Editor’s note, Wednesday 6 May Looking forward to sunshine and bank holidays . Between desk working, dodging people on daily exercise walks and shopping trips - I’m starting to feel as if this way of living has already become the new norm for me. I have always been the sort of person that enjoys my own company and can entertain myself, but this realisation still struck a chord with me. But after 44 days of offical lockdown, I find myself looking towards the breaks in this new routine that I’ve developed; namely the upcoming bank holidays. I’ve got a few DIY projects planned now that supplies are becoming easier to get hold of, what will you be getting up to and how are you coping? You can let us all know by dropping a quick email to; editor@thebucksstudent.com and who knows, maybe it’ll get published and help someone else out? If you don’t want to contribute, that’s fine too - you can just take half an hour out of your day every Wednesday to see what’s been going on at Bucks Students’ Union.

Hey everyone! So we’re now in week...ah who’s counting anyway. To be honest I feel like for the past two weeks time has absolutely been flying.
Hello, hello, hello!
Hope everyone is all doing okay and keeping busy!
On Tuesday, I did a joint Instagram Live session with AJ from the Bucks Gateway Gym. For those of you that joined you had the chance to laugh at my pushups but most importantly find out about all the amazing online classes the gym is offering. If you missed that and you want to find out more just email fitness@bucks.ac.uk. What was even more exciting was that we released the first categories and their nominees for this year’s Union Awards. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled because your name might just pop up somewhere... Last but not least I’m super excited to get STRIVE Festival up and running next week! From online skills workshops to LIVE Q&As with industry professionals, we’ve got you covered for all things ‘employability’. But that’s just a tiny taster of what will be going on, so be sure to check out page 7.
Another week, another update. Amongst university and union meetings, I have been campaigning for the NHS by asking everyone to draw a blue heart in any way possible. I have been touched and amazed that so many people have already posted on social media or sent myself or ellie.freeman@bucks.ac.uk blue hearts. If you haven’t done one yet, don’t fret! You can still get involved, the campaign doesn’t end for a few weeks. Don’t forget to #ThankYouNHS and tag Bucks Students’ Union. Additionally, there is still the Student Member on Council position available on the SU website if you would like further information then head to: bucksstudentsunion.org/jobs Also if you haven’t seen then we have our first ever Lockdown Union Council! Join us TODAY at 3pm on Zoom – search for lockdown union council on Facebook and the link should be in there!
Strangely enough we have been doing a bit of work this week on our officer handover. I am so excited for the new officers to start learning but feels so weird I probably won’t be back in my little office! This week we had a meeting with our school officers and I just wanted to say a massive thank you to them all. They have worked SO hard this year and particularly in the current time they have all really been a great ear on the ground for us and have all be amazing. If you are interested in being a school officer next year then we have the application on our website and Facebook so please get in touch if you are interested. It’s a great way to represent your peer group. Stay safe everyone!

STRIVE Festival
In our most recent students’ survey, employability was ranked as the top priority for students currently studying. With this in mind, your VPSI has created STRIVE festival! It is never too early to start thinking about your career so whether you are in your first or final year, there will be something at this festival for you. STRIVE festival will run over 2 weeks from Monday 11 – Friday 22 May, with each day containing a different selection of events, all designed to help improve your employability. All content is available online and you can attend from one to all the sessions. We have specialised employability sessions covering topics like CV writing, time management as well as confidence building and goal setting workshops on offer and individual alumni and successful leaders takeovers spread throughout the week so there is something for everyone!
Successful leaders’ Q & A Our successful leaders’ Q & As will be done via instagram as a takeover and will be an opportunity for local successful leaders to talk about their experience and career as well as giving students tips and advice on how to “make it” in the business world. Alumni Q & A Our alumni Q & As will run in a similar format but tell closer to home success stories from our graduates, again from a range of industries, giving tips and advice on how to succeed after graduating from university.
If you sign up to any part of this festival, we will email you offering to source a contact within your chosen industry. This will be your opportunity to network with someone already working in your chosen, or a similar field and ask any questions you may have. All of this is available online and all events can be signed up to on our What’s on page of the Students’ Union webpage. We look forward to seeing you there!

