University at Buffalo Wrestling Wrestling Facilities

The University at Buffalo athletic department recently made major facility renovations to the wrestling complex, the first of such upgrades since Alumni Arena opened its doors in 1982. The $400,000 project brought several improvements to the coaches’ offices, student-athlete common areas, on-site fitness room and team practice area. Another aspect of the renovation included the addition of windows on the outside facade allowing the practice area to be exposed to natural light for the first time. The on-site fitness center is one of the most important additions for the Buffalo coaches, as it will allow the student-athletes to train with their team and coaches. One area in the new complex will be named after former captain Jeff Parker, who lost his battle with cancer in May 2010. The official name for the space will now be the Jeff Parker Student-Athlete Lounge. The Recreation and Athletics Complex (RAC) on the University’s North Campus includes Alumni Arena, a $12.5 million Phase II Building and a $1.5 million outdoor playing fields complex. Alumni Arena’s main gymnasium is home to the Bulls’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, wrestling team and the women’s volleyball team. The largest “free-floating” hardwood floor in the United States at the time it was built, it features basketball, volleyball and badminton courts circled by a 200-meter track and seating for 6,100 spectators following renovations during the summer of 2004.

In 2011, the University began to renovate the inner-workings of the arena to enhance the game-day atmosphere, adding stateof-the-art sound and lighting systems as well the installation of a new video and scoring system. The eye-catching centerpiece of the renovation is the new four-sided, center-hung LED display, that provides live video, instant replays, and animations. The displays measure eight feet high and 14 feet wide and will be accompanied by an LED ring underneath which measures 3 feet high and 52 feet in diameter. Rounding out the scoring system will be new fixed-digit displays in both end-zones and seventy feet of LED scorer’s tables at court level. The video board made its debut on Jan. 7, 2012. The building includes three levels of offices, locker rooms, equipment and training-therapy rooms, seminar rooms and racquetball courts. The Phase II Building on the north side of Alumni Arena has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a separate diving well, a triple gymnasium and dance studio. Other areas are a wrestling practice room, two weight-training rooms (a state-of-the-art fitness center and a varsity weight room), additional racquetball and squash courts, an erg room, and an aerobics room.

BULLS HOPE 2012-13 GROWING PAINS WILL LEAD TO EXPLOSIVE YEAR ON MAT FOR YOUTHFUL BULLS A young and talented UB wrestling team took its lumps last season after leaning heavily on a starting lineup that consisted of multiple wrestlers who were sophomores or younger. Now coming back to the team will be six starters from last year with a season of experience under their belt and a feeling that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something still to prove. Joining them will be one returning national qualifier - redshirt junior Max Soria. Soria accumulated 25 victories last season including one NCAA Tournament victory and this year he will look to help the team climb back into the national focus. The Bulls program will also welcome a completely new coaching staff for the 2013-14 season as former Bull standout John Stutzman takes over the reigns at Buffalo. After eight seasons developing Bloomsburg into a national power, Stutzman has been hired as the 15th coach in the 79-year-history of the program. Joining Stutzman at Buffalo are Bryce Hasseman, Quincy Osborn and former Bull great John-Martin Cannon. Stutzman guided the Huskies to a record of 97-56-1 in his eight seasons, putting him third all-time in career wins. The team finished with double-digit wins in six of his eight seasons as head coach. He has coached three NCAA Division I All-Americans, eight Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champions, 76 EWL place winners and 33 NCAA Division I national qualifiers. Andrew Schutt returns to the Bulls for his senior season as the active winningest wrestler on the team with 48 career victories. Schutt entered last year with high expectations and the same will be placed on his plate this year following a junior season that saw him collect nine wins. Schuttâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2012-13 campaign was highlighted by a second place finish at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships, finishing with three wins and one loss. Two other Buffalo wrestlers that will be relied on this season to perform at a high level are a pair of redshirt juniors in Wally Maziarz and Angelo Malvestuto. Maziarz has continued to improve each and every year on campus and the coaching staff believes he will have his best season yet as a junior, following a sophomore campaign that had him rank third on the team with 23 wins. Malvestuto seemed to settle down last year in his first season after transferring from Virginia Tech as he produced 12 big victories for the Bulls. The Bulls are ready to come out charging after a very disappointing season last year, and with coach John Stutzman saying that he sees improvement at all classes of the team, the Bulls hope a successful postseason is in the cards for their wrestling program.

