A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ELECTED OFFICERS

The campuses have been buzzing with energy as students dive into an exciting start to the term, filling the spaces with smiles and a lively spirit. From an action-packed RAG Week to awareness events highlighting important causes, there’s been no shortage of opportunities to get involved and make a difference. It’s been wonderful to see so many of you participating, whether attending events, supporting charitable causes, or just enjoying time with friends on campus.

As we move into November, the excitement continues with one main focus: Movember. This month, we’re turning our attention to men’s health, encouraging everyone to get involved, raise awareness, and support each other. We can’t wait to see you join us in championing this important cause.

Let’s keep the momentum going and make this a Movember to remember! As always, feel free to reach out if there’s anything we can do to support you.

President

amy.pile@bnu.ac.uk @buckssupres

The recent lobby day, organised by the NUS, provided a valuable opportunity for all student unions to join forces and amplify our voices on housing issues by lobbying the government collectively. The impact of this unity was clear, as over 50 MPs took the time to meet with us, showing genuine interest in addressing the challenges students face. If you weren’t aware, our membership in the NUS allows us to actively engage in these crucial discussions, ensuring our voice is heard on important issues like housing. Amira, the NUS President, was incredibly welcoming and supportive, emphasising collaboration among unions for greater impact. Looking ahead, it will be exciting to see how the NUS progresses under her leadership, and we are committed to staying involved in these important conversations. We plan to attend future campaign network events and are thrilled that Amira has expressed interest in visiting our students’ union. We’ll continue to keep you updated on all developments.

A Visit to Westminster

Recently, I had the privilege of attending Westminster Parliament, where I joined representatives from various students’ unions in a collaborative effort to lobby the government on the pressing housing issues facing students today. The event brought together voices from across the country, all united in the call for safer, more affordable housing solutions that cater to the unique needs of students and young people.

A key highlight was meeting Emma Reynolds, the elected MP for High Wycombe. During our discussion, I shared a report detailing housing concerns specifically voiced by our students during a recent Union Council meeting. This report, created from the direct experiences and concerns of our students, shines a light on the real challenges they face with housing in High Wycombe, across university accommodations and campuses. You can access the report via this QR code below.

Our conversation sparked ideas for future collaboration, including a potential visit by Emma to our High Wycombe campus. This would provide students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with their MP, discuss the housing challenges they face, and learn more about current initiatives. We also talked about arranging a Westminster tour, which would offer students a first-hand look at the workings of government.

One key topic of our discussion was the Renter’s Reform Bill, a piece of legislation that promises to be transformative for renters, including students. Emma assured us of her commitment to this cause and confirmed that she will be voting in favour of the bill. In response to the concerns raised, Emma expressed her commitment to assisting students who continue to face housing difficulties. She encouraged students facing ongoing struggles to reach out directly to her team at emma.reynolds.mp@parliament.uk saying,

“We will help as best as we can.”

While these initiatives and discussions are promising, it’s important to recognise that change in legislation takes time. However, I’ll be closely monitoring developments and will keep everyone updated as new information and decisions emerge.

Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement on this issue, your voices are what drive these essential conversations forward.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Calender

As we come to the end of the first month of the academic year, it’s a good chance to look back over the past few weeks and start looking forward to everything we have planned over the next year.

Following on from the creation of ‘Bucks SU Celebrates’ last year, we will continue to celebrate national days and celebrations from our EDI Calendar across the coming academic year.

Over October, we celebrated Black History Month with a board in Uxbridge encouraging students to write about Black people who have inspired them, and movie nights suggested by our African and Caribbean Society hosted in The Lounge to educate on Black history. Other sports clubs and societies got involved too, running Black History Month sessions, and hosting sober socials at our movie nights.

We’ve also taken part in national campaigns around World Mental Health Day and Breast Cancer Awareness and supported the Chaplaincy in their Diwali celebration on Tuesday 29th October. It was incredibly well-attended, and I personally really enjoyed it.

On Monday 4 November, we will be hosting our own Diwali celebration which was popular last year and we hope it will be just as fun again this year! There are also plans for other events and celebrations across the year including Eid, Pride and Christmas so keep an eye on our What’s On page for all we have happening!

Scan the QR code to visit What’s On

We have a number of mixers planned for the month of November, the dates of which are listed below, and these are open to all students who identify with the groups. They will all be hosted in the Winter Garden next to Beeches Café and will be a great chance to meet like-minded people over biscuits and drinks.

