FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED PRINTING. One of the finest and most beautiful editions of Black Beauty that we know of. Aldin’s colour plates are vivid and expressive, yet very natural. The binding is lovely and the presentation large and rich. The first edition of the book with Cecil Aldin’s illustrations was issued by Jarrolds in 1912. BLACK BEAUTY is the only book Anna Sewell ever wrote. It is a timeless story which relates events in the life of a horse which suffers great cruelty and despair but for whom there is the ultimate eventuality of a happy home. This novel became an immediate success and in its day caused the altering of human behaviour towards and treatment of domesticated animals. Unfortunately Anna Sewell would never realize her dream of experiencing the changes she wrote and fought for as she died only a few months after the book’s publication having never received more then £20 for her literary efforts. The novel struck home in an immediate and especially meaningful way for animal lovers and for animal rights activists in their struggles for the humane treatment of animals. In the intervening years since its publication it has become a revered classic of the highest order . It has become known as “the Uncle Tom’s Cabin of the horse” $395.

lustrations on 103 plates. Thick 8vo, very handsomely bound in three-quarter red morocco over maroon cloth boards, the spine with raised bands, gilt stopped and gilt ruled, gilt lettered and numbered in three compartments. A very pleasing and handsome set with plates, maps and textblocks quite clean and well preserved, the bindings in excellent condition, fine, clean, sharp and beautifully preserved, light mellowing or age evidence to the half-titles. A very nice set. RARE AND IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Norwegian captain Roald Amundsen had initially intended make an expedition to the Arctic, but changed his plans at the last moment and announced he would try for the South Pole instead. His explanation to the public was that if he could beat the English and Japanese expeditions to the Pole then he could secure success and funds for his extensive Arctic expedition, and also “snatch the prize” for his own country. So , unbeknownst to Scott, Amundsen sailed southward in the “Fram” to the Bay of Whales that would afford his expedition both the shortest route to the Pole and a route that would not overlap with either the Japanese or the English expeditions. From start to finish, Amundsen’s expedition ran like clockwork. He carefully planned every moment of the trip, using his experience in the Arctic and his extensive knowledge of dog-teams to help him through. His team was entirely Norwegian, accustomed to a harsh and cold climate, and were excellent ski-runners. In addition, Amundsen traveled light; he brought five men and fifty dogs on his expedition so that the latter could eventually serve as food for the former. Part of what doomed Scott’s party was the fact that he favored men and ponies over dogs, bringing twelve men, eight ponies, and only twenty-six dogs. $3750.

The Romantic Tale of Lorna Doone Beautifully Illustrated and Exquisitely Bound 5 Blackmore, R. D. LORNA DOONE: A Romance of Exmoor (London: Sampson Low, Marston and Co.,LTD., n.d.) Brittan and 4 figurative subjects depicting scenes from the story by Charles E. Brock. 4to, beautifully bound and signed by Morrell in very fine full crimson crushed morocco. The covers are decorated with roll tooled interlacing borders in gilt with fine floral corner-pieces and with beautifully gilt-tooled turn-ins and edges, the spine delicately gilt decorated with floral tools in the corners of gilt frames within the compartments between gilt stippled raised bands, two compartments with green morocco labels bordered and lettered in gilt. Very fine red marbled endpapers, a silk ribbon marker and vivid gilding to all edges finish off this most impressive binding. A most handsome and superb copy, the text and plates in very fine condition, the beautiful Morrell binding in a perfect state of preservation. FIRST PRINTING OF THE FINE DULVERTON EDITION IN A VERY HANDSOME FULL BINDING GILT, SIGNED BY MORRELL. ARGUABLY THE FINEST FORMAT OF THIS BELOVED TALE. Brittan’s and Brock’s lovely paintings display a superb combination of artistic talents, the typeset is easy to the eyes and the stunning Morrell binding all combine to make this truly an heirloom to be treasured. Lorna Doone has become a timeless classic, though Blackmore originally had much difficulty in having it published. Almost from the beginning it received great acclaim by many of Blackmore’s contemporaries including Robert Louis Stevenson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Hardy, and Margaret Oliphant. Blackmore combined elements of romance with those of the historical novels popularized by Sir Walter Scott. The basis for his historical understanding is traced to Macaulay’s History of England and the analysis on the Monmouth rebellion. $1250.

A fine and bright copy of this charming book. BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED BY BRICKDALE. An expansion of Tennyson’s “Morte d’Arthur,” THE IDYLLS OF THE KING was well received, and helped to restore Tennyson’s popularity after the critical failure of his previous volume of poems. The magnificent illustrations by Brickdale that grace the pages of this edition are reminiscent of the pre-Raphaelite school. Their classical style is a perfect medium to tell the immortal story of the Arthurian legend. $325.

René Bull’s “Rubaiyat” Beautifully Illustrated One of the Finest Renderings of this Passionate Poem 7 [Bull, René, illus.]. THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, Rendered Into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald (London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]) First edition with Bull’s illustrations. The text printed on the recto only (other then Quatrain numbers) of 75 numbered leaves, plus plates and prelims. A very bright and appealing copy of this beautiful book. The plates are all pristine and perfect, the text leaves quite clean with only a bit of minor spotting at the prelims and very lightly at the edges, the binding firm and very handsome with only very light general age, a little bubbling to the cloth due to the glue used in production. A WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED BOOK, ONE OF OUR FAVORITES AND A BOOK THAT IS NOW BECOMING QUITE HARD TO FIND. Bull’s illustrations for the Rubaiyat remain among the most evocative and beautiful ever accomplished. This book alone cements his reputation among the great book illustrators of the early twentieth century. The strikingly romantic text of the poem is greatly enriched by beautiful decorations which adorn every page of text. A truly passionate book. $495.

The First Edition of Sir Richard Francis Burton - 1888 The Gulistan or Rose Garden of Sa’di 8 Burton, Richard. THE GULISTAN OR ROSE GARDEN OF SA’DI, Faithfully Translated into English (Benares: Printed by the Kama Shastra Society for Private Subscribers Only, 1888) First Edition, printed for private subscribers only. 8vo, bound in publisher’ s original full stiff vellum with gilt ruled and lettered spine, the covers bevelled and with blind ruled borders. An excellent copy, fine and very well preserved with some light and of course, expected mellowing to the white vellum. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT BURTON ITEM, and according to Penzer (p. 177), the distinction between the first and second issue of the book is only the presence of the date on the spine. As a possible indication of this book’s scarcity, Penzer quotes 17 sale room prices for Burton’s KAMA SUTRA, 10 for the ANANGA RANGA, 26 for the PERFUMED GARDEN, but only three for the GULISTAN. The Persian poet Sa’di wrote “The Rose Garden” in 1258. It has readership throughout Asia and Africa, and has been translated into Latin, English, French, German, and Dutch. The Kama Shastra Society wished to introduce the first complete and unexpurgated translation into English, and succeeded in issuing a work of elegance and simplicity. The text includes chapters on the morals of Dervishes, the advantages of Silence, on love and old age, and on rules of conduct in life. An important edition of this Persian Classic. $795.