125 Max and Mike Soria (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) will be competing for the starting spot at 125, with Max likely to start after qualifying for the NCAA tournament last season and winning 25 matches (eight in dual meets). He will be backed up by his twin brother Mike and freshman Cory Hollister (Perry, Ny/ Perry), who joins the team after finishing his career at Perry High School with a 45-4 record as a senior.

The 133-pound division consists of three wrestlers, one of which returns and two are newcomers. The one experienced wrestler is Justin Farmer (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way Catholic) who returns as the starter from 2012-13. Farmer won seven matches last season. Freshman Brandon Muntz (Falconer, NY/ Falconer) and transfer Jaydon Rice (Bethlehem, PA/ Hunter College) will give the 133-pound division great depth for the upcoming season.

Erik Galloway (State College, PA/ State College/ Pittsburgh) moved up in weight for this season after a successful season at the 133-pound class. Galloway picked up 16 wins on the season including four MAC wins. Senior transfer Nick Flannery (Framingham, MA/ Framingham) from Cleveland State will push Galloway for the starting spot this year following three seasons as a Viking that saw him win 45 matches. This will be one of the most interesting battles for a starting spot on the squad during the 2013-14 season.

Following the departure of perenial starter Blake Roulo, the Bulls will be left with two guys to fill the big shoes left behind. Freshman Ryan Todora (Breinigsville, PA/ Bethlehem Catholic) will be looking to earn the starting spot for coach Stutzman after a very successful high school career. Andrew Schutt (Greenwood Township, MI/ Yale) makes the move up in weight class after recording nine wins at the 141-pound class last season and will look to push Todora for the starting spot as he has the most experience on the squad with his 48 career victories.

157 John Northup (Rochester, NY/ Rush-Henrietta) also made the move up in weight this year and will look to push for a starting spot after winning six matches as a freshman. After sitting out last season due to injuries, Matt Dehney (Dracut, MA/ Dracut) returns at 100 percent with a chance to see time at 157. Freshman Jake Campana (Manahawkin, NJ/ Southern Regional) will add some nice depth after coming to Buffalo following a senior season at Southern Regional High School that saw him pick up 24 victories.

165 The 165-pound weight class will be looking to replace one of the greatest wrestlers in school history this year following the departure of Mark Lewandowski. Lewandowski closed out his prestigious Buffalo career with 111 wins including 41 dual meet victories earning three NCAA Tournament appearances. Although replacing one of the program great athletes will be a tough task, incumbent starter at the 157-pound weight class, Wally Maziarz (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), will look to improve on his 23 victories a year ago. Rrok Ndokaj (Staten Island, NY/ Monsignor Farrell) will push Maziarz for the starting position, coming to UB following a freshman campaign at Bloomsburg College that saw him win 12 matches for coach Stutzman. Redshirt freshman Ryan Therrien (Boxford, MA/ Masconomet Regional) will give the Bulls some added depth at a rather deep position.

The Bulls will have to replace another NCAA qualifier at the 174-pound class as John-Martin Cannon and his 84 career victories graduated following last year. The only person in the weight class with any experience is Bloomsburg transfer redshirt freshman Tyler Rill (Hampstead, MD/ Bloomsburg), who wrestled under head coach John Stutzman last season as a part of the Huskies program. Rill posted 12 victories a season ago as a true freshman while earning two major decisions and two pins. Jarred Lux (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) will be asked to step in and make some contributions at 174 under new head coach John Stutzman. Lux picked up three victories as a freshman as he bounced around from 174 to 184. The expectations are high for Lux but he is no stranger to high level of wrestling following his third ranking in the state of Pennsylvania as a senior in high school and his first place at the prestigous Super 32 tournament.

Tony Lock (Chaffee, NY/ Pioneer) will get his chance to be the starter at the 184-pound weight class following a freshman campaign that saw him pick up eight wins. Freshman Joe Ariola (Oak Park, Ill./ Oak Park River Forest) will push Lock for the starting spot following a successful high school career. Austin Weigel (Woodstock, NY/ Onteora) will add depth to a very solid group as a freshman. Weigel finished out his very impressive career at Onteora High School with two Section 9 titles to go along with 123 career victories which ranks him second in school history.

