Page 10 - We throw it back to the 00’s where The Bucks Student was born Well I’ll be darned, 100 editions later and here we are. Whilst I haven’t worked on all of the lovely editions that you can see to the right, I have been able to get my grubby little design mitts on edition 75 onwards. And it’s been a pleasure to produce over a quarter of The Bucks Student in circulation. Even in recent times, it’s been a wild ride with switching to a fully virtual release and a ‘lite’ edition to keep you up to date during lockdown. But I think it’s also been a wild ride throughout as you can hopefully see from the various re-designs on the following page, as well as the more punchy headlines of ‘F**K Fees’ and ‘NO MORE STUDENT PAPER?’ But despite the clickbait (read-bait?) ‘no more student paper’ headline, we’re still going strong fifty eight editions later and have no plans to slow down any time soon. So thank you for joining us for part of this ride, and as always, there’s a spot in the paper for you to submit anything you’d like. Just contact editor@thebucksstudent.com and we’ll take it from there.

Sabb update
The Bucks Student
My priorities for the year Recently I was asked by the University to introduce myself to their Student Experience Committee and talk about my priorities for this academic year as the new President of Bucks Students’ Union. The committee is one of the most important in the institution and is where all matters affecting our members’ overall experience at Bucks are discussed, so it was a good opportunity to share what’s important to me and our Union. I’ve settled into my new role and have undergone a whole host of training, induction and orientation events and visits. And now that I have now found my feet, I can present a clear set of priorities for myself on behalf of the wider Union and our membership. There’s so much for us to do but in no particular order here is my current Top Ten for making life better for students at Bucks… Building a better relationship – this year I hope to build relationships with senior university colleagues which strengthens communication between our organisations, where we are trusted and consulted in a timely fashion, where meetings between both parties are valued and working with the Union is believed to be meaningful rather than a step in the process. We are a stronger institution when we are working together openly and honestly, and I believe we can break down barriers this year.
Honor Fletcher - President
Growing collaboration – I’m taking a leading role in the CEAPP (Collaborative Engagement and Participation Project). Through a more structured way of working with the academic schools we hope to grow already impressive levels of participation in Union activities to a sector leading 70% of our membership, build engagement that will consolidate our place in the top 10 of the NSS league table and increase course rep coverage to 100% ambitious targets that I am confident we can meet.
By Honor Fletcher (she/her) Supporting black leaders – while we have great levels of participation and engagement from students of colour we have relatively few taking their levels of involvement further and assuming leadership roles within our organisation. Starting with October’s Black History month, then through working with relevant societies, networks and our elected BAME officer throughout the year we will be showcasing positive role models, highlighting great opportunities, and making strides to further understanding the barriers that prevent greater involvement. Enabling our executive officers – we now have all our executive officer positions roles filled, representing a range of liberation and specific student groups that we believe have been previously underrepresented. We’ve already completely revamped their training and support package, launched new events for their constituents and established networks for each of their areas. Together we can represent all students at BNU and make the university fully inclusive. Establishing a better understanding of our work and value – Even in my short time here I’ve realised there are many of our institutional colleagues who misunderstand or under value our purpose and impact. It is on us to better communicate our contribution to the university community, and we’ve started working on a range of mechanisms to better educate, bust myths and establish common ground. From fortnightly e-briefings, academic welcome packs and regular meetings we are doing what we can to disseminate important information and build rapport. Creating student leaders – Now we have established our Leadership Academy I will be supporting out team to grow this year’s cohort from 25 to 50 students who will all receive a bespoke package of training, support and mentorship targeted at the leadership or employment opportunity they have identified, helping participants get the most out of their BNU journey. Alongside this and the progress we are making in developmental offers as well as the Bucks Award, Internship Programme and the Job Shop I know we can help even more students into really great roles both at BNU and beyond. Promoting a safe and inclusive environment – while we run many campaigns and initiatives to promote personal safety, mental health, and well-being I would like the Union to go further and investigate a ‘Nightline’.
A confidential 24hr phone support system available to all our student community whenever they may need it. These projects run successfully at other institutions, and I have already started scoping possibilities for BNU. Connecting with the community – I’m excited to be part of the team launching Community Bucks, our initiative to make campus life more vibrant, connect our student body more closely with the local community and create hundreds of new opportunities for our members. Ensuring Fit for Purpose Space – Our offices are now bursting at the seams; our cafes and venues would benefit hugely from refurbishment, and we are desperate for more space for society activity and student groups in which to meet and enjoy their varied activities. I want to keep the conversation going to make sure the confines of our physical environment aren’t holding the Union back. Providing more support for students in rented accommodation – Halls are full, and the university is growing which means many more of our students are reliant on private landlords and high street rental operations. Their experience can be very mixed, often impacting on their overall experience and I want to work with the university to build a service to properly support students who do not live in halls of residence. There’s so many more great initiatives, projects, campaigns and events that I could list, and Tom and Tash are working on many more and I know there will be many other challenges to tackle, student issues to resolve and opportunities to take that will arise along the way. This year is the union’s most ambitious and exciting. It’s a thrill to be involved and if you’d like to find out more about what we have planned please do get in touch and we can arrange a tour of our organisation and an introduction to our brilliant team. The academic year of 2021/22 has already started with amazing attendances at our events, mixers and activities and with a thriving freshers fair and a huge number of new and returning students signing up to clubs, societies and a whole host of student opportunities. This is all set to be a great year back!