The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night The First of the Handsome Library Editions With the Material Removed by Lady Burton Fully Restored 9 Burton, Richard F., translator. THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT. Translated from the Arabic by Capt. Sir R. F. Burton. Printed from the Original Edition and Edited by Leonard C. Smithers (London: H. S. Nichols & Co., 1894) 12 volumes. A very fine set exceptionally so for this edition, near mint. THE FIRST OF NICHOLS AND SMITHERS’ FINE LIBRARY EDITIONS OF THIS MASTERPIECE OF WORLD LITERATURE AND ONE OF THE GREAT TRANSLATION EFFORTS OF ALL TIME, AND TO THIS DAY, UNRIVALED BY ANY SUBSEQUENT LINGUISTIC FEAT. Richard Burton was one of the foremost linguists of his time, an explorer, poet, translator, ethnologist, and archaeologist, among other things. ‘The Thousand Nights and a Night’ is probably the most famous of all his many works. This translation reflected his encyclopedic knowledge of Arabic language, sexual practices and life: “it reveals a profound acquaintance with the vocabulary and customs of the Muslims, with their classical idiom,” [Ency Britt] as well as colloquialisms, philosophy, modes of thought and intimate details. In contrast to Victorian mores, Burton was driven to explore what would now be called by literary critics the uncanny/Unheimliche or the unresolvable tensions of human beings. Accordingly, he recorded details of daily life and practices that were considered vulgar at the time. The original edition was published in Benares in 1885 and printed by the Kamashastra Society for private subscribers only. Lady Burton’s edition of 1886 omitted 215 pages from the original text. In this edition, the omitted material has been restored. Edited by Leonard Smithers, who hoped that this edition would permit Burton’s translation of the famous tales to “take its proper place on the library shelf alongside Cervantes and Shakespeare.” (From the Editor’s Note.) $2450.

His object was to paint portraits of men and women in every tribe, together with views of villages, games, etc. The two volumes are a series of fifty-eight letters written while the author was among the Indians. They form an unusually entertaining narrative of travels in an almost unknown region, and at the same time are of great value in their descriptions of Indian life” (Larned 616). $2850.

Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” - A Beautifully Bound Set John Grant’s Exquisite Illustrated Edition The Fine Motteux Translation With Lalauze’s Etchings 11 Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de. THE HISTORY OF THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA...translated from the Spanish, By F.A. Motteux (Edinburgh: John Grant, 1908) 4 volumes. First Edition Thus, Grant’s fine printing of 1908. With Provenance. Richly illustrated throughout with 37 engravings designed and etched by Ad. Lalauze on tissue-guarded plates, including a fine engraved portrait of Cervantes at the beginning of Volume I. Title pages printed in red and black. Tall, thick 8vo, in very fine contemporary three-quarter chocolate brown morocco over brown cloth, the back and corner pieces gilt ruled, the spines beautifully gilt tooled in a morning glory motif in compartments separated by finely gilt tooled raised bands, two compartments gilt lettered, fine marbled endpapers, a.e.g. These impressive bindings were no doubt custom made for Sir James Liege Hulett, South African sugar magnate and noted philanthropist, whose engraved armorial plates are affixed to the front endpapers. A very handsome set, the fine bindings remarkably free of wear of evidence of use, the text very fine but for the lightest of inevitable spotting which only occasionally appears and is primarily confined to the prelims. A FINE AND HANDSOME SET WITH EXCELLENT ACADEMIC INCLUSIONS. A beautiful set of Cervantes and a very scarce edition edited by J.G. Lockhart who also wrote the included essay on the Life of Cervantes. Motteux’s translation is one of the most famous of the period, and here, the book is presented in lovely style. There is a fine ‘Life of Cervantes’ preceding the text and in addition, important and very copious notes on the text are appended. The content of the notes is of significant interest to the reader as they have been taken from the most important and scholarly editions prepared by Bowle, Pellicer and the Academy. In addition, significant content was gained from researching the old histories and chronicles with which the Spaniards of the 16th century were familiar. Thus, many of the period poetical nuances have here been included in English for the first time. Blackwood’s said of the translation that “This is, we think, out of all sight, the richest and the best. ... Motteux, the translator of Cervantes and Rabelais, possesses a native humour which no other translator that we ever met with has approached.” And William Prescott said that “The most popular versions in English are those of Motteux, Jarvis, and Smollett. Perhaps the first is the best of all. It was by a Frenchman who came over to England in the time of James the Second. It betrays nothing of its foreign parentage, however, while its rich and racy diction, and its quaint turns of expression, are admirably suited to convey a lively and very faithful image of the original. The slight tinge of antiquity, which belongs to the time, is not displeasing, and comports well with the tone of knightly dignity which distinguishes the hero.” Miscellanies, 1845 $1575.

The Last “Black Letter” Edition of Geoffrey Chaucer The Works of Our Ancient, Learned and Excellent English Poet London - The Third Speght Edition - 1687 12 Chaucer, Geoffrey. THE WORKS OF OUR ANCIENT, LEARNED, AND EXCELLENT ENGLISH POET, JEFFREY CHAUCER ...to Which Is Adjoyn’d the Story of the Siege of Thebes, by John Lidgate...Together With the Life Of Chaucer (London: np, 1687) The third Speght edition, and the last ‘black letter’ edition of Chaucer’s works. With the famous engraved Gower portrait and genealogical frontispiece, engraved coat of arms at the beginning of the works and with woodcut initials throughout. Folio, full antique calf, the spine sometime restored to correct period style with raised bands ruled in double gilt and with a red morocco label gilt ruled and lettered. A very handsome copy, internally quite clean and still crisp, a bit of expected mellowing or age evidence, the binding handsome with some expert restoration as noted. A nice, tall copy of this important work. A SCARCE, HANDSOME AND IMPORTANT EDITION. This was the last ‘black letter’ edition of Chaucer to be published. Thomas Speght included in this edition “The Court of Love,” added to the Chaucer canon by Stow in 1561, as well as four new pieces: “The Flower and the Leaf;” “Chaucer’s Dream;” “Jacke Upland” (spuriously attributed to Chaucer); and “Chaucer’s A B C.” The text of the Tales follows that of the 1602 edition, but with the addition of the then recently rediscovered endings of the Cook’s and the Squire’s tales. There is also a twenty-four page Glossary, “The Old and Obscure Words Explained”, at the end of the volume. This copy with fine provenance, with the engraved bookplate of Oliver Huckel, published author and authority on Richard Wagner. Huckel was the translator into English of such works as ‘Tannhauser’ and ‘Parsifal’. With the plate of the Brooklyn Public Library (now deaccessioned) noting it was purchased with the gift of Alexander M. White. his nation and the free world together throughout the horrors of that conflict. He was a prolific writer, as this 6 volume set will attest, and in 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in spite of the fact that the work was not yet published in full. In that same year he was distinguished further by being made Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth II. . $1250.

King Rat - First Edition - James Clavell - 1962 The Author’s First and Most Collectable Novel 14 Clavell, James. KING RAT (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1962) First Edition, preceding the UK issue by one year. 8vo, publisher’s original cream boards lettered on the spine in dark green, in the original dustjacket. A very nice copy of this scarce debut novel, with only a bit of mellowing to the boards as can be expected due to their colour, a bit of spotting to the fore-edge and top edge, the jacket in a very pleasing state of preservation, bright and clean with only very minimal evidence of shelving. THE AUTHOR’S DEBUT NOVEL, HIS MOST COLLECTABLE AND ALSO CONSIDERED BY MANY HIS BEST. KING RAT is his semi-fictional account based on his own experiences in a Japanese prison camp near Singapore during the final days of the war. The initial printing was only 7500 copies, but it soon would be an international bestseller and would in less then three years be turned into a motion picture by Bryan Forbes and starring George Segal. KING RAT is also the first in what would become the author’s epic decades-spanning “Asian Saga” that would include TAI-PAN, SHOGUN, NOBLE HOUSE and GAI-JIN. $650.

