A WINTER BREAK MESSAGE FROM YOUR STUDENTS’ UNION
We hope you’ve all had an amazing term so far. Whether it’s been making new friendships, creating unforgettable University memories, or discovering new passions through sport, societies, events, or classes, it’s been wonderful seeing our community thrive. As we wrap up this term, we want to thank you for being part of what makes our Union and University so special.
As the winter break approaches, we know this time of year holds different meanings for everyone. While many may be celebrating the festive season, we understand that for others, this can be a challenging period for a variety of reasons, including feelings of loneliness.
We want to remind you that you’re not alone, your Students’ Union is here for you. While campus may be quieter, some of our team will still be posting on social media throughout the break, offering support, updates, and ways to stay connected.
Wherever you may be during this time, we hope you stay safe, find moments of joy, and take care of yourself. Remember, reaching out is always an option. We’re here to listen and support you.
Wishing you all the best for the season ahead, Your Students’ Union

First Term update
Since stepping into the role of President in July 2024, it has been an incredibly exciting and rewarding journey. The experience has been filled with opportunities to grow, learn, and advocate on behalf of our student community. From developing skills in advocacy and leadership to championing your voices on key issues, representing you has been both a privilege and a challenge I am proud to embrace.
Highlights of the Term
Advocating for Students:
One of the most significant moments this term was visiting Westminster to meet with High Wycombe MP Emma Reynolds. We discussed the pressing student housing crisis and joined the NUS (National Union of Students) in lobbying for critical reforms, including the push for no-guarantor policies. These changes aim to make securing accommodation fairer and more accessible for students.
Promoting Inclusivity:
Amy Pile
President
amy.pile@bnu.ac.uk @buckssupres
Bucks SU Pres BucksSUPres
The sunflower murals at Aylesbury Campus were a heartfelt project that reflected our commitment to inclusivity. They serve as a reminder that our community supports all students, including those with disabilities, ensuring everyone feels welcomed and valued.
Supporting Meaningful Campaigns:
This term has been filled with campaigns that highlight key issues, from World Mental Health Day and Breast Cancer Awareness to Movember, where we focused on men’s health. These initiatives demonstrated the strength of our community when we come together for causes that matter. It’s been great to see the support for our own RAG charity Bucks Mind.
Speaking at the Festival of Higher Education:
I had the privilege of speaking at the Festival of Higher Education, where I joined other individuals in discussing the challenges students face. It was an incredible experience to share our journey, highlight the realities students encounter, and emphasise the importance of continuing these conversations to ensure we are heard and supported.
Engaging with Students:
From podcasts and articles to direct conversations, connecting with you has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. Union Council remains a standout, where students and representatives collaborate to address key issues and plan for a better future together.
Addressing Student Concerns
Your concerns remain a top priority, and this term we’ve made strides in addressing:
• Housing and Accommodation –Advocating for fair conditions and tackling the student housing challenges head-on.
• Teaching Room Resources – Ensuring that students have access to the facilities and tools they need for success.
• Campus Safety – Pushing for improvements such as better lighting, upgraded CCTV, and enhanced security measures.
• Commuting and Parking – Exploring ways to make commuting more accessible and affordable for all students.
Initiatives and Progress
Council Paper:
A detailed paper has been created to showcase the ways in which the Students’ Union supports students through a range of initiatives and close collaboration with the University. Building stronger partnerships between the SU and the University is essential to driving meaningful change and keeping students at the core of every decision. This paper emphasises the importance of ensuring your concerns are heard, highlights who has taken responsibility for addressing them, and outlines the specific actions being implemented.
Student Experience Forum:
This forum has been a platform for addressing student concerns raised directly or through representation routes. Several meetings have taken place, and more are scheduled. After the winter break, we will provide an update on the progress made in tackling the issues that are presented in this forum.
Childcare Provision Paper:
This paper has been shared with some University staff; a working group tasked with developing a detailed proposal for better support for student parents is being established.
Practice in Learner Paper:
Discussed at the Student Experience Forum, this paper focuses on financial support for students on placements, particularly around travel costs. The next step is to finalise the financial details and present the proposal to the University Executive Team (UET).
Committee’s:
As President, attending and chairing key meetings is a vital aspect of the role. These meetings ensure that student voices are represented at the highest level and that decisions align with our goals of improving the student experience.
