President update Hey all, I hope you are all staying safe and well. As its coming to the end of October I hope you had a fabulous Halloween and attended some of the great Halloween events the Students Union put on this year. Just a short update from me this month, I had the pleasure of going to the Brighton Beach clean and attending some of the Sport for Fun activities such as Wakeboarding and kayaking. Tamsin Grainger - President

It’s time to cycle out period poverty. So please, help yourself. - Love from We know that times can be tough and money can be tight at University, but we want to make sure that no one is missing out on their education or University life on account of their period. If you’ve got it all under control, why not consider leaving any spare products for someone else in need? Thanks, we owe you one!

IN THE

I have spent a lot of this month planning campaigns which I cant wait for you all to see, the one that will happen first will be a campaign al about period poverty where we will be providing free sanitary products in as many of the university and SU bathrooms as we believe no human should ever have to feel uncomfortable about their time of the month. Along with this we will be having a Pads & Prosecco evening when you can learn how to me eco reusable pads that you can keep or donate to woman’s aid… all over a free bottle of prosecco per table. Next will be a campaign about hidden disabilities which I am very passionate about, but I will update you more on that next month.

As I am sure you have seen the Students Union has been super busy with the free hot meals, we have been handing out to children. We cannot say thank you enough to everyone that supported us through this time whether that be donating money, volunteering your time or spreading the word we are so so grateful. We originally set out to raise £300 and managed to hit £8150 the last time I checked which is incredible and will all go towards making sure a child never has to go hungry again. Seeing how the Bucks community came together to help those in need makes me so proud to be a part of Bucks.

VPEW update

The Bucks Student By Tash Neal

VPEW update Hello Everyone, Another edition of the Bucks Student already you may ask !? With so much going on throughout October and November these fortnightly editions are great for letting you all know what we are doing and the exciting opportunities that you can get involved in over the weeks ahead.

Tash Neal – VPEW

Wow… I would like to start this edition by saying a massive thank you to all of the 122 of you who took part in the Break The Stigma Quiz. I am so proud to see so many of you getting involved in our quiz. Our social media campaign is now well under way and we hope you have learned something new from the myth and facts information about the different mental health conditions. We also have a newly set up mental health support page on our website with contact details for both our internal and external support organisations. Please don’t forget to use ‘#BucksWellbeingMonth’ in all of your posts as we continue to raise money for a student focused activity with Mind the Mental Health Charity.

A massive thank you also to everyone who has volunteered some time this week to support providing free school meals for children in need during their half term break. You are all helping a fantastic cause and helping so many grateful families. I can’t believe Halloween is only a few days away! I am sad that we won’t be able to have the usual silent disco and scare maze as part of the spooky celebrations. However, we can still all get dressed up and I am sure DJ ONE F will make the Social Bubble House: Halloween Event a night to remember. I will definitely be giving Hocus Pocus a re-watch as part of my Halloween traditions this year. Please don’t forget we are always here to help so please feel free to reach out if you need anything on my socials: Facebook: BucksVPEW Twitter: BucksVPEW Email: natasha.neal@bucks.ac.uk Speak soon,

This month brings an end to our Black History Month celebrations as well. But this is certainly not the end of pushing for a change. We are going to be looking to set up a focus group which is going to talk about the many different ways and ideas that we may be able to change and do things going forward, as well as beginning to lay out the plans for Black Futures Month which is coming in February 2021. If this is something that you would be interested in taking part in and helping with then please email me; tom.featherstone@bucks.ac.uk

Coming up between now and the next paper from me is the start of MOVEMBER! Later, in the paper is a great article written by one of the Movember ambassadors for this year! The Movember Foundation was founded to try and support men through many different health issues, they look at issues from testicular cancer to men’s mental health. (But more to read later in the paper) But it will be great to get as many people as possible growing a Mo and getting involved. Its gutting this year that Halloween won’t be spent in the silent disco with a snakebite in hand and enjoying the night. But there are many different great events on offer as well the last day if the Six Nations. I hope everyone has a great Halloween and Enjoy what ever you get up to!

HOT SCHOOL MEALS FOR ALL. Last week over the October half-term, the Students’ Union opened up their doors to provide free hot meals to all school aged children in response to the Government’s recent vote to not extend the free school meals programme into the holidays. The community response was incredible. We raised over £8,000 through our Just Giving page in just under a week which is an outstanding amount and will all go towards ensuring we can continue to deliver free hot meals to those who need it. The local community were so supportive with their donations and spread the message far and wide so that families were aware that there was support available for them if they are going through difficult times. Our Bucks students and alumni were just as wonderful in rising to the occasion and volunteered their time to come down to campus and serve meals, snacks, and drinks, and to welcome visitors with a friendly smile and point them in the right direction. Our menu for the half-term included Gluten Free pasta, sausages and chips, tomato soup and a selection of fresh fruit and yogurt pots. A local Tesco has also been wonderful and donated pasta, sauce and sausage rolls to make sure we didn’t run out and could provide a meal for everyone. Kieran Langston, a manager at the store, made sure we had everything we could need and donated a £100 gift voucher to spend on food in store.