LGBTQ+ Students

Tuesday 5 November 2pm - 3pm Winter Garden

Commuting Students Mixer

Tuesday 19 November 12pm - 1pm Winter Garden

Women’s Mixer

Thursday 7 November 12pm - 1pm Winter Garden

Students with Disabilities Mixer

Thursday 21 November 12pm - 1pm Winter Garden

Mature Students Mixer

Tuesday 12 November 12pm - 1pm Winter Garden

Students Mixer

Monday 25 November 2pm - 3pm Winter Garden

Part-time students Mixer

Thursday 14 November 12pm - 1pm Winter Garden

Postgraduate student Mixer

Wednesday 27 November 12pm - 1pm Winter Garden

International Student Mixer

Thursday 3 December 12pm - 1pm Winter Garden

Lastly, but certainly not least, November brings with it Movember! Over the next month we will be raising money for the Movember charity who support Men’s health including Mental Health and Testicular and Prostate cancer. We have multiple ways you can get involved in fundraising, whether that’s by donating on our Movember webpage or buying raffle tickets and more!

Look out on the What’s On page for different Movember themed sessions, fundraising and even the Mo Party at the end of the month! If we raise enough, your SU President Amy will even shave her head for the cause!

This is funded and supported by BNU and delivered by Bucks Students’ Union.

When is it?

This is all free to help with the cost-of-living crisis.

What about Uxbridge and Aylesbury?

Pulse and Basin also partake in The Big Bucks Meal Deal - Pulse giving free Breakfast twice a week and Basin free lunch twice a week. This is provided by Gather & Gather, keep an eye out in these cafes for more information.

Spotlight on…

Student Voice Officers

Student Voice Officers work with the Elected Officers and SU staff to make sure the Union continues to operate in the best interests of its members. They represent students from all backgrounds and study areas, lead campaigns to improve the student experience and share feedback with the university on important issues. By joining committees and supporting Union events, these officers help create a welcoming, supportive community for everyone on campus. So, let’s meet some of them!

Hi, I’m Ben! I’m a second-year music production student at Bucks Uni, although I’ve been around for three years, thanks to the foundation course that kick-started my journey. I’m known for being the friendly face that’s always up for a good laugh, offering support, and meeting new people. Whether it’s in the studio or around campus, I love connecting with others and making the most of every moment.

I became a Student Voice Officer because I believe my ability to connect with people on a deeper level really sets me apart. Communication is one of my strengths, and it allows me to engage with students from all walks of life. I’m especially passionate about supporting first-year students, knowing firsthand as a Senior Resident within halls, how tough the transition to university can be. Too often, students’ needs aren’t readily available, and I’m determined to break down those barriers, ensuring no one feels left behind.

Students can come to me with absolutely anything! Whether you’re facing personal challenges, academic concerns, or just need someone to talk to, I’m here to listen and offer advice. I’m also trained in mental health first aid, which has given me valuable insight into supporting those going through tough times. Whatever it is big or small, you don’t have to face it alone, I’m always happy to help.

My goal is to establish my own business that aligns with both my course and long-term career aspirations. I’m also eager to expand my musical abilities by learning a new instrument and making the most of my role as a Student Voice Officer, contributing as effectively as I can.

Hiya I’m Ellie, I am a MSc Applied Positive Psychology Student.

I joined the Student Voice Officer Team to advocate the Student Voice of our underrepresented Student Communities, enhancing their advocacy and inclusion in the Student Experience.

I am always up for a chat with any of our students about the student experience! You can contact me via email, or I can also quite often be found across the Students’ Union at our Campuses so do come and say hello!

This year in the Student Voice Officer role, I would like to achieve campaigns for a variety of our student communities, particularly our Postgraduate Students, Students studying across our campuses of Uxbridge and Aylesbury as well as for students who are studying in Virtual Learning Environments. I also look forward to collaborating alongside the Student Voice Officer Team to represent the student voice across all our different student communities.

Ben Gibbons (he/him) - ben.gibbons@bnu.ac.uk
Ellie Lee (she/her) - ellie.lee@bnu.ac.uk

My name is Eve Matthews, and I’m a 3rd Year in Creative Advertising from Southampton!

I became an SVO because I personally found the transition to Uni really difficult and want to relieve any students from feeling the same stress or loneliness. Also, as a survivor of sexual violence, I am passionate about making sure women at Bucks feel safe and supported as much as possible!

