Page 6 – Missed the event itself? Well look no further to re-live AU Dinner! And so, another year comes to a close. As we look off into the sunset and the curtains open on Festiball... we reflect on the year... I think first and foremost, we had some return to normalcy, after a bit of a rollercoaster couple of years - and it’s been great to see so many of you back on campus. With you all back on home turf, we sent Roey home packing as we won Varsity once again. And maybe even more excitingly, we crossed the 100th edition mark with The Bucks Student. And not to end on a sad note, but we also wave goodbye to our excellent editor, Jessy. Thank you very much for your hard work and we look forward to see what you do next! But as one door closes, another opens - and we’re on the look out to expand our editorial team. So if you’re interested in anything to do with the newspaper - be it designing it, writing it, managing it or just creating the sudokus, drop an email to editor@thebucksstudent.com and we’ll take it from there. Sabb update

May edition 106 By Honor Fletcher (she/her), Tash Neal (she/her), Tom Featherstone (he/him)

H1 Honor Fletcher - President

Hello everyone, We hope you are doing well. We can’t believe that we are doing our final update as a Sabbatical Team for the newspaper. This year has flown by and we have had such an incredible experience representing your student voice as a team this year. We have spent a lot of time this year fighting your corner to support you with anything from accommodation issues in halls and raising your voice around Wellbeing concerns to participating in national campaigns to push against the Governments proposed changes to student loan repayment and much more… A massive congratulations to your new Sabbatical Officers Charlotte, Brandon and Jess who will be taking over officially on the 1st of July.

Tom Featherstone – VPSI

In our final update this year we wanted to reflect on our best moments we have had this year.

Honor: My best moment this year has been securing an accommodation office to support students who do not live in halls of residence which is currently being organised. Tash: My best moment this year has to be running our first ever Wellbeing Fair, with over 100 students attending I was so pleased to see students benefitting from learning more about the internal and external services that are available to support their mental health and wellbeing. Tom: My best moment this year has to be Varsity with Bucks holding strong and pushing through in the latter parts of the day to secure a 6-6 draw keeping hold of the Roebuck Trophy for another year. We have loved celebrating Athletic Union Awards with you last week and look forwards to celebrating Union Awards with you next week. Wishing you all the best with your future careers and we hope that you continue to enjoy everything the Big Deal offers as a Union to support your student journey going forwards. From Honor, Tash and Tom x

Editor’s update

The Bucks Student By Jessy Clark (she/her)

Editor’s update I am so honoured to have gotten this opportunity and to have worked alongside Oli Gunson for each and every edition since I began my role. Regretfully there have been a couple of editions I had no choice but to opt out of due to work and university pressures, but I’m so proud to have stuck it out until my final semester. I’d like to thank Oli for his eagerness to give me a place on the team and for understanding when my other commitments got too demanding for me. He has kept this paper afloat long before I stepped aboard! I’d like to thank all of those who take the time to pick up a copy and admire the hard work that all of our contributors have put into their articles and of course the contributors themselves, for always giving the team something to put in between the cover and the Domino’s ad on the back page! I have always found that my favourite part of editing is the chance to keep up on all things Buck’s related, including the new societies and what they’re up to, how our brilliant sports teams are doing and the breath-taking photography that Zuzanna Maja blesses our pages with. Jessy Clark - Student editor

If you would like to get involved with the Newspaper and writer’s newsgroup, you can always drop an email to us at editor@thebucksstudent.com or j_essyclark@hotmail.com. We are also looking to expand our editorial team! So if you have any newspaper experience, or would like to gain some newspaper experience, get in touch with editor@thebucksstudent.com and we’ll take it from there!

Having a student run paper is something I believe every university community deserves, it’s a place for students to share whatever they’d like and broadcast it across the campus for others to read about. It can be a place for debate, conversation and even to rant about something you’ve been aching to get off your chest. One of the things The Bucks Student prides itself on is the fact that it is open to all of that, and more. It isn’t a pamphlet that’s published to look pretty, it’s a zine full of contributions from a diverse range of people who have something they want to share. So, thank you for having me as the face of the paper, and I look forward to seeing who will follow. Jessy Clark

LGBTQ+ officer update

May edition 106 By Claire Sessions (she/her)

LGBTQ+ Hi! For those that don’t know me, I’m Claire , LGBTQ+ Executive Officer with the Students’ Union. Claire Sessions LGBTQ+ executive officer