Editor’s update
The Bucks Student By Jessy Clark (she/her)
Editor’s update Hi all, Jessy here! (she/her) We’ve finally made it to edition #100 - How exciting! I have only been a part of the paper for a short while but I’ve really felt so much more involved in the Students’ Union and Bucks as a whole from proofing and editing all of these articles. The paper is one of my personal favourite qualities about studying here at BNU, and that’s because it has so much room for interactivity and growth; Being an editor means I can learn so much about the variety of societies that are up and running, and what they’re currently up to - I also feel so much more invested in the latest events, all inside a single edition of our paper! I believe our paper merges the space between academia and student life, creating a relatable and laidback representation of all the fun stuff you don’t get to discuss in lectures or topics you wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to consider within a busy schedule.
Jessy Clark - Student editor
The Bucks Student is a fantastic and essential part of what Bucks New Uni is all about, sharing and distributing crucial information on serious topics, from mental health awareness to sexual health guides. There is so much more I’d love to do with and for its growth and being in my third and final year makes me feel all that much more passionate about building it up for the next editor to take over from. One idea being far, far more collaboration and participation with students and the paper; I’m talking cartoonists, illustrators, photographers, creative writers, movie enthusiasts, societies, poets, journalists, anyone with opinions they’re dying to rant about, got a project you’ve worked night and day on and just want to show people? Submit it!
If you would like to get involved with the Newspaper and writer’s newsgroup, you can always drop an email to us at editor@thebucksstudent.com or j_essyclark@hotmail.com.