We also knew that not everyone could make it into the centre of town and thanks to our genrous student volunteers, we were able to take these hot meals out into the community to make the meals as accessible as possible to the families who needed them. We’d also like to say a special thank you to Brian Keers from Impact Food who drove over two hours to drop off storage boxes so that we could keep our meals hot when delivering them. Tamsin Grainger, Bucks Students’ Union President, said, “No child should suffer for something they can’t control, so as a community I am so proud to see that we all came together to make sure that no one goes hungry.” With special thanks to:

Movember

The Bucks Student

By Honor Fletcher

WHAT IS MOVEMBER?

WHAT IS BUCKS DOING?

Movember is an annual event which involves growing a moustache during the month of November. This is to raise awareness of men’s mental health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s suicide. The goal of Movember is to “change the face of men’s mental health.”

Both me and Josh Fake as your Movember ambassadors have planned various events throughout the month of November to raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? If you are an individual that is able to grow a moustache within the mouth of November (this tends to be the guys) then simply create a go fund me page and start sharing this around with friends and family to raise as much money as possible. Notify your Movember ambassadors that you are taking part, so they can support and share your funding page as well. If you can’t grow a moustache you are still very much involved in this movement. Try and be involved with supporting your peers that are taking part and look out for events and fundraisers around the university to get involved in.

Movember ambassador Josh Fake

We would like to encourage as many guys to take part in Movember this year as it is a fun challenge for a really important cause. But also want to encourage as many people to come to our events and take part in the fundraisers we have planned. To stay updated with when these events are, follow our Instagram, Bucks_ movember2020 to see the latest news and events that are in the line-up! We can’t wait to see all your tashes begin to blossom over the next couple of weeks! Stay calm during this time and GROW A MO!

Horror review - Bly Manor

The Bucks Student By Jessy Clark

A ‘perfectly splendid’ ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’ review: A ghost story that takes you down a winding path of twists and turns, full of questions and conspiracy, The Haunting of Bly Manor is another major entry into Mike Flanagan’s growing horrorography. If you’re a horror fanatic as much as I am, or perhaps enjoyed Flanagan’s other works such as Hush, Doctor Sleep or Ouija: Origin of Evil, you’d be pleased to know that his unique style of direction and storytelling doesn’t fall flat in this mini-series. Flanagan is also the mind behind The Haunting of Hill House, the first entry within the Haunting anthology series; Bly Manor is a follow up series making it the second entry but it is worth noting that there are no plot ties to Hill House, aside from reappearing cast members. Nonetheless that doesn’t mean Netflix viewers aren’t expecting thrills alike, especially given its release in time for Halloween.

So, the story takes us to 1987, following Dani Clayton, (Victoria Pedretti) an American teacher applying for the role of an English family’s au pair. During her interview, we meet Henry Wingrave (Henry Thomas) looking to find a replacement after an au pair’s tragic death, to look after his orphaned niece and nephew in their manor in Bly. Dani is soon driving deep into the country with the assistance of Owen (Rahul Kohli), the estate’s chef, who loves making dad puns and seems too perfect to be working in such an isolated and eerie mansion, let alone a desaturated horror. Next we find Hannah (T’Nia Miller), the housekeeper, who is very notably spacey from time to time, sometimes very worryingly as we first see her looming over a well before being snapped back to reality when Dani introduces herself. Brash and blunt is Jamie (Amelia Eve), the gardener; and then there are the children, Flora (Amelie Smith) and Miles (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth).

Not soon after settling in, Dani begins to experience strange occurrences and a grim, unwelcoming history starts to unravel. Keep a look out; In almost every scene from Dani’s point of view there are ghosts in the background! It varies between a full ghost, only a head, hands or a face…

ghost story... What are my thoughts? Well, as much as this series is expected to be a horror, it isn’t quite that- Bly manor focuses on the stories surrounding the distressing grief of the ghosts and apparitions eternally imprisoned at the estate. It’s also much more than that; The Haunting of Bly Manor is very much a love story with a slow build, atmospheric and poignant. That being said, the love story element doesn’t follow just one pair of lovers destined to meet a dark end, but three; and obviously none of them ending well.