My time at Bucks
My time at Bucks
This week we hear from Zac who has worked with us over several years and in many different roles. Starting out as a member of our bar team, becoming a team leader and then running our daytime bar operation in the Lounge. He is now running our external hire business ‘buckshire.co.uk’ in the Students’ Union office, all whilst completing his studies at University - he has had a glimpse of it all…
Zac Saunderson He’s done everything
“I’m coming to the end of three amazing years at BNU – which makes this an ideal time for reflection. I’ve definitely learnt a lot, which can only be good, and I feel like I’ve grown more as an individual over these three years then I have done at any other time. I won’t lie and say it was all plain sailing, there have been some tough times for me over the last few years – but the strength of the friendships I’ve formed since I started here have been a really big help. The community around Bucks New, from the Students to the Lecturers to the Student’s Union Staff, is welcoming to people from all walks of life. Everyone has been so overwhelmingly positive and friendly since I’ve
started and finding someone to vent frustrations or worries on has never been hard here. University can be quite overwhelming sometimes (there’s a lot of coursework!), and it’s vital that you reach out for help when you know you need it – even if you think it’s embarrassing. The LDU is there for a reason, and I’ve not personally had any lecturer who wasn’t happy to help when things got tough! If I were to tell you that the majority of my time at Bucks was spent in the Student’s Union, you might roll your eyes and say ‘Well of course, you’re a student’ – but there’s a bit more to it than that. Bucks Student’s Union is probably (definitely) the most positive workplace environment that I have ever been a part of. Since I joined up as a member of regular bar staff in my first year, I’ve only experienced encouragement and patience from management and events team alike. The experience I’ve gained in the various rolls I’ve occupied since I started at the SU has been invaluable, and I’ve had such a laugh doing it that I
shall be sad to see the back of that bar. I feel like I’ve gone on for long enough now, but I would like to take a moment to dispense some wisdom to the bright-eyed freshers that will be joining the university later on in the year. First of all, if you decide to live in Brook Street for your first year, don’t spend all your money in Charlie’s – you might need that money for other things (a drink down the SU, for example). Secondly, have fun! Go out with your mates! Your essay will still be there in the morning, and – if you’re not too hung-over – you can do it then! Thirdly, University is a time for self-discovery, and Bucks is the perfect place to do it – make the most of it! Lastly, don’t leave all your coursework until the last second. I know you’ll all do that anyway, but that just means I can say ‘I told you so’. Take it from me (a semi-professional procrastinator), it’s very stressful. Two-thousand words may not seem like a lot, but when you’ve got to do it with the flu at three o’clock in the morning you do start to reassess your priorities…

Recipe corner
The Bucks Student lite edition 7
By Tristan Tipping
Making fresh bread Ingredients 500g strong wholemeal flour 300ml tepid water 15g yeast 1 tbsp sugar 2 tsp salt Jar of black olive tapenade 2 tbsp olive oil
Our CEO, Tristan Tipping, shares his first attempt at baking, and you will ‘knead’ this recipe in your life... • Pile the flour on to a clean surface and make a large well in the centre. Pour half your water into the well, then add your yeast, sugar and salt and stir with a fork. • Slowly, but confidently, bring in the flour from the inside of the well. (You don’t want to break the walls of the well, or the water will go everywhere.) Continue to bring the flour in to the centre until you get a stodgy, porridgey consistency – then add the remaining water. Continue to mix until it’s stodgy again, then you can be more aggressive, bringing in all the flour, making the mix less sticky. Flour your hands and pat and push the dough together with all the remaining flour. • This is where you get stuck in. With a bit of elbow grease, simply push, fold, slap and roll the dough around, over and over, for 4 or 5 minutes until you have a silky and elastic dough. • Flour the top of your dough. Put it in a bowl, cover with cling film, and allow it to prove for about half an hour until doubled in size – ideally in a warm, moist, draught-free place. This will improve the flavour and texture of your dough and it’s always exciting to know that the old yeast has kicked into action. • Once the dough has doubled in size, knock the air out for 30 seconds by bashing it and squashing it. You can now shape it or flavour it as required – folded, filled, tray-baked, whatever – and leave it to prove for a second time for 30 minutes to an hour until it has doubled in size once more. This is the most important part, as the second prove will give it the air that finally ends up being cooked into your bread, giving you the really light, soft texture that we all love in fresh bread. So remember – don’t fiddle with it, just let it do its thing. • Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Very gently place your bread dough on to a flour-dusted baking tray and into the preheated oven. Don’t slam the door or you’ll lose the air that you need. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked and golden brown. You can tell if it’s cooked by tapping its bottom – if it sounds hollow it’s done, if it doesn’t then pop it back in for a little longer. Once cooked, place on a rack and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes – fandabidozi. Feel free to freeze any leftover bread.

