Editor’s note, Wednesday 22 April Five issues down, and we’re going strong! It feels like only yesterday that I was converting the original Bucks Student document into this bitesize format. But that seems so far away now as I set up The Bucks Student lite document template for the fifth time, and who knows how many more there will be before we are able to return to our printed coutnerpart? But, no matter! We are happy to keep providing you the content and news that you might need to keep you going, or just to give you a break from everything else for half an hour or so! Tired of just reading The Bucks Student? You can write for us! We are accepting all content submissions that you can think of - I’ll even try and find a way to publish a video of you trying the various social media challenges going round if you’re so inclined! To submit content or discuss ideas, you can drop an email to; editor@thebucksstudent.com. If you don’t want to contribute, that’s fine too - you can just take half an hour out of your day every Wednesday to see what’s been going on at Bucks Students’ Union.

Sabb update
Hello hello everyone, Seems like we are writing these all the time at the moment! So we’re now officially into our second phase of lock down as we all know it’s been extended again. I don’t know about you all, but I’m having days feeling so motivated and days where I just want to stay in bed all day... weird how our body and mind works! As Christina and I live together, we’ve been able to go on walks together to the local park. We actually saw some cattle recently and it really made us smile to see something different. I guess it’s the little things now!
Over the weekend I learnt something new. It was Greek Easter and Christina and our housemate Anna-Maria taught me all about their traditions as well as having some really yummy food! It was nice to be able to celebrate something even though they both couldn’t be at home to do so.
We have been in talks with the

Festiball 2020 FAQ Why has Festiball 2020 moved from May to October? Due to the current global pandemic and Government advice around events and public gatherings we have had to move Festiball to Friday 2nd, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October. We didn’t just want to cancel the event, as we know a lot of our members and staff really look forward to the end of year ball so we have worked to ensure that we can still offer the same event just over a different weekend. We hope that by this point all businesses will be back to a more regular routine and we will be able to bring you Festiball 2020.
I am a current third year or 2020 leaver, do I have to pay for an alumni ticket? No. We are communicating with all third years and leavers of 2020 to be able to offer them free entry, as if the event was happening in May.
How do graduates of 2020 get their free ticket for the October dates? There will be a sign-up link generated and communicated to all leavers and third years to enable them to sign up to get free entry to the new dates. Please bear with us while we get this in place.
Will it be the same line up? Obviously with the current climate things are subject to change however, The Students’ Union has worked hard in attempting to get the same acts to re-schedule for the October dates. So far this has gone to plan and all acts that were announced previously will be performing in October.
I have a Sports Alumni Fixture ticket. Are the sports fixtures still happening? Currently, all sports fixtures that were originally booked for Saturday 9 May are being moved to Saturday 3 October. As long as the same amount of ticket holders can attend the new dates the fixtures will still go ahead. We are aware that the sporting calendar will have started for most clubs and there may be restrictions on facilities. Individual sports fixtures are subject to change based around demand, but this will be communicated via social media and email.
Is Freshers’ Fortnight and Freshers’ Ball still going ahead? Festiball and the Freshers period are a large part of our events calendar and a giant part of the student experience. Freshers Fortnight will still be going ahead, with the re-scheduled Festiball dates incorporated into this. We are aiming to run Freshers Ball the following weekend after Festiball. This has never been done before and could be a huge risk but we think that both events create brilliant memories and build lifelong friendships. We would want to work to get both events happening for all of our members benefit.
Are my tickets still valid? All tickets currently purchased for Festiball 2020 will be valid for the new dates. There is no need to contact the ticket agent or us to move them over – this happens automatically. There are still currently Early Bird tickets available so grab a bargain whilst you can!
I can’t make the new dates! Can I get a refund? Yes! We understand that these are un-precedented times, so we have changed our refund policy to allow people to refund their tickets if the new dates don’t work. Please be aware that this offer will be in place until the end of May 2020.
I still have a question – who do I contact? Please email us suevents@bucks.ac.uk and we will be able to answer any query you might have about Festiball.

We are talking (remotely!) to all of our Venue staff over the next few weeks and bringing you their run down of what it’s like to work for the Bucks Students’ Union Venue and Events team. This week we hear about Caitlin’s experiences as a student member of staff. Since leaving University, she has been our Venue Supervisor – a part of the Venue Management team.