The overall plot is dragged out but in a slow deliberate pace; my only complaints of the season surround the first three episodes which I would argue could easily be put into one, but after episode five the pace quickly accelerates and questions begin to form and answer themselves at the same time. The formation of this anthology, Bly Manor’s layout especially, parallels with the confusion American Horror Story pulled me into, throwing background and characters, disbeliefs and intrigue all in at once, before drawing the story together mysteriously right at the end of the season for you to wrap your head around.

If you enjoyed The Haunting of Hill House, Ratched or American Horror Story, The Haunting of Bly Manor is right down your street.

Student survival guide

The Bucks Student By Toluwa wellbeing coach

Student survival guide 3 top tips to survive your year at University This year has been challenging and we have had to adjust very quickly to the ‘new normal’ but if history has shown us anything- it is that as humans we are built to be resilient and each of us has the capacity to thrive even in unprecedented situations. So, let’s dive into 3 hacks to surviving life as a student. 1. Set a goal:

2. Give yourself a break:

3. Have a support system:

The reality is, life is not as it used to be. You are not as you used to be. You can choose to acknowledge it, or not. But this is the reality. So, what I have found useful in these unprecedented times is setting a goal. This could be daily or weekly but what matters is you set a goal. This gives you a purpose for the day, an achievement to celebrate at the end of the day, or quite frankly just having something to do for that day/week, that would have added value to your life. This could be anything from- working out to researching business ideas for that business plan that has been sitting in your mind for months now.

When the lockdown started, I wanted to keep busy. A lot of my events had been cancelled so I had lots more time on my hands. But, the fact is I wanted my days to still be like how it was before the lockdown, so I took on anything and everything at oncejogging, Spanish lessons, painting, puzzling, joined online classes, zoom sessions- yes, you guessed it, it was EXHAUSTING! And the more exhausted I got, the less time I had for what really matteredchecking up on myself, checking up on my family and friends. With everything I had taken on in the space of 14 days, I had forgotten to give myself a break. It’s ok to be more irritated, or more frustrated, or more exhausted at this time. Our minds are adjusting, this IS a different environment for us. So, in sum- if you feel you are doing too much or even doing too little at this time, give yourself a break- go back to the drawing board and ask yourself- “what is the one thing I would really want to get out of this unprecedented situation?” Focus on that - your gut hardly ever lies.

This may seem like an unnecessary tip, but it goes without saying our fears, insecurities and worries hide in darkness and thrives in secrecy. There would be a lot on your mind at this time, find people you trust to talk to and don’t stop talking, don’t stop sharing and don’t stop checking up on your friends. We all need each other at this time if we really want to thrive during and after COVID-19.

The important thing here is you are adding something to your daily routine, which is very helpful in creating a healthy mental wellbeing.

Eau de Distancé Sociale Local students invent creative new social distancing tool! You’re down the shops. You just want to buy dinner for your Saturday night in, but you’re met with a challenge. A sea of COVID-spreading shoppers bashing trolleys and fighting over toilet rolls. What are you going to do? Never fear, Eau de Distance Sociale is here. Presenting ‘Merde’. This is an idea from 2 Bucks New Uni Creative Advertising students, Charlotte (left) and Blue (right). And trust us, no one will want to be anywhere near you with this bad boy on.

For a university brief, we were told that we need to get ourselves famous by creating a product that would get people talking. So we created a perfume that encourages people to respect social distancing - it doesn’t have the most pleasant of smells and therefore guarantees people to give you space! The inspiration came from famous 80s perfume Georgio Beverly Hills which was also known as an ‘airborne toxic event’. Whilst they didn’t intend to create a perfume with a bad smell, we do. Our scents could vary from fish, poop, body odour, etc.

Wear it or spray it in the air... however you choose, it’ll keep the bugs away! Would you try it to keep people at distance? Let us know via Instagram @charlotteandblueads And if you want to look up where the name ‘Merde’ comes from, a little French research will tell you all you need to know.

Race equality at Bucks

By Matthew Rogers

Bucks’ New University’s Race Equality at Bucks: Have your say survey is now live and will run until Friday 30 November. We want to hear your views on studying at Bucks and how you think our University can advance racial equality and address racial discrimination. The survey will take no longer than 10-15 minutes to complete and the survey results will help us to identify key priorities for improvement, as well as highlighting areas of good practice at the University. The survey is completely confidential and your response will be anonymous. The University will donate £150 to be split between the RAG charities The Julius Little Foundation and Florence Nightingale Hospice if 1,000 students complete the survey. You can access the survey at bucks.ac.uk/ recsurveystudent or by scanning the QR code below. You will also be receiving an email with this information. If accessing the survey by smartphone and you have not logged in to Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook) on your phone before, you will need to enter your Bucks email address, which is your studentID@ Bucks.ac.uk, followed by your password.