Edition 12 throwback We dug back through our archives and although the elusive first edition seems to have unfortunately gone missing, we found this gem of an article from edition 12 reviewing the (then!) current X-factor season by Siobhan Carney... Clichés, Gamu-gate, more sob stories than a Jeremy Kyle episode and a crotch grabbing performance by Usher who, after being lowered into the studio via a giant light sabre, appeared to have reduced his entire back catalogue of song lyrics to the words, “Yeah” and “Come on”. It’s The X-Factor of course, where on Saturday night Cheryl Cole ditched her L’Oreal contract in favour of her new role; modelling for Ronseal’s new fake tan line. (Either that or the colour balance on my television is broken.) Yes, X-Factor…a talent show that has so far failed to live up to the standard set in previous years. A dilemma not helped by this year’s final 16. No vocal powerhouse like Alexandra Burke or Leona Lewis, no jaw dropping weirdness in the Rhydian/Same Difference mould, instead we have Cher “Ring-a-dinging” Lloyd, Wagner Carrilho (Brazilian Nut) and candy floss haired Storm Lee. The biggest problem with X-Factor 2010 is the judges. Louis, (Simon Cowell’s eternal whipping boy) has the same resigned expression I imagine is permanently etched on the face of Amy Winehouse’s Pub Landlord. Danni looks bored, Cheryl appears to be channelling the spirit of Derek Accora by prophetically telling Gamu, “I’m going to have to send you home”, and then there’s Simon Cowell; a man whose teeth should come with a UV warning. Poor Simon seems to be afflicted with a particularly virulent strain of, “Having said that”-itis, meaning he’s now incapable of finishing a sentence without it. Last year it was, “By any
standard,” this year it’s, “Having said that”; Cowell has more catchphrases than a draw string toy. Unfortunately the disease also seems to have spread to Dermot ‘Come on people’ O’Leary, as well as the contestants. Examples include: “I’m living my dream”...”it’s been a journey”...”I want this so much”, etc. Another gripe is the new Sunday night results format. Previously implemented on Strictly Come Dancing, it was quickly abandoned by BBC bosses. A decision ITV would be wise to follow. Bloated, overindulgent and packed with unnecessary fillers, it adds nothing to the program. It would also help if, for every five minutes of action, we weren’t then bombarded with a fifteen minute ad break. Such are the frequency of these interruptions I’m thinking of suggesting a new ITV reality show to producers; Ad-Factor….A 14 week competition in which the public vote for their favourite commercial.
between Madonna and Jimmy Hill, this delusional fame monster somehow managed to inject some much needed entertainment into, what might otherwise, have been a forgettable series. Particularly on last week’s first live show where - dressed as a camp power ranger - she earned this amusing compliment from Cowell, “I actually liked what you were wearing. I’m so bored of people coming out on these audition shows and trying to look like somebody else.” This is of course the same Katie who came to her first audition dressed as Madonna, kitted herself out as Gwen Stefani for the judge’s houses, and now appears to be styling herself on Lady Gaga. Luckily - thanks to the X-Factor stylists - Katie wasn’t the only fashion offender. Other crimes against clothes include Paige performing as The ‘Badly dressed’ Prince of Bel-Air, and Mary Byrne singing, ‘It’s a man’s world’ whilst dressed as a Sumo Wrestler.
Frankly, it all seems to be a symptom of a far larger problem, namely the shows insistence on taking itself too seriously. Reality clichés are delivered without a hint of irony, meaning the program has almost become a spoof; case in point...the plethora of sob stories. Undoubtedly a pre-requisite of all reality shows, it’s still a wonder that none of this year’s contestants have required medical rehydration.
Still, for all its failings, no other show divides opinion like The X-Factor. Where else on television would you witness Cheryl Cole (ex-wife of Ashley, friend to Will.I.AM and mentor to Rebecca Ferguson) being accused of racism? Or the brief cameo of Sharon Osborne (ironically just before Halloween) in which it looks like she’s spent the last 3 years stuck in a wind tunnel?
However, the show hasn’t been a total loss, mostly thanks to Katie Waissel. No shrinking violet this girl. Like a disastrous cloning experiment
Yes, it’s fallen short this year but in the words of Simon Cowell...having said all that, it’s still the best thing on television.

