2013-14 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO MEN’S TENNIS LEE NICKELL Head Coach 5th Season Now in his fifth season, head coach Lee Nickell has led the University at Buffalo men’s tennis team to some of its greatest successes in school history. The Bulls have posted double-digit victory seasons in each of Nickell’s first three years at the helm, a feat not accomplished by a UB men’s tennis program since the 2000-03 seasons. In his first season with the Bulls, Nickell led the team to an undefeated record in the Mid-American Conference, a top seed in the league championship tournament, a spot in the MAC Championship match and national and regional rankings for his players. For all those efforts, Nickell was named MAC Coach of the Year in 2010.

COACHING RECORD Overall MAC 2009-10 13-7 5-0 2010-11 12-8 3-2 2011-12 11-10 4-1 2012-13 9-10 3-2 Career 45-35 15-5

In 2012, he again led the team to a top seed in the MAC Tournament and a berth in the league final as the Bulls finished 11-10 and 4-1 in league play. For 2013, the team went 9-10 and saw senior Vusa Hove win MAC Player of the Year honors and a top-20 individual ranking in the region by the ITA. In four years at UB, Nickell has posted a 45-35 overall record and a 15-5 mark in MAC dual matches. Nickell was named to the position in June of 2009 after a national search. Prior to his arrival in Buffalo, Nickell was an assistant coach at Fresno State for one season and spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Alabama, helping guide the Crimson Tide to a Top 12 national ranking.

During the 2008-09 campaign, Nickell coached at Fresno State, helping the Bulldogs to a final ranking of 44th in the nation and a 17-9 overall dual match record, while working alongside head coach Jay Udwadia, a Buffalo native. The Bulldogs narrowly missed an at large bid into the NCAA Tournament, but Nickell did coach Rudolf Siwy, who made it to the singles draw of the NCAA Championships. Siwy finished the season as the 54th ranked singles player in the nation. As for doubles, Siwy joined with Mirko Zapletal to finish 41st in the nation. Nickell helped four Bulldog netters earn All-Western Athletic Conference honors in 2009. Prior to his stint at Fresno State, Nickell was an assistant coach at the University of Alabama, where in three seasons he helped move the Crimson Tide from 74th in the nation to the top 12. Alabama went 55-31 during the four seasons that Nickell was an assistant coach there. The Crimson Tide made the NCAA Tournament in all three years, including an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen in 2006. He also helped coach three individual players to the NCAA Championships including one doubles pair that went two years in a row. Before beginning his college coaching career in 2005, Nickell worked for four years at several clubs and tennis centers in the Southeast. In 2001, he was the Head Tennis Pro/Director of Junior Development at North Carolina’s Hendersonville Racquet Club. In 2003, Nickell was named Fitness Director at the Tops’l Beach and Racquet Club in Destin, Florida. before being named Tennis Professional at the Cherokee Tennis Center in Woodstock, Georgia. in 2004. Nickell graduated in 2001 from Furman University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science. At Furman he played number one singles from 1998-02. He was a three-year captain and was named to the All-Southern Conference Team twice in singles and once in doubles. Furman made its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001. At Furman, Nickell played for legendary men’s tennis coach Paul Scarpa, the all-time winningest coach in Division I men’s tennis history. On the national level, Nickell also serves as the Northeast Region Committee Chair for the Intercollegiate Tennis Asocociation.

2013-14 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO MEN’S TENNIS GEORGE TIBIL Assistant Coach 2nd Season After spending three seasons playing for the University at Buffalo men’s tennis team, George Tibil was named the squad’s assistant coach in September of 2012. Tibil, a former team captain for head coach Lee Nickell with the Bulls from 2009-12, compiled a 50-36 combined singles and doubles record in his three seasons at Buffalo. In 2010, he was named UB’s Most Valuable Player finishing 17-9 in singles play and 16-13 in doubles competitions. His 4-0 singles mark against Mid-American Conference opponents helped propel the Bulls to their first league regular season title. He also represented UB at the prestigious ITA Regional championships. A native of Bucharest, Romania, Tibil also brings a strong international background to his coaching duties. A winner of five national tournaments in Belgium, Tibil also scored a three-set victory over Tom Vanhoudt, ranked 36th in the ATP rankings. He was also among the top four junior players in Romania. “George Tibil is a great example of what it means to be a Buffalo Bull,” said Nickell. “After a stellar freshman year, he had two catastrophic injuries his sophomore and junior years which prohibited him from competing. Instead of throwing in the towel, he came every day to practice helping coach the guys as well as became a fixture in the athletic department. He has many years of coaching experience and his recruiting contacts are all over the world. He is the right guy for the job, and he will help the Bulls men’s tennis program continue to rewrite the record books.”

2013-14 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO MEN’S TENNIS The Home Court Advantage

University Tennis Club

With two top-notch competition and training facilities, the Bulls are never at a loss for court time. Out of the success of hosting the World University Games in 1993, the University at Buffalo formed the University Tennis Club at the Ellicott Tennis Courts, home of the UB Bulls men’s and women’s tennis teams. Nestled amongst hardwoods and adjacent to Ellicott Creek, the 13 Plexipave hardcourt tennis complex is host to some of the best Division I tennis action in the Northeast. During the summer of 2005, the courts got a complete makeover, including a new blue and white surface to correspond with the team colors.

Miller Tennis Center

The club features active tennis programming for the family and has hosted to numerous USTA events. In addition, the club has served as the host site of the Section VI High School Championships and the Empire State Games Qualifying Tournament along with an assortment of club activities. Collegiaately, the club has hosted the Mid-American Conference Championships twice, the women’s tournament in 2008 and the men’s tournament in 2009. As Buffalo’s weather sometimes dictates, UB’s teams also call Williamsville’s Miller Tennis Center home. There, the teams can use the eight indoor courts ensuring that no competition or practice session is lost to inclement weather.
