2013 Buffalo Volleyball Veteran Squad Looks To Put Bulls Over The Top

UB has six seniors on its 2013 roster For one of the first times in head coach Todd Kress’ era at Buffalo he will have a veteran team centered around six seniors and two juniors as the 2013 Buffalo volleyball team steps on the court. This year’s senior class marks the completion of Kress’ first recruiting class at UB. The senior class features a group of individuals that have started and played in the majority of the matches over the last three years. The most consistent member of the class has been libero Kelly Svoboda who is currently sixth in school history in career digs and is on pace to finish in at least the top two in the history of UB Volleyball. Despite missing the beginning of last year due to illness, Svoboda still finished tied for second in a single season for digs per set at over 4.6. Vancouver, British Columbia native Dana Musil began last season at the libero position, but moved back to her more comfortable outside hitter role, where she tied the school record for kills in a three-set match with 19 in a victory over Syracuse. Musil has been one of Buffalo’s top threats offensively, surpassing 200 kills in each of her first three seasons. Musil is on a pace to move into the top 10 in school history in career kills this season. The senior class continues at the setter position where Dani Reinert has taken the bulk of the reps over the last two years. Reinert is fifth in school history in assists and she holds two of the 10 spots in school history for assists in a set. Reinert is just one of five players in UB Volleyball history with over 2,500 assists in her career. Middle blocker Carissa McKenna had 170 kills last season and 91 total blocks as she remains one of the few veterans in the middle for Buffalo. McKenna recorded a career-high with 15 kills last season in a 3-0 victory over Miami, surpassing her old career high, which she set against the

RedHawks during her sophomore season. The West Bloomfield, MI native had a season-high nine blocks against Bowling Green. Rounding out the senior class is a pair of outside hitters in Christine Fritsche and Kaja Schirmer. Fritsche saw action in 13 matches last year as she recorded 41 kills and 18 digs, while Schirmer split her time at both the outside hitter position and as a middle blocker. Schirmer, who just completed her second season with UB after transferring from New Hampshire, played in 12 matches and had 10 kills and five total blocks. In a match against Eastern Kentucky last season, Schirmer had all three of her service aces on the year. The Bulls roster continues with a pair of juniors led by reigning All-MAC player Liz Scott. Scott was an all-league second team selection and Academic All-MAC selection as she led the Bulls with 318 kills and a .264 hitting percentage. Scott had a career-high 25 kills in a win over Oral Roberts last year and recorded 20 or more kills in three matches. The other junior on the team is one of three newcomers to the roster in setter Taylor Pritchett. She comes to Buffalo from Lees-McRae where she was the team’s starting setter. Her coaches at Lees-McRae are current UB assistant coach James Goodridge and volunteer assistant Cassie Crumal. Pritchett played in 67 sets last season at Lees-McRae and led the team with 549 assists. Returning this season after missing all of last year due to a knee injury is Sable Staller, who began to show huge improvements towards the tail end of her freshman season in 2011. Staller will provide depth at the outside hitting position for the Bulls. Four student-athletes will be starting their second season as members

of the volleyball team in 2013, including a pair of outside hitters and a pair of blockers in the middle. Tahleia Bishop and Megan Lipski will both see time on the outside, continuing where they left off during their freshman seasons. Bishop saw action in all 28 matches for the Bulls last year as she recorded 173 kills, 70 digs and 44 total blocks. One of the top overall athletes on the team, Bishop is expected to have career year in 2013. Lipski, the Louisville, KY native, played in 26 matches during her rookie season and had 162 kills, while also finishing second on the team with 24 service aces. Classmate Akeila Lain was a mainstay in the lineup for the Bulls in 2012 as she led the team with 131 total blocks, including 18 solo blocks. Both of those totals were amongst the tops in the Mid-American Conference last season. Offensively, Lain also added 126 kills. Providing depth at the middle position last season was Amber Hatchett, who appeared in six matches, recording a pair of kills and seven total blocks. The Bulls have added a pair of freshmen to the roster for the upcoming season, staying in-state for one and going across the globe for the other. Siena Wilder is a libero/defensive specialist from Burnt Hills, NY and a was a four-year letterwinner in high school. She has been recognized as a Prepvolleyball Senior National Player of the Year Nominee and a Prepvolleyball 2012 Prep Volleyball Defensive Dandy. UB’s other freshman is setter Megan Lin, who comes to Western New York by way of Taipei, Taiwan. Lin played from coach Jim Pei Ger at Taipei First Girls High School and is expected to add depth to the setter position. The Bulls have also revamped their coaching staff for the 2013 season as Kress has hired two new assistant coaches to help lead the way. Ma-