Students can come and speak to me about anything! I am a great listening ear, whether you’re just struggling with the loneliness or stresses of Uni Life, or whether you have something you specifically would like to campaign for.

This year, my goal is to make everyone feel welcome, safe and supported at Bucks. I want everyone to know they are never alone, and always have someone they can speak to or someone to help them make change.

I am a final year MSc. Diagnostic Radiography (Pre-Registration) student at BNU as well as an international student.

Being far from home, I understand the need for resources that support academic success, mental health, and social integration. My own experiences of wanting to feel seen, heard, and supported inspired me to become a Student Voice Officer, where I can advocate for all students and ensure they have the help they need to thrive.

Feel free to come talk to me about any challenges or, if you have great ideas to improve student experience in general, I’m here for you. I’m especially passionate about helping international students, but anyone is welcome to chat with me. My goal is to listen, support, and help make our community even better for everyone.

To contribute to ensuring that the concerns, suggestions, and ideas of our diverse student body are effectively communicated and that inclusive policies are advocated for within the university administration, leading to tangible, positive change.

Hi everyone, I’m Tara-Lee, a second-year Fine Art student at BNU. As a mature student with a rich background in art and design, I know firsthand how overwhelming the university experience can feel, especially in the first year. I had incredible mentors who supported me through that transition, and now, as your Student Voice Officer, I’m excited to pay that forward.

My goal is to be a strong advocate and a listening ear for all students, particularly mature students like myself. I’ve worked extensively with autistic and special needs students in further education, which has strengthened my passion for creating inclusive, supportive environments.

This year, I’m committed to helping you navigate your journey, make the most of university life, and ensure that your voices are heard. Together, we can enhance the student experience and make BNU a more connected and empowering community for everyone.

Sruthi K. Subhash was a very active student and used our services a lot, this can be seen through her Bucks Award. A Bucks Award is a personalised certificate of all the activities, leadership roles, volunteering hours, and anything SU related you can think on collated together!

Thanks to the BIG DEAL all our activities are completely free, this allows student to join all the clubs, societies, activities and skills sessions they may want. Sruthi took advantage of this and filled up her Bucks Award with officer roles, joined the Leadership Academy, became committee members to multiple societies, joined sports clubs, volunteered and joined skills sessions. This saved her an estimated total of £600!

All the co-curricular activities Sruthi took part in pushed her to run for an elected officer, and it paid off as she was our Vice President of Education and Welfare High Wycombe (VPEW HW) for 2023-24. Sruthi did amazingly well in this role all thanks to the skills and experiences she learnt whilst being a student.

If you want to get your Bucks Award, please email us and we will be happy to help!! training@bnu.ac.uk

“Applying to the Leadership Academy was one of the best decisions I made during my university journey. The mentoring has truly transformed me by guiding me and helping me turning my aspirations into reality. From building networks to taking on the role of Sabbatical Officer, the support I received was incredible. Without the leadership academy my university journey wouldn’t have been the same and I wouldn’t have been able to see the better version of me with the guidance of amazing mentorship. Thank you for the incredible impact and amazing guidance leadership Academy has created in me.”

RAISE AND GIVE

Announcement

Every year our members (that’s you) vote for who they want to see chosen as our Raise and give charity of the year. Raise and Give (RAG) is the fundraising part of the Students’ Union where we raise funds for charitable causes that mean a lot to our members, and host specific RAG events for the charity you voted for.

This year your elected charity is Wycombe Mind and we would like to raise as much as we can and support the services Wycombe Mind provide.

Wycombe Mind believe that no one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We work hard to support anyone that needs our help and assistance in the Wycombe district; including High Wycombe, Marlow, and Princes Risborough. We offer peer support groups throughout the week as well as a number of activities from our centre and local venues. We are also involved directly with the community in the various outreach projects we run.

We’ve set a target of £5,000 and know that with the hard work, and fantastic fundraising efforts of our members, we’ll get there. To help get things started, your RAG Ambassadors will be hosting our first RAG Week of the year starting on Monday 28 October and it will be full of fundraising events, including the fanfavourite, Netball 4 RAG.

Whether you have played netball or not, come along to the Events Hall and take part in an evening of fancy dress and netball fun, all in the name of a good cause. It is a £1 per person to enter with all proceeds going to our RAG charity. Entries closing at noon on Wednesday 30 October with the event taking place from 6pm on Thursday 31 October. So, grab your mates, society members, teammates, house mates or your course together for a great evening out.