The History of the Navy of the United States James Fenimore Cooper - An American Classic - First Edition A Gentleman’s Set Very Handsomely Bound 15 Cooper, J.[ames] Fenimore. THE HISTORY OF THE NAVY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (London: Richard Bentley, 1839) 2 volumes. First Edition, English Issue. With engraved frontispiece portraits of Commodore Perry and Stephen Decatur, engraved portrait of Commodore MacDonough and charts of Plattsburg Bay and Tripoli. Tall 8vo, in very fine bindings of contemporary full navy blue calf, the covers beautifully paneled in gilt and blind featuring a detailed triple gilt fillet outer frame enclosing a roll tooled border, a large gilt framed panel with elaborate gilt tooled and decorated corner pieces, double gilt lines connecting the corner tooling, the spines with multi-gilt ruled raised bands between elaborately gilt tooled paneled compartments, two compartments with dark maroon gilt lettered and ruled morocco labels, board edges and turn-ins gilt tooled, endpapers and page edges marbled. A beautiful set, wonderfully preserved in bindings reflecting fine provenance. The text is extremely fresh and clean, the bindings with only very minor age evident along the edges and joints, very handsome, bright and proper. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF THIS VERY FINE WORK and “the single most important and influential American naval history down to the publication of Alfred Thayer Mahan’s writings on sea power, beginning in 1890” - Robert Madison, Northwestern University. This British printing is of higher quality then its American counterpart and was published so closely with it that the June 1839 issue of Athenaeum mistakenly reported the Bentley issue being first. Cooper began his maritime career first as a common sailor in the American merchant fleet where he experienced sailors being impressed into the Royal Navy first hand. Because Cooper had conducted himself well as a sailor, his father, a former U.S. Congressman, easily secured a Naval commission for his son through his long standing connections with various politicians and naval officials. The warrant for Cooper’s commission as midshipman was signed by President Jefferson and mailed by Naval Secretary Robert Smith. Cooper’s first naval assignment came in March 21, 1808, aboard the USS Vesuvius, an 82 foot bomb ketch that carried twelve guns and a thirteen inch mortar. He would serve for several years. His years and experiences in the Navy greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. $1450.

Edward J. Detmold’s Scarce Arabian Nights A Pristine Copy in the Original Publisher’s Gift Box 16 [Detmold, E. J. illus.]. THE ARABIAN NIGHTS. Tales from the Thousand and One Nights (London: Hodder & Stoughton, n.d. (1924)) First edition. With 12 beautiful mounted colour plates by Edward J. Detmold with the original tissue guards with captions. Large 4to, publisher’s original white buckram decorated with elaborate all-over gilt pictorial designs and lettering on the upper cover and the spine, in the rare publisher’s box printed on the upper cover in gray/green and with a pastedown Detmold colourplate. An extremely fine copy, as near as pristine as could be hoped for, clearly this book has only rarely been outside its original box, the plates fresh and perfect, the gilt on the binding and the white cloth essentially as new, the prelim leaves only with just faint traces of the foxing which commonly plagues this title. The rare box is very attractive, the lid skillfully, unobtusively and sympathetically reinforced with binders cloth, as are the corners of the box. A STUNNING COPY, WE CAN’T REALLY IMAGINE ONE BETTER, THE BOOK VERY SCARCE AND IN THIS CONDITION EXCEPTIONALLY RARE. Detmold’s illustrations are rich with color and reflect well the oriental splendor of the tales. THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is one of Detmold’s most elusive titles and is one of the finest examples of the artist’s abilities. His 12 colour plates to such well loved stories as ‘Sindbad, ‘Ali Baba’ and ‘Aladddin’ rank among the best of illustrations from a period often considered the golden age of illustrated literature. Despite the effort taken on the part of the publisher to produce these beautiful books they have always been prone to foxing, and the use of white cloth has always been risky. Thus, copies are typically found with considerable mellowing and soiling. This copy we dare say has spent very little time outside of the box which has protected it so well for nearly a century and is truly an exception to the general rule. $2750.

(Basel: Hieronymus Froben e Nikolaus Episcopius, 1533) The Editio Princeps, the first printing of the work in the original Greek. Greek and roman type. Woodcut printer’s device of Johann Froben by Hans Holbein der Jünger [The Younger] on the title-page and on fol. CC4v (Heitz-Bernoulli 50). Woodcut decorated headpieces, decorated and animated initials on black ground, from different alphabets designed by Holbein; on fol. a1r 8-line initial, showing Heraclitus and Democritus, from the capital Latin alphabet of May 1520 drawn by Holbein and by Jacob Faber (cfr. Hollstein’s German, xivB, n. 119). 4to (210x146 mm), in a very rarely encountered contemporary binding of Dutch blind-tooled leather over wooden boards. Provenance: John Alfred Spranger (1889-1968; book-plate on front pastedown and stamp on title-page). EXTREMELY RARE FIRST PRINTING OF THE EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THIS REMARKABLY IMPORTANT BOOK AND A COPY WHICH IS OF THE VERY FINEST STATE AND CONDITION. The editio princeps of Diogenes Laertius’ Lives of the Famous Philosophers, is the most important source of our knowledge in the history of Greek philosophy, from Thales to Pyrrho. The text was known only in the Latin translation by Ambrogio Traversari (1386-1439), which made its first appearance in print in Rome around 1472 and which was widely reprinted during the fourteenth and the first decades of the sixteenth century. This is the first printing of the book in its original language. The edition is dedicated by the typographers Froben and Episcopius to the scholars, and in their epistle they declare their publishing plan: to print at least a work per year able to combine usefulness and pleasure. The text follows a manuscript provided by the professor of Greek and Hebrew at the University of Wittenberg Matthaeus Goldhahn (1480-1553), called Aurigallus, probably a copy of the codex Raudnitzianus Lobkowicensis vi.F.c.38, at the time preserved in Komotau (Bohemie), in the house of the politician Bohuslav Lobkowitz von Hassenstein (c. 1460-1510), and presently in the Library Národní Knihovna of Prague. $19,500.

and gilt bordered sectional compartment lettered in gilt, the endpapers and page edges marbled. A fine and very attractive set of this great work. The pages are still clean and fresh and the fine bindings are sturdy and solid and very well preserved. A VERY HANDSOME SET IN MOROCCO BINDINGS. Dore’s huge and spectacular illustrations bring Dante’s visions to life in a style and manner to satisfy artistic appetites both subtle and grotesque. A truly grand example of the art of metal plate engraving. The sheer mass of the text blocks in these magnificent folios has left many copies broken or disbound. This set is unusually sturdy and tight and uncommonly clean as well. $2450.

The binding extremely handsome with just a touch of nearly invisible and highly expert restoration along the hinges as is often the case due to the massive text blocks. RARE LIMITED EDITION AND THE SUPER FOLIO PRINTING IN THE MOST DELUXE BINDING ISSUED. One of the most magnificent of the Doré illustrated books. A huge testament to Doré’s talent and a most impressive set in size and scope. These books are not commonly found in such condition due to the stress caused by the bulk of the text, but this copy is nearly as mint, and pristine, bright and solid as the day it was made and surely as beautiful a copy as one can possibly hope to find. $4500.