• Finance and Staffing: Discussions have revolved around resource allocations for student initiatives, staffing developments to support the Union’s operations, and ensuring that resources are utilised effectively to benefit students. We are also in the process of recruiting a new finance manager.
• Strategy and Planning: These sessions focus on shaping the long-term vision of the Students’ Union. We’ve been addressing ways to enhance inclusivity, expand services, and adapt to evolving student needs. We regularly review ongoing and upcoming campaigns, ensuring they are impactful, inclusive, and address the key concerns raised by students.
In my next update, I will provide a deeper insight into some other various committee meetings I attend, detailing their functions and how they contribute to shaping decisions that impact the student experience.
Looking Ahead
Are you interested in stepping into a leadership role and becoming the next elected President? Why not submit your nomination when it opens in December. This position provides a unique opportunity to drive change, represent student interests, and develop key leadership skills that will serve you beyond your time at University. My term in office comes to an end Monday 30 June 2025, if you would like further information you can come and have a chat with me or speak with the representation team.
This term has been an incredible journey, full of learning and collaboration. I am immensely proud of the work we have done together and excited for the opportunities ahead. Thank you for trusting me to lead and advocate for you. Together, we can continue to keep building a more inclusive, and supportive University experience.
Warm regards,
Amy, SU President
Hi everyone! I hope everybody is doing well. It’s been a little while since I’ve done an update like this, and there is quite a lot that has happened this term to note!
Firstly, Well done to you! You’ve made it to December, nearly the end of the first term! To all the new students, I hoped you’ve been enjoying your time here so far. It can be daunting to enter a new chapter of your life, especially if it means moving into a new environment. You have all done so well in navigating the last few months, so give yourself credit!
To all the returners, props to you also! Progressing through the year with your studies as well as social activities can lead to a lot of mental pressure. The fact that you’ve come this far is an accomplishment in itself!
In terms of myself, there are several things that I have been working on that I would like to update you on:
Care Leavers:
Harry Tomlinson
Vice President President Education and Welfare (High Wycombe)
harry.tomlinson@bnu.ac.uk
@buckssuvep_hw Bucks WPEW BucksSUVPEW
Something else I have been working on is a campaign centred around Care Leaver Support. This came about after a student from a care leaver background told me about their experiences within the uni, and how their support provided to them didn’t exactly align with what was advertised, and how there could be room for improvement.
With this feedback I’m aiming to work alongside different departments to better support our care leaver students and am keen to receive any feedback on what we can do to improve the system, so do get in touch!
Movember:
Alongside Wren, I have also been working on our annual Movember campaign, in which we aim to raise as much as we can in support of men’s mental health and testicular cancer. This year we have set certain milestones on the road to the £1,000 target, some of which include Wren dressing up in a cow costume for the day and Amy shaving her head! We have supported the cause by participating in a movember walk, provided free yoga sessions and selling raffle tickets! If you are interesting in donating and supporting the cause, please visit our website to donate!
Harolds Hydration:
First and foremost, there is my ever so wonderful wellness campaign, in which it seeks to inform students about the benefits of proper hydration as well as the negative effects of dehydration. Our amazing Comms team have made some great promotional material for this campaign, and even designed a cute lil mascot (Which would make a great keychain). There has been some great retention from this campaign, and I’ve been doing my upmost to advertise where possible, mainly using a blue morph suit, but it gets the message across! If you want to get involved, its as easy as simply spreading the word!
If you have any queries, as always, feel free to pop me a message. Have a great day!
First Term Round-up
It’s been a busy few months. From planning and running campaigns, to meetings, events and more. I’ve enjoyed stepping in and settling into the role as Vice President Education and Welfare (Uxbridge and Aylesbury). There has been a lot I have been up to, but I’ll try and sum it all up here before we head into the winter break.
Kicking off my term in office I revisited my manifesto. My priorities remain with the release of wellbeing kits, a leadership kit, highlighting the training and development opportunities across campuses, however I have added into this list, attention to the quiet space at the Uxbridge campus. There is a room already in existence, but I am looking into how this could be revamped. I would like student input from this campus about what you think of the current space and if you’d do anything to change it? Please pop into the office at Uxbridge to share your thoughts or email me at: bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk, to share your thoughts as well.