Throughout the week we will be playing games for you to get involved with.

Human Fruit machine will a big hit with Prizes galore. The lucky dip box is always a bit of fun and of course no RAG week would be complete without Doughnut Day!

Volunteering Roundup

Welcome to your first term back, since starting we have been busy with Antianxiety bracelet making, making Bird feeders to put around the university and of course the ultimate end to Freshers with a Beach Clean to Southend-on-sea. 24 students along with VPEW Harry cleaned the beach for 2 hours and then headed into Southend to see all that Essex has to offer.

Our committees are running sessions and getting involved with all the volunteering on offer. Don’t forget you can get involved by looking at the What’s On page on our Bucks Students’ Union website.

At Bucks Students’ Union we want to make sure you are acknowledged for all your hard work and achievements. We do this by Social media posts, Newspapers, and certificates. We have a scheme for your hours:

These are accumulated over your time at university, so there is no panic about doing 400 hours in a busy year.

If you complete 30 hours volunteering within the community, you can also get our amazing volunteer bundle. This consists of:

Ideas for Fundraising

1. Carnival Games

Games like ring toss, balloon pop, and ping pong ball shoots are fun for all ages. They can also be a cheap way to make money. All you need is a small space and a few small prizes, and you can get some fun carnival games going.

3. Envelope auctions

Envelope auctions are going to take a bit of leg work. Why? Because you need to find items that you can auction off that fit in an envelope, so it’s great to ask local businesses around you to provide vouchers and such for your fundraiser. You can also make it interesting by having one wanted envelope item and all the others filled with decorated hearts or original art. It becomes a contest as people start to bid on the different envelopes.

5. Miles for Money

2. Bike for Bucks

Having people sponsor you to do something is a great way to earn some much-needed funds for a charity or cause. While walking or running events are all over the board, you can try biking for Bucks.

4. Guessing Game

You’ve probably seen a fundraiser where a jar is filled with M&M’s, and you pay to guess the number. Well, you can do this but on a larger and more creative scale.

6. Silent Action

When it comes to raising funds for your college tuition, you can have people sponsor every mile that you walk, run, bike, or hike. You will not only document your miles for everyone to see, but you’re fundraising too.

7. Auction a Promise

Hold an auction night where students bid for promises such as washing up or cooking meals for a month, that is, for a price.

9. Extreme Sport

Sky diving, 3 peaks challenge and bungee jumping will get your adrenaline and funds flowing.

A silent auction is a great way to raise funds for a good cause. You can ask for donations from local businesses or organizations and auction them off to the highest bidder. You can partner with a local charity or cause and donate the proceeds to them.

8. Raffle

Talk to local businesses and see if they may be willing to donate a few prizes to your cause. Then set up a team of volunteers to start selling raffle tickets.

10. Wax It

It’s a classic charity fundraising technique that provides an interesting insight into how much your friends are willing to pay to hear you shout ‘ouch!’. A packet of wax strips (and maybe some aloe vera) is all you need to raise money with a wax off.

The Year Starts Strong!

UWCB Fundraising Event by Petar Barakov

Hello all! We’re back again with another article from Boxing society! As I always like to start of with: Our sessions are on Thursdays meeting at 5:20pm in the Venue (It’s hard to miss us, just look for all the people in gym wear) leaving at around 5:45 to our lovely Wycombe warriors gym!

Sessions consist as always of a bit of boxing fitness coupled with technical training (works extra well when you’re out of breath!) with soon to come (optional) sparring! It’s a lot of fun and if any of that interests you please do get in touch!

We’ve had a few sessions already and I’m glad to say it’s starting off strong with many new members as well as many returning and I’m definitely looking forward what Fight Night will bring.

And with that we’ve come to a close, we’ll see you next month in another one of our articles or at the gym itself!

Speaking of fights and such, one of our own: Petar Barakov! a fight night veteran decided to use that experience for some more good and he’s doing a charity fund raising event for World Vision UK! A humanitarian charity dedicated to working in more than 100 countries assisting children caught in terrible circumstances.

The event is set up by Ultra White Collar Boxing and tickets are available from there website if you wish to go! But you can of course scan the QR code we’ve provided to donate directly if that’s your preference! We here at boxing are nothing but proud of Petar and it’s an honour to see people from our societies going on to do such great things with the skills they’ve learned, so we have our gratitude both for doing such good work as well as bringing pride to our humble society!