Doré’s Breathtaking London - Elusive and Important A Copy with Fine Provenance - Handsomely Bound One of Doré’s Most Scarce and Beautiful Works 22 Doré, Gustave and Jerrold, [William] Blanchard. LONDON. A Pilgrimage (London: Grant & Co., 1872) First edition of “Doré’s chef d’oeuvre” (Bland). A publisher’s presentation copy with manuscript inscription to Parisian art dealer Georges Petit, one of the most formidable and important promoters of Impressionist artists. Petit represented and promoted Doré from time to time and his gallery sold on occasion Doré’s most important paintings such as Les Océanides (Les Naiades de la mer), which it sold in 1912. Also with 20th century provenance of Scottish literary agent and author, Giles Alexander Esme Gordon. With one hundred and eighty fantastical engraved illustrations by Gustave Doré, many of which are full size plates. Large Folio, finely bound, most likely for Giles Gordon, in three-quarter green morocco and marbled boards in period style. The spine with flat bands ruled in gilt and with elegant central gilt tools, lettered in two compartments and at the tail, corner-pieces and backing gilt ruled where the meet the fine marbled paper. A unique and very handsome copy, the binding very fine with only the minor evidence of shelving on the lower edge, very fine and attractive, internally, very solid and strong, a little mellowing to a few leaves from use or age. FIRST EDITION OF WHAT MANY CONSIDER TO BE DORE’S MOST IMPORTANT AND FANTASTICAL WORK, AND THIS A PUBLISHER’S PRESENTATION COPY TO A HIGHLY IMPORTANT FRENCH ART DEALER AND PROMOTER. This is also one of Doré’s less common works, rarely encountered and a superb example of his talent. “Doré’s devastating realization of the contrast of wealth and poverty in a modern metropolis makes LONDON one of the great illustrated books of the world. The English edition antedates the French by four years, and indeed it is a handsomer book” (Ray). Ruari McLean, in his book VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN, says of it: “...perhaps the finest and most original book of monochrome wood engraving published in London during this period was the work of a Frenchman, Gustave Doré. This was his LONDON, A PILGRIMAGE... [Doré’s illustrations] make the English illustrations of the sixties look puny.” The engraved illustrations and accompanying text show many aspects of the city, but dwell on the picturesque clutter and the squalor of the poorer districts. ‘Jerrold, whose text accompanies the plates, was a well known London journalist who conceived the work and accompanied the artist in exploring London--sometimes with special police protection. Doré was able to explore the vitality and ruthlessness of Victorian London and depict these conditions through his extraordinary graphics.’ McLean, Victorian Book Design; Garvery, The Artist and the Book; Ray, English 207; Muir, Victorian Illustrated Books pp. 225-227 $3250.

FIRST EDITION, GEORGE ELIOT’S (Mary Anne Evans) FIRST PUBLISHED FICTION AND THE FIRST WORK PUBLISHED UNDER THE GEORGE ELIOT PSEUDONYM. A collection of three short stories. Her partner, G. H. Lewes, in order to help her get her stories written and published, arranged for John Blackwood to publish these first tentative efforts claiming them to be written by a ‘friend’ named George Eliot. The stories first appeared in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine throughout 1857 and were then first published in book form, as here, in January of 1858. In this complete form it was met with ‘just and discerning applause’, and considerable speculation as to the identity of its author. Charles Dickens was among the first to suggest the author may have actually been a woman. Industrialist and noted book collector Robert Hoe was preeminent among American producers of printing presses. He was one of the organizers and first president of the Grolier Club, the well-known New York organization for the promotion of bookmaking as an art. His collection of rare books and manuscripts at the time of his death in 1909 was valued at several million dollars. Sadleir 818. $3750.

The First Printing in America of an Iconic Work T.S. Eliot - The Waste Land - 1922 One of the Most Important and Influential Poems of the Century 27 [Eliot, T. S.]. “THE WASTE LAND,” included in THE DIAL, November 1922 (New York: (Dial Publishing), November 1922) The First Printing in the United States of T.S. Eliot’s great poem, The Waste Land; Volume LXXII, Number 5. 8vo, publisher’s original printed wraps. A very nice and well preserved copy with some of the usual edgewear. AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Includes the first American publication of Eliot’s “The Waste Land” which was published a month earlier in London in “the Criterion Magazine”. The journal also includes a play by W. B. Yeats, drawings by Picasso, a epistolary piece by Ezra Pound and works by Sherwood Anderson, Malcolm Cowley and Bertrand Russell. “THE WASTE LAND” is one of the most important and influential poems of the twentieth century. Eliot’s maudlin verse caught perfectly the perplexed despair of the age, when secure, shared religious beliefs and confidence in the power of human reasoning were more or less dissolved by the increasing influence of Darwin, Freud, Marx, and the devastating experience of the First World War. “The Wasteland,” like Joyce’s ULYSSES, “became part of an age that cannot be understood without it” (Columbia Literary History of the U.S.). $1850.

THE THREE BRITISH EVEREST EXPEDITIONS OF THE 1920’S, SCARCE IN SUCH EXCELLENT CONDITION AND IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH BINDINGS GILT. The British made it a point of national pride to scale the mighty Everest, and the saga of their quest makes for fascinating reading. Despite the fact that each of the three expeditions here narrated were unable to conquer the mountain, each expedition added to the knowledge and experience that would ultimately help others conquer the summit. Each volume includes a variety of interesting field notes on subjects like wildlife, acclimatization, Tibetan culture, natural history, geology and glaciology, and organization of the expeditions, altogether making an intriguing read. Complete sets of these books have become especially difficult to come by. As the books were issued over a period of years, it has become nearly impossible to gather together a group matching in condition as are these. A very desirable set. $3450.

Bound in Handsome Antique Calf - London - 1819 The Rare Memoirs of the Court of Louis XIV Drawn from Contemporary Sources 30 [French Court; Lathy, Thomas P.]. MEMOIRS OF THE COURT OF LOUIS XIV. Comprising Biography and Anecdotes of the Most Celebrated Characters of that Period, Styled the Augustan Era of France (London: For Matthew Iley, 1819) RARE FIRST EDITION, copies are known with both 1819 and 1820 imprints but are likely one edition with a variant title-page. Including both imprints OCLC lists only 27 copies in institutional holdings worldwide. Illustrated with four “splendid embellishments”, being fine engraved portrait plates printed by Iley in London but captioned in French. Tall 8vos, in handsome antique three-quarter black calf over marbled boards, the spines with gilt ruled bands trimmed in blind, contrasting red and green morocco labels gilt ruled and lettered, marbled endpapers. A beautiful set in excellent state of preservation, complete, solid, sturdy and attractive inside and out. RARE FIRST EDITON OF THIS HIGHLY REGARDED COMPILATION ON THE FRENCH COURT OF LOUIS XIV. The work is derived from broad sources, including contemporary letters, memoirs and correspondences and is also partly copied from the noted diarist Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon. Historically, it serves like a ‘who’s who’ of the late 17th and early 18th centuries covering everything from significant historic events to minor court gossip. It includes a very early account of ‘the man with the iron mask’, which the author notes as being an extraordinary event with no parallel in history and yet remarkably unmentioned by historians. The author comments on speculation (largely by Voltaire) that the prisoner was a son of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin, and therefore an illegitimate half-brother of King Louis XIV. Decades later, writer Alexandre Dumas elaborated on that idea in the final installment of his Three Musketeers saga. While Lathy’s sources may be commendable little here is believed to be his own writing much beyond that of the dedication to the Prince Regent. In the same year that these memoirs were published Lathy was also involved in a scandalous act of plagiarism. He published a poem on Angling (which included a whole-length portrait of himself, armed with rod and net) which was quickly discovered to have been copied in whole from an obscure 1773 work by Dr. Thomas Scott, and was proven as such by Scott’s great-nephew in the ‘Gentleman’s Magazine’. DNB; $495.