I’ve spent time chatting and speaking to students. Whether this was over a trolley during The Big Move In Weekend, at The Venue at one of the brilliant events,
Bethany Jackson
Vice President President Education and Welfare (Uxbridge and Aylesbury)
bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk
@buckssuvpew_au Bucks VPEW UxAyls
walking across the corridor, joining in an activity or just simply saying Hi. It’s been great being able to speak and chat to you and I appreciate the questions you ask me too, it’s great to hear what you want and how I can support that.
‘Kitting Out Wellbeing’ is the name of the campaign where the wellbeing kits are being released to support. This campaign is focused on promoting the overall wellbeing of individuals. This includes sharing facts, support services, self-help strategies cards, as well including items to support some other self-help strategies. This will focus on providing information about the current national sector for student wellbeing, what students should look out for, what to do and where to get support.
These kits will be launching in the coming weeks. Pop into the SU office at Uxbridge or the SU area at Aylesbury to get your kit. Keep an eye on my Instagram (@buckssuvpew_au) to see when these kits are live.
There is also work on an online safety campaign. This is focused on sharing what are the signs to look for, what to do if
caught out, and tips and tricks to stay to reduce the risks. This will be available in poster and digital formats. If you are interested in online courses around this, please get in contact (bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk) and we can look into this for you.
I have also been working on a revised version of ‘Brandon’s Big Budget Busting Booklet’. During Brandon’s time in office as, both, the Vice President of Education and Welfare [High Wycombe] and President, he made large strides in the efforts around the cost-of-living crisis, one of these was with the ‘Budget Busting Booklet’. I have been working to update this with the new figures and other tips and tricks to help you through the crisis. This will be relaunched as ‘Bucks’ Big Budget Busting Booklet’ (eagle-eyed readers would have seen this in the previous edition as ‘Betty J’s Big Budget Busting Booklet’). Keep your eyes peeled.
Now that I have covered some of what’s to come soon, I wanted to reflect back on a few of the things I’ve done so far.
Black History Month saw the board in Uxbridge display figures in the medical industries. This comprised of a timeline of key dates in black history, influential figures and figures currently working in the industries. Students were able to add to the board figures who they wanted to show case, share, and shout about. This could have included family members, friends or even their tutors. The board also saw additions of other key figures in medical history (such as the person to do blood transfusions) and shared figures in other industries (like Usain Bolt) and also media to learn more (e.g. Hidden Figures). This board was on display on the first floor of the Uxbridge campus opposite the Students’ Union office, however this has now moved to the Ground Floor. This is to allow everyone some more time to read the board. You can still add to the board, the paper is available by the SU office, just drop this into us and we can this for you. I loved hearing from students about the people who inspire you or the books or films you’ve seen and wanted to share with others.
World Mental Health Day saw those who could and wanted to, wear their best yellow and green outfits. This was to show support and raise awareness for individuals with mental health concerns. This day also saw anti-anxiety bracelet making stalls taking place at the Uxbridge and High Wycombe campuses.
Men’s Rugby also supported this by offering a space for students to come and chat. At these stalls we offered information and signposting to services which students could use if they wanted. This day was a success as we encouraged those to talk if they wanted or provided a quiet space to relax and just sit or an activity to focus on as well.
Breast Cancer Awareness saw a range of fundraising activities taking place across all three campuses, ending with a raffle during the Drag Cabaret Pink Part Event. Thank you to everyone who took part and got involved in these activities. I am delighted to say that we raised £252.81 for the Breast Cancer Now charity during this month. We also took part in the Wear It Pink Day where all who wanted to and were able to, wore their best pink outfits. This focused around showing support, raising awareness and the importance of checking your breasts. This information article is still available on the website (bucksstudentsunion.org/news/ article/6013/Breast-Cancer-AwarenessMonth) please feel free to have a read of this, and if you’d like pick up the little booklet of ‘checking your breasts’ from any of the Students’ Union areas across the campuses.
If you participated in any of our fundraising activities, please check your emails to see if you have won a prize and if you haven’t collected this yet.
Amongst the campaign planning and running, I have also attended various training opportunities and meetings. I had the opportunity to attend the NUS Lead and Change in July. This was an opportunity to meet other Elected Officers across the country and discuss and learn about being a leader and how to get the most out of the role. This was a great 3 days spent networking and learning. I’ve taken part in training for Mental Health First aid, Honest Conversations, and Inclusive Recruitment. These courses were great to do and will help support me in the role to support the students.