197 The Bulls filled a critical position last season thanks to the transfer of Angelo Malvestuto (Niagara Falls, NY/ Virginia Tech) from Virginia Tech. Malvestuto will be looked at as a team leader this season and will be relied on for key victories throughout the season. After finding success in a tough Hokie weight room, Malvestuto moved closer to home and has the UB coaching staff thrilled about his potential.

Heavyweights The heavyweights class for the Bulls has the most questions marks heading into the 2013-14 season but the coaching staff is very confident in the addition of freshman Anthony Tufaro (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood). The Bulls new coaching staff will be looking for Tufaro to keep improving and growing after a widely successful career at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in New Jersey.

University at Buffalo Wrestling 2013-14 Preview: Schedule

SCHEDULE An expanded Mid-American Conference schedule and a rigorous non-conference dual slate, the 2013-14 UB wrestling schedule was announced Wednesday afternoon. With 13 duals and a pair of dual meet tournaments, with young Bulls will face five teams that finished 2012-13 in the NWCA Top 25. The season begins with a pair of tournaments, with the Oklahoma Gold in Brockport, NY on Nov. 9 and the New York State Collegiate Tournament two weeks later, on Nov. 23. To cap off the opening month, the team will head to Albany for the Northeast Duals on Nov. 30. The MAC season begins the following weekend, with grueling back-to-back matches at Kent State and at Central Michigan within a 24-hour span. The team will then head into the winter holiday break with a trip to the historic Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where UB will face the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Dec. 12 dual will begin at 7 pm. To end the month of December, select wrestlers will compete at the Lock Haven Invitational on Dec. 29. After competing together at the MAC tournament this past season, the Bulls will welcome the Northern Iowa Panthers to Alumni Arena as conference rivals for the first time ever on Jan. 4. It will be just the second meeting between the two programs, with the inaugural dual coming in the 2008-09 season. A week later, the team will compete in the Pitt Duals, a round-robin duals tournament hosted by the Pittsburgh Panthers. A cross-state rivalry will be renewed on Jan. 17, when Buffalo travels down to New York City to take on the Columbia Lions. Though the two teams have long competed in the NYS Tournament, this will be the first dual since the 2000-01 season. January will be capped by a pair of home conference duals, with new member Old Dominion at 7 pm on Jan. 25, and the Ohio Bobcats the following afternoon. Buffalo will then go back out on the road with a pair of teams that finished last season high up in the national rankings. First will be Edinboro on Feb. 1, and then a trip to Columbia, MO to take on Missouri in a MAC dual. The Tigers did not formally compete in the conference’s dual meet season last year, but did win the postseason tournament to snap Central Michigan’s long-standing reign. Following two more non-conference duals, the regular season will come to a close with a pair of conference matches. The team will travel to Ypsilanti for a dual against Eastern Michigan, then end the season at home Feb. 22 against Northern Illinois. This season, the postseason MAC tournament will be hosted by Kent State. The one-day event will be held March 9. Two weeks later, the NCAA tournament will take place in Oklahoma City. “Being the young team that we’re going to be, I wanted to develop a schedule that would challenge our guys but allow them to succeed,” head coach John Stutzman said. “There are no breaks in our schedule, and we need to be ready, but this will prepare us for the goals we want our guys to achieve.”

