Editor’s note, Wednesday 27 May For The Bucks Student lite, the sun is setting on this academic year It has been a wild and unexpected ride, altering the paper to a weekly digital publication. But with the fantastic support of the Bucks Students’ Union staff, it has never felt like a chore creating this weekly update to tide you through these trying times. And we hope that at least some of you were able to look to the paper as a source of entertainment, news and something to do to take your mind off everything for a little while. Now don’t worry, we don’t need any more content for a little while from you - so all you have to do with this edition, is read and enjoy. The Bucks Student will be back though, and we are hoping to breathe a breath of fresh air into it for the next academic year. So we will be looking for an editorial team, as well as people to write articles, distribute the paper, or even help with the design. If you’re interested in any of the above, get in contact with editor@ thebucksstudent.com and we can set something up. But for now, have a great summer and see you all soon.

Sabb update
Last but by no means least… Even though this is the last edition of the newspaper and our last update as your Sabbatical Officers, there is so much still going on at the union that you can get involved with. For example; Our annual Union Awards is tomorrow night at 7.30pm on our Facebook (Bucks Students’ Union), come along, watch and celebrate what a great year it has been! As your President, I would like to say a massive thank you to the staff and students who have helped us throughout the year. We as a team couldn’t have pulled off the campaigns or day to day operations without your support and patience. This year has been one of massive growth for me as I have become more confident and now would happily talk in front of a crowd, to name one.
Thank you all so much for the opportunity to be your VPEW, being elected into this role really felt like a dream! I am so gutted the year ended like this and we couldn’t say goodbye but I know you will all smash the rest of your degrees and the future world of work. And a final message from your VPSI: What a year it has been, some of my personal highlights from the year have been virtual varsity (did I mention we won!!). Our very first strive also went incredibly well and thank you to all the alumni who took part, we are looking forward to seeing what happens next year. I am so proud of the community that we have here at bucks, and how much bucks spirit you have shown during these difficult times as we have moved online and continue to support one another.
Our time as sabbatical officers is coming to an end, we are in awe of all the hard work and dedication you have shown throughout the year. We hope that you will continue to be amazing going forward as you welcome your new sabbatical officers. We wish them the very best of luck and know we are handing over to very capable hands. Tamsin, Natasha and Tom we hope your year is as fun as ours has been. Stay safe and I’m sure we will all be back at some point, so a fond farewell for now.

Rusty’s roundup
Rusty’s roundup From your friendly neighbourhood events team
We wanted to round up this very strange year with a huge thank you from the Students’ Union Events team! We know it wasn’t the end of year that anyone wanted but we know we will come back stronger than ever, and we really hope that current leavers and third years will come back to have one last night out in The Venue. Thank you to all those that have contributed to our success over the last academic year by organising and running their own events, to everyone that’s part of the student staff events team (we couldn’t have made it through this year without you!) and not forgetting all of our members who have attended so many of our events this year – it makes what we do all worth it! We really value your support and can’t wait to start planning all your favourite events ready for next year. We’ve tried our best to keep you entertained over the lockdown period with some new weird and wonderful ideas! Thanks to everyone that has taken part in our social media competitions, virtual club nights and online quizzes. We hope you had as much fun doing them as we did organising them. To everyone that’s submitted something for the paper – keep your eyes peeled as you flick through the pages in this edition. Our final thanks goes out to our external guests, we really value your continued support and we hope to welcome you back through our doors in the near future. Remember no matter how big or small your event idea or vision is we are here to help you make it a reality! Please feel free to get in touch with any event ideas, suggestions and feedback by emailing suevents@bucks.ac.uk. We look forward to seeing everyone back in our busy venue very soon!