Regarding meetings, I’ve been getting into the motions of meetings with various members of the Union as well as the University. This has been a range of opportunities to discuss the student experience and how we can support this in making life better for students at Bucks and support you to get the most of out your university experience.
I’ve also been working on the seating issues at the Uxbridge campus. We’ve heard the student feedback and have been following this up with the team at the Uxbridge campus about possible solutions. Please keep us informed if there are any further problems about the seating, but also if you have any feedback about the chairs that are being looked at. These are single chairs with a foldable desk/ table. Please share any feedback to bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk
There has been a lot I have been involved with, and not everything has been covered here but check out my socials to see what I’ve been up to so far this year. There is still much more to come, I don’t plan to step on the breaks anytime soon. If you want to get involved with anything, from campaigns, to events, to representation, to skills, check out the What’s On Page to see what’ coming up or email, message or chat to us to see what you can do!
Volunteer Wellbeing Event and volunteering
Do you want to volunteer?
Did you know here at Bucks Students Union we offer a range of activities to get involved in? You can volunteer at a range of opportunities we have on offer, from planting to river cleans to the classics of a litter pick. There are many ways to be involved.
As a student at Bucks, I was involved in many opportunities organised by the SU and externally as well. I volunteered at the ‘Big Move In Weekend’, supporting school trips and beach cleans just to name a few. I like being able to help where I can support others too. I was fortunate enough to receive the Volunteer of the Year award at the 2024 Union Awards and I’d thought I would share one of the opportunities we have on offer at Bucks.
One opportunity we have is volunteering at One Can Trust. One Can Trust is charity that operates a foodbank in High Wycombe. When volunteering for the charity you’d be picking and packing parcels. These parcels are distributed to vulnerable families and those in need in High Wycombe and surrounding areas.
As part of this volunteering, One Can Trust host a wellbeing event as a thank you to their volunteers. I was luckily enough to have been invited to this event that took place at Adam’s Park in November, alongside the volunteer ambassadors. At this event we met some of the brilliant volunteers and it was great to hear why they volunteer and what they enjoy about it. The team at One Can Trust organised a brilliant event where volunteers could participate in a variety of workshops, like African drumming, yoga, martial arts, wreath making, and singing.
Not only was this event a method to give back to the volunteers but this was also an opportunity to learn more about the One Can Trust charity and the work they do. This was incredibly insightful, and it was great to hear about the work they are achieving from many methods, such as food parcels, social groups, school meals and pet food drives too.
Hearing the volunteers share what they love about their role was inspiring and has also shown more of the skills gained through volunteering.
One Can Trust offer opportunities for volunteers and the SU regularly offer the opportunity to volunteer on a Wednesday, check the What’s On Page to see the next available chance to volunteer with them.
If you want to get involved with anything, check out the What’s On Page to see what’ coming up or email, message or chat to us to see what you can do or email volunteering@bnu.ac.uk if you have any questions.
It doesn't get better than...

Hi everyone. Following our second Union Council of the year on 14th November, here is a summary for those who missed it. We have changed the structure of Union Council to ensure everyone in the room (and Teams!) is engaged. Our free pizza seems to be the talk of the Union Council, and although we all appreciate free food, we decided to have a small break for students to collect their free pizza, and then the meeting can continue. This seems to work better as students stay engaged.
Wycombe Youth Enquiry Service (Y.E.S)
For this Union Council meeting, we invited back alumni and ex-President, Brandon Tester to talk about his new career in Y.E.S, the Youth Enquiry Service. Y.E.S is a registered charity, established in 1982 and is based in Frogmoor in High Wycombe. Y.E.S is made up of seven trustees and a small staff team which consists of volunteers and counsellors. The service provides guidance, information and counselling to young people aged 18-35. The service is available to those living in Wycombe and the surrounding areas. Their focus is to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people and provide them with early intervention. The Y.E.S service is free, confidential, and easy to access. They have recently started a new initiative called the ‘Youth Advisory Board’, which will help plan the strategy and future of the service. The team would like students to get involved in this initiative. To find out more, visit the Y.E.S website - yeswycombe.org Alternatively, you can contact Brandon at brandon.tester@yeswycombe.org.
Elected Officer Updates
The Elected Officers have all been very busy with meetings and campaigns! Here are a few of their highlights.