I am proud of the moves being made towards diversity and inclusion within the SU and wider BNU community and I am looking forward to working on the campaigns and ideas we are taking forward. However, there are some issues affecting students within the LGBTQ+ community and I would like to bring one of those to your attention in this article. All students living in halls come from different backgrounds, religions and beliefs and we encourage everyone to keep this a safe space for all. We have been made aware that some students are feeling uncomfortable about posters for LGBTQ+ related content, posted at the halls, being ripped down. As the LGBTQ+ Officer, I have shared my concerns with the Students’ Union and Accommodation service. I’m pleased that they are now aware of the issue and are keeping an eye on the situation. If anyone notices this happening please reach out to senior residents and help ensure the halls of residence remain a safe and inclusive space. Please consider the impact and consequences of these actions as even something that feels trivial to you, can have a profound negative effect on those around you and that, in this instance, share your accommodation. I know when things like this happen it can cause some anxiety so just wanted to message to say anyone feeling affected by anything related to these events , please feel free to reach out to me at claire.sessions@bucks.ac.uk There are also support services within the University including the Students’ Union Advice Centre: bucksstudentsunion.org/advice, Chaplaincy bucks.ac.uk/ life/student-success-and-support/multi-faith-chaplaincy, and Togetherall: togetherall.com

AU Dinner

The Bucks Student

AU Winners!

As always, the yearly AU Dinner held on Wednesday 4 May was a great success, the Town Hall provided a delicious two course meal before we went on to have the main events of the evening. Our guest speaker Jake Lambert gave a brilliant set joining in with highlights and low points of our sports team’s year. After Jakes speech we went on to the most anticipated part of the evening, the awards! There were many awards up for grabs with a total of 44 nominees. The first award given was for RAG Contributor of the Year. This award is to recognise an individual/club who has gone above and beyond for our two RAG charities. The much-deserved winners of this award were BNU Dance for raising just shy of £2,000 for RAG this year. The next award is to recognise an individual that has shown massive improvement over the last year taking into consideration commitment and dedication to improve their sport - the Most Improved Player of the Year award. The winner was BNU Dance Eva Dzyubenko. Eva has improved amazingly over the past few years, her confidence has grown throughout the year, competing in Ballet and Latin Eva has had a great contribution to the clubs success this year.

Next up was the award for Fresher of the Year. This year, the award went to Ciaran Bond. From his first day Ciaran has been one of the most involved members within the Athletic Union. He stood out off and on the pitch and has gone out of his way to support many different clubs when not playing along with attending all BNU Dance Competition over the country.

Next, we had the award for Coach of the Year. The winner was Samuel Toluwase, Sam has been a role model to the Basketball team on and off the court. His first year coaching has resulted in the men’s basketball team being one of the most successful in years, Sam doesn’t settle for anything shy of excellent and this has really proven with how the team have performed this year. Team of the Year recognises the most successful team based purely on performance. Bucks FC 1st team respectively received the award. They have had a fantastic year, winning their league achieving promotion in a nail-biting race to the end where the last game of the season either team could have won the league! Bucks FC 1’s also reached the semi-final of the BUCS Cup just missing out on a final place.

Bucks Spirit of Sport Award is a new award to recognise those off the pitch, living by the Bucks family ethos showing support to their peers. Alongside this she has taken on a unofficial medic/supportive mum within Rugby, Jess is an asset to Bucks and we look forward to having her around next year!

After a short interval, we continued with the awards and on to Captain of the Year. This award went to Yasin Ehsany for his commitment and dedication to Bucks FC 2’s and Futsal. Mo has won two different leagues with both Football and Futsal creating the best performance in both clubs in several years. The award of Committee Member of the Year was next. Leadership Academy

The Bucks Student By Emily West

Leadership Academy

Now, more than ever, having extra skills recorded on your CV and expanding your network will help you to make your next steps when leaving university. Development activities will be sympathetic to studies; it really is an individual programme designed around you! It will be manageable for students at all levels and a typical programme will include: • One to one sessions to agree your leadership development route and monitor progress. • Workshops focusing on leadership styles and selfawareness. • Accredited training courses specific to your chosen route.

Applications are now open for our next cohort of students to this year’s Leadership Academy! It has never been more important to focus on building up your skills and having a clear set of goals to achieve by the time you leave university to search for your first job. Whether you know exactly what you want to do, or are still deciding, the Leadership Academy can help equip you to give you the best possible advantage when leaving university. The Leadership Academy was developed to recognise the value of developing future leaders early on. It is a bespoke development programme for students to acknowledge their potential by gaining specific skills for routes through the Union into leadership roles. It’s a series of training, courses and opportunities to enhance employability and build leadership traits - all free of charge courtesy of The Big Deal.