rie Zidek comes to Buffalo after three seasons at DePaul University. A former MAC player at Northern Illinois, Zidek has played prominent roles in player development, focusing on the setter and libero positions. Prior to DePaul, she served as graduate assistant at Oregon State. James Goodridge joins the staff after serving as the head coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Lee-McRae in North Carolina. He had success as a head coach, beating ranked opponents along the way. In 2010, he led the women’s program to a 25-8 record and an 18-0 mark in conference play. Goodridge brought his assistant coach Cassie Crumal with him, who will serve as UB’s volunteer assistant coach. Crumal played her collegiate volleyball at William and Mary, where she was the team’s setter. The Bulls will begin non-conference play by hosting the UB Invite, which will have both Niagara and Temple at the tournament. Action gets started on Aug. 30 at noon against the Purple Eagles. UB will then head to tournaments at Cornell and Georgia State before returning home for the Blue and White Classic, which will take place September 20 and 21. The Bulls will welcome Valparaiso, Maryland-Eastern Shore and nationally-ranked Ohio State to Alumni Arena for the weekend. The tournament will begin a six-match homestand for the Bulls as they open conference play with three straight home matches. UB will then go on the road for eight of its next 10 matches before playing the final three at home. The MAC Tournament will take place from Nov. 22-24 and UB closes out the season by hosting West Virginia on Nov. 30. With a veteran squad in place, the Bulls are looking to make a charge towards the MAC Tournament in Geneva, Ohio and hopefully secure their first ever trip to the Division I NCAA Tournament.

Todd Kress Head Coach • Fifth Season Cincinnati ‘92 Todd Kress begins his fifth season as head coach of the UB Volleyball team, leading the Bulls to their first two MAC Tournament Quarterfinal performances. Kress has won 310 matches as a head coach and has led three teams to the NCAA Tournament, while coaching a trio of All-Americans. Last season, the Bulls fought youth and injuries, but placed Liz Scott on the All-MAC Second Team, just the second ever All-MAC Second Team selection, both coming under Kress. The Bulls won both in-season tournaments that they hosted in 2012, including a 3-0 sweep of Syracuse to win the Blue and White Classic. In 2011, Kress coached one of the youngest teams in the nation as he had 13 freshmen and sophomores on the squad. He still managed to lead the Bulls to double figures in victories for the third straight year and helped place Liz Scott onto the All-MAC Freshman team. Kress also picked up his 300th career victory as the Bulls defeated Bowling Green, 3-0, on Nov. 4. In 2010, Kress led the Bulls to an 18-16 record, its most wins in a year since 1996. The Bulls won just their second ever MAC Tournament match, defeating Akron on the road 3-0. The Bulls claimed tournament titles at both of their home tournaments during the non-conference season, doing all of this with five freshmen that he recruited to Buffalo. In Kress’ first season with the Bulls, the team posted a 16-16 record, finishing .500 or better for the first time since joining the MAC. He led UB to two preseason tournament titles and coached a player onto the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman team. Kress led the Bulls to wins against some of the MAC’s top teams, including a 3-2 win over MAC Finalist Western Michigan back in October. The Bulls also won their first ever MAC Tournament match, a 3-2 thriller on the road at Kent State, sending UB to the quarterfinals in Toledo,

2013 Buffalo Volleyball OH for the first time. Kress has a career record of 300-210 in 17 years as a head coach at the Division I level. He became the second youngest head coach in NCAA volleyball history to win 200 matches, which he did so in October 2004. He served as head coach at Florida State from 2002-2007 where he took the Seminoles to the NCAA Tournament in his very first season in 2002. He coached NCAA All-Americans in three seasons and first-team All-ACC players in five straight years, while also mentoring the ACC’s Freshman of the Year in 2003. In the classroom, he had seven players named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll and the first player at Florida State since 1993 to be named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team in 2007. Prior to moving to Florida State, Kress served as head coach at fellow MAC member, Northern Illinois from 1999-02. His 2001 team won the Mid-American Conference and represented the league at the NCAA Tournament. He had the MAC Player of the Year and MAC Freshman of the Year during that 2001 season. Kress began his head coaching career at Fairfield University where he led the team to MAAC Championships in 1997 and 1998, making trips to the NCAA Tournament in both years. At Fairfield, he coached the conference player of the year and rookie of the year in two different seasons. Kress began his coaching career at the University of Cincinnati. While completing his undergraduate education, he was a twoyear starter for the Bearcats’ club squad and served as head coach for two Junior Olympic programs and as an assistant for the Seton High School junior varsity. After completing an associate of arts degree in communications from Edison State College in Ohio in June of 1988, Kress, a native of Sidney, OH, earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in broadcasting from Cincinnati in June of 1992. Kress has two sons, Trevor (12) and Trajan (9).

