ ” So Susan trusted God for who He is rather than what He could do. “There’s freedom in that,” she said. God healed her. And now with over five years of being free of ovarian cancer, she speaks to women’s groups, small groups, churches and to anyone who wants to hear her inspiring message of hope. She received a gift of time and wants to share hope with others.Already she has spoken throughout the region and has encouraged many with her positive, God honoring message of faith and healing. To contact Susan Hutchinson, you can call her at 215-968-0199 or email susanlhutchinson@verizon.net. HealthWatch Relief For Chronic Pain
C
hronic pain affects approximately 100 million people in the United States and costs up to $635 billion annually in medical treatment and lost productivity. Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS), a form of neurostimulation, is a proven therapy that has been used for more than 40 years for managing chronic pain of the arms, legs and trunk. The therapy involves the implant of a small device that emits low levels of electrical energy to interrupt or mask the transmission of pain signals of the brain. St. Luke’s University Network offers SCS and has recently been chosen to take part in a national study to evaluate a new form of stimulation called burst stimulation. Scott Loev, DO, Medical Director and Interventional Pain Specialist at St. Luke’s Spine & Pain Associates and Steven Falowski, MD, Functional Neurosurgeon with St. Luke’s Neurosurgical Associates, were chosen to participate in this pivotal study because of their multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to pain management. For more than four years, Dr. Loev and Dr. Falowski have partnered to improve care for those who suffer from chronic pain in the Greater Lehigh Valley, Bucks and Montgomery counties. For more information about SCS, Burst technology and other ways of relieving chronic pain, visit sluhn.org/lesspain.
Heat Stroke Symptoms and Treatment
H
eat stroke is a condition where the body temperature rises dramatically from exposure to excessive heat and sun. Heat stroke, unlike other heat related conditions such as heat exhaustion and heat cramps, is a medical emergency that is often fatal if not quickly treated. It’s primary symptom is a temperature of 104 F or above often coupled with severe dehydration so that the victim does not sweat fast enough to dissipate heat. Those most likely to get heat stroke are the elderly, athletes and individuals who work physically outside in the hot sun. Signs of heat stroke include dizziness, muscle cramps and aches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness and a headache. Look for a high body temperature, absence of sweating combined with hot red or flushed dry skin, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, confusion, hallucinations, seizure and sometimes coma. Anyone with heat stroke symptoms needs immediate medical treatment but until that arrives, place victim in shady area, remove clothing, apply cool or tepid water to skin perhaps spraying with a garden hose. Fan victim and place ice packs under the armpits and groin. If able have the victim drink cool liquids. The prevention of heat stroke is to avoid becoming dehydrated and to avoid vigorous physical activities in hot and humid weather. If you have to work in hot weather, drink plenty of fluids. It is also advisable to wear hats and loose clothing. 114

Anti-Aging Secret
Telomeres, protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, shorten as people age and may be a measure of how quickly someone is aging by their length. A research project done by scientists at UC San Francisco and the Preventive Medicine Research Institute found in a study of localized, early-stage prostate cancer patients that patients who switched to a very low fat plant based diet and made other lifestyle changes such as walking 30 minutes per day had longer telomeres at the end of the study, resulting of a reversal of cells that were aging. This study was small and not conclusive, but Dr. Dean Ornish, director of the study, is hopeful that lifestyle changes can lengthen telomeres and in turn lifespan.

been recognized with a Gold-Plus quality achievement award.Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure is a quality improvement pro-
gram that helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and
reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. Launched in 2005, numerous published studies have demonstrat-
ed the program’s success in achieving patient outcome improvements, including reductions in 30-day readmissions.Doylestown
Hospital earned the award by meeting specific quality achieve-
ment measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure
patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the patient, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies. These would include ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics, anticoagulants, and
other appropriate therapies. Before patients are discharged, they
also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall
health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.“Doylestown Hospital is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our heart failure patients, and
implementing the American Heart Association's Get With The

their commitment to heart failure care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines
steering committee and Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and
Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. “Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures can reduce patients’
length of stays and 30-day readmission rates and also reduce dis-
parity gaps in care."According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million adults in the United States suffer from heart fail-
ure, with the number expected to rise to eight million by 2030. Statistics show that each year about 870,000 new cases are diagnosed and about 50 percent of those diagnosed will die within
five years. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications or devices and with healthy lifestyle changes.

Working Your Body Laterally
y cell phone was vibrating so loud that people around me begin to stare. It was one of those quiet periods in between talks while meeting with a potential magazine client. So I had to answer it. It was my good buddy from South Philly. She was going on a mile a minute about this new fitness machine she just purchased. On and on she went—so loud that everyone around me could hear her. Talk about embarrassment! Of course I tried to blow her off in a nice way and suggested we talk later. I did my usual salesman, or should I say salesgirl smile, as I put my cell phone in my pocket. They didn’t know I was sweating it out. I just went onto the next good reason why readers of magazines trust what they read and why our magazine builds your brand. I landed the account. And, a big one at that! When I get outside with contract in hand I call Anita back. She tells me she purchased a Helix Lateral Trainer. She has a gym membership in South Philly, but at times when she can’t get there, she works from her home gym. Now we are both going a mile a minute, and I’m still wound up about landing the big one. We set up a day for me to come over to see this mean machine, as she calls it. The day I visit, Anita is anxiously waiting for me at the front door. We hug, and she rushes me back to see the Helix Lateral Trainer. She begins to give me a quick run down on how to operate her “mean machine” and I begin to get a feel for it, and it immediately seems different (with a side to side motion) that is working my muscles in various ways. I never felt this with other machines. I am working my legs and glutes by sitting and standing and switching things up. With any elliptical you are just standing in the same position, but the Helix offers a variety of ways to move around and work on different muscles. You feel the impact on your inner and outer things. With other machines you don’t feel that type of targeted effect. Traditional equipment is mainly up and down.

The Helix has lateral rotation, which sets it apart and changes the experience and the benefits you get from it. The motion here is sideways and my legs are moving out in a figure eight motion. When your right leg is moving clockwise, you are toning your inner thighs and glutes, and when your left leg is moving you also are toning your inner thighs and glutes. The nice thing is when changing directions it changes the muscle groups you are working. This is a low impact lateral motion with a nice smooth feel to it.As I continued to do my movements, the Helix was providing a lateral rotation in the way my body is meant to move, unlike other equipment. This is an intense and effective full body cardio workout. Anita has had several knee surgeries and back problems, which made running nearly impossible. She really has to be careful in the gym. This low impact machine not only feels great on her joints, but also got her back into shape fast and felt better than ever. The Helix is so much smaller than an elliptical, and since the movement is sideways, it doesn’t take that much space. It only needs a space of 4 feet by 3 feet. Bottom line, the Helix works because it ‘s different. The elliptical is a repetition of what you do when walking. By using new leg muscles, you will tone up different parts of the leg than you would normally reach. It puts focus on the whole leg at a 360-degree angle and not just the back and front of the legs like other machines. For rehabilitation the Helix has benefits you can’t get with conventional equipment. A good example would be someone in a rehab working on the abductors and adductors, something you just can’t do on other equipment. The Helix is all the rage with baby boomers. They just can’t get enough of it.They enjoy the ride while toning and burning calories. It’s also a big hit with their children. Two thumbs up for the Helix Lateral Trainer! One thumb up for Anita and one thumb up for me. Heck, I’d talk a mile a minute about it! For more information visit www.helixco.com. And, as with any exercise program, always consult your physician before you begin.