University at Buffalo Wrestling Stutzman By The Numbers John STUTZMAN Head Coach First Season Buffalo ‘98 After a standout career on the mats in Alumni Arena, John Stutzman will begin a new era of Buffalo wrestling as its head coach. After eight seasons developing Bloomsburg into a national power, Stutzman has been hired as the 15th coach in the 79-year-history of the program, University at Buffalo Director of Athletics Danny White announced on Tuesday. Stutzman guided the Huskies to a record of 97-56-1 in his eight seasons, putting him third all-time in career wins. The team finished with doubledigit wins in six of his eight seasons as head coach. He has coached three NCAA Division I All-Americans, eight Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champions, 76 EWL place winners and 33 NCAA Division I national qualifiers. Personally, Stutzman has earned the EWL Coach of the Year honors in 2007, 2010, and 2013, as well as producing the 2007 EWL and PSAC Freshman of the Year; the 2009 EWL Championship’s Outstanding Wrestler and the 2011 PSAC Freshman of the Year. “We are excited to welcome John back to Buffalo. His impressive career on the mat has been matched by his long history of excellence as a coach,” White said. “Given the amount of success that Coach Stutzman has experienced at Bloomsburg, I’m confident with the resources and enhanced facilities we have available, he can build UB into one of the premier wrestling programs in the nation.” A 1998 graduate of UB, Stutzman was 95-27 in a three-year career for the Bulls and left as the school’s all-time leader in career wins. His best year for the Bulls was the 1996-97 season when he posted a mark of 35-4, the fourth best single-season winning percentage in program history. Statistically, he is tied with recent graduate John-Martin Cannon for fourth in career takedowns, with 135. He also was a three-time East Coast Wrestling Association place winner. In 2012-13, Stutzman’s Huskies posted a record of 17-3 claiming the first outright EWL Dual Meet Championships in program history while beating three nationally ranked teams in Maryland, Pittsburgh and Edinboro. The 17 wins are tied for the most in the program’s history. As a team, the Huskies finished ranked 15th in the country by the NWCA. At the EWL Championships, Sutzman led the Huskies to a third place finish overall, with two EWL Champions, while qualifying six wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. In the 2008-09 season Bloomsburg was third at the EWL championships and had the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler in Matt Moley. At the NCAA Championships, Moley earned All-American honors for the second straight year, the first time since the 1988-89 season that a BU wrestler was All-American in consecutive seasons.

Prior to becoming Bloomsburg University’s head wrestling coach, he was an assistant coach for seven years at the Division I level. During those seven seasons, he worked at UB, and at MAC-rival Northern Illinois University before joining Bloomsburg as an assistant. In addition to his college coaching duties, Stutzman has coached with the New York Athletic Club at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 USA Olympic Freestyle Trials, as well as the 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Senior World Team Trials where he has coached Six World Team Trials participants, three Olympic Team Trials participants, and one USA National Team Member. He was also an assistant wrestling coach for the 2009 NWCA All-American tour in Seoul, South Korea. Stutzman is also a member of the USA Wrestling coaching staff since 2009. He has served as the head coach of the University World Team in Warsaw, Poland; the Ziolkowski International in Spala, Poland; the Stephen Sargsyan International in Armenia; the 2011 Fila Junior World Championships; the Dimtry Korkin International in Yakutsk, Russia and the Ramzan Kadirov Cup in Chechnya, Russia. He also served as an assistant wrestling coach for Team USA for the University Team Championships in Poland in 2009. Stutzman, a native of New Castle, DE. He and his wife, Annette, have two daughters, Alexa Bryanna and Torin Valera.

During the 2006-07 season Stutzman earned EWL Coach of the Year honors, after helping Moley earn the EWL and PSAC Rookie of the Year Award and heavyweight Mike Spaid becoming the school’s first AllAmerican since the 1993 season.

Bryce Hasseman is entering his first season as an assistant coach at Buffalo. He comes from the historically strong Mishawka High School wrestling program in Indiana, where he coached the team for the 2012-13 season. He made the transition to high school wrestling after enjoying success as an assistant coach on the collegiate level. Hasseman served as an assistant at Oklahoma State University from 2010-12, where he worked under legendary wrestler and coach John Smith. He also worked with Terry Brands at the Hawkeye Wrestling Club prior to that. In his career on the mat, Hasseman has competed all over the world. His international tournament victories include the 2009 Dan Kolov International and Dave Schultz Memorial International championships, the 2008 Guelph Open championship, the 2006 Canada Cup and Northern Plains Regional championship, and the 2004 Northeast Regional championship. He trained from 2004-11 at the University of Iowa and the United States Olympic Training Center, he earned a spot on Team USA for 2009-10 and was ranked as high as number two in his weight class. He tried out for the 2012 London Olympics, but suffered a knee injury that kept him from a fair shot to make the team. In national events, his highlights included second-place finishes at the 2009 U.S. World Team Trials and 2004 University Nationals, third in the 2008 and 2009 U.S. Nationals, and third at the 2005 University Nationals.