Amy Pile (President), attended The Festival of Higher Education where she was on a panel, is working on Childcare Provision and Learner Hardship in Practice, is working on a campaign called ‘An Umbrella of Safety’, working with the Advice Centre and Student Hub, is working on an anti-bullying campaign and has an article about giving blood on the website. (amy.pile@bnu.ac.uk)
Wren Sell (Vice President Achievement and Belonging), celebrated Diwali at the Students’ Union, attended EDI Committee and Inclusive Recruitment Training, will be celebrating Movember with a Mo Party at the Students’ Union, spoke about free yoga session at the Gateway Gym, and is working on Student Mixers including: commuting students, students with disabilities, BAME students, postgraduate students and international students. (wren.sell@bnu.ac.uk)
Harry Tomlinson (Vice President Education and Welfare (HW), took part in RAG Week pieing netballers and drenching dancers, is also working on Movember, has officially launched Harold’s Hydration, has started a Care Leaver campaign, and has attended various meetings. (harry.tomlinson@bnu.ac.uk)
Bethany Jackson (Vice President Education and Welfare (Uxb/Ayls), attended Student Leader Training for Student Reps and introduced Rep Bingo, has been working on Breast Cancer Awareness, working with Freshers, bringing RAG to Uxbridge and Aylesbury, and her campaigns on online safety, student wellbeing, and stigmas around mental health. (bethany.jackson@bnu.ac.uk)
Constitution Change
The Union had a vote for a change to the Constitution. As the Students’ Union is a charity, the union is bound by a constitution, for any changes to take place, all members (students) need to be consulted. The change would allow students not part of the September cohort to run in the elections for Elected Officers. The elections are coming up in January, but the current wording of the constitution only allows students starting in September to run in any elections. The university now has many cohorts starting at different times of the year and the SU would like all students to have the opportunity to stand in elections. It was proposed that the wording be changed to ‘you have to be a current officer or student at the time of your nomination
To pass, they needed 66% of the room to vote in favour. The votes were as follows, including online votes: Yes: 75. No: 4, Abstain: 0. With 91 members at the meeting, 82% voted in favour of the change, which will be updated shortly.

• Monthly Monday Meals
• Smile Campaign (UXB): Mon 25 Nov at 12pm
• Christmas Volunteer Week: Mon 2 Dec - Fri 6 Dec

Calling All January Cohort Students ……
2025-26 Student Rep Elections are Coming!
Student representation is essential to ensure all students get the most out of their experience and have the highest quality student experience at BNU.
Student reps are elected by their coursemates to provide a credible student voice to feedback to the University. Student reps can instigate change, minimise miscommunication between staff and students, ensure that assumptions are not made about the university experience, and improve their course for future years. They are elected by their peers to be the voice of their course and are the first point of contact for the students they represent for concerns or positive feedback.
Becoming a student rep is an amazing opportunity to gain skills and experience in several areas and, most importantly, represent the views of your year or cohort. Student reps are rewarded up to £100, gain in-demand skills such as leadership, negotiation and teamwork and make an impact for themselves and their course.
Each year of every course needs a student rep, so why not put yourself forward and ensure your peers have a say in their University experience, all whilst boosting your CV?
You can scan the QR code to find out more about our student representation offer.
Nominations for 2025-26 student reps open on Monday 6 January to Friday 25 January, with voting taking place the following week.

One position is specifically reserved for a student from the Uxbridge or Aylesbury campus, ensuring representation across our student body.
The role is not just about attending meetings; it’s about being an active participant in the decision-making process. Student Trustees have the opportunity to be involved in various committees, as well as regularly providing updates to Union Council and the student body; you’ll be a key communicator and representative of your peers.
Nominations do not open until January, but we would like to invite you to have a chat with a member of the Representation team if you are interested so we can answer any questions and provide you with more information.

Students’ Union Sponsored Art Trip to Birmingham
At the beginning of November, our University’s level 5 fine art students were immersed in Birmingham’s diverse and thriving art scene. These students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to expand their artistic horizons, made possible by the Student Union covering their train tickets from High Wycombe to Birmingham. This exciting trip was organized by Prof. Nela Milic, the unit leader for the Participatory and Socially Engaged Practices module, to provide students with valuable experience beyond the classroom.
On the day of the trip, students gathered at High Wycombe to travel together to Digbeth, Birmingham, the site of Prof. Milic’s residency containing an immersive workshop Exploring Memory, Conflict, and Community at Centrala Space (centrala-space.org.uk). Centrala is a vibrant cultural centre dedicated to fostering inclusion and well-being for Central and Eastern European communities in England through art and culture. The workshop formed part of Prof. Milic’s art residency, the last output of the Hybrid Landscapes project.