Festiball 2020 FAQ Why has Festiball 2020 moved from May to October? Due to the current global pandemic and Government advice around events and public gatherings we have had to move Festiball to Friday 2nd, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October. We didn’t just want to cancel the event, as we know a lot of our members and staff really look forward to the end of year ball so we have worked to ensure that we can still offer the same event just over a different weekend. We hope that by this point all businesses will be back to a more regular routine and we will be able to bring you Festiball 2020.
I am a current third year or 2020 leaver, do I have to pay for an alumni ticket? No. We are communicating with all third years and leavers of 2020 to be able to offer them free entry, as if the event was happening in May.
How do graduates of 2020 get their free ticket for the October dates? There will be a sign-up link generated and communicated to all leavers and third years to enable them to sign up to get free entry to the new dates. Please bear with us while we get this in place.
Will it be the same line up? Obviously with the current climate things are subject to change however, The Students’ Union has worked hard in attempting to get the same acts to re-schedule for the October dates. So far this has gone to plan and all acts that were announced previously will be performing in October.
I have a Sports Alumni Fixture ticket. Are the sports fixtures still happening? Currently, all sports fixtures that were originally booked for Saturday 9 May are being moved to Saturday 3 October. As long as the same amount of ticket holders can attend the new dates the fixtures will still go ahead. We are aware that the sporting calendar will have started for most clubs and there may be restrictions on facilities. Individual sports fixtures are subject to change based around demand, but this will be communicated via social media and email.
Is Freshers’ Fortnight and Freshers’ Ball still going ahead? Festiball and the Freshers period are a large part of our events calendar and a giant part of the student experience. Freshers Fortnight will still be going ahead, with the re-scheduled Festiball dates incorporated into this. We are aiming to run Freshers Ball the following weekend after Festiball. This has never been done before and could be a huge risk but we think that both events create brilliant memories and build lifelong friendships. We would want to work to get both events happening for all of our members benefit.
Are my tickets still valid? All tickets currently purchased for Festiball 2020 will be valid for the new dates. There is no need to contact the ticket agent or us to move them over – this happens automatically. There are still currently Early Bird tickets available so grab a bargain whilst you can!
I can’t make the new dates! Can I get a refund? Yes! We understand that these are un-precedented times, so we have changed our refund policy to allow people to refund their tickets if the new dates don’t work. Please be aware that this offer will be in place until the end of May 2020.
I still have a question – who do I contact? Please email us suevents@bucks.ac.uk and we will be able to answer any query you might have about Festiball.

Student feedback survey
Student Feedback
How are you doing? When we say that, we really want to know. The University and Bucks Students’ Union care about how things are going for you and have lots of things in place to help. But one of the ways we can keep improving during these challenging times is to get your feedback on what Bucks doing well right now and how your student experience could be improved. The University has sent you a link to the second Student Feedback Survey to find out how things have changed since we first moved to remote learning.
Why you should fill it in? That’s easy, your feedback in the last survey has already helped us take action to make things better for Bucks students. By taking part this time you will help us further identify what has improved, what we should carry on doing and what we should be doing better. We will be sharing some of the actions we’ve taken soon. You have until Friday 5 June to fill in the survey which has been emailed to you. Your voice is so important, and we’ll take action on what you tell us, so it will help all Bucks students - now and in the future. Stay safe.

STRIVE Festival update
Wrapping up STRIVE Our Strive festival has wrapped up, but we hope it will be back for more next year... Over the last 2 weeks we hosted the first of what we hope to be our annual Strive Festivals! You spoke and we listened by delivering this festival intended to help increase your employability! In our most recent students’ survey, employability was ranked as the top priority, alongside your course, so we offered targeted workshops in subjects like networking, CV writing and time management, with workshops from guest speakers on confidence and goal setting. We also had a series of local successful leaders and alumni hosting Instagram takeovers available to answer your questions on how to start a career, any tips on their industry and any tips they had for you, our current members.
We are so grateful to all the speakers who hosted their Instagram takeovers and had a great turnout from our students viewing their live sections! From the 6 takeovers we hosted, they have been viewed almost 1,700 times and we hope this was useful and everyone who took part had their questions answered! Originally it had been hoped that this would be an in person event, with a specialist networking event to give students the opportunity to meet local leaders and alumni, but given the circumstances, we hope that those who took part enjoyed this years virtual festival. We want to say a massive thank you to every student who took part as well as Christina, your VPSI, for bringing the idea and putting it into action!
Here is what one of our students had to say about the event this year: “The Strive Festival was extremely useful in providing the right information to enhance my CV, skills and experience. The online workshops were very high quality with the hosts sharing their depth of experience giving you the opportunity to discuss and ask any questions you may have. The variety of workshops on offer were amazing and for me was crucially important as a third-year student in preparing to enter the workplace in such unpredictable times. I would highly recommend for anyone to get involved with this amazing resource.” - Jordan Penning We would love to hear your feedback on the event so that we can fine tune these for next year and hopefully make it even bigger and better for Strive Festival 2021! We are here to support you with any questions over your career or next steps once you finish this semester so please do email us at sutraining@bucks.ac.uk.

