Editor’s note, Wednesday 20 May Amongst all this strangeness, the end of term is creeping up on us. And for many of us, the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. Although this term and year may not have gone the way you could ever have expected, I still hope you’re all doing well and enjoyed as much of it as you could. And despite the lockdown still, it seems that a lot of you are learning to make the most of a bad situation and still have fun and communicate via other methods than normal. So what have been the highlights of your term, or year? You can let us all know by dropping an email to; editor@thebucksstudent.com and who knows, maybe it’ll get published and help someone else out? If you don’t want to contribute, that’s fine too - you can just take half an hour out of your day every Wednesday to see what’s been going on at Bucks Students’ Union.

Sabb update
There’s not long left now for our team in office and there is a sense of nostalgia between us. While we’ve been busy preparing our handover for the incoming sabbs we have been taking a few moments to think back to our year...it’s been truly amazing! But we’re not done yet! So much going on and to look forward to! STRIVE festival is well into it’s second week and it has been so inspiring. The alumni and successful leader Instagram takeovers have seen some amazing engagement from past, present
AND prospective students! While our VPSI wasn’t able to bring festival to life in physical form, it’s been a success having everyone network and connect even during this time and share some knowledge that everyone can carry with them.

My time at Bucks
My time at Bucks
We are talking (remotely!) to all of our Venue staff over the next few weeks and bringing you their run down of what it’s like to work for the Bucks Students’ Union Venue and Events team. This week Emily talks about her first few months before we had to close due to COVID-19.
Emily Adkinson Bar staff
If you would be interested in working on our bars, within our promotions team, a member of security or as part of our technical crew please check out bucksstudentsunion/workforus or you can get in touch via email; suvenuemanagement@bucks.ac.uk.
“Hello! I’ve been working as one of the Bar Staff for Student Union for only the past few months (before it was closed of course!) but these short months have really showed me how great working for the Student Union is. I love being able to see new faces of students that I haven’t seen before and going to the events I never would have thought of going outside of work. For example, I now have a newfound love for Glitterbomb and SOAP nights!!
I never really understood how much our Students’ Union does for students and the public alike until I worked for them; everyone who works here are there to ensure you have a great night, from the tasty late-night menu to serving you drinks, security keeping you safe and events team decorating the rooms! Seriously cannot wait to get back to work once everything is open again, to be back with the lovely group of people I work with and serving you guys drinks!”

Problem gambling Am I a problem gambler? During the period of lockdown where you are separated from the normal life that you lead can be difficult. If you have an addiction to gambling this can be tougher as you may be finding it difficult to deal with an addiction that you are either aware of or think that you might have. Where can I get help from?
NHS.uk has a useful list of questions for you to consider about gambling and whether you have a problem with gambling. • Do you bet more than you can afford to lose?
Score 0 for each time you answer “never”
• Do you need to gamble with larger amounts of money to get the same feeling?
Score 1 for each time you answer “sometimes”
• Have you tried to win back money you have lost (chasing losses)? • Have you borrowed money or sold anything to get money to gamble? • Have you wondered whether you have a problem with gambling? • Has your gambling caused you any health problems, including feelings of stress or anxiety? • Have other people criticised your betting or told you that you had a gambling problem (regardless of whether or not you thought it was true)? • Has your gambling caused any financial problems for you or your household? • Have you ever felt guilty about the way you gamble or what happens when you gamble?
Score 2 for each time you answer “most of the time” Score 3 for each time you answer “almost always” If your total score is 8 or higher, you may be a problem gambler.

Gingerbread latte cake Ingredients
A cake with a kick and a strangely Christmas vibe, perfect for a rainy day and to push your baking skills a little! • Preheat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C.
For the sponge
• Grease and line 2 x 20cm (8in) cake tins and set aside.
220g unsalted butter 220g caster sugar
• In a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until pale. Add all the remaining sponge ingredients except the coffee and beat together until well combined. Add half the coffee to the mixture until smooth.
200g self-raising flour
• Divide the mixture between the cake tins and smooth the tops.
1 tsp baking powder
• Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Once baked, cool in the tins for 10 minutes, then remove from the tins and transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
1 tsp vanilla extract
• Once cooled drizzle the remaining coffee over the top of each cake and move to another plate.
4 large eggs
2 tsp Ground ginger 1 tsp Cinnamon 50 ml Strong coffee For the filling and icing
Instant Coffee 1 tsp Boiling Water 250g Unsalted Butter 500g Unrefined Golden Icing Sugar
• Meanwhile, make the buttercream. Dissolve instant coffee in the boiling water and leave to one side to cool. In a separate bowl beat together the softened butter and icing sugar until smooth then beat in the cooled coffee mixture. • Once the sponges are cool, lay one with the topside down on a cake stand and spread with 1/3 of the ganache mixture. • Top with the other sponge, topside up and push down slightly to secure it onto the filling. Ice the top of the cake with the remaining mixture by piling it in the centre and spreading it to the sides of the top sponge. • Serve in large slices.