Get your voice heard and make a difference The survey is part of a wider piece of work to help us understand more about our University’s culture and advance race equality. The results of this survey – and a similar one staff are doing – will be included in our Race Equality Charter application. If successful, the application will be published on our website. The survey is just one of the ways you can be involved. We’ll be communicating regularly to keep you up to date with the race equality work we’re undertaking and seeking your views to inform our future actions. The surveys and our Race Equality Charter application are being overseen by a self-assessment team (SAT) comprised of a diverse group of staff whose role it is to understand issues of racial identity, racial experience and racial inequality. Our SAT will be representative of our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students. Once we have identified areas where we need to improve, our SAT will form a University-wide action plan to address these issues and drive improvements. If you would like to be involved in any of the University’s race equality work, please include your contact details at the end of the survey. Tom Featherstone, Vice President Student Involvement, said: “The Race Equality Charter (REC) survey gives you the opportunity to share your feedback on how you feel within the Bucks and local community. The University have committed to donating £150 if 1,000 students complete the survey, so make sure you complete it!”

Badminton

Badminton Happy Halloween! We’re already into the sixth academic week of the year, so we wanted to give you all a Badminton update! Our Sport for Fun and Training sessions are still amazingly popular, even with the COVID changes, so thank you to everyone who is coming along! We really appreciate everybody being so patient with us while we follow COVID regulations. We’d also like to say a big thank you to those who wore pink to our sessions, for Wear It Pink Week (19th-23rd October) for Breast Cancer Now. They are an incredible charity that make life-changing breast cancer research and care happen, so thank you for everyone’s support! We are reaching close to our full capacity every session and it’s amazing to see everyone having such a great time! If you haven’t been to Sport for Fun before and you’d like to come along, then please join us Thursdays 5-7:30pm and Sundays 1:30-3:30pm. Don’t forget to get to the session as early as you can though, as we’re working on a first-come first-served basis. In terms of Team news, our Captains are very excited, as they will have announced both our Women’s and Men’s Teams by this week! If you’d like to come to Training (Tuesdays 5-7:30pm), then please come to Sport for Fun and speak to either of the Captains. Please be sure you can commit 100% to training and have some experience playing Badminton, whether that be outside the University or at Sport for Fun. Thank you again to everyone for coming to Badminton, we hope to see you soon!

Bucks Men’s Rugby As the tree’s begin to turn and nights get considerably colder and wetter, you would be forgiven for thinking that the rugby season is back … but alas something is missing, something is not quite right. Rugby has been arguably one of the hardest hit sports due to COVID19, making contact and any other tradition rugby experiences either long distant memories or notably absent. However, as a club we are determined to getting through this pandemic with at least some of the game taking centre stage, demonstrating what rugby is all about – supporting each other and having some fun along the way (albeit begrudgingly more sensibly).

Off the pitch the team has also got stuck into the task at hand, volunteering at Marlow Rugby Club painting the entire interior of the clubhouse to celebrate Marlow’s anniversary year and aiding the Free School Meals movement hosted by the university. Although we may be small in number this year, the squad is as determined as ever to helping the local community and aiding the overall RAG total – with preparations well underway for rugby’s take-over event in the near future! (Note to self, organise first committee RAG meeting for take-over…). The squad is also looking forward to the Halloween social at the SU this Thursday for what will be only our second social this year. Costumes are being chosen as we speak, with some initial thoughts being most intriguing and importantly scary – although we keep insisting Brandon doesn’t need a costume for this time of year, the committee looks forward to seeing what will be worn by all. That is all from rugby folks! We look forward to the day where we can play in front of you all again but until then, take care, stay safe and grow a tash for Movember – if you can beat Toby’s facial hair I’ll buy you a pint!

This term has seen training take a different stance from normal play, mainly taking on the form of touch rugby and handling drills. The team have been working hard on getting our core skill back up to scratch after a long time away from the mud and sweat of training and this is improving with every session (even Josh Fake – our captain and scrum half - can vaguely pass a ball to a players vicinity now). Fitness is obviously an underlying factor once again, and through high intensity sessions and many, many drop ball forfeits later, the team are getting back to levels not seen since COVID-19 hit the sport – another promising sign. The squad has also seen the continued progress and inclusion of new players joining our ranks at the start term, from players who have never picked up a pair of rugby boots before, to those that are dab hands and going slightly grey – every aspect of the team is improving; all we need know is an opposition - (insert next game here?!).