Giant Rooks interview
The Bucks Student By Zuzanna Maja
Giant Rooks Interview with keyboarder Jonathan Wischniowski and bassist Luca Göttner from German indie band Giant Rooks. Do you have your favourite part of touring? Luca: When it ends off. No... it is a joke. Well, I don’t know. Two weeks ago, we spent about maybe 10 days in England. It is always good fun to go there. I think this is my favourite part of the tour - to come to England, but the whole tour was great. It is the country of the music Jonathan: Yeah, that is why we like to be there, because it is the country where our favourite musicians are from and some of our favourite bands. So, it is even more impressive to be there. Then people from that country are going to our concerts and they are singing along. So, it is very impressive. Luca: Especially, native English speakers, because we are singing in English, and it is nice to see that they like the lyrics.
You just released your new album, Wild Stere. How would you describe it? Luca: Well, it’s a hard question. Maybe we could say that most of the tracks which are on the EP we wrote back in our hometown - in Hamm, where we are actually from. We moved to Berlin last year- Last summer. These are the last tracks we wrote in our hometown. We were looking to see new places and to come to a city like Berlin. I think you can see this on this EP. Jonathan: I think it describes a bit of the excitement of growing to the next step, going to the next city or playing new shows in very new cities. So, maybe we can also describe it in that way.
Do you have somebody who inspires you? Jonathan: We love to listen to as much music as we can, so every time when we have time off on tour, everybody is listening to music on their headphones and exploring some new stuff and music. We like many types of music, either modern music or popular music as well much older or classical music and jazz music. Luca: I mean, back in the day, maybe 10 years ago- people were in separated groups. One group who’d listen to indie, another group who’d listen to metal. Nowadays, there are no such separations. You can catch the rest of the interview at teaindie.com

Back to the noughties, just what did happen back then?
It’s been a long thirteen years of The Bucks Student papers, between Freshers’ specials, our lite edition and elections spectaculars - we’ve seen it all. But as you might have gathered from the edition 12 throwback, life was quite different back in 2008. But what else was happening here on earth in 2008?

Last weekend saw the return of Halloween, with our biggest Halloween Weekender yet! We kicked off our long weekend of spooky activities with a Fright Night Film Night for the horror-film-lovers, with a spooky screening of Gordon Green’s 2018 slasher ‘Halloween’, with a sinister sweet stand and enough popcorn to shake a scythe at! Our very own RAG society opened Friday with their donate to participate Pumpkin Carving Competition. SOAP continued the carving chaos with their early evening pumpkin carving workshop, during which RAG announced the successful winning Pumpkin from their competition! All pumpkin’ed out, we began our series of late-night events with SOAP’s ‘Michael Myers Murder Maze’; this saw the Lounge transformed into a ‘Halloween’ themed murder maze with scare actors and freak performers and all the gruesome giveaways they could offer!
Rusty Recommends
If that wasn’t enough, we brought back our famous Halloween club night on Saturday under the name: Bloodshed! This included your muchloved scare maze, with spine-chilling sound effects and thrilling scare performers to make you jump at every turn! For those that wanted to brace the cold and escape the fear, there were food vans and a bar outside, with a popular heated seating area. We responded to your wishes after the success of the Freshers’ Ball brunch and welcomed our Bloodbrunch on Sunday morning for those that managed to hack the full weekend; the bloodthirsty survivors of our terrifying weekend slurped down our tasty Bloody Mary’s and classic breakfast foods.