Quincy Osborn is in his first season as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Buffalo. He recently finished his fourth year as an assistant with MAC rival Ohio in 2013. Over that time with the Bobcats, he helped to recruit two top 25 ranked recruiting classes and coached up Germane Lindsey to All American status in the 2010 season. His first coaching job came at Augsburg College, where he worked for two years after wrestling at the school for two seasons. After originally started his collegiate wrestling career at Minnesota before going to Augsburg, Osborn qualified twice for the NCAA Division I tournament while with the Gophers. Wrestling for Augsburg in 2007, he was the Division III National Champion at 141 pounds, also leading the Auggies to the national team title. In that season, he had the most team points, takedowns, and falls. Quincy earned a degree in history from Augsburg in 2009, and received his Master’s degree in Coaching Education from Ohio in 2011. He and his wife Hannah are the proud owners of two cats and a dog.

After coming out of Franklin High School in Indiana in 2000 as a high school state champion, he started his career at Northern Illinois while Stutzman was an assistant with the Huskies. He would finish his career in 2005 under Stutzman, who was then the first-year head coach at Bloomsburg. In that season, he was a 2005 EWL champion and an NCAA qualifier after going 38-6. Hasseman is married to the former Angie McGinnis, after the two met in 2008 at the Olympic Training Center. Angie was there as an alternate for the U.S. volleyball team.

Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season Buffalo ‘13 John-Martin Cannon begins his first season as a Volunteer assistant coach for the University at Buffalo Wrestling team. Cannon is a 2013 gradute of UB and was a three-time NCAA Tournament qualifier. Cannon finished his illustrious UB career with 84 career victories including 33 dual meet wins. Enjoyed the best season of his Bulls career as a junior, finishing with a career-high 27 victories and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Cannon was also named to the NWCA All-Academic Division I Team and Academic All-MAC team three straight seasons.

BUILDING ON A PROSPEROUS PAST: A BRIEF TOUR THROUGH UB WRESTLING’S HISTORY Although the University at Buffalo was founded in 1846, it was not until the mid-1930’s that UB fully entered the world of intercollegiate athletics. Six sports - hockey, golf, tennis, cross country, track and field, and wrestling then formed the field of competition with football and basketball having started in 1894 and 1915, respectively. It was in the early 1930s that the University’s athletic teams adopted the nickname Bulls. Prior to that, UB’s athletic teams were referred to as the Bison. The change was made by Buffalo’s sportsmen due to the fact that several Western New York professional sports teams were also called the Bisons. While there was a desire to have more men participate in intercollegiate athletics, an outstanding intramural program had developed. Football, basketball, wrestling, boxing, golf, tennis, fencing, baseball, and softball were among some of the more popular sports. Wrestling and fencing matches began during the 1933-1934 academic year as by this time, UB clearly had the most comprehensive intercollegiate athletic program in Western New York. Among UB wrestling’s most distinguished alumnus is Robert E. Rich Sr., the founder and Chairman of the Board of Rich Products Corporation - the nation’s largest privately-held frozen foods manufacturer. Known as the “Father of UB Wrestling,” he not only was an organizer of wrestling at the varsity level, but the team’s first captain and head coach during his senior year. World War II had a dramatic effect on the University’s campus, and it presented serious personnel problems for athletic teams. Between 1943 and 1945, virtually no official athletic teams were in existence as the entire University’s physical education department concentrated on the training of American Air

Force personnel. Consequently, UB’s wrestling program was put on hold until after the war. Following World War II, athletics at Buffalo returned to normal. During the 1948-1949 season, the wrestling team compiled its best record to date, posting seven wins under former Purdue University star Warren Gregory. In 1950-51, Gregory led the Bulls to a 9-3-1 record and UB wrestling began to garner attention. Over 1,000 fans saw the Bulls’ 17-13 loss to Cornell University at Clark Hall where meets used to take place. In March, UB was one of 12 teams participating in the Niagara District Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Tournament which was televised live on WBEN-TV, the first UB athletic event broadcast on television. Although the UB wrestling program enjoyed success throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, it floundered in a sea of inconsistency between 1951 and 1966, compiling a 76-91-1 record. The 1966-67 season saw the program’s fortunes change however, as Gerald Gergley was named head coach. In his four seasons at the helm, Gergley compiled a 31-15 record as his squads were consistently strong performers in the powerful NCAA University Divisions Cup. In 1970, Ed Michael was announced as the 12th coach in the history of UB wrestling. Although he compiled an impressive 45-5-0 record at Corning Community College, little did anybody know the impact he would have on the Bulls’ wrestling program. In his inaugural season as coach, Michael led his Bulls to a 14-6-1 record and the first of eight consecutive New York State Wrestling Championships. As a matter of fact, during his first five seasons, Michael guided UB to an amazing 81-13-2 dual meet record. Michael’s second season saw more success as UB posted a 17-1 record and captured first place in the NCAA Division I Regional Tournament, along with its second New York State title. In 1973-1974, the Bulls won a school-record 22 dual meet matches and a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division I Regional Tournament.