An Superior Set in the Publisher’s Deluxe Bindings Ulysses S. Grant - “The Finest Memoirs of War Ever Penned” 31 Grant, U.S. PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT (New York: Charles L. Webster and Co., 1885, 1886) 2 volumes. First edition of both volumes in publisher’s deluxe bindings. With 49 maps and illustrations, including two steel-engraved frontispiece portraits and two etched views, all with tissue-guards. Also with the dedication from Grant in holograph facsimile. Tall, thick 8vo, publisher’s very scarce deluxe bindings of original threequarter morocco over boards, gilt lettered and finely decorated with gilt emblematic decorations in compartments of the spines separated by raised bands, the covers featuring large gilt medallions, all edges marbled. A handsome and pleasing set in the scarce publisher’s deluxe binding state. An unusually well preserved set. Essentially fine with some minimal evidence of age, but without question, a handsome, tight, clean and collectible copy, very well preserved indeed. RARE FIRST EDITION IN UNUSUALLY NICE CONDITION. VERY SCARCE IN THIS FORMAT AND DELUXE BINDING STATE. ‘THE FINEST MEMOIRS OF WAR EVER PENNED’. An important historical memoir of the Civil War, arguably the most important, and the best thing that Grant ever wrote. General Norman Schwartzkopf has recently called this the finest memoir of war experiences that has ever been penned. Collectible copies of these books are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Copies in this binding, especially so. Probably the most important book on the American Civil War, and in many respects a masterpiece of American literature. David Eicher”s useful summary includes this fine judgment: “Grant’s MEMOIRS comprise one of the most valuable writings by a military commander in history . . . The work is genuinely that of the commander. As such, it is valuable in its scope, its plain and clear analysis and language, and its broad conclusions about the conduct of the war. $1750.

Nathaniel Hawthorne - 1851 The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables 32 Hawthorne, Nathaniel. THE SCARLET LETTER, and THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES. Complete in One Volume (London: George Routledge & Co., 1851) First Combined Edition and the Second English printing overall of each title, issued together for Routlege’s Standard Novels series. With an illustration by John Gilbert featuring Hester Prynne with Pearl standing before the stocks. 8vo, publisher’s very handsome, original dark green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine and blind-stamped in an elaborate overall design on the covers. This is the binding variant for Routledge’s Standard Novels. A lovely and very fresh copy of this rare issuance, the text extremely clean and fresh, only the frontispiece with some spotting as might be typical with the paper used, the cloth very clean and bright and sturdy and with only the most trivial signs of age. A really superior copy of this rare book. VERY SCARCE, the pirated editions of each work produced by George Routledge to compete with Bohn’s editions. The sheets of both printings were distributed in various formats, this being the combined issue for the Standard Novels series. THE SCARLET LETTER here was printed only one year after the true first edition printed by Ticknor and Fields in America and THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES is printed in the same year as the first. Together, these two novels present Hawthorne at his best and offer his two most famous and important books. His story of Hester Prynne is considered by most to be his magnum opus. A literary masterpiece and surely one of the most important works in the oeuvre of colonial America, it, more than any other work of literature set the stage for an understanding of the puritan mind and beginnings of the American system. Both Bohn’s and Routlege’s 1851 editions were piracies, a circumstance not uncommon in transatlantic literature at the time, and the two companies competition for sales of this title is a testament to Hawthorne’s popularity. There were only a handful of American authors who were given much credence or esteem by English publishers of the time. But Hawthorne was unquestionably one of the few, and this was perhaps his most popular book. THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES is a pillar of nineteenth-century American literature, a staple of Gothic literature, and a major influence on later authors of both the horror and mystery genres. Clark A16.5.a and Clark A17.3.a $1750.

based upon the book. This is a splendid, handsome copy of an enduring masterpiece. A personal narrative of the revolt of Arab armies against the Turks during the First World War, SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM stands as a monument of modern literature and history. Bernard Shaw described the book as one of the greatest of our time. All earlier printings were private and done with very low limitations on the printing, thus they are now very scarce. This is the first edition that was printed for general circulation. O’Brien A042 $695.

The Memoirs of Robert E. Lee The Finest of All the Contemporary Accounts 42 [Lee, Robert E.]; Long, A. L. MEMOIRS OF ROBERT E. LEE. HIS MILITARY AND PERSONAL HISTORY Embracing A Large Amount Of Information Hitherto Unpublished....Together With Incidents Relating To His Private Life Subsequent To The War. Collected and Edited with the Assistance of Marcus J. Wright. (New York: J. M. Stoddart and Company, 1887) First Edition, Second Issue. Illustrated throughout with a facsimile of General Long’s handwriting, an engraved portrait frontispiece of Lee, a number of other plates, a large and folding map, and seven other maps showing Lee’s original field maps. Large, thick 8vo, publisher’s original dark green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and upper cover. A very handsome copy, the cloth bright and deep green with no fading whatsoever, internally as nice a copy as one could hope for, with no evidence of the foxing and toning usual to the book, front pastedown and free-fly with light breakage, the binding strong. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK. ‘General Lee, less fortunate than Grant, was overtaken by death before he could complete his design of writing and publishing to the world his personal narrative of the important events in which he figured. This work has been considered the consummation of that intention, with General Long who having served under General Lee, being chosen as the writer. Thus, the MEMOIRS has become as nearly autobiographical as would be possible. Lee had desired to write a history of the campaigns in Virginia, but had never been able to commence the task. He had begun to collect materials for the purpose shortly after the cessation of hostilities, but died in 1870 before ever setting a pen to paper other than to communicate in letters his desire to have this history written, both to honour the character and people of the South and to lay out the history of the War from the Southern perspective. Long’s narrative includes contributions made by Lee’s family as well as from Lee’s own notes made at the time of each particular occurence. Long had been intimate with Lee, serving as his military secretary and had earlier graduated from West Point. Lee himself wrote of Long that his conduct in the war had been marked by zeal and gallantry serving as chief of artillary in the winter of 1861-62 and then to the command of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was promoted to Brigadier in 1863 adn served until the surrender of the army on 9 April, 1865. Long was influenced in the writing of the volume by Lee’s letters, by legitimate subjects of record as confirmed by Lee’s reports as well as by a great number of confidential letters and dispatches which form the only official record of the movements and operations of the Army of Northern Virginia for the period.’ The work has always been considered to be the finest of all the contemporary accounts. $850.