“When I first joined the SU during my first year I worked as bar staff, then In September 2019 I joined their security team. The Students Union paid for me to partake on the course I needed to obtain my badge making it possible for me to join the team. This role has been a great experience and also very fun. I have thoroughly enjoying working in a team whilst being my own individual. Being in a team that works well together and bounces off each other to achieve a common goal is something that I am passionate about. The main two things I have learnt while working on the Internal Security team is how to work efficiently under pressure and how to communicate clearly with a wide variety of people.
On the Internal Security team, we are always dealing with a wide variety of people in a multitude of states therefore each situation is unpredictable and staying calm and being a great communicator has helped me be successful in this role. We have to constantly be aware and ready to help when needed, thinking on our feet to get the very best outcome for everyone involved. Within my time working for the Students union I have also gained my fire marshal safety certificate and my emergency first aider badge. The Students Union offers a great range of course that are FREE to students and staff to help further student’s employability.”

Recipe corner
Vegetarian rolls Ingredients 1 packet vegetarian puff pastry 1 packet vegetarian stuffing mix
Greggs might have tried it, but have you? These veggie ‘sausage’ rolls will make you forget that Greggs was ever even a thing! No scales needed, just add as much of the cheese, nuts and garlic as you like. These are also nice with Lancashire or Cheshire cheese, which you can crumble rather than grate. • Set the oven to a medium heat • Put the stuffing mix into a bowl. Add the grated cheese, pine nuts, garlic and walnuts.
Grated cheddar cheese
• Carefully add the water, little by little and stirring all the time. Add less rather than more as the mixture needs to be stiff and sticky.
Fresh chopped garlic
• Cut the pastry in half, roll out one block at a time into a long rectangle about 3mm thick.
Pine nuts
• Put half of the stuffing mixture in a line about a third of the way down from the top of the pastry
Crushed or chopped walnuts
• Brush the bottom edge with milk, then, starting at the top roll the pastry and the filling over. The milk should seal the pastry, but you can crimp it using a fork if you like. You should now have a long roll with the filling in the middle.
2 tbsp of milk 1 medium egg, beaten Hot water
• Repeat with the other half of the pastry and the other half of the filling. • Cut the long rolls into 3cm sections and place these on a lined baking tray with a bit of space between each. • Brush the top of each roll with the beaten egg. • Bake for about 15–20 minutes until golden brown.

Societies update
Societies update How are they coping with lockdown?
Societies have continued to thrive this year. Across the year there has been 32 active societies set up, including a number of new ones from Bhangra, Believer’s Loveworld, First Aid Society and our very own Rusty’s Radio. Despite the current lockdown, an incredible 588 students have engaged in these societies, so a big thank you for that and I hope you have enjoyed being part of a society whilst studying at Bucks. Even though we have not been able to hold sessions in person, this has not stopped our societies from enjoying themselves and engaging their members. Some of our societies are continuing virtually in a number of different ways and below we showcase some of the great work that they are doing. First Aid Society
Green Society
Musical Theatre
During these tough times there has been increased pressure on our NHS. Our First Aid society have been lending a hand, alongside St John’s Ambulance. Five members of the First Aid society have been volunteering in admin roles and also even more impressively, they are being trained to help our frontline staff with Covid-19 patients. It is great to see members of this society benefit from the link with St John’s Ambulance and provide vital help in the current situation.
The lockdown has not stopped Green Society continuing to campaign for a change in culture for a sustainable world. They have been involved in #climatestrikeonline, an initiative set up to continue to support climate change. If you want to get involved all you need to do is upload a picture of yourself holding up a climate strike sign to social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok) using the hashtag #climatestrikeonline.
With social media playing a massive part in recent weeks, Musical Theatre have created their own challenge to get members and others engaged. They have created the Lip Sync challenge which has swept across Instagram. Members were challenged to lip sync to one of their favourite songs and tag others to do the same. A great way of sharing the love of music and keeping in touch with others during lockdown.
Snowsoc
Yoga
Snowsoc have continued to stay connected with each other by holding their usual weekly socials virtually. They have mixed it up by just having general chats and also jumping on the virtual quiz hype. A great idea if you are missing your society friends!
Yoga began the online social media challenges by encouraging members to do a Yoga pose, then tagging their friends to do the same. This was a great thing to do as it gave all members the chance to continue practising their Yoga skills whilst getting some valuable exercise.
Be sure to stay safe and keep tabs on Bucks Students’ Union social media accounts for activities which we have arranged for you to keep you engaged. If you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to drop a message to daniel.lawrence@bucks.ac.uk