The UB wrestling program achieved the ultimate during the 1977-78 season when they not only won their eighth-straight New York State Title, but the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship. To this day, this remains the only national championship won by an athletic team in the history of UB athletics. However, Michael’s thirst for success wasn’t quenched by this tremendous accomplishment. Between 1978 and 1991, UB wrestling teams placed in the top 20 at 13 NCAA Championship tournaments. In 1986, the Bulls won the SUNYAC Wrestling title after back-to-back top three finishes, while the 1989-90 season saw the Bulls capture the Division II Qualifier and a national ranking as high as 11th. In 1991 after more than two decades as head coach of UB’s wrestling program, Michael stepped down in order to concentrate more on his increasing responsibilities as Assistant Athletic Director for Recreation and Intramural Services at UB. Inducted into the UB Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 with his 1977-78 National Title team, Michael retired as Buffalo’s winningest head wrestling coach, compiling a 213-106-3 dual meet record while coaching at the Division I, II, and III levels. In his 21 years as the Bulls’ head coach, Michael’s teams produced 39 All-Americans, captured UB’s only national title, placed in the Top 20 at 13 NCAA Championships, ranked in the nation’s Top 20 on four occasions, captured eight straight NYS titles, won the SUNYAC Championship, and won 98 tournament championships. Following Michael’s retirement, assistant coach Charlie Cheney took over as head wrestling coach. Cheney came to the Bulls in 1988 as an assistant after holding the same position at Ashland College. Cheney had been co-captain of the 1982 NCAA Division II Champion California State University at Bakersfield squad, finishing second in his weight class and earning All-America honors. However, his success on the mat didn’t translate into success as a coach, and he was dismissed following four disappointing seasons. The 1995-96 season saw former University of Pittsburgh assistant coach Jim Beichner named as the 14th head coach of UB’s wrestling program. The program experienced a rebirth as the Bulls posted 10 dual meet victories (more wins than in any of the previous eight UB seasons) and captured third place in the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships and at the East Coast Wrestling Championships. Additionally, the Bulls qualified two wrestlers for the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships as the Bulls finished 53rd out of 80 teams. Beichner was named the New York State Wrestling Coach of the Year for Divisions I, II, and III, the ECWA Coach of the Year, and the Amateur Wrestling News’ Rookie Head Coach of the Year. In addition, the wrestling team was recognized for its outstanding effort, receiving the Athletic Department’s Quantum Leap Award. The Bulls continued to experience success in Beichner’s second season, compiling a 12-2-2 dual meet record, including the program’s 400th dual meet victory at Ohio, and finishing third in the ECWA for the second time in as many seasons. Jason Wartinger (118/126 pounds) advanced to the NCAA Championships and finished his career at Buffalo with 61 wins. John Stutzman (150) posted a 35-4 record, highlighted by a school-record 24-match win streak and four tournament championships. In the 1997-98 season, three was the magic number. It was Beichner’s third season as coach and he guided the Bulls to a third-place finish in the ECWA for the third straight season. In addition, he led three individuals, Chad Caros, Jeromy McVige and Vince DeAugustine, to the NCAA Championships. Buffalo finished the 2000-01 regular season third overall in the MAC. Four wrestlers qualified for the 2001 NCAA Championships. Shawn Kegel (133), Dave Guarino (165), Josh States (184), and John Eschenfelder (Hwt) represented the Bulls, securing them a national team finish of 48th. States also broke the school’s career overall wins record by finishing his career with 102 victories. In 2005-06, Beichner’s 11th season with the Bulls, the team had a breakthrough season, receiving votes for the first time in the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association Division I poll and reaching 24th in the nation in WrestlingReport.com’s national rankings. Led by Kyle Cerminara, who rewrote the UB record book during the season as he set career wins, dual meet wins and dual meet takedowns records, the Bulls crashed the national scene. Cerminara went on a 34-match winning streak, smashing Stutzman’s mark and Mark Budd (133) also pulled off a first, as he upset a No. 1-ranked wrestler, Shawn Bunch of Edinboro, 6-4, marking the first time a UB grappler beat a Division I No. 1-ranked wrestler. Harold Sherrell (Hwt), a walk-on five years before, had one of the most memorable seasons in school history, winning 35 matches and a MAC Championship to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships, along with Budd and Cerminara. In all, the Bulls tied a school-record with seven placewinners at the MAC Championships and also posted a record six MAC Wrestler of the Week winners. Cerminara earned a No. 2-seed at the NCAA Championships, the highest-ever for a UB grappler before finishing in the top 12 at the event. program also welcomed another member to the exclusive 100-win club. Mark Budd joined that exclusive list when he capped his outstanding UB career with 104 victories and his second appearance at the NCAA Championships. In 2010-11, the team won a program-record four individual titles and finished third at the MAC championships. A record nine Bulls also placed in the postseason tournament and junior John-Martin Cannon was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler, the first Buffalo wrestler to ever earn that honor. Aside from the postseason success, the team also inducted two more members to the 100-win club, as senior Jimmy Hamel and junior Desi Green earning their membership. Green additionally became the first junior in program history to win 100 matches. In the national tournament, rising sophomore Mark Lewandowski made his name known among all of Division I. After barely losing to eventual national champion Bubba Jenkins of Arizona State late in the match, Lewandowski won three straight matches - including an upset of fifth seed Jesse Dong of Virginia Tech - en route to a top-12 finish. The 2011-12 season was one of growing pains for a young, and inexperienced team. The team still sent a pair of wrestlers to the national tournament: junior Mark Lewandowski for the second straight season, and redshirt freshman Max Soria. Senior Kevin Smith not only reached the 100-win mark for his career, but he also finished the season with 121 total wins (2nd most all time) and won a dual match on the final day of the regular season to pass Kyle Cerminara for the most career dual wins (with 52). Lewandowski won over 30 matches for the second straight year and set the single season record for most two-point near falls. For the fourth-straight season, a UB wrestler reached 100 career wins, as Mark Lewandowski reached the mark early in 2012-13. It was a difficult season for the Bulls, who won one dual but still sent four to the national tournament: Lewandowski, Soria, Cannon, and Blake Roulo. In the Spring of 2013, John Stutzman was named the 15th coach of the wrestling program. He returned to his alma mater after winning 97 duals in eight seasons as the head coach at Bloomsburg. The Bulls will offer plenty of talented youth as the next generation of Buffalo begins in 2013-14.