Men’s Hockey ON THE RISE

We’re a month into the new year now, and what a start it has been for us! Following an underwhelming year of league results last year, the team have shown massive improvement, both in training and during matches.

We first came up against Imperial’s 6’s at Amersham, winning an incredible 16-0 –surpassing the amount we scored last year already! James, our captain, scored 8 of those, with braces from Jacob and Harry, and goals from Seyi, Jerome, Luke and Ashley capping the win!

We then travelled to Imperial the following week, to take on their 7’s with an impressive team display seeing us win 2-0. Two wins from two, with a couple of clean sheets demonstrating our impressive defence, leaves us joint top at the time of writing, with sights now on a potential push to the top! It will be tough, but there are extremely positive signs!

It was great meeting everyone at Fresher’s Fair last month, and also having a new set of fresher’s joining us, and everybody is settling in well! If you are interested in joining a sports team at Bucks, we would love to have you involved!

We’re a close-knit group, so whether you want to play games and come training, or simply just turn up to the socials, everyone is more than welcome!

In other news from the club, we have our bingo takeover happening at the Venue on Wednesday 20 November, which committee are working hard to plan, and we hope you all enjoy what we have in store!

Welcome to the world of Bucks Women’s Hockey: Where passion meets teamwork on the pitch!

Our players have explored their personal journeys and experiences that shape our club. From thrilling matches to heartfelt moments, here is what our members think:

Monique Powell: “As a Second year joining Hockey, I have settled into the sport with ease finding the committee members welcoming and supportive. Last week I played my first Hockey match of the season where we won 7-0. This was a great start to my Hockey experience as we all had fun, and the team worked very well together as our Captain Amy Frankel had been fair and encouraging of all players. I plan on staying with Hockey, learning to better my skills throughout weekly training sessions and participate in future match play!”

Hayley Kramer: “Up until now I never really got involved in sports or clubs but I decided university would be a great place to try out something new. I thought Hockey would be a cool sport to join but I was really nervous about it, however in the end I’m so glad I did. During my first training the girls were extremely welcoming and helpful to

aid me in my technique. I enjoy a lot of the group training as it makes me feel that I’m part of a great community. I’m thrilled to go to more matches to get more experience and improve on my skills!”

Edrinah Kirabo: “Our team triumphed in a commanding 7-0 victory against King’s College! While the score line suggested a straightforward win, it was anything but easy! King’s College put up a solid fight challenging us throughout the game and making us work for every goal. Despite the hurdles, our team’s determination and efforts paid off proving that hard work brings great rewards. This was a well deserved win and testament to our team grit and teamwork showcasing the dedication of every player! As a club, I’m excited to keep building on this monumental in future matches and training!

Leah Burrow: “On Wednesdays we don’t just compete against other teams, but after a long day on the field most of us meet at the local bars for fun and unique socials hosted by our brilliant social secretary Eve Matthews. Every week we have a different theme to dress up leaving room for competitions and often humor. Some weeks we join with Men’s hockey as well, playing a variety of games and icebreakers to get to know the other people competing (and winning) for our sport. Not only have these socials been immense amounts of fun but they have also helped me branch out with other years and my own, especially as I am a fresher this has really made me feel welcomed and integrated within the university and the sports department.” What are you waiting for? It isn’t too late to join Women’s Hockey…

My experience of joining Netball

Netball has been a hobby of mine for many years and despite coming to the club with little to no prior club experience, everyone was extremely welcoming and helped me to navigate the first few weeks of university life

During what could be a difficult period for some, it helped me to find people with similar interests in a safe and kind environment. I have met many Freshers in the same position as me, which has been a massive comfort and has allowed me to make more friends within the first few weeks.

This has been especially important for me as I have come to university a year early and am completing a foundation year instead of finishing my prior studies.

As a 17-year-old in an environment aimed at 18+, my experience has been somewhat different to others. Because of this, I am unable to participate in netball matches until I am 18, but the netball committee encouraged me to come to training and take part in as many events as possible.

I believe it’s been so important for me to experience this side of the club initially as it has allowed me to see that netball matches are not the only part of joining netball, but a massive part is about being part of a community and getting involved.

The Netball Committee and other club members have helped improve my experience during the transition into university and have given me many chances to become an active member of the club that I have been eager to participate in.

The club hold many events and provide members with many opportunities, whether this be a social event or a volunteering / fundraising event, they have all been nothing but fun!

Joining netball has not only helped me make new friends but has also helped to improve overall fitness levels and ability to work with others effectively.