Abraham Lincoln by Carl Sandburg A Beautifully Bound Set of All Six Volumes of the Work A Pulitzer Prize Winner and Literary Masterpiece 43 [Lincoln, Abraham]; Sandburg, Carl. ABRAHAM LINCOLN: THE PRAIRIE YEARS and THE WAR YEARS (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company , ca. 1926-1943) 6 volumes. Early issues of THE WAR YEARS and in the matching format of THE PRAIRIE YEARS. With 426 half-tones of photographs, and 244 cuts of cartoons, letters and documents, and with over 100 maps, additional photographs, and facsimiles. Large 8vo, beautifully bound in three-quarter red crushed morocco for Charles E. Lauriat, the spines righly gilt with raised bands gilt tooled, separating the compartments, which are lettered in two panels and decorated in the remaing four with gilt ornamental devices at the centers, sides with gilt lines bordering the morocco, t.e.g. A very fine, pleasing and handsome set, the bindings very attractive with very little indication of use, internally uncommonly fresh with no foxing whatsoever. AN EXTREMELY PLEASING AND FINELY BOUND SET OF THIS CLASSIC WORK, STILL THE BEST AND MOST DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF THE GREAT AMERICAN PRESIDENT. Carl Sandburg was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his Complete Poems (1950), and then again for his Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (1939). The Prairie Years’ covers Lincoln’s life from his birth to his first inauguration. Originally printed in two volumes, the author himself has this to say about this edition, “I first planned this book for one large volume. When completed, however, it was necessary for initial publication to issue it in two... It is [here] made available to a large part of the public I had in mind all the time.” The War Years covers the Civil War period until Lincoln’s death by assassination shortly after war’s end. In a real sense, this is the definitive biography of Lincoln, illustrated with photographs and reproductions of paintings, drawings and sketches. Carl Sandburg felt a close tie to Abraham Lincoln because of similar childhood experiences. Sandburg’s and Lincoln’s youths had not been easy. Their understanding of the common man was mutual. Each in his own lifetime would think of himself as a common man, a struggler from among ordinary people, according to one historian. Sandburg put it this way: “There’s a certain level of human existence below which one must sometime have lived if one is to really know the ways of the masses.” $2250.

sparkling. Only light evidence of use or age. A BRIGHT SET AND AN IMPORTANT WORK. Perhaps the finest, most accurate, and detailed biography of Lord Admiral Nelson ever published. Nelson, of course, is known for his illustrious naval career which culminated at the battle of Trafalgar, where under his command the English decimated the Napoleonic fleet and prevented them from reaching the Continent. Mahan, a captain in the United States Navy, was one of the greatest naval historians of the 19th and early 20th centuries and serves the life of Nelson well in this finely crafted narrative. $750.

FIRST EDITION DELUXE OF THIS BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK OF ONE OF THE GREATEST CEREMONIAL PROCEEDINGS FROM THE AGE OF BRITISH IMPERIAL INDIA. The Menpes recorded in words and paintings their experiences from Camp Number One during the Coronation Durbar, held in Delhi to celebrate the accession of Edward VII to the British throne and title of Emperor of India. This ceremony was presided over by the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. This was the second of the Delhi Durbars, which were great ceremonial gatherings held as demonstrations of loyalty to the crown. The first was held in 1877 for the proclamation of Queen Victoria as the first Empress of India. The second was far more splendid with increased ceremony and grandeur. The two full weeks of festivities were devised in meticulous detail by Lord Curzon. It was a dazzling display of pomp, power and split-second coordination. Neither its predecessor nor the Durbar held in 1911 could match the pageantry of Lord Curzon’s 1903 festivities. Mempes’ paintings include many portraits, military processionals, shows, events, marches and state functions. While very impressive in artist talent and style, they are also historically important artifacts of one of the grandest moments of the British Empire at its pinnacle. $1650.

Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing - First Edition One of the Most Important Texts of the Time Ideas Which Revolutionized Practices Across the World 48 Nightingale, Florence. NOTES ON NURSING: What it is and What it is not. (London: Harrison, (1860)) First edition, an early issue. “The first edition of this little book was undated, and there has been some doubt as to which of the many issues was the earliest. Sir Edward Cook ascribes it to 1869, an obvious misprint for 1859. However, although “Notes on Nursing” was advertised in the “Publisher’s Circular” for Dec 1859 it was probably not available until the early weeks of Jan 1860, as the earliest review so far discovered appeared on Jan 21st” (Bishop &Godie P15). This copy has yellow endpapers with the advertisements in 2nd setting, first state; it is without “The Right of Translation is Reserved” below the title imprint; the signature letter “D” is present on page 33 and with mixed corrections of typographical errors. The bibliographer Victor Skretkowicz who had examined over 100 copies stated “Virtually all copies examined are made up of different combinations of sheets in many varying states. The binding together of mixtures of sheets in different states occurs almost immediately, possibly within hours of beginning production. Given the considerable number of different states of each inner and outer form in every sheet, the idea of attempting to establish with certainty any specific ‘issue’ beyond the first is utterly impractical” (The Library. Mar 1993) Slim 8vo, publisher’s original textured bead cloth binding, ruled borders on covers, gilt lettering on upper cover, end-papers with advertising. A very fresh and well preserved copy, the text is in surprisingly good order as virtually all of these first editions were sold for use within the profession. The binding still quite attractive and still sturdy, one thread connecting the text-block to the binding is defective showing a small separation at the meeting of the end-leaves at the inner hinge. VERY SCARCE IN SUCH NICE CONDITION, AND THE LANDMARK TITLE OF AN ENTIRE PROFESSION. When Florence Nightingale began her studies in nursing, England’s own healthcare system was behind that of other countries. Consequently, Nightingale set about reforming nursing locally. It was in 1854 with the report of the sufferings in Crimea that Florence Nightingale took on her “trumpet-call of duty” and went off to work at the large barrack-hospital at Scutari. “Within a few months of her arrival at Scutari, the mortality rate among soldiers there fell from 42% to2%. Florence Nightingale went on to become the greatest figure in the history of nursing.” [Garrison and Morton 1612]. She remained there until Turkey was evacuated by the British in 1856, and quietly returned back to England, so as not to be part of the fanfare that was planned for her in London. With the money she raised in recognition of her services, she founded the Nightingale Home for training nurses at St. Thomas’s and King’s College Hospitals. ‘According to Nightingale, nursing ought to signify the proper use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet, and the selection and administration of diet - all at the least expense of vital force to the patient’. When the Crimean War broke out, Nightingale was invited to investigate hospital conditions in the Crimea. Because of her efforts and management of others, the death rate eventually decreased. At the end of the war, in 1856, she established a Royal Commission on the Army (officially established in May, 1857). She subsequently published a detailed record of her experiences about nursing and what was needed to reform nursing in the army. Among other things, she emphasized the importance of clean air, good light, warmth, cleanliness, absence of noise and a healthy diet. This particular text deals with these themes and nursing itself. At the end, Nightingale exhorts women to do as much as they can and not define their efforts in terms of either the equality of men and women or the alleged differences between them. Rather, they should simply do as much as they can. Because of this report and her management of the Royal Commission, many reforms were enacted in the field of health. However, as PMM notes, “the reforms thus instituted spread far beyond the confines of theBritish Army and have revolutionized hospital practice throughout the world.” $1850.

Dumas Classic Adventure - The Three Musketeers A Fine Edition Illustrated in Colour by R. B. Ogle - Very Scarce 49 [Ogle, Illus.] Dumas, Alexandre. THE THREE MUSKETEERS (London: John Hamilton Limited, N.D., circa 1935) First edition thus. VERY SCARCE. With eight impressive colourplates by R. B. Ogle. Tall 8vo [10 by 7 inches], in the original blue cloth lettered and decorated on the upper cover and spine in black, in the scarce original dustjacket which features a colour illustration by Ogle to the upper cover and additional illustrative decorations in black to the cover and spine panels. Also preserved here is an original publisher’s printed paper band wrap announcing a special price for the book. A bright and clean copy of the book, quite fine but for the lightest of mellowing to the prelims, the cloth also fresh and well preserved, the white paper jacket still very attractive with some expected mellowing and edgewear and with some chipping to the tips of the spine and corners. A HANDSOME ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC. Unlike many illustrated editions of Dumas popular masterpiece the text as provided here is not rewritten or simplified for children. Richard B. Ogle was a popular illustrator who studied art at the Royal Acadamy Schools where his tutors included John Singer Sargent and Solomon J. Solomon. An obituary in The Times noted that Ogle “did not attain the eminence of some of his contemporaries, but he enjoyed the reputation of being an artist who could always be trusted to bring to his work sound draughtsmanship, painstaking attention to detail and a wealth of artistic ideas.” $195.