ROBERT E. RICH SR, LAST OF A SPECIAL BREED Food company giant never left Buffalo roots nor forgot his love of sports

It seems hard to imagine now, much less duplicate. A University at Buffalo graduate founding a one-horse, two truck dairy with his father’s $5,000 loan in 1937. Seventy years later, with family still in charge, Rich Products Corp. has $2.5 billion in annual sales and 7,000 employees in 85 countries. To paraphrase, is Buffalo a great place or what? Robert E. Rich Sr. (1913-2006) Considered the father of UB Wrestling for his contributions to the founding of the team in 1933.

Robert E. Rich Sr. certainly thought so and showed it, for all his 92 years. When he passed away, his name was on his company, had been on the home of the Buffalo Bills in their Super Bowl years, on the prize given to the best wrestlers at UB and the Harvard Cup MVP award. He was also behind the Triple A baseball Bisons and Dunn Tire Park. He was in the Buffalo and UB sports halls of fame and on the Forbes list of the richest Americans. And it’s an easy guess which list he cares about the most.

He was one of the last century’s giants. The Rich, Knox, Jacobs, Schoellkopf and Butler familes led Buffalo. Their legacies in business, media and arts thrive today, and Rich’s overlooks the river from Niagara Street. Bob Rich Sr. once said his crowning professional achievement was receiving the second Frozen Food Industry Founders Award in 1976. The first went to Clarence Birdseye. But Rich’s happiest moment was coaching Riverside High to its first Harvard Cup in 1936. That blend of a man who built and ran a global business in the decades before computer required such thinking, and one who knew the names of UB wrestlers 60 years younger than him, speaks to his character. Like so many of his generation, he was a product of vision, hard work and drive to succeed. He gave the same back to his beloved Buffalo.