Upon arrival at this inspiring venue, students immediately stepped into an English class in progress, taught to local
residents. Laughter and lively conversation echoed throughout the building, setting a welcoming tone. They were met with vivid impressions of art, community, and creativity, with bright interiors, a cozy café corner, and an airy upstairs gallery—all complemented by a warm welcome and coffee from their hostesses, Wioletta and Paulina. With help from staff and students, the workshop space was prepared with tables, chairs, art supplies, and refreshments for attendees.
To open the workshop, Prof. Milic introduced attendees to one another and gave a brief tour of the art installations in the workshop space. The purpose of the students’ involvement was to engage with attendees in informal, conversational ways to encourage artistic expression.
The primary materials included personally significant objects brought by attendees and strips of film tape, symbolizing memory, the past, and sometimes unresolved trauma.
For two hours, heartfelt conversations unfolded between students and community members. Art-making took place amid friendly exchanges, with attendees decorating cherished photos, creating memory boxes, and sewing film strips onto sentimental objects.
Memorable moments included conversations about family memories, the joys of parenthood, and attendees’ excitement at dressing up for this special event. At the workshop’s end, everyone shared their creations with the group.
Reflecting in class the following week, students expressed gratitude for participating in the workshop and appreciated the opportunity. They engaged firsthand with module themes like the ethics of community art, the impact of participatory art, and the role of artists in socially engaged work, enhancing their understanding of these important topics.
The day allowed students to learn about socially engaged art through hands-on experience while connecting with locals in a warm, inclusive environment. Reflecting on the trip, one student shared,
“I am so grateful to the Student Union for sponsoring this art trip for me as I learned so much about how socially engaged art works on a practical level. I had a fun morning of art making and meeting new people from diverse cultural backgrounds.”

From Learning to Earning: Your Journey Starts Here
STRIVE is our yearly employability festival, which aims to provide Networking opportunities, Skills sessions, Q&A sessions, Panels and Workshops. It is never too early for students to start thinking about their career whether they’re in their first or final year.
Last year was our best-attended year and we aim to make this year even better!
We have already packed out the timetable, with sessions still being added. We are very invested in the growth and development of students, and hosting this employability festival is key to students’ development. This aids students after university, as they will have gained various skills to use in job applications, interviews and networking.
Our networking event has employers from many different industries, which allows students to gain relevant information about how to get a job with them.
The rest of the week is full of workshops with professionals, who can provide key skills for working after university, Panels and Q&A’s with alumni, where they can showcase real-life experiences, we are also hosting Rep Con this year so there are many other opportunities for Student Reps.
We will be issuing the full timetable of sessions after the winter break, so please keep an eye out for this. We look forward to finalising our timetable and sharing all the sessions with you.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us on sutraining@bnu.ac.uk

RAG - WEEK 1
Last week was a blast, we began with a human fruit machine harnessing the power of the casino and ended with an awesome Encanto-themed scavenger hunt and spin the wheel. Thank you to everyone who participated or donated, you don’t understand how much we can do
to
help those
in
need, and
rest
assured your donations will go a long way to support the people who use the Wycombe Mind services.
Georgia Haynes:
I loved getting to see our Students’ Union staff kick the week off with good vibes as they took to hosting an event both Keleigh and I found hilarious, it was nostalgic as well as it reminded me of my days in primary school at the summer fairs. I then joined in supporting rugby and netball in their pie a rugby/netball player for RAG which was enjoyed thoroughly by those on either side of the pies.
We then managed to sell out all our donuts before 2pm on Wednesday with a whole box going to Bucks WFC. Netball4RAG was another success story, I began on the door and joined MT soc and filled in spaces for another team. I then joined the infamous Spin the Wheel and even took part in the scavenger hunt myself, It was a blast getting to explore the university through this themed event. Thank you to all the volunteers and fresher helpers supporting us throughout this busy week and thank you to the SU team for helping us make this week what it was, we couldn’t have done it without you, literally.
Keleigh Brady:
The build up to this week has been stressful for us as ambassadors as well as the SU staff, however it was definitely worth it! The week has been full of fun and laughter from everyone involved. Taking part last year was enjoyable but organising it this year was more rewarding and exciting. My favourite part of this RAG week was definitely Netball4RAG, playing netball is one of my sports, but also being able to dress up as a Leprechaun was a blast!