curred tens years after their marriage but only one day after her coronation, she acted as regent for her son, King Louis XIII of France, until he came of age. Hours after Henry’s assassination, she was confirmed as regent by the Parliament of Paris. Her first act as regent was to immediately banish Henry’s mistress Catherine Henriette de Balzac d’Entragues from the court. She was noted for both her ceaseless political intrigues and her extensive artistic patronage. The construction and furnishing of the Palais du Luxembourg, which she referred to as her “Palais Médicis”, formed the major artistic project during her regency. The site was purchased in 1612 and construction began in 1615, to designs of Salomon de Brosse. Her court painter was Peter Paul Rubens. Along with being mother to King Louis XIII of France, she had five other children with Henry. Her eldest daughter was Elisabeth, Queen of Spain and her youngest Henrietta Maria, Queen of England. $495.

The Best Plato in English The Dialogues - Jowett’s Translations - Published at Oxford The Most Revered Translation - A Fine Set 51 Plato, (427–347 BC). THE DIALOGUES OF PLATO Translated Into English With Analyses and Introduction by B[enjamin] Jowett (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1931) 5 volumes. The third edition, new impression. 8vo, publisher’s original maroon polished cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spines and stamped in blind with panel designs on the covers, each volume housed in the rare dustjackets. A very fine set, fresh and clean and very handsome withal, the cloth protected by the dustjackets and thus very fresh and especially well preserved, the jackets somewhat mellowed by age and shelving. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK AND the best edition of the best translation. Jowett was a great favorite at Oxford University and most famous for his classical translations. Robert Lynd wrote of him in 1925 that “Jowett is one of the few (writers who have the luck to go down to posterity as satellites of the supreme men of genius), and it not likely that for many generations to come English readers will be able to think of Plato without thinking of Jowett’s Plato. He aimed in his translation at producing the effect of an original work...” He accomplished this, not at the sake of scholarship or accuracy, and was able to translate the current of life that runs throughout this great masterpiece. These are considered to be by far the best translations of Plato’s DIALOGUES. This revised edition contains a new general Preface which recounts the history of the work and gives some appreciation of Jowett’s involvement in the study of Plato. As well, there is marginal analysis and an index of subjects and proper names. The sequence of the Dialogues has been changed, and there are other minor changes of form, and textually very few alterations were made but for important corrections and additions. $850.

With a book which gave to the world such characters as Betsy Trotwood, Micawber, the Pegottys and Mr. Dick, to mention only a few, it would have been strange if it had been otherwise” (Eckel, p. 77). Reynolds’ twenty fine colour plates bring these characters vividly to life. $325.

South - A Core Work in Antarctic Literature Shackleton’s Expedition of 1914-1917 57 Shackleton, Ernest. SOUTH: The Story of Shackleton’s Last Expedition 1914-1917 (New York: Macmillan Company, 1920) First American Edition. With a color frontispiece, 87 illustrations from photos and drawings, and a folding map at the rear. Tall 8vo, original ribbed green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and cover. An unusually bright and fine copy, the green cloth unfaded and fresh, the text fine indeed. ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS IN THE SOUTH POLAR OEUVRE. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST EPICS IN THE HISTORY OF ANTARCTIC TRAVEL AND ONE OF THE MOST HARROWING TALES EVER PENNED OF RESCUE AND HUMAN TRIUMPH. SOUTH is the story of Shackleton’s failed attempt, after learning of Amundsen’s attainment of the South Pole, to be the first to cross the last continent from sea to sea. The first editions of this book have truly become quite scarce and are rarely found in as nice condition as seen here. “The story of our attempt is the subject for the following pages, and I think that though failure in the actual accomplishment must be recorded, there are chapters in this book of high adventure, strenuous days, lonely nights, unique experiences, and above all, records of unflinching determination, supreme loyalty, and generous self-sacrifice on the part of my men which, even in these days that have witnessed the sacrifices of nations and regardlessness of self on the part of individuals, still will be of interest to readers who now turn gladly from the red horror of war and the strain of the last five years to read, perhaps with more understanding minds, the tale of the White Warfare of the South. The struggles, the disappointments, and the endurance of this small party of Britishers, hidden away for nearly two years in the fastnesses of the Polar ice, striving to carry out the ordained task and ignorant of the crises through which the world was passing, make a story which is unique in the history of Antarctic exploration.” - Shackleton from the Preface. $2250.

Early American Issue of Shakespeare’s Plays - 1836 Handsomely Bound in Period Decorated Morocco 58 Shakespeare, William. THE DRAMATIC WORKS AND POEMS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, with Notes, Original and Selected, and Introductory Remarks to Each Play, By Samuel Weller Singer, F.S.A. and A LIFE OF THE POET By Charles Symmons, D.D. in Two Volumes. (New York: George Dearborn, 1836) 2 volumes. First of the edition and a very early American issue. Engraved frontispiece of the Bard and many black and white engravings throughout. Tall 8vo, three quarter contemporary black straight-grain morocco over green pebbled cloth boards, the spine with raised bands gilt lined and decorated, lettered in gilt in two compartments, marbled endpapers. A very handsome and attractive early American issuance of Shakespeare’s works, with only light aging. A very well preserved set. “The object then of the present publication is to afford the general reader a correct edition of Shakespeare, accompanied by an abridged commentary, in which all superfluous and refuted explanations and conjectures, and all controversies and squabbles of contending critics should be omitted; and such elucidations only of obsolete words and obscure phrases, and such critical illustrations of the text as might be deemed most generally useful be retained” [preface]. And so it accomplishes its goal. The editor also includes a section on the life of Shakespeare, an elegy written by Ben Jonson, and a reprint of the Bard’s famous will in which he bequeaths to his wife his “second best bed, with the furniture.” A nice early American set. $695.

Henry M. Stanley’s Great Narrative - London - 1890 In Darkest Africa - Handsome in Original Decorated Cloth 59 Stanley, Henry M. IN DARKEST AFRICA, or the Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria (London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, 1890) 2 volumes. First edition. Portrait frontispieces, 36 full page illustrations, over 100 illustrations in text, 2 large color folding maps at front, 1 folding map in text, 1 diagram. 8vo, publisher’s original brick red cloth gilt-lettered and with elaborate pictorial decorations in gilt and black on the spines and upper covers. A handsome and well preserved set. An honest set. The cloth is attractive, the gilt and the black and green used in the overall cover and spine designs are bright and strong in appearance, there is a bit of light spotting to the covers of Vol. II, the foxing to the paper is minimal and confined primarily to the frontal matter, a pleasing set. ONE OF THE PRINCIPLE WRITINGS OF ONE OF THE GREATEST EXPLORERS OF THE DARK CONTINENT. Though the publisher calls this the third edition, it is actually a reprinting of the first edition. The work is the original report to the Emin Pasha Relief Committee and the funding group for the expedition, one of the most important of all African exploratory adventures. Stanley’s journey to Albert Nyanza became a hazardous 160-day march through “nothing but miles and miles, endless miles of forest” that claimed the lives of over half of Stanley’s men from starvation, disease, and hostility of the natives. Finally upon the arrival at Albert Nyanza, Stanley achieved communication with Emin but was troubled by the non-arrival of his rear-guard. He retraced his steps back to Yambuya to find that Tippoo Tib had broken faith, Barttelot had been murdered, and the camp was in disarray and only one European was left. Stanley again set out for Albert Nyanza, where Stanley, Emin Pasha, and the survivors of the rear-guard began the return journey to Zanzibar by way of Uganda, a trip during which he discovered the Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori), traced the course of the Semliki River, discovered Albert Edward Nyanza and the great southwestern gulf of Victorian Nyanza. Of Stanley’s original 646 men, only 246 survived. This account of his adventures was wildly popular and published in six languages. One of the greatest feats in African travel, Stanley traveled thousands of miles in his claims to the great stretches of continental African territory. $1250.

