Introduction Dear Readers, One of the main responsibilities of cities like Budapest is to create community spaces for its citizenry – venues that bring us closer to our cultural values and each other. Cultural centres are community venues that are capable of embracing the cultural needs and opportunities that invigorate the diversity of a metropolis. As local institutions, cultural centres have been able to directly reach the residents of the city’s districts for decades. With their constantly renewing ideas, they remain refreshing spots in the community life of the city. Each of the city’s community centres in 23 districts, all of whose main priority is to provide quality free time activities, attracts their audiences with their rich repertoire of programs. What makes their activities significant is that by being mindful of the local relations, they know how to utilize our most ancient means of communication: art, music, dance, sport; moreover, they can encourage us to actively participate in the programs rather than being just spectators. Since the heterogeneity of the districts is an essential part of Budapest’s image, the wide range of colourful programs that the community cultural centres have to offer sends a uniformed message to the citizens of Budapest: in these centres everyone can find the values that are important for them. As well as preserving traditions, the local cultural centres of Budapest offer not only exhibitions, club events, poetry theatres, art and crafts classes and dance houses, but also learning programs, sports days, various courses and even summer camps. Observing the wide spectrum of offerings, one can easily notice how diverse the audience that they attract can get in terms of age and interest. According to the feedback, visitors like to take advantage of the opportunities that are offered to them by their community cultural centre, their district and their city. The most interesting

things in or about cities are the ones that the local residents consider the most interesting. Therefore, it’s safe to say, it is the cultural centres of Budapest that offer a refreshing experience to foreigners coming to the city, in addition to preserving the city’s good name obtained through its cultural life in the world. This issue aims to provide you with the introductions, contacts and main programs of the community centres in the city, which make their best effort to safeguard traditions and innovative community values. Cultural treasures will come to life in the moment they reach their audience. We can keep them alive by endeavouring to recognize every opportunity – at hand or newly discovered –, which we may have failed to recognize before. I sincerely hope this magazine that introduces the successfully operating community cultural centres of the capital’s 23 districts will help you in it. Seven dance halls await our visitors and lovers of dance and physical activities. In the life of the institute, Hungarian folk culture plays a significant role; its Hungarian Dance House has a 39 year-old history. That is the oldest, continuously operating dance house of the 41-year-old dance house movement of Hungary. Our institute organized the first public folk dance course of Hungary in 1991, showcasing dances from the different areas of the Carpathian Basin. The aim of the cultural centre is to satisfy the cultural demands of citizens living in the 15th district of Budapest (including three different areas: a housing estate of 40,000 residents and two suburban areas). Our main goal is to strengthen localism and civil society. The Museum of Local History has a rich collection of

Szilas Folk Dance Ensemble performing the traditional folk dances of the Carpathian Basin is among the ten greatest Hungarian dance troupes. Csokonai Cultural Centre has been organizing Rákospalota Short Film Festival (RÖFI) since 2010. This initiative was launched because short films produced in Hungary struggle to reach an audience. Consequently, RÖFI has become a new platform for releasing Hungarian short films. Thanks to a successful first year, the festival has been held yearly ever since. Its profile was further developed by posting a tender/ competition in 2011 with the purpose of releasing at least two new productions made by Csokonai which are to open the festival every year. The subsidy is provided by the local government of the 15th district and the members of the jury are famous representatives of the Hungarian film industry. Since 2011 twelve films have been produced, some of them have been shown in international film festivals and some have gained awards. In addition to continuing our tradition, we have two important short-term aims: firstly, to ensure that Hungarian short films can regularly be shown on public service television, secondly to build international relationships with festivals of a similar profile. Our longer-term aim is to establish a non-profit culture distribution structure cooperating with other community centres to distribute short films to every corner of Hungary and maintain the public screening of a film as social experience alongside online homeviewing. This cultural centre is located in one of the greenest districts of Budapest – the 16th district. We call it the “garden-city” because here you can live a calm and happy life with children playing on the street or going on trips into the forest at the weekend, but it’s still within the capital. Corvin Cultural Centre’s activities  informational activities are mainly for the local inhabitants,  knowledge dissemination giving them venues for practicing  exhibitions and arts and enjoying arts, sports, and getting  community based cultural activities together. Besides these activities the   events and organizations institution often organizes events  international projects which have national significance. Festivals and national holidays attract a wider audience and get a great deal of media attention. Culture, arts (theater, music, fine arts), youth programs, community events (courses, clubs, national feasts, festivals) are held almost every day of the week. Corvin Cultural Centre has a huge theater hall with 500 seats, proper staging for scenarized performances and for conferences as well. There are 8 rooms for courses and clubs, 3 different venues for exhibitions and a salon for smaller performances, concerts. The building is located in the middle of a beautiful park; a broad track leads directly from the suburban railway stop. The environment is favourable for families, youngsters and elders alike. It has a special, suburban atmosphere, although it is only 20 minutes from the city center. The park has several facilities like a swimming pool, an elementary and secondary school, a college and a medical center. We are proud of our international events: we host the International Danube Carnival every summer and organize a folk dance competition with several international dance companies. The district has a significant number of Vietnamese immigrants, thus once a year we celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The Community Centre is located at the South-East entry-point of Budapest, at the junction of Nemes and Nagykőrösi street, where the traffic is heavy but it makes it easily accessible. Covering mainly the Pestszentlőrinc and Pestszentimre parts of Budapest, the centre started to operate in 1988 to achieve the goal of ensuring local cultural provision to the district’s 20 thousand citizens. The community centre is open for the residents living in the wider agglomeration as well. The local population is far from being affluent, experiencing a lot of social problems and unemployment. Providing access to services, developing cultural opportunities is a must in our philosophy, especially as the area is at least one hour distance from the center of Budapest. The institution has always put an emphasis on collaborating with partner organisations. Partnerships have been built with local schools and kindergartens, sporting communities, elderly centers and nursing homes, the local branches of the Pensioners’ Association, The Pestszentimre History Society, the Stamp Collector Society, the Civil Guard Association, and the Association of Large Families. Valuing and cultivating locality is a common denominator that binds together these actors in the interests of developing local culture and community life. Childen of 3-6 and 6-14 age groups are especially targeted as we provide them with a lot of activites tailored to their needs (modern dance-based activities, ballet, folk dance, social dance, kung-fu, crafts workshops are widely appreciated). Dramatic and theatrical