A huge thank you to all the volunteers and anyone else who has made this week possible. As well as a mega thank you to anyone who took part and donated as this all goes towards Wycombe Minds, a great charity who I am glad we are helping and raising money for this year!!
For anyone looking to volunteer going forward or if you would like to raise any RAG ideas as always look for Georgia or Keleigh, speak to Kelly or Jess in the Students’ Union, follow our socials on Instagram and TikTok (bucksragambassador), or follow the SU socials (buckssu, bucksstudentactivities), or equally find any upcoming events on the What’s On Page.
We’ll leave you now with some memories from our most recent Netball4RAG…

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!
This year our sustainability campaign is Waste Not, Want Not! This is the campaign for Waste management.
Collaborating with Gather & Gather we will be promoting the use of the recycling bins on campus. Both Beeches and The Lounge have multiple recycling bins.
There are new food waste specific bins in our cafes and bars. These bins are just for any leftover food that will be put into compactors to make compost to fertilise flowers and vegetables.
Did you know?
We will be asking our students if they use the food waste bins, promoting the bins across the campus and accommodation.
We will have students showing what waste should go into specific bins. You will even find us hosting Grundon in the Winter Garden on the Thur 28 Nov to play some games and win prizes. You will see the Green Ambassadors out and about asking students different questions on recycling.
We will then be asking students if they would be more likely to use the specific bins.
Recycling and waste management is just a small way to support climate change in our ever changing world.
If you are passionate about sustainability and would like to run your own campaign, please email:

5 facts of food waste
0.9 million bananas are wasted in UK homes every day.
The tomatoes wasted at home every year have the equivalent greenhouse gas emissions of 51,000 cars.
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
It takes 65 billion litres of water to grow the potatoes we waste at home every year.
The United Nations has set a target of halving world food waste by 2030.
If everyone in the UK stopped wasting food at home for just one day, it would have the same impact on greenhouse gasse as planting half a million trees.
What can you do?
Use your leftovers. Turn last night’s dinner into something delicious for lunch, rather than putting it in the bin.
Try freezing food. Did you know you can freeze eggs, yogurts and cheese? By freezing food it means they can last for longer.
Keep some fruit in the fridge. Apple and some other citrus fruits will last longer in the fridge rather than in our fruit bowl.
By shopping in small local shops or growing your own vegetables this helps to reduce your food miles.

SMILE Our Fairtrade Campagin
We kicked off the SMILE campaign on Monday 18 November 2024. At 7am, 35 students came and collected the Fairtrade bananas, flapjacks and cookies to be handed out.
2,606 smiles were recorded from commuters and people heading to work. They were joined by our elected officers to promote Fairtrade and all the amazing work around ethical trade.
Making people SMILE on a cold November morning is also a great way to boost mental health in not only for the person but our students handing out the Fairtrade products.
Fairtrade is an international movement and in partnership with 2 million farmers and workers, Fairtrade has a vision of a world in which all producers enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfil their potential, and decide on their future.
Fairtrade works with farmers and workers in more than 1,900 producer organisations, across 68 countries, so they can improve their living standards, invest in their communities and businesses, and protect our shared environment.
We achieve this by rallying a global community of millions –farmers and workers, supply chain partners, brands, retailers, shoppers, schools, government – to pay fair prices and uphold fair production standards and practices.
Fair prices provide an immediate lifeline for farmers and workers struggling with low incomes and disadvantaged by global trade.

What is your role as Volunteer Ambassador?
Our Volunteer Ambassadors role is to assist the Student Activities Team in providing volunteering opportunities for students. Collaborating alongside our Sports Clubs, Societies, Student Reps and Student Leaders across all our campuses to increase participation of Volunteering opportunities to boost students’ co-curricular skills, whilst also creating a fun volunteering environment for all students to get involved in our amazing student community.
Meet Adriana!
Meet Ellie!
Hi, my name is Adriana. I am a first-year student in Psychology.
Before coming to BNU, I volunteered for a rabbit rescue and sanctuary. I have also volunteered for Festival Season Wellbeing.
Now at University, you can find me volunteering for One Can Trust and hopefully many other opportunities later.
I want to share my passion for volunteering with you throughout the year.