• Employability sessions focussing on CV’s, interviews, applications and assessment centres. • Access to networking opportunities through conferences, staff days and external events. • Mentors – we will discuss in the initial meeting whether you could benefit from a mentor. Plus full support of the Students’ Union Development Team through one to one meetings, reflective developmental sessions and assistance with finding your ideal leadership role. Once you have completed the year, you will receive a certificate of completion plus a free Leadership Academy hoodie! But the support will not end there, and we will continue to support you through to your graduation and beyond.

See what previous graduates have to say about why you should apply! “I am incredibly grateful for the flexibility and individual planning that the Leadership Academy does. It makes a huge difference in facilitating those on busy/diverse courses being able to partake. Something that we often can’t do. I will absolutely recommend the Leadership Academy to others and hope to have the opportunity to meet with our incoming first years next year and make them aware of the opportunity. I massively appreciate all the help and support.” “I feel the Leadership academy has really benefitted me and my time at university and I am so glad I pushed myself to do it. It has shown me that my thoughts and how I process things are not negatives but in fact how I can turn it into a positive and use that in a job and working environment. It has opened me up to opportunities and how I can broaden myself to make me a better candidate for a job.. I would highly recommend it to anyone at Bucks Uni.” “The Leadership Academy has given me access to bespoke training courses relevant to my industry. It has also allowed me to take tests to analyse my strengths as an individual, look through and improve my CV, and overall has given me great guidance on how to cope with a busy workload and stay resilient!” You can find further information and apply for the Leadership Academy via the “Jobs and Skills” section of the Bucks Students’ Union website. Bucks Students’ Union is committed to tackling inequality and would particularly welcome applications from black, Asian and minority ethnic students.

EDI survey response

The Bucks Student By Sarah Jackson

EDI survey response Buckinghamshire New University recently requested students to participate in its latest EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) survey and will be sharing the results with the Students’ Union as soon as they are compiled. This is the second EDI survey to be carried out and thank you to all those who participated – your voice about ‘Being You at BNU’ is incredibly important to both the SU and the University in our commitment to tackling inequality and making BNU more inclusive for everyone. The first survey was carried out at the end of term one through feedback to your course reps and the majority of responses were positive; some of the things you appreciate from the Students’ Union are: • Mental health awareness and support • LGBTQ+ activities and events • A diverse range of free societies and events • There is specific representation for different groups • You can communicate and share ideas without discrimination • The mixer events for each student group The SU has considered some of your feedback as areas to improve. Here’s what we’ve done so far in response to your comments: More counselling services available for those struggling with self-image and identity - The SU now have regular updates with the University inclusion team, have advised on the level of resource that we think should be available and will continue to lobby on your behalf to ensure this service is well provided. You can use the Student Issues platform on our website to report any problems with this service. Provide education and share more information about racial inequality – The University are working towards the Race Equality Charter, a nationally recognised framework through which to work to identify and self-reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students. The SU is well represented on this group but if you are a student that would like to be involved in this particular strand of our work, please contact sutraining@bucks.ac.uk.

More accommodating in attitude with regards to personal situations or learning disabilities – Due to data protection, the SU doesn’t directly get information on our members who have challenges with regards to accessibility. Please contact us directly if you don’t feel you are getting the support you need to study effectively – you can do this by emailing su.vpew@ bucks.ac.uk. Education around different genders and sexualities – The LGBTQ+ Executive Officer has increased the level of awareness campaigns around campuses and through our clubs and societies and is always available to answer any questions. You can contact Claire at claire.sessions@bucks.ac.uk. The local community are less welcoming than the Uni community – Through the EDI committees of both the SU and the University, we are building relationships with local agencies, community groups and employers to provide more wider community events and activities including black history celebrations and Pride 2023. If you would like to be part in the planning of these events, please contact sutraining@bucks.ac.uk. Represent the student demographic more appropriately – As part of the procedural review across the summer, the SU will be making changes to how it recruits and retains staff. We will also continue to feedback to and lobby the University when it comes to education of staff and students in matters of inequality. Aylesbury campus should be more considered - The SU now has a staff rota to make sure we are available on campus for our Aylesbury members. Activities in Aylesbury are currently being planned for the remaining weeks of this academic year and will be factored for year also so keep an eye on the What’s On page for full information We will continue, through the Big Deal and working with our team of Executive Officers, to respond to all your feedback and update you again at the beginning of the next academic year.