The account of the author’s travels during his ten years of residence in the Cape. “During his expeditions, Mr. Steedman traversed a great part of the Cape Colony and Kaffaria, penetrating the county up to Griqualand West. He was an industrious and able collector and naturalist, and the volumes contain much valuable information respecting the fauna of the country...The work gives many details respecting early travels in South Africa, with sketches of native races, and their history and wars, the pioneer colonists of Natal &c. “ Steedman’s first journey took him to Port Elizabeth by sea and from there to Grahamstown, where he obtained permission from the military to travel beyond the Keiskamma River (into the Ciskei). Travelling on horseback he visited Fort Wiltshire (some 20 km south of present Alice), visited various local chiefs down to Wesleyville (some 30 km south of present King William’s Town), and returned to Port Elizabeth by more or less the same route. Steedman set out on his third journey in September of 1831 with the intention of reaching Lattakoo (now Dithakong, some 60km north-east of Kuruman), chief town of the Tlhaping, the southernmost Tswana. He sent his ox-waggon on its way and first accompanied a friend to Beaufort West on horseback. From there he travelled to the mission station at Griquatown. Illness prevented him from continuing on to Lattakoo and after recovering he returned to Cape Town in November 1831. During his travels Steedman collected over 300 animals, including some that had not yet been described, as well as ethnographic specimens. In 1833 he returned to England and arranged an exhibition of his animals in the Colosseum, Regent’s Park, London. Mendelssohn 432; Biographical database of South Africa. $1850.

One of John Tenniel’s Earliest Illustrated Books Aesop’s Fables - With Over 100 Woodcut Designs In a Beautiful Scottish Binding Full Morocco Gilt 61 [Tenniel, John, Illus]; Aesop, [Fables]. AESOP’S FABLES: A New Version, Chiefly From Original Sources, By the Rev. Thomas James, M.A. (London: John Murray, 1848) First Edition illustrated by John Tenniel, and one of Tenniel’s earliest books, also the first edition of James’ translation. With over 100 illustrations designed by John Tenniel, the famous illustrator of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice” books. 8vo, in a very fine and handsome contemporary Scottish binding of full brown morocco signed Edmonston and Douglas, the covers paneled in gilt within a wide framework executed in a vine and flower motif with Celtic knots at the corners, this around a large central arabesque centerpiece in blind, additional blind ruling at edges, the spine elaborately gilt tooled with stylized acorns and pine cones in compartments ruled in gilt between gilt stippled raised bands, one compartment gilt lettered, blind hatched board edges, gilt floral turn-ins and gilt page edges finish this wonderful binding. An absolutely beautiful copy, the text being near to pristine and the binding very fine and exceptionally well preserved, the lightest touch of spotting on the blanks and half-title only, otherwise essentially perfect. AN EXCELLENT RENDITION OF AESOP’S FABLES EXTENSIVELY DECORATED THROUGHOUT BY JOHN TENNIEL, ILLUSTRATOR FOR PUNCH, CHARLES DICKENS AND, MOST FAMOUSLY, ‘ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND’. John Tenniel is quite possibly the most famous book illustrator of all time. His classic illustrations are instantly recognized throughout the world and have provided us with some of the most unique and charming characters to ever grace the printed page. THIS EDITION OF AESOP IS ONE OF TENNIEL’S EARLIEST WORKS, published nearly two decades before the first ‘Alice’. Tenniel’s drawings for the book were made into woodcuts by Leopold Martin, they grace nearly every page spread and appear as large text frames, headpieces, and within the text. These early drawings, done in the Nazarene style, display the eye for detail that would be a trademark of the artist still common in his work nearly 50 years later when he was honored as “a living national treasure” and was knighted in 1893 by Queen Victoria. This was the first time such an honour was bequeathed on an illustrator or cartoonist. This is also the first edition of Thomas James’ free verse translations from both the oldest sources which could be traced and the best Continental language versions of the period. His version was especially popular in America and was printed there numerous times. $895.

untrimmed, with all tissue guards as called for. xxxii, 208; 263 pp. A very handsome and very nice set of this important and scarce edition. The bindings are in a fine state of preservation with only very light evidence of mellowing at the spine panels, the tips and extremities are all in very nice condition. With the typical evidence of the foxing usual to Vol. I.. AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. This edition restores some 30,000 words of Thoreau’s manuscript which were cut before the book’s first publication in 1854. This copy is very fresh, internally with only light evidence of the usual foxing, and is largely unopened. The fact that the title-page is in two states provides a nice opportunity to compare side by side the results of etching and engraving. One of the greatest books of American literature and a highlight of American thought. In attempting an experiment in simple living Thoreau became the embodiment of the American quest for the spiritual over the material; and his book, ostensibly a record of his experiment, has earned the reputation as a work of great philosophical import. $950.

The Ballad of Reading Gaol Oscar Wilde’s Last and Most Poignant Work One of 800 Copies Only - The True First Edition - 1898 67 [Wilde, Oscar]. THE BALLAD OF READING GAOL BY C.3.3. (London: Leonard Smithers, 1898) First edition, one of 800 copies printed on handmade paper. 8vo, publisher’s original quarter buff cloth over mustard coloured cloth covered boards, the spine lettered in gilt. A fine copy, only a hint of mellowing to the buff cloth. THE FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 800 COPIES ON FINE, HANDMADE PAPER. Inspired by his experiences while in prison and written while in exile in France, THE BALLAD OF READING GAOL was Wilde’s last artistic gasp. Because of his sobering position at the time, the poem is free from a great deal of the affectation that colored his earlier work. “Had [it] been written a hundred years ago, it would have been printed as a broadside and sold in the streets by the balladmongers; it is so common as that, and so great as that” (Jackson, The Eighteen-Nineties, p. 99). $2950.

VERY SCARCE IN SUCH NICE, BRIGHT CONDITION. The work features the paintings of William Lionel Wyllie, “the most distinguished marine artist of his day.” - National Museum Royal Navy. His work is in the Tate, the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum and many other institutions but Wyllie is perhaps best known for his 42-foot panorama of the Battle of Trafalgar (which was unveiled by King George V) seen by about 100,000 people every year where it still hangs in the Royal Naval Museum within the Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth. The paintings and accompanying text collected here bring to life the busy shipping traffic and bustle of waterside activities along the Thames River from Westminster to ‘the Nore’ at the mouth of the Thames Estuary where the river meets the North Sea. Wyllie was the most distinguished marine artist of his day and his work is still in great demand. From 1906, when he moved to Portsmouth, he became closely associated with the Royal Navy. So much so, indeed, that he was buried with full naval honours in 1931. In a moving ceremony, reminiscent of Nelson’s state funeral in 1806, his body was rowed up Portsmouth Harbour in a naval cutter past battleships with dipped colours and bugles calling and quaysides lined with dockyard workers.. $450.