Hi, my name is Maya and I’m a Dance and Fitness student here at Bucks. I wanted to become a Movember ambassador as I feel it is important to take on a big leadership role combined with raising money for a good cause. I’ve always helped out with fundraising events with my family since a young age from fun runs, to bake sales to huge family raffles. By becoming the Movember ambassador I can combine my previous knowledge to help raise awareness and money for the charity. I personally experienced a loss due to suicide when I was younger so having an organisation to fundraise for, such as Movember, offers so much more opportunity for men. Movember is the leading organisation that works in mental health, suicide prevention, prostate and testicular cancer. Their aim is to reduce premature death of men by 25% before 2030. So far they have funded 1250 men’s health projects since 2003. This includes projects such as Ironman registry and men building better relationships. The values they share are fun, respectful and humble to make all men feel welcome no matter what age. It is so important for any man to feel safe and supported whether you experience any of these or not. You can help us with this movement by joining in our fundraisers or even setting one up yourself. Movember is most known for growing a moustache or beard over the month of November. If you feel you want to try this, head over to uk.movember.com to set up a fundraising page for this. We need as much support as we can get with this project so I hope you will all get involved!
Brandon Tester - Movember Ambassador Hey, my name is Brandon Tester and I’m currently a third year Education Studies student. I am heavily involved in the Students Union, covering roles such as Student Trustee and Rep, Bucks Men’s Rugby President and RAG Society’s Treasurer! I will be adding to this list by being one of your Movember Ambassadors! I will be helping run events, post social media surrounding Movember and men’s mental health and much much more! Although I can’t really grow much of a Moustache I will be taking part in all the other events Tom Featherstone and the team has prepared for the month! The reasoning behind me wanting this role is because mental health has impacted my life massively over the course of my learning journey. I understand and know from first-hand experience the impact of ill mental health such as depression and anxiety can have on men. You’ll learn about my journey with dealing with mental health and what we can do to create positive mental health throughout next month so please keep a keen eye out!

Calling for Employability Ambassadors! We are excited to announce that we are now recruiting our Employability Ambassadors for 2021 – 2022, with a new reward scheme in place for this year! This role will add a whole host of skills to your CV and will allow you to show your initiative in improving developmental opportunities for our members. We are all hoping for a year closer to “normal” so there should be plenty of opportunities to boost activities for your school. You will focus on being responsible for supporting and developing the recreational and skills programme offered by the Big Deal and promoting all activities to increase participation and enhance membership development. You will be working closely with the Training and Development Coordinator, course reps and your school officer to ensure we are providing a diverse, developmental and fun offer and you would be expected to be passionate about selfdevelopment and driven to help provide suitable opportunities for all members of Bucks Students’ Union.
This is an ideal opportunity for you to get involved in CV boosting activities and skills so that you leave university in the most employable position possible. No formal qualifications are required for this role and ambassadors will be given introductory training explaining the role and responsibilities and covering the basic skills required to undertake the role. Ongoing in-depth support is available throughout the year from the Students’ Union’s Training and Development Team and Sabbatical Officers. Skills learnt will include written and verbal communication, networking and creativity, organisational skills and time management providing you with specific examples to use in interview situations. And if all that’s not enough, you will get a FREE Employability Ambassador hoodie, automatic acceptance into our Leadership Academy for 2021/2022, an invite to our exclusive Union Awards 2022 and the potential to earn up to £150 for your work through the year! It is estimated that this will require a 2 hour per week time commitment although this will be flexible around your studies and depending on the programme of activities. This position is open for applications now! So please visit our Bucks Students’ Union jobs page for further information and to apply. We look forward to hearing from you!

Bucks Roller Skating
The Bucks Student By Amy Sorrell
Bucks Roller Skating Is coming soon! A new society is joining the union and it is the perfect opportunity to meet new friends all the while becoming more fit by just having fun! As captain, I want to offer any member of the union the chance to learn, practice, and enjoy the wonders of roller skating. Whether you want to practice the viral moonwalking or test out some new roller blades, our society offers fun and casual sessions in various locations around Wycombe, catering to students of all capabilities. Our committee members have years of experience and are passionate about roller skating, promoting the mental and physical health benefits roller skating brings. We want to show others why we love what we do and are excited to have the chance and space to do so.
We will have trips to Rollermania once a month at the Wycombe Leisure Centre, where you can rent skates and enjoy a disco style evening with catchy tunes and games. There is also the opportunity to attend weekly sessions for society members who have their own skates and want to hone their skills and or even work on backwards skating. And if you have any questions about our sessions or the society, keep a lookout for our committee fundraiser coming up and follow our social media pages for updates on upcoming sessions or drop us an email. Email: bnu.skatingsociety@gmail.com Instagram: BNU Skating Facebook: BNU Skating
Finally, our committee understands the importance of knowing each member and how best we can facilitate everyone’s needs. We will be holding socials each week offering both SU socials with drinks and plenty of dancing, plus quieter socials such as movie nights with popcorn and games. Bucks Roller Skating has something for everyone, and we look forward to meeting you very soon.