Mid Semester Survey response

The Bucks Student

Our Mid Semester Off the back of the first Mid Semester Survey this year we have gone through all of the feedback submitted on the Students’ Union questions and have put together the following article to outline the actions that the Students’ Union has taken to respond to the feedback you have provided. We are always keen to hear your feedback and if you do have any suggestions on how we can improve our service then do not hesitate to contact union@bucks. ac.uk with your suggestions which will then be passed onto the relevant team member. Please note that if any of your feedback submitted within the Students’ Union section related to a University department, it will be looked into by the relevant team from the University. We have split the feedback into sections as we received a number of comments within similar areas so please do not worry if you do not see the actual framing of your comment. To begin I wanted give you a quick briefing on what ‘The Big Deal’ is that we offer a Union and how we can support your student journey at BNU. As a Union we recognise that heading off to University is a big step, even if you’re not going very far from home. Our mission is to make life better for students at Bucks and that extends beyond your academic journey. We recognise that University is more than a degree so why not make the most of it? You can find out more about what our Big Deal offers to you for FREE as a student at BNU here. Support comments: “Access to a support network for mature students re-entering education after a significant period of time away, I have seen some resources available but haven’t had response in request for guidance.” “As a part-time student it is a little different. I do not have the time or opportunity to partake in many activities, and my fellow students on our course will be the same.” “Possible run a post graduate social” “As this course is very time intensive so I don’t think the union running events would benefit the students on this course.” “Campaigns in which international students will be able to talk to their seniors”

Our response: Thank you for your feedback. As a Union we have Eight Executive Officers who are in place to raise the profile and represent the voice of students from underrepresented groups. These roles are: BAME, Womens, International, Students with Disabilities, Postgraduate, Part time and Commuting, Mature and LGBTQ+. The Executive Officers all host online Facebook networking groups as well as in person / online termly networking sessions where you can discuss and raise what you would like to see as a member of one of these communities and discuss what the Union can do to support you no matter what mode you study as well as making sure you have access to everything you would benefit from that we provide as a Union even if you don’t have a lot of time. You can find out more information here. “Advice on study sessions and maybe try to even organise study sessions, as a way to help students make friends but help their studies simultaneously.’’ Our response: The Student Learning and Achievement team are able to provide academic support and advice to assist your studies. If you get in contact through SLA@bucks.ac.uk they may be able to put you in touch with other students to enable you to have study sessions with your peers. Alternatively, I would suggest reaching out to your Course Lead who will be able to ask your cohort if they would be interested in collaborating on study sessions as well.

Mid Semester Survey response

May edition 106 By Natasha Neal (she/her)

Survey Response Events and activities comments:

“Online events in a monthly newsletter via email”

“A fun event idea might be a Hawaiian party with flower necklaces and themed drinks”

Our response: Every other Monday from the start of term, an e-shot from the Sabbatical Team goes out to all Full Time Undergraduate students at BNU (HW, Ayls, and UXB). This is the opportunity to let students know about what is going on, promo any upcoming events or campaigns, and get in their inbox with vital information. We also send a monthly e-shot to Part Time and Post Graduate BNU students as well which comes from their respective executive officers with similar content as the student one. If you haven’t been receiving our e-shots then please email union@bucks. ac.uk. We would recommend checking your spam / junk folders first to check they haven’t gone there first. We would also recommend making sure that you have email forwarding set up from your University email to make sure you receive our emails.

Our response: Thank you for this suggestion we have passed it onto our Events team who will look into organising an event of this kind. If you have anymore events suggestions please feel free to email suevents@bucks.ac.uk “I would really enjoy activities being on earlier in the day’’ and “Events that aren’t necessarily for drinking” Our response: Thank you for this suggestion. On our What’s On page we list all the different events and activities we have on thanks to the Big Deal that you can get involved with. “I wish events would take place in Uxbridge and not just Wycombe’’ and “Have events at Aylesbury” Our response: We are always keen to expand the services that we already offer at Uxbridge and Aylesbury campuses and if you could please submit any suggestions you have of what more we could provide at these campuses to union@bucks.ac.uk we can look into arranging these for you. “Surprised and disappointed there is no feminism group” Our response: Even though we have a huge range of societies here at Bucks, we understand and appreciate that we don’t have every society. If it doesn’t exist, why not start it? All you need to do is find 3 people who are interested (one can be yourself) and contact susocieties@bucks.ac.uk. “I wish there was language lessons for students” Our response: I am pleased to say that in the past and this year we have hosted a number of different language sessions including Japanese and Spanish lessons. These have now finished for this year, however if you would like to learn a particular language next year then send an email to sutraining@bucks.ac.uk and we can look into getting this arranged for the next academic year.

