n the 1940s, the 400 block of Berthoud’s Mountain Avenue was home to a pair of small grocery stores. The photograph that accompanies this article shows an automobile parked in front of the Snow White Grocery & Then & Now Market at Surveyor Columnist 434 Mountain Ave. A second auto may be seen parked in front of Barbre’s Red & White Store at 416 Mountain Ave. A westbound bus that is passing in front of Mark the stores is French the dominant image in the photo. The Snow White Grocery & Market occupied the building that presently houses Da Bean coffee shop. Edwin Davis, the store’s owner and proprietor, opened the business in 1922. Davis originally worked for his brother who operated the Davis, Brown, McAllaster Mercantile at the northwest corner of the Third Street and Mountain Avenue. After that business dissolved in 1920, Davis opened the Snow White Grocery & Market where he offered a wide va-

riety of fresh produce, canned goods and meat. Davis closed his store in 1956. Barbre’s Red & White Store was located across the alley. It occupied a small building that sat next to a private residence at the northwest corner of Fourth Street and Mountain Avenue. Virgil Barbre and his wife Mildred operated the store. In the 1970s, when the private residence was converted into a restaurant, the old Red & White store was connected to the structure to serve as the restaurant’s kitchen. Today it also serves as Mi Cocina’s breakfast burrito shop. In the late 1940s Berthoud had three more grocery stores. Garvin’s Store was located at 527 Fourth St. Frank Garvin operated the business. In the store’s early years, it was a favorite haunt of the community’s Germans from Russia because both English and German was spoken there. The J.J. DePapa pizza restaurant recently utilized that location. The Eastside Grocery was located at 128 Mountain Ave. Situated west of the curve in the old highway to Loveland, the Eastside Grocery was also equipped with a small café. Abbott Glass & Door Repair operates in that location today. A building

at 324 Mountain Ave. was home to the Berthoud Grocery & Market. The shop occupied the east part of the building that presently houses the Berthoud Drug Store at 330 Mountain Ave. Another building that did not house a grocery store may be seen behind the bus — a tall building with a mansard roof and four large windows, the Farmers’ Flour Mill that was located at 270 Mountain Ave. The mill was built in the late 1880s. Beloved husband, son and brother, Damon Gary Hughes, went home to be with his Lord on April 16, 2014. Damon was born on Sept. 30, 1970, and from the age of three, he grew up in Johnstown, attending Johnstown schools until his sophomore year. He graduated from Berthoud High School in 1989 and Damon Hughes from the University of Northern Colorado in 1993, with his bachelor’s degree in

business. He was employed by Corden Pharmaceuticals (formerly Syntex and Roche) in Boulder since 1994. Damon was an avid outdoorsman. From the age of two he enjoyed family camping and fishing, and added hunting, boating, water skiing and fourwheeling, and even landscaping, as he grew into the wonderful man and father that he was. He also had a great love for Colorado and especially the Rocky Mountains. He always regretted not becoming the mountain man he wanted to be. He will be forever loved and missed by all who

knew him. His smile, his kindness, his outgoing personality, his passion for life and his love of family and friends will always be cherished. Damon is survived by his spouse Nicole Hughes; three step-daughters, Mary Ashley Avery (Jeff), Madison and Bailey Cain; parents, Robert and Ann Hughes; sister, Jodi Black (Jerry); three nephews, Jameson and Kyle Sherwood and Jacob Black, and many aunts, uncles and cousins and friends. A service of resurrection hope will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the United Methodist Church of Johnstown. There will be a luncheon reception at the church immediately following the services.