Employability tips
Employability tips Communication
Good communication skills will help you across all areas in your life as they are essential in building positive relationships with friends, family and colleagues. They are especially important at work, and this is the reason they are so often listed as an essential requirement on a job description. Top Tips: • Think before you speak, be confident in what you are saying and don’t interrupt the other person speaking • Actively listen to the other person and take time to give a calm and measured response • Avoid using judgemental, defensive or attacking comments and display positive body language • Maintain eye contact in conversations • Keep correspondence professional, concise and to the point and remember to proof read before sending Think before you speak! In any setting, especially a professional setting, it is important to try and think before you speak to make sure the point you are putting forward is rational and not too emotionally charged. You should also remember to trust in what you are saying, be confident that your comments are correct and never be afraid to say you will get back to the speaker with further information if you don’t know the answer to a question. Make sure you don’t interrupt the other person, but if they are getting off point try and find a suitable gap to direct the conversation back to the subject of the meeting.
Active listening: Active listening is a way of not just listening to the words spoken, but paying attention to the behaviour and body language of the speaker as well. It allows you to develop a more accurate understanding of the speaker’s message and a more positive response from the speaker as a result. Avoid using negative language: This may seem obvious, but it is important to avoid using not only judgemental comments, but defensive and attacking comments as well. If someone is speaking aggressively or critically, try to keep calm and respond with clear factual responses that keep on point and address their concerns. Maintain eye contact: It is important to maintain eye contact in conversations for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it you are not looking at someone while they are speaking, it looks like you are not paying attention to what they are saying. If you need to take notes during a meeting, make sure that you explain this to the speaker at the start. While you are speaking, not maintaining eye contact can give the impression of low confidence in what you are saying. Keep professional: When writing emails or other correspondence at work, try and keep your writing professional and adapt to the style of the person you are speaking to. If they use more colloquial language, you can tone down your own language to a degree, but remember to keep it concise and to the point and avoid personal opinions and negative language. Maybe the most important tip to take away from here is to proof read your work! Remember spell check will only protect you from typos, it won’t help if you have put a real word in the wrong context!

Scrumptious scones Ingredients 200g gluten free self-raising flour
If you are coeliac or have an intolerance to gluten then try these gluten free scones. They are best served with some strawberry jam and clotted cream is, of course, optional. It will require a few extra store cupboard ingredients but these are stocked in most supermarkets. • Preheat the oven to 210°C (fan)
35g cold butter
• Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl (flour, caster sugar, baking powder, salt and xanthan gum)
1 egg (plus 1 for glazing)
• Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients and rub it between your fingers until it resembles smallish breadcrumbs
75ml milk
• Whisk together the milk and egg until it is well combined
2 tbsp caster sugar
• Incorporate the wet ingredients in two or three stages and use a large spoon to mix well to combine everything together
1 tsp baking powder
• Once combined, and using your hands, gently pull the dough together and then tip on to a lightly floured surface
1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp xanthan gum
• Using your hands, gently form the dough into a flattened circle – aiming for a thickness of around 3cm. Take your pastry cutters and cut out as many scones as you can from the dough (I use a 68mm cutter and get roughly 4/5 scones). • Reform the remaining dough back into a flattened circle and cut out a few more • Take a baking sheet and line it with baking paper and lay the scones out across the tray • Using a fork, whisk an egg up and brush it across the top of each scone (this is optional and gives the top of the scones a nice glaze) • Bake in the oven for around 8-10 minutes (bigger scones will take slightly longer) and they will be ready when they easily lift off the baking paper • Serve with any form of jam and lashings of clotted cream (save the arguments as to which goes first until at least after consuming the first three...)

Insurance advice
Insurance advice
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have released a consumer guide on Insurance. This article is a snapshot of the advice they are giving. Insurance customers in financial difficulty
What this might mean for you
If you are struggling to afford your insurance payments because of the impact of coronavirus, you should contact your insurer to discuss your options. It is important that you maintain essential insurance cover and don’t leave yourself uninsured.
• You may be able to make no (or reduced) payments for a short period of time
Insurers will have a range of options they may consider appropriate to help you, including: • reviewing your cover based on risk/needs to reduce premiums • premium payment deferrals • waiving administration and cancellation fees • relaxing charges or interest incurred for missed payments • extending cooling off periods • partly refunding premium payments where the whole amount has been paid up front
If you are paying for your insurance policy by monthly instalments and you’re still facing short-term cash flow problems because of coronavirus, contact your insurer, lender or insurance broker and explain your situation. They may review your cover to see if your premiums can be reduced or be able to offer you a freeze on repayments for a short period. If they do not consider a payment freeze to be in your interest, they should offer you other ways of getting temporarily relief. For example: • accepting reduced repayments, or rescheduling the term • waiving missed or late payment fees • permitting a customer to amend their repayment date without any cost
• Your insurance policy cover will continue in this period which means if you need to make a claim on your policy during this period, you should be able to do so • This won’t affect your credit file for the period of the payment freeze or reduced payments. However, if after this period you remain unable to resume normal payments this may be reflected on your credit file • If you can afford to keep up repayments, either in full or a smaller sum, then you should do so. You will be able to request help under these measures at any point during the period up to 18 August 2020.
