The 30th Annual National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Each year’s National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states in addition to U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. It is designed to: • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back! Neighborhoods can celebrate with block parties, cookouts, visits from the sheriff’s office, exhibits, flashlight walks, contests or youth programs. These events have proven to be an effective, inexpensive and an enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled its annual Citizens’ Academy for Oct. 1, 2013 through Dec. 17, 2013. The weekly class, held in the evening, is limited in size to 35 participants on a first comefirst served basis. The deadline for applications is Sept. 20, 2013. There is a $25 fee to cover the cost of an academy tee shirt and lunch during the field day.

Every session is packed with behind the scenes information on how each of these units operate presented by the deputies or captains responsible for each area. Sessions include: • Patrol Operations and Investigations • Crime Lab • Emergency Management and Emergency Services • SWAT and Bomb Squad • K-9 Unit • Jail Tour • Volunteer Opportunities • Ride-along with a Deputy Another highlight is a field day where citizens will participate in live scenarios responding to calls which includes live shooting with simulated ammunition, making a simulated traffic stop, and processing a crime scene for evidence.
