It feels like only yesterday that I booted up the Edition 2 file for the first time, but here we are in Edition 3 already. The Bucks Students’ Union team are hard at work still - and finding the best ways to make life better for students at Bucks, no matter the situation. By now, you will have hopefully seen the events that our wonderful events team are setting up to keep you busy -so keep an eye on this paper for the latest updates of upcoming events. Oh, and we won virtual Varsity! It was great to see you all come through and take part in this slightly altered event. So if you had fun - let us know! And hopefully a short write up can help to take your mind off current events, give you something to do, and to use this time to reflect and move forward. To submit content or discuss ideas, drop an email to; editor@thebucksstudent.com. If you don’t want to contribute, that’s fine too - you can just take half an hour out of your day every Wednesday to see what’s been going on at Bucks Students’ Union.

Sabb update

I must admit that lockdown is getting easier but at the same time I am starting to run out of “original” ideas. Luckily what I’m not running out of is the amazing content that everyone is putting up on their social media.
Fourth week working at home and I think I’m definitely beginning to miss my office.
Well we’re now into the Easter break! Easter is one of my favourite times of the year normally, it’s just starting to get warmer, quality time to spend with friends and family, and not forgetting all the chocolate!
From Tour flashbacks to some crazy “Quarantrims” I can’t stop laughing at my screen and feeling a slight sense of pride of what makes us so Bucks. We’re all taking walks down memory lane and I think it’s fair to say that now more than ever we’re appreciating the little things which we’d otherwise take for granted.
It was a whirlwind right from my bedroom.
God I miss the SU beanbags… hope they’re doing alright.
Last week was quite busy for me, jumping from meetings to meetings to then being virtually at NUS Conference.
You can find out about what myself and the NUS Delegates got up to later in the paper and you could do the same next year through the elections process in the second term. I hope you are all staying safe and are having a lovely Easter break. Make sure you follow Bucks Students Union on Instagram to see what we have in store for you over the coming weeks!
This year will be a little different! However I am hoping to have a relaxing weekend even thought I sadly should be on holiday this week! Oh well things happen… but as I am taking next week off I am going to do some of our online training session the SU is providing to help with future employment as my time at Bucks SU will be over sooner than I had hoped! Hope everyone is staying safe in this time, make sure you are joining in on our quizzes or any activity’s we are putting on to keep you busy!

NUS Conference
Every year there is a national conference which brings sabbatical officers and students together to talk about the major issues facing education and students around the country and abroad. This year was a slightly different NUS (National Union of Students) Conference as it was done virtually. It consisted of two different days of chatting through Zoom or Microsoft Teams to other sabbatical officers and also the NUS officers themselves. Here, the NUS delegates (your very own peers) and I, got to elect the new officers just like you did for the sabbatical roles a few weeks ago. I was unsure about how this would be done due to it being online however, everything ran smoothly and it was very easy to follow. We saw videos from the people who were running to be officers and voted for them on Tuesday 31st March. We then found out who won on the Wednesday 1st April and I believe the NUS has a good team for the up and coming next year. Shortly after this announcement we received the policy documents which needed to
be read and approved for NUS to work through next year. This means that the NUS will now lobby the government for changes in the issues that face students. To name a few these issues ranged from; mental health, climate change and affordability of student housing, to international student support and experience along with the parity in healthcare for all students and apprentices. All these issues are each in themselves very important to the wellbeing of each and every student that enters the higher education system. Therefore, it was very important to read and understand what these policies were fighting for and to make sure I was voting for the right outcome.
because I was unsure about how they would work and if anyone would actually join in. First they put on a zoom party (yes a party over zoom..), which meant there were sabbs or NUS delegates dancing in their rooms to their computer, where 20 others (at least) were having a boogie on the other side of the camera. To me it was extremely funny but also some very good tunes were being played, which made the cringyness all worth it. There was also yoga. This was done in the same way but they had a teacher creating different poses which everyone else followed. I was too busy boogying to the music at the virtual party to see what was going on in that zoom call, but I can imagine it was again a little weird.
NUS Conference wasn’t all paperwork and debates, there were some fun aspects alongside the hard work and reading. I was extremely sceptical of these activities
If you enjoyed this read then why don’t you get involved and go to the next NUS conference in 2021? Hopefully it won’t be virtual and you can experience the debates and parties for real.