Netball Every Wednesday we put on socials which have also had a large turnout. Each week is a different theme and this Wednesday we have a Halloween social with a theme of Cops and Robbers. It is also our Welcome week where we get to know all of the new freshers with a few games and some drinks in the SU. Last week we had an initials social where we had to dress up as something that is the same as our first initial; there were a lot of fun outfits that people came dressed as. We have had 1 sober social so far and we hope to put more on throughout the year, along with a lot of other themed socials such as a joint army theme with rugby and a Christmas all-dayer. For RAG week we are putting on Netball-4-RAG, which is where we have several teams full of different sports players where they play lots of netball against one another. There are teams for football, rugby and basketball, so it’ll be fun to see how each team plays especially with rules that they will not be familiar with. It is a fun evening that helps to raise money for the RAG charities that we have this year. Netball has had such a great turnout this year, with many new freshers and lots of returners coming to the first few weeks of training. We have got a new coach this year, Louise, and we are excited to see what new training ideas she comes up with! Training each week has had around 30 people turn up, even when we’ve been training in the rain! During training we focus on different skills; these skills change each week. So far 1sts and 2nds have had a good start to the season playing 2 games each, with 1st winning their second game against Kent and 2nds winning their first game against Brunel. Most of these games have been high scoring and really fun to watch, especially when the scores have been close by 1 or 2 points. We are hoping for a few games between 3rds and dev’s to happen so that they can have some game time, whilst 1sts and 2nds have a break from games this week.

BNU Swans
The Bucks Student By Zaphron Harper, Raffy, Amy, Ellie
BNU Swans Hi everyone! The 2021/22 season is finally well under way, and we cannot wait for what this year has to hold! We have had our try-outs and our teams are almost complete, we still have a few spaces left on our Pom and jazz teams, please message @bnuswanscheersquad on Instagram if you’re interested! We have already had multiple socials this year with funny themes and high turnouts. After a difficult year of Covid restrictions, getting back to cheerleading has been amazing. A lot of our past members have graduated leaving the Swans with plenty of space for new talent! We’ve had so many amazing new members who are happy to give everything a go at such a high standard as well as getting involved outside of training with socials and volunteering. We’ve asked some of our new and returning swans to say a few words about how they’ve been finding the year so far...
“So far, my time with the BNU Swans has been AMAZING! I met Zaph and Beth during freshers fair and they both have been very supportive, which made me enthusiastic to join. During the taster sessions I witnessed how caring the team was, bearing in mind that some of us were beginners. The atmosphere was warm and tight-knit and everyone was putting all their effort in without being conscious of what the others might think. Social life with the Swans has never been dull, we play a variety of games, and nobody ever feels left out. The team really makes us all feel involved and can say with all my heart that I am glad to have joined BNU Swans.” Raffy, BNU Swans Cheerleader
“At first, I was unsure on whether to join BNU Swans as I didn’t have much (or any!) experience, however I am so glad I did because it has been such an amazing opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills! The opportunity to volunteer and help the community is also so rewarding; the squad are some of the loveliest people I’ve met and so supportive! I feel as though I massively improve every week and I can’t wait to start competitions!” Amy, BNU Swans Cheerleader “I joined the committee this academic year as social secretary and can say it is an experience like no other, working alongside other committee members, creating goals and memories for our teams, and striving for success throughout the year. I feel so supported by everyone around me and absolutely loving every moment of being a part of something so special. I am so excited for this year and the plans we have for our athletes and as a club to strive for success!” Ellie, BNU Swans Social Secretary
