Fundraiser for Amber Brooks Amber is 31 years old. She has lived in Berthoud since 1996. In July she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer metastasized to the liver. In early September she had a significant surgery at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver to remove half of her colon with the tumor and to remove the spots on the liver. After six weeks of recuperation and healing, she started a six-month chemotherapy regime. A fundraiser for Amber will be held at Embassy Suites Hotel, Loveland, 6 - 10 p.m. and includes dinner, silent auction and music. Tickets $50, adult and children under 12, $15. Saturday, Jan. 25 The Show Choir Showcase is this Saturday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Commons at Berthoud High School. Tickets are $10 at the door and include the show and dessert. The evening will also feature the students who are participating in the Show Choir Workshops that are taking place on Friday, Jan. 24, and the morning of Saturday, Jan. 25. There are two workshops available. Kids in Blue is specifically for second through fifth graders, and Kids in Red is for sixth through eighth graders. Any student interested is invited to attend the Show Choir Workshops from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 to noon on Saturday at Berthoud High School. Children may register at the door. The cost is $35. Wednesday, Jan. 29 Larimer County’s Flood 2013 recovery is sponsoring an Informational open house on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 6-8:30 p.m.at the Loveland Chilson Senior Center, 700 E. Fourth Street in Loveland. The purpose of the open house is to provide information and updates on flood related recovery activities in Larimer County including: road and bridge repair, floodplain impacts, damage assessments, building permits and code requirements, flood loss and property taxes, master planning efforts, debris removal, stream-bank restoration, and potential future funding opportunities; as well as information from selected volunteer and non-profit community outreach organizations. Larimer County Recovery Manager Suzanne Bassinger especially encourages flood survivors to attend. An important note: a complete closure of Highway 34 is planned for that evening, from 9 p.m., Jan. 29, 2014, to 3 a.m. Jan. 30, 2014, to allow reconstruction of the Idlewild Lane Bridge, located approximately two miles east of Drake. This event is designed to accommodate people going home via Highway 34 before the 9 p.m. closure. Senior citizens who meet the eligibility requirements can work off up to $400 of their Larimer County property tax by applying at one of several upcoming information and application sessions. Eligibility requirements include: • Applicants must be at least 60 years of age. • Applicants must own property and live on that property in Larimer County. • Applicants must have a gross monthly income at or below $1,915 (for one person) and $2,585 (for two people). Established in 1981, the tax work-off program is a method for senior citizens to work off a portion of their property tax. Those accepted into the program are placed in temporary jobs in Larimer County departments. The program was developed to address the challenge for seniors on fixed incomes to afford the higher property taxes that rising housing costs incur. Extension in Larimer County is offering intensive training on food safety and prevention of foodborne illness, methods of canning, pickling, freezing and dehydrating. Master Food Safety Advisors must apply for selection to be in the program, must attend all trainings, work cooperatively with other volunteers and give a minimum of 30 hours of service each year to the community by sharing their knowledge and teaching others. We are offering the Master Food Safety Advisor program so that we can expand Larimer County Extension’s capabilities to provide the public with research-based information from Colorado State University and USDA by trained volunteers. Experiences for volunteers include answering consumer phone calls, providing information at local farmers markets, fairs or supermarkets, conducting presentations and workshops for community groups and schools, preparing educational displays and writing articles for newsletters and newspapers Applications and complete program information are available at the Larimer County Extension Office, 1525 Blue Spruce Dr., in Fort Collins or on the website www.larimer.org/ext. Larimer County’s Geographic information Systems, GIS, and Mapping Group has updated the popular Land information Locator (LiL), the county’s parcel locator suite of applications which provides a window to much of the county’s most sought after land information and a variety of tools for access. The new LiL suite is accessible through the county’s Enterprise GIS launch page at http:// maps.larimer.org/lcmaps and from other links on the Virtual Courthouse, Larimer County’s website at www.larimer.org. The Larimer County Department of Natural Resources is seeking professional visual artist applicants for 2014. The selected “Artist of the Year” will have the opportunity to create a piece of visual art inspired by a Larimer County park or open space which they will donate to the county. The Larimer County Natural Resources Department will host a public celebration of the final submitted artwork, will display the work for public viewing in a Larimer County building, and will publicize the selected artist whenever appropriately possible.