2013 Buffalo Volleyball Marie Zidek Assistant Coach • First Season Northern Illinois ‘06 Marie Zidek begins her first season as assistant coach at Buffalo. Zidek comes to Buffalo after spending three seasons on the staff at DePaul University. While at DePaul, Zidek played an intricate role in player development, particularly with the setters and liberos, in addition with assisting in team travel logistics and camp coordination. Prior to her time with the Blue Demons, Zidek served as a graduate assistant at Oregon State. At OSU, Zidek contributed to all aspects of the program including facilitating practice, scouting, and tracking student-athlete academic progress. In addition, she was responsible for analyzing video and statistics, and played a vital role in developing volleyball camps for the Beavers. Zidek has been mentored by some of the best teachers in the game, including current Beaver head coach Terry Liskevych, who led the U.S. Women’s National Team to a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In her three seasons with Oregon State, the Beavers amassed 36 victories, one All-American honoree, five All Pac-10 awards and routinely put

numerous student-athletes on the Pac-10 All-Academic Team. Zidek completed her Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine from Oregon State in June of 2010. Prior to her time at OSU, Zidek, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, spent five months working in the High Performance Training Center of the Kuortane Sports Training Institute in Finland. In her time there, Zidek worked as a strength and conditioning coach, as well as an assistant coach for the Finnish National Volleyball Federation’s U-20 men’s team. In addition, she gave lectures on the basics of psychology of sport, and participated in long-term training designs for the rehabilitation of injured athletes. On the club circuit Zidek spent nearly a decade as both a player and a coach with the Celtic Force, a club based in Palos Heights, Ill. Her collegiate-playing days were spent at Northern Illinois, where Zidek was a fouryear letter winner. She earned several academic awards, including Mid-American Conference All-Academic team honors. Zidek graduated with distinction in 2006 with a degree in Kinesiology.

James Goodridge Assistant Coach • First Season Florida State ‘06 James Goodridge begins his first season as assistant coach at Buffalo. Goodridge has spent the last three years as the head men’s volleyball coach at Lees-McRae College. Goodridge took the men’s program at Lees-McRae to new heights in 2011, leading the Bobcats to a 16-10 overall record, including a 5-3 mark in Conference Carolinas play. Under Goodridge’s leadership, the Bobcats posted a trio of victories over NCAA Division I opponents, including a pivotal victory over No. 16 Ball State University, while nearly upsetting No. 11 Penn State University in a five-set thriller. Goodridge played a pivotal role in the success of the women’s program in 2010, as the Bobcats went 25-8 overall and posted a perfect 18-0 record in conference play en route to the program’s 12th regular season title in the last 14 years. Lees-McRae closed out the season with a nine-match winning streak, capturing the program’s 12th conference tournament championship, punching their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in the last 12 years.

His coaching career began directly after high school, coaching while attending college. Goodridge served as the head coach of the men’s club team at Florida State University. After graduating from Florida State University, Goodridge became an assistant for the men’s and women’s volleyball teams at Springfield College in Springfield, MS. Goodridge was an essential piece to the women’s success, as they finished 27-8 en route to a spot in the conference tournament finals. Goodridge joined the Bobcats from conference foe Mount Olive College, where he served as the interim coach for women’s volleyball, leading the Trojans to the conference tournament championship match as the fifth seed in 2008. Goodridge was named the program’s associate head coach during the following men’s season. Goodridge graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management from Florida State in 2006, and later received his Master of Arts in sport and fitness from the University of Central Florida.

Cassie Crumal Volunteer Assistant Coach • First Season James Goodridge William and Mary ‘11

Cassie Crumal begins her first season as a volunteer assistant coach after spending the last season as an assistant coach at Lees-McRae for both the men’s and women’s programs. Served as interim head coach of the women’s team in 2012 and the men’s program in 2013, making her the youngest head coach in the nation at the time. Crumal was a four-year standout at William and Mary where she served as the team’s setter prior to her graduation in 2011. Crumal is sixth in program history with 1,826 assists.

Crumal is a native of Parker, Colorado and graduated with her degree in Psychology and Elementary Education from William and Mary in 2011. She is currently working on her Master’s in Sports Management through Liberty University.
