AND COMMENTARY

YOUR VOICE To the editor: Both parties have failed to stop the present president and past presidents from making laws by “executive orders.” I thought the Constitution allowed only Congress to make and enact laws. Both parties have failed to give the American people a sound monetary system. Having a privately-owned (by central bankers) banking cartel that creates “money out of thin air” and then charges us over-taxed taxpayers to pay interest on this inflated money is against the wishes of the Constitution. The results have given us an inflated dollar that is worth a penny or less in buying power. Both parties have killed and maimed young men and women with undeclared wars that America had no business being involved with. The U.N. was created to prevent wars. The U.S. military was never meant to be the “traffic cop” of the world. A Congress that had our U.S. interests at heart would not have allowed these unconstitutional “police actions” to take place to begin with. Take the U.S. out of the U.N. Both parties, in and out of power, have failed miserably to give us a fair and balanced tax system. The present tax system is too long and complicated,

and it destroys any incentive to make honest money, which is un-American and violates a person’s ability to enjoy peace and prosperity which the Constitution guarantees. Both parties have created draconian rules and regulations on all commercial companies, which have given the companies the excuse and reasons for fleeing the U.S. — 56,000 companies at last count. Both parties have signed illegal treaties with foreign governments that have killed American jobs and destroyed our ability to compete with cheap labor of foreign companies. Rescind NAFTA and GATT. Both parties punish small banking institutions with tons of rules while giving money to banks that should have been allowed to fail because they were responsible for creating the financial crisis we are in. Both parties have spent more money than this generation and coming generations will ever be able to pay for. Debt is everywhere, and with no end in sight. “Let someone else pay for it,” is the password in Congress. “Who cares how much we spend? Not I!” Both parties take turns seeing how

much they can get by with in shredding the document that gives us freedom and not slavery — the document we call the U.S. Constitution. Both parties are moving the U.S. toward becoming no different than Communist China, Russia and Cuba. If they can enact more laws, create more agencies and departments, we soon can call the U.S. a group of United States of Socialist America., the U.S.S.A. Thank you Mr. Putin. Mike Sanfilippo Berthoud

To the editor: The dust has settled after the election. But, the recent election has made Berthoud look foolish, in my opinion. We have a mayor, board of trustees and town administrator that seemed to be on the path toward solving one of our most pressing issues. That issue is the indisputable fact that Berthoud is in dire financial straits. The years of the no-growth policy coupled with the widely reported water and sewer problems and costs have put Berthoud in the hole so deep that needed programs have been cut. This no-growth policy was put forward and enforced by prior mayors, boards and town managers. We are still reeling from this Boulder-like policy.

Mission statement: To serve the Berthoud community with news and information and to record history for future generations. The town administrator has fixed the problems at the water and the sewer treatment plant, but the cost has been high. We will be paying high water bills for many years without more growth to support the debt. A friend of mine recently told me something that is spot on: He told me, and I am paraphrasing, that you can find water in other towns that tastes as good as Berthoud’s but you will never pay more for it. The group that aligned to take Berthoud off the path espoused by the mayor and board since 2012 has put a dark cloud over Berthoud. The very negative campaign was highlighted in newspapers and television stations making our politics very similar to national politics. The following happened just prior to and on April 1: 1. The sale by the town of the Berthoud Commons property was derailed by all of the negative publicity created by this group. It was further alleged that this property is a park by a lawyer because BMX races are held there. This is the same as saying that Fickel Park is a drug store because of the drugs being sold and purchased there. (Ask parents of middle and high school students about this.) The loss of this sale jeopardizes a $500,000 endowment to Berthoud. 2. The Haworth annexation was overturned on a ballot question.

Personally, I don’t understand how this can happen. This family met all of the requirements for annexation, spent a lot of money, brought all of the required documents to the town for approval and received the approval of the board of trustees. How does a reversal of an annexation that met all of the requirements happen retroactively? Is this reversal even legal? 3. It has now been decided that any future annexations will require voter approval. Trustees are elected to make these decisions after all of the conditions for annexation are met. They don’t select property for annexation; it is brought to the town by the owners. For future annexations, Berthoud will have to come up with a minimum of $10,000 if the vote is a special election. Berthoud is broke and it is hard to believe that anyone wanting to annex in the future will spend much money working on a development to be decided by voters. I hope that Jennifer Baker and Chris Buckridge will support the efforts to attract home builders and developers to Berthoud. Mr. Henning will have many fences to mend with other trustees and staff after his campaign, but hopefully he will recognize what is right for Berthoud.