Employability tips
Employability tips Time management
In both your university work and when you come to land your job after graduation, it may sometimes seem like there is too much work to do in the time. This is where time management and organisation become incredibly valuable skills and why it is such a popular interview question! We have outlined our top tips in time management to help you through any difficult times: • Top Tips: • Identify what you need to get done and record this however works best for you • Prioritise according to deadline date, it is not always possible to get everything done in one day • Plan time in your diary to eat, sleep and relax and take regular breaks at work to maximise your efficiency • Delegate! Could someone else do it? It’s ok to say ‘no’ if you have too much to do! • If you feel under pressure, tell someone
can only do what you can in a certain amount of time! If something is less urgent, leave it until tomorrow when you can look at it with a fresh pair of eyes. Plan your breaks: If you are working to a schedule, make sure that you have some planned break times to relax and reset, as these will then help you refocus once you are back to work. They are incredibly important for your wellbeing and you should make sure you are including time to prepare and eat your meal, and some time away from your workstation. Delegate: Remember that it is ok to say no to more work if you already have too much! But it is useful to have a suggestion about how else the work could be done, who else could complete it, or which of the other work currently assigned to you could be pushed back or given to someone else in the team. It will show that you recognise the importance of that work to the organisation. Under pressure? Tell someone:
Identify what needs to be done: Everyone will have their own strategy for prioritising, but the first step will often be to record, wherever you find easiest, the work that needs to be done and break it down into manageable pieces of work. It is often useful to record this as a list so that you can then tick things off the list as they get done, as this will make you feel productive and more motivated to complete the next tasks! Prioritise: Another incredibly important part of time management is the ability to prioritise. So when compiling your list of tasks, try and order them according to deadline date or urgency. Identify what’s important and what’s urgent and remember that you
Sometimes it can feel like there is just too much to do and even with all your lists, prioritising and delegation, you feel like you can’t get it done by the deadlines required. In these circumstances you should speak to someone. If there is just too much work you should speak to your line manager who should help you arrange what needs to be done and what can wait. If you have other pressures from either inside or outside the workplace, speak to a friend, family member about how you are feeling and then speak to your line manager about how this is affecting your ability to cope. Some companies also have access to Employee Assistance programs which can offer free impartial advice on a range of issues, not just related to work. As long as you speak to someone, you can find a solution!

Movember ambassador
Movember ambassador Thinking of putting yourself forward for Movember ambassador or don’t know what it is yet but keen to get to know? This article is for you! We hear from our current ambassador, Jade Mather.
Each academic year students apply externally with the organisation Movember, a men’s mental health charity to become the ambassador of the organisation within the University. The Movember ambassador works with the external organisation and collaboratively comes up with original ideas to raise as much money as possible for the charity. The ambassador will be expected to run several events in the month of November to raise awareness of men’s mental health and money. This role is inclusive to everyone and in previous years we have had two ambassadors advocating Movember, if you would like to apply, find out how to below. Jade Mather was this year Movember ambassador. Jade done a fantastic job this year
and raised an amazing amount. We asked Jade why she went for the role and this is what she said: Being the Movember ambassador this year has well and truly been amazing! As well as managing to reach a wide range of students our university managed to raise a huge £1,650 over the month. I can honestly say being involved in this charity was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done and I am greatly thankful for this opportunity that was given to me by the Students Union. My interest all sparked when I had a few male family members die from cancer. I felt that by just getting involved and raising awareness for Movember could really help spread the word and raise money to help this amazing charity support those who are in need. Suicide prevention is often brushed under the carpet and is a very neglected topic. I feel that by coming together with creative events can not only raise money but actually educate those around us about this and how they can help their loved ones who may be suffering with depression.
