Wednesday, July 17 “Nature Notes Club Meeting.” Join the Nature Notes Club for its regular The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit is looking for participants for this year’s National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The 30th Annual National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Each year’s National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states in addition to U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. It is designed to: • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back! Neighborhoods can celebrate with block parties, cookouts, visits from the sheriff’s office, exhibits, flashlight walks, contests or youth programs. These events have proven to be an effective, inexpensive and an enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled its annual Citizens’ Academy for Oct. 1, 2013 through Dec. 17, 2013. The weekly class, held in the evening, is limited in size to 35 participants on a first comefirst served basis. The deadline for applications is Sept. 20, 2013. There is a $25 fee to cover the cost of an academy tee shirt and lunch during the field day.

Approximately one-hour program. 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 22 “Tiny Trekkers.” Join Larimer County Naturalists for a special program designed for your toddler and you. This program at Devil’s Backbone Open Space, located just west of Loveland, off of Highway 34, will be a morning filled with crafts, stories and fun facts. A parent or guardian must accompany the child for this hour-long program. After the program, feel free to explore the open space with your child. Program is free. No registration required. 10 a.m. Friday, July 26 “Take it outside with your commissioner.” Hike at Devil’s Backbone Open Space with Commissioner Tom Donnelly and Open Lands Program Manager Kerri Rollins. This informal opportunity to visit with an elected official will give you the chance to ask anything you’d like about the county in a spectacular outdoor setting. Please go to www. larimer.org/NRregistration to sign up. 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27 “Messages in stone at Devil’s Backbone.” Take a short hike with Naturalist Ed through millions of years of geologic history visible in and near Devils The Citizens’ Academy is designed to give citizens an inside look at the operations of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Every session is packed with behind the scenes information on how each of these units operate presented by the deputies or captains responsible for each area. Sessions include: • Patrol Operations and Investigations • Crime Lab • Emergency Management and Emergency Services • SWAT and Bomb Squad • K-9 Unit • Jail Tour • Volunteer Opportunities • Ride-along with a Deputy Another highlight is a field day where citizens will participate in live scenarios responding to calls which includes live shooting with simulated ammunition, making a simulated traffic stop, and processing a crime scene for evidence. Larimer County Extension Food Preservation and Preparation Workshops — Canning Basics for Safe Preserving: Learn all about the “how and why” of preserving food at home. This workshop focuses on canning safety, types of equipment and proper canning methods. A great class for beginners or those needing a review. Learn how you can enjoy the delightful, fresh-picked taste all year long by making jams, jellies, preserves, marmalades, conserves and butters. The workshop will cover the basics of water bath canning to ensure safe preservation. This handson workshop includes a jar of jam to take home. Save the date — 1st Annual Berthoud Open golf tournament will be held on Friday, Sept. 13 at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Windsor.
