From the drop of the gate, it was all about art and performance art, which is another way of just plain saying ‘racing’. It was the summer of 1972 when a father and his 12-year-old son came out to see my parents up in Northern California. The boy was a racer and needed a pair of leathers stitched together. As my mom went to work on them, we went down and splashed around in a creek. While we were both racers, I was moving heavily towards art as he was developing, even at that age, into one of the most colorful, charismatic and talked about riders in all of California. A decade later, he was a legendary racer, while I was starting Troy Lee Designs. One of my first projects? Painting Danny ‘Magoo’ Chandler’s helmets.

When the time came in June to finish up the new 2014 Troy Lee Designs catalog, I found myself as I always do, wondering what the hell I was going to say. Sitting in my office, I looked up and saw a helmet I painted for Danny for the 1982 ABC Superbikers. Seeing it, I thought about my friend, Googled his name, and up came a ton of images. Man alive! The memories, in living color, of Danny helping us start up Troy Lee Designs. That’s when it hit me: To know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been. It’s 2014 and TLD is now 32-years-old; we’re going faster than ever. We’re reaching for another gear, and no way in hell are we slowing down. Ever. Because in racing, you can’t. To stand still is not only finding yourself behind, but even worse, forgotten. All of us at TLD are in a perennial chase for the lead. A deep, urgent desire to be - just as it was for our dear friend Magoo - the best, the boldest and the bravest. That’s what it’s all about. Troy Lee Designs....for the world’s fastest racers. Magoo was one of the first guys I worked with when I started painting helmets. I painted this one in 1982 for him to use at the Superbikers event on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. I handmade that visor in my mom’s oven and made it extra short because I knew how fast he would be going. I didn’t have stickers back then so I used to sign under the visor. On this one, Magoo told me to sign the top. I remember him telling me that if he won, and he had enough money left over, he was going to take his girlfriend to see Bruce Springsteen. I’ll never forget him coming back to the pits after the race and yelling, “I’m going to Springsteen!”

The race team started in Supermoto racing and became an elite organization in the sport thanks to the wins and championships of motocross legend Jeff Ward. Every year, the best and bravest off-road riders in the world head south at breakneck speeds through the Mexican desert in search of glory during the Baja 1000. Not every rider can be victorious, but this helmet will ensure they look good trying. Troy Lee created the SE3 Baja with his trademark “flying eyeball” and the checkered flag that every rider is racing towards for him and his team to wear the year they raced the famed event. DAY IN THE DIRT

The biggest party in the motocross industry has to have a helmet worthy of the event, right? That was the thought process when Troy and his creative team sat down and sketched this design. Metalflake paint, American flags, dancing girls, Steve McQueen and two strips of unraveling film reflect the ideas of the film and stunt communities who continue to support this amazing event. You don’t have to compete at Day in the Dirt to wear this helmet, but once you put this thing on, you are going to want to sign up.

CYCLOPS

The Cyclops line was thought up by our lead designer who was heavily influenced by the horror films of the 1950s. Half beast and half man, the Cyclops was a 50-foot creature created by exposure to radiation. We can’t guarantee that you will be half man and half monster when you line up to race with this helmet, but we promise you’ll look good and be well protected.

This design was inspired by the legendary Ace Cafe in London. Started in 1938 as a roadside café for travelers, the establishment quickly became a hub for motorcyclist gatherings, and would serve as the launchpad for many famous racers and birthplace for many bands. The fusion of bikes, speed and rock ‘n’ roll created the perfect destination for the rebellious, post-war breed of bikers and musicians that would become known as Rockers. The Ace helmet embodies the wild spirit of this non-conformist group and is as unique as the counter-culture they built.

FONDA

Troy is a big fan of Peter Fonda’s Easy Rider character in the 1969 classic. The Captain America bike is something that Troy has drawn on, specifically, when designing this helmet. This AMA Grand National Champion amassed an incredible 161 career finishes over a span of 15 years.