Wellbeing and Student Safety comments: “A more effective way to deal with current social issues e.g. sexual assault. It is a huge problem at the moment and women do not feel safe at all. I feel that more needs to be done within the University and there should be ongoing campaigns to help other people similar to myself.” Our response: Thank you for this suggestion. We are currently reviewing our Sexual Harassment procedures and are running a Student Safety Campaign in May. If you have any specific suggestions of what you would like to see the Union doing in this campaign and for wider support for students then please email honor.fletcher@ bucks.ac.uk with any suggestions that you have. Thank you for all of your feedback in the mid semseter survey. If there was an area that you fed back on that we haven’t covered in this article then please feel free to get in touch through emailing union@bucks.ac.uk so that we can look into this for you. Best of luck with the rest of your studies for this year. – Tash Neal

I found a passion for comms and marketing and had multiple opportunities to explore this field including the opportunity to lead on the “More than a bar” campaign. This has allowed me to expand my portfolio, cv and has opened new pathways for me in the future. The graduate internship is a great way to kick start your career and I would recommend it to anyone” - Bianca

Play your part, be cyber smart

PLAY YOUR PART, BE CYBER SMART Don’t let this be you. Here are some things we can do to look after our important information while following good practice guidance:

Protect your identity e usernam

• Stay safe while using social media – Be careful which personal information you post on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. Regularly review your security settings • Fraud/Identity theft – Fake profiles (also called catfishing) are created by using someone’s personal information and photos, in order to pretend to be that person online. False profiles may be used to ‘befriend’ users to obtain their personal information.

Use strong passwords

A Leeds fashion student was ‘catfished’ by her best friend, who had pretended to be her online boyfriend for two years.” - The Sun

• Using separate passwords – Keep separate passwords for your BNU account, your email account, and other accounts you may have such as banking & social media. • Make sure your password is strong – Three random words combined into one password is an effective way to create a strong password that is easy to remember. • Save your passwords in browser – By storing your passwords in a browser you are allowing your browser to remember your password for you and is safer than using weak passwords. • Save your passwords in password manager – In case you have trouble remembering your passwords but want your accounts to be secure, you can use a password manager (or password vault).

Protect against phising • Defend against phishing – Don’t click on attachments, learn to spot phishing emails and other scams. Do not log in to a website after following a link. If uncertain, visit the site separately and verify its legitimacy. • Be wary of unexpected emails, text or chats – You may receive fake emails claiming to be from an organization (that you may trust) and asking you to provide personal information by replying or clicking a link. If you suspect you have received a phishing email you can report this to: report@phishing.gov.uk.

Protect your wellbeing whilst online • Cyberbullying/Online harassment – Bullying that takes place online through a digital device. It can be horrible to experience this type of behaviour online but remember – you DON’T have to put up with it. If you experience bullying or abuse please report this immediately to the University so that emotional support and practical help can be provided: studentwellbeing@bucks.ac.uk 01494 602324. • Balance – It is important to maintain a healthy balance between your online and offline lives so that you can take care of your mental health and well being. Read a book, get some exercise, or take a walk outdoors.

Stay secure by using multi factor authentication (MFA) • MFA – Ensures that only you can access your university and personal accounts. It requires you to provide additional information, such as a code, to authenticate your identity when logging into the University’s IT services. It helps keep hackers from getting into your accounts, even if they know your password.

Keeping your data secure • Safe storage of documents – You can save your work to the University G: drive. This is your own personal space for storing documents, which is regularly backed up. This means you can restore a document if you accidently delete or save over it. • USB sticks – It’s much better not to put data on a USB stick at all. If you must transport data on a USB stick, all the confidential information should be encrypted. USB sticks can easily be lost or forgotten, and if not encrypted, they can then be accessed by anyone who findsthem. • Importance of backups – Backup your information regularly to ensure you always have a recent version. Doing so will let you recover your data more quickly if it is lost or stolen. Set up automatic backups so that your information is regularly saved into cloud storage without you having to remember to do so. • If in doubt, call it out – If you think any of your devices or accounts could have been compromised in any way. You can report this to the IT Service Desk by emailing: IT@bucks.ac.uk or calling 01494 605000.