I am open-minded and looking forward to any suggestions or feedback from you. Let’s make it a good year!
Hiya I’m Ellie, I am a postgraduate student, studying Applied Positive Psychology.
I have been volunteering with Bucks SU since my first year at University, outside of Uni I also volunteer at a variety of theatrical community organisations.
I can quite often be found across the Students’ Union volunteering in a mixture of opportunities. Volunteering has shaped a huge part of my student experience at Bucks, I am delighted to be able to share this with the student community.
I am looking forward to a fantastic 2024-25 of Volunteering. We have lots of exciting upcoming opportunities this year!
Volunteering at Bucks Students’ Union
At Bucks Students’ Union we have loads of Volunteering projects for all students to get involved with, whether this is out and about in the community or around the University and Students’ Union or virtually, there is always plenty of opportunities to get stuck in with! We are always keen to hear from students about what volunteering projects would benefit you, so there is also the option to always suggest new opportunities too!

Meet your Volunteer Ambassador 2024-25
As part of Christmas volunteer week, we will be running a food drive for the One Can Trust, you can drop your donations off at the Students’ Union reception.
The One Can Trust has been a close partner with the Students’ Union for a long time, supporting our students and allowing us into the warehouse to support the growing community in these trying times.
Since 2011, One Can Trust has operated a foodbank based in High Wycombe, serving the town and the wider area of South Buckinghamshire.
We work with local organisations, including Bucks Council and housing associations, to provide weekly food parcels to those who need our help. We have seen a huge increase in requests for
our support over the last few months due to the cost-of-living crisis. In addition to providing food for households who are struggling, we offer advice and support to help families tackle the causes of their financial difficulty.
To receive a parcel, clients need a referral. However, in situations where clients come directly to us and are not already working with one of our referring partners, we can issue an emergency parcel.

SOCIETIES DECEMBER 2024
Hello everyone,
Buckinghamshire New University in collaboration with Bucks Students’ Union are inviting you to join an event aimed at Creative and digital industries but also anyone else, who have an interest in games.
This year we are continuing our approach for the game jam, by joining Global Game Jam (GGJ) event. Where jam participants (students, alumni, staff and externals) will have 48h to create a video or physical game.
On Friday 24 of January at 5pm in Gateway Lecture Theater, GGJ team (us) will show a theme video which will have a key note describing what the games should be built around (example of previous theme is ‘roots’ – where jammers created games based on nature: tree roots, farming- vegetable roots, family etc.)
As the event is only 48 hours it is not a hard commitment for students, and you are not expected to create amazing quality games (although it will be very cool if you manage).
By Vytautas Kravcenka and Harry Knowles
Global Game Jam 2025
Fri 24 Jan 5pm to Sun 26 Jan 5pm
Gateway building High Wycombe
We want to get students from games related courses such as computer games development, 3D game art, animation, virtual effects, but also any other interested and passionate about games. Any level of study is appropriate, you don’t need to have prior experience to join, in fact you will work in groups and learn together, or even simply observe the event and join for the social aspect. Bucks Musical Theatre Society It’s official: Christmas season is upon us!!!
With some of our members there to witness the Christmas lights turn on in town, we began the day by preparing for our festive set on the main stage, we started around 1pm with our set lasting around 15 minutes. Our set consisted of a Christmassy script and a musical medley of classic theatrical and Christmassy songs for all the family. We entered the stage full of energy and Christmassy cheer ready to warm the crowd up for the day ahead, before heading to support our other clubs and societies, starting with cheer and ending with dance. We loved seeing the sets everyone had produced including those from various musicians, dancers, performing arts schools, and other local talent (We especially enjoyed seeing Bluey and Bingo).
Overall, the day was full of emotion, from the stress and nerves preshow to the excitement and joy during the show and the spirit and support for the other acts as the day went on. We kept the spirits high as we joined the celebrations when the button was pressed by the Main Stage Host, Aladdin from Wycombe Swan’s Pantomime Aladdin’, Wycombe Town Mayor, and Bucks County Council Chair.
We had a lovely day growing our talents and passions and making friends and memories for life and hope to continue this trend within the society with our next event at Hughenden Gardens Retirement Village supporting their pantomime cast.
Thank you to all the sponsors and event organisers and those involved in the day’s success, but also to Bucks SU for their continued support to give us opportunities to connect with events like these.
Hope everyone had a very merry day.