My time at Bucks
My time at Bucks
We are talking (remotely!) to all of our Venue staff over the next few weeks and bringing you their run down of what it’s like to work for the Bucks Students’ Union Venue and Events team. This week we hear from Jordan Cooper, one of our long serving Bar Team Leaders. “I started working at Bucks Students’ Union in September 2017, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. The Students’ Union has provided me with all kinds of opportunities, skills and the chance to meet completely new people in an amazing work environment.
Jordan Cooper Bar Team Leader
If you would be interested in working on our bars, within our promotions team, a member of security or as part of our technical crew please check out bucksstudentsunion/workforus or you can get in touch via email; suvenuemanagement@bucks.ac.uk.
I began as just a member of the bar staff team, where I was able to acquire skills in the hospitality industry, through serving food and drink the proper way, communicating with the customers and the bar team, solving any problems that may occur and managing my time within my shifts. Within a few months I was given the opportunity to take the role of team leader and have continued the role until the end of my time at Bucks Students’ Union. By taking the role as team leader, it has offered me even more opportunities and chances to progress my skills in numerous ways, such as; managing a team, delegating jobs, training new staff and solving both customer and staff problems.
Working at the Students’ Union is probably the best job for any student to get, with it having such flexible hours, one of the highest hourly rates for a venue in High Wycombe, only needing to do one shift per week and the fact that all the staff either are or were students at Bucks New Uni, so everyone understood what each other was going through in terms of studies. By working at the Students’ Union I was able to make a lot of new friends with some of the best personalities you can find, which creates an amazing environment to work in, where you are treated with respect, kindness and patience. One of the top priorities of the Students’ Union is their staff members, whether it’s their progression in the work place, their well-being or their experience at uni, the Students’ Union looks out for their staff in every way they can.”

Crispy Greek pie Ingredients
Once you go Greek (food), you never go back! In honour of our Vice President Student Involvement, this is a vegetarian Greek style main course dish. Great with a green salad.
200g bag of Spinach leaves
• Pre-heat the oven to 180°C / gas mark 4.
175g jar sun dried tomatoes in oil
• Add a couple of tablespoons of water and cook gently until wilted.
100g Feta cheese, crumbled 2 eggs 1
/2 pack of filo pastry
• Put the spinach in a large pan.
• Tip the spinach into a sieve, leave to cool and then squeeze any excess water out. • Roughly chop the spinach and the tomatoes (keep the oil aside) and put it in a bowl with the feta and the eggs. Mix well. • Carefully unroll the filo pastry and keep it under some damp kitchen paper to stop it drying out. • Take a sheet of filo and brush it with the tomato oil. • Drape it oil side down into a 22cm loose-bottomed cake tin so that some of the pastry hangs over the side. • Brush oil on another sheet and place it in the tin, a little further around from the first sheet. • Keep oiling and placing sheets into the tin until you have roughly three or four layers. • Spoon the spinach, egg, tomato and cheese mixture into the tin. • Pull the pastry over the top of the filling so that it is all covered. • Brush the top of the pastry with a little more oil. • Bake the pie for 30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. • Remove from the tin and serve.

LGBT+ officer update
If we cast our minds back to 18th February, LGBT+ Society hosted the first ever Drag Cabaret night, which was a huge fan favourite. The night was included a lot of performances and was headline by Krystal Lubrikunt. If you’re missing your fix and want to see what Krystal is up to now, she’s started regularly posting on her YouTube channel. But this got us thinking, rather than reminiscing about the good old days, what if we compiled a list of LGBT+ content for people to watch while we’re on lockdown in the here and now? My personal recommendation is Sense8 if you haven’t already seen it! Sense8 follows the story of 8 different characters that are all connected, and is brought to you by the same people that directed The Matrix. There is no better time than now to broaden what you watch! ‘One gunshot, one death, one moment out of time that irrevocably links eight minds in disparate parts of the world. Sense8 follows the story of eight strangers across the world who are thrust into each other’s lives, each other’s secrets, and in terrible danger. As they attempt to discover the meaning of their unique connection, a shadowy organization commandeered by an elusive figure known as Whispers aims to hunt them down. Their gift might have made them a target for extermination, but it’s the one thing keeping them alive.’
If you’ve already binged everything on Netflix
New and successful LGBT+ films
• One Day At a Time
• Love Simon
• Special
• Call Me By Your Name
• The Fosters
• Moonlight
• Pose
• The Miseducation of Cameron Post
• Super Drags • Wynonna Earp
Classic LGBT+ films • Pride • Brokeback Mountain • Philadelphia • Boys Don’t Cry

Remote volunteering
The Bucks Student lite edition 3
By Jade Collis
Remote volunteering Do you still have that itch to do more for others? Good! Jade Collis has you covered with different types of volunteering that can be done from the comfort of your own home.
Knitting for Premature Babies Bliss is a charity organisation set up to support babies who were born premature or sick. One way to volunteer with Bliss during this time is to knit for babies in need. Bliss offers a selection of free downloadable patterns for you to use. Before beginning to knit please contact your local Neonatal unit to find out what items they may require. The organisation asks if all completed knits can be sent directly to your local neonatal unit.
Websites There are lots of websites that are in need of volunteers, one in particular is freerice.com. This website asks volunteers to perform simple tasks like quizzes and for every correct answer, you will donate 10 grains of rice for the World Food Programme. PostPals Post Pals is a small charity run solely by volunteers who are dedicated to making seriously ill children and their siblings smile by the sending of cards, letters and little gifts. If you have paper and pens lying around, why not design a card and then pop it in your local post box on your daily exercise allowance walk.
These are only some suggestions of how you can use your time for good! Whatever you chose to do will have a huge impact on someone else so get involved! When volunteering don’t forget to tell us all about it by tagging the union on Instagram and Twitter and logging your volunteering hours! If you want to volunteer or want any help with volunteering or logging of your volunteering hours, please get in contact: volunteering@bucks.ac.uk.