Employability tips
Employability tips Social media is being used increasingly by all companies not just to promote and advertise their organisation, but to initially screen applicants to check their suitability for a role. That is why on all social media platforms it is important to now manage them appropriately and promote the best possible picture of yourself to your future employer (not just your profile picture!). Top Tips: • Having no profile at all may not be beneficial • Keep your profile professional, updated and relevant • Some people have two accounts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - one social, one professional • Monitor what people share with you or tag you in – stay in control of your profile • When you post, think whether that post could impact you in the future You should have a profile: Some people change their name on platforms like Facebook so that they can’t be found by potential employers. While this may be good advice for posting pictures or opinions you don’t want to share outside your circle of friends, having no identifiable social media presence has been found to be detrimental. You should make sure you have a professional Linked In Account and Instagram or similar for more creative industries to showcase your work and these should be identifiable from your name.
Social media
Keep your information updated:
The platform used will dictate how much of this applies, but the advice for your professional profiles is that the information is updated regularly and relevant to you and your industry. Sharing links to events or vacancies in your organisation will act as free advertising for your organisation and will show commitment to the company you are working in. Think about having two accounts: You may have two accounts on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. In one you could change your profile name so it can’t be identified by future employers, and here you can post (within reason!) what you like. In the other you would have contacts and any available networks and post information thats career relevant and overall more professional. Monitor what you are tagged in: Staying in control of what goes on your social media is a real key to managing how you come across. Make sure you have set your privacy to enable you to review anything before being added to your timeline or equivalent in different platforms. This will mean you can’t get caught out by well meaning friends while jobhunting! Think about the impact of your posts: This does not just apply to pictures from nights out. It is really important to think about any opinions you are sharing on social media. Remember that everyone is different and different things matter to different people and while what you are posting may seem completely reasonable to you, it could create a negative impression of you to your future employer. This especially relates to national events such as Brexit and the current crisis, so just think about the message you are sharing.

How to be kind
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and ‘Kindness’ has been announced as this year’s theme in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Kindness and Mental Health
A kinder society?
Kindness is defined by doing something towards yourself and others, motivated by genuine desire to make a positive difference. We know from the research that kindness and our mental health are deeply connected. The research shows that kindness is an antidote to isolation and creates a sense of belonging. It helps reduce stress, brings a fresh perspective and deepens friendships. Kindness to ourselves can prevent shame from corroding our sense of identity and help boost our self-esteem. Kindness can even improve feelings of confidence and optimism.
We have a once in a generation opportunity not only during but also following this pandemic for a reset and re-think about what kind of society we want to emerge from this crisis.”
Kindness is an act of courage But kindness is an intrinsically risky endeavour. It can risk us looking foolish or being taken advantage of, which is why we sometimes retreat. To receive or to give kindness is an act of courage. We want to use Mental Health Awareness Week to support each other to take that brave step and harness the benefits for both giver and receiver.
So being kind can sometimes feel risky, but it usually ends up being good for both the giver and the receiver. So, if you know someone is struggling with their mental health, be kind. And if you are struggling yourself being kind to others can help you too. Also do not hesitate to ask for help for yourself, there are many resources out there waiting to help you and here are some suggestions of where you can get help: The University Counselling Service - you can email counselling@bucks.ac.uk. The Big White Wall - offers 24/7 online emotional support. Anonymous, community support, resources, and professional help. This service is free to all students at Bucks: bigwhitewall.com
Fika - Bucks has recently partnered with Fika, who have created a dedicated series of programmes allowing students to learn from expert psychologists, other students, academics and professional athletes in five-minute video, audio and text programmes. These programmes are specifically designed to help combat the challenges of remote study and the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Programmes and audio guides cover topics including managing distractions and uncertainty, maintaining motivation and positive thinking, staying connected, self-care and healthy habits. You can download the Fika app from your app store and register using your Bucks email. Fika are running a masterclass this week on The Science of Kindness.

Leadership Academy
Leadership Academy While things may seem uncertain, the outlook for next year is starting to look more positive. So why not apply to be part of our 2020/2021 cohort in the Leadership Academy? The Leadership Academy is a bespoke development programme for talented students to gain specific skills for routes through the Union into leadership roles. It’s a series of training, courses and opportunities to enhance employability and build leadership traits - all free of charge courtesy of The Big Deal. The idea is to provide a truly personalised and candidate led development programme based on your specific requirements and goals. There are many routes into leadership roles within the Union and beyond your University life and depending on your interest or ability, your choice of route may be individual to you. Each route will have tailored development sessions to help you reach your goal. Development activities will be sympathetic to studies, manageable for students at all levels and a typical programme will include: One to one sessions to agree your leadership development route and monitor progress - We will discuss your career aspirations with you, propose and agree a personal development plan with clear objectives and deadlines and review your progress throughout the academic year. We will encourage use of the My Bucks
Career platform and monitor achievement of the Bucks Graduate Attributes. Regular contact through email and telephone calls will enable us to support you in achieving your goals. Face to face meetings can also be held once Government guidance assures us this is safe for you. Workshops focusing on leadership styles and self-awareness - We will deliver formal leadership training which will provide you with workplace critical skills on how to demonstrate values, manage conflict, manage change, understand the difference between management and leadership, identify and encourage high performance and adopt a coaching style. We will be looking to organise these remotely, but as soon as it is possible and appropriate we will provide the option to have these as in person events. Accredited training courses specific to your chosen route - We can provide licensing qualifications and legislation compliant certificates for those in the hospitality industry; safeguarding or coaching qualifications for those in the sports industry; your development programme will be specific to your route and we will source the experience that you need, all of which will appear on your Bucks Award.
Employability sessions focussing on CV’s, interviews, applications and assessment centres - Group sessions in all of the above will be scheduled regularly alongside the University’s Careers and Employability Service. One to one sessions are also available with both the Students’ Union and the University. Access to networking opportunities through conferences, staff days and external events - There may be a national or industry specific conference that we agree will benefit your leadership journey or an employer that you would like us to set up a connection with; You will be invited to be involved with Students’ Union meetings and development days and consulted with when we have new initiatives or policy to implement. You will also receive full support of the Students’ Union Development Team through one to one meetings, reflective developmental sessions and assistance with finding your ideal leadership role. For further information or
to apply to our Leadership Academy please drop an email to sutraining@bucks.ac.uk. We look forward to hearing from you!