performances are also brought to them. The area is ideally suited to outdoor events as well. Fostering adult learning and offering educational programmes is important and relevant here. Digital competencies, IT skills, driving skills require constant improvement, therefore training courses are offered to those interested in order to assist them in career development. Promotion ofhealth activities is a priority area as well. (Aerobics, yoga, medical recreational exercises and fitness services are available to visitors). The Centre staff tries to keep up high quality entertainment or adult guests. (Balls, dance parties, musical performances, etc.). For the 60+ groups in collaboration with the Retired Pensioners’ club members Hungarian song evenings are organized every first Friday of the month. The services developed for helping citizens include legal counselling, photocopying, IT support, information, goods fairs: all of them are either free or requiring only a small fee. The institution was established in 1923 as a result of joint efforts of the local worker community and the residents of the area. The primary goal of creating a public space for cultural enrichment of the neighbourhood has been satisfactorily achieved over the past decades. Naturally a period of 91 years didn’t pass without

The staff is ÂÂ international projects professionally very committed to find ÂÂ other proper answers and cultural solutions to the ever flexible character of social change. A successful bid in 2009 funded by the EU has put the institution on a new track of lifelong learning and adult learning opportunities have been created as a consequence, now education runs through all aspects of a year-round programme. The traditional pillar of the offerings has been kept, namely fostering community cultural development and building communities, producing innovative means of leisure time entertainment, helping people to become informed citizens and cultivating local cultural traditions. Efforts have been made to increase cooperation with the formal education system, effectively targeting the young and contributing to the education of the next generation of art lovers. The whole philosophy of the institution revolves around the theme of building ongoing interactive relations with the local communities. Through getting them engaged there is hope we can contribute to the goals of creating a socially inclusive society and reducing sociocultural inequalities. As a result of exploring innovative methods in our activities, several model programmes have gained professional recognition. Firstly a complex drug-prevention programme was developed in 1997 (Say NO to Drugs!) that generated further networks and events, such as annual national meetings and conferences and raised considerable social awareness. The “Baby Project” was developed in 2012 and became a “good practice” followed and adapted by other institutions interested in addressing family cultural issues in early childhood. We promote forms of cultural activities and the development of skills of young children. The success of the local and national festivals organized by the institution was the result of the above priority. From time to time our supporters have given us positive feedback. In recent years the institution has become a player in

The community centre is located at Grassalkovich Street 122-124. in Budapest’s twenty-third district, called Soroksár. activities like amateur art groups, community-meetings clubs, courses, fairs and lectures for public benefits also serve our guests. Some of our clubs are for groups safeguarding ethnic German traditions, amateur choirs, art groups. Entertainment programs and balls – which are Soroksár’s traditions – are held as well. The building is perfectly suitable for such purposes, because for decades it used to be a restaurant and balls were held there even before it became a community centre. Non-govermental organizations are very active in the district. There are groups for the retired, conservationists, localists and sport enthusiasts. New kinds of art classes and community activities have been organised in the last few years: art groups for children and adults, and creative workshops. These groups not only have earned a good reputation in the district but some of them have become well-known in Hungary or on international levels.
