SEASON PREVIEW BULLS LOOKING TO MAKE BIG JUMP UNDER NEW COACHING REGIME

Backing her up will be a pair of very strong goalkeepers who will push each and every day for a chance to start for the Bulls. Junior Sarah Moore (Orchard Park, NY) is the clear cut back up keeper who will have a chance to man the goal for the Bulls. The three-year member brings much needed experience and leadership to the UB roster. NYIT transfer Cassie Betancourt (Syosset, NY) will also provide depth to a unit that is without their leader and team captain of the past four seasons. DEFENSE Despite losing three of their leaders in the back four defensively from a season ago, the UB Bulls return one of the best defenders in the Mid-American Conference, Sophie Therien (Kirkland, Quebec), for the 2014 campaign. Therien started all 18 games for the Bulls a season ago as the strong-footed senior netted a goal and a assist on the offensive end of the field. Making the transition to defense this season will be three returning players from last year’s squad. Junior Jackie Hall (Brunswick, OH) moves to the back end after a strong season at midfield while Angel Hart (Montclair, NJ) and Dana Lytle (Martinsville, NJ) will also move to the back after spending their freshman seasons as midfielders. Providing the Bulls with some much needed depth in the defensive third will be a pair of sophomores in Rachel Cook (Buffalo, NY) and Ashley Evans (Fort Collins, CO). The pair will look to provide depth and help the Bulls defense rank inside the top-5 in the MAC in defense again this season. MIDFIELD On the flip side of the defense, the midfield will return all of its starters from a year ago. The midfield position is the Bulls deepest and most experienced of all positions on the team. Leading the way is senior captain Megan Giesen (Strongsville, OH) who started all 18 games for UB as a junior. Giesen brings loads of experience and leadership to the position for the young squad. Junior Kristin Markiewicz (Erie, PA) makes the transition to the midfield following back-to-back impressive seasons in the defensive third of the field. A pair of sophomores in Courtney Mann (Buffalo, NY) and Andrea Niper (Princeton, NJ) will also be relied on heavily to put pressure on the opposing defense and help in transition. Kassidy Kidd (Niagara Falls, Ontario) will provide the Bulls with great depth along with loads of experience as the junior started 15 of 18 games as a sophomore for UB. Shifty newcomer Julia Benati (Dorchester, Ontario) has impressed early on for Buffalo and she will be leaned on to give a spark offensively for a Bulls team that returns 64 percent of its scoring from a season ago (nine of 14 goals). Megan Abman (Denver, CO) also will provide the Bulls with an experienced leader off the bench as she appeared in all 18 games a season ago and scored one goal. FORWARD The forward position will return three players for the upcoming season including leading scorer from two seasons ago, Katie Roberts (Homerville, OH). Roberts led the team in shots and shots on goal last season but was only able to find the back of the net on one occasion. With the hard work Roberts has put in this season, the common belief around the program is that she will have her best season yet for the Bulls as a senior. Helping to take some of the pressure off Roberts in her sophomore campaign is Celina Carrero (Newburgh, NY). Carrero came on late in 2013 and proved to be a very dangerous and consistent contributor off the bench for UB. Carrero appeared in 14 games and made four starts as a freshman. For the season, Carrero recorded 13 shots and her quickness led to many other scoring opportunities for her teammates.

NEWCOMERS First year head coach Shawn Burke’s first official recruiting class for the Bulls consists of four highly touted players. UB will welcome a goalkeeper, a pair of midfielders and a defender to the team for the 2014 campaign. Julia Benati joins the Bulls from nearby Dorchester, Ontario where she started for the Nor West Wildcats U17 team in the Ontario Youth Soccer League and Lord Dorchester Secondary School. Last season for Nor West, Benati led her team and ranked second in the league in goals. In addition to her club and high school duties, she has been training at the National Training Center in Canada and was a candidate for the Canada Summer games in 2013. Laura Dougall is another Ontario product coming to Buffalo from Dunbarton High School in Pickering. Dougall was a three-year varsity member and was named Most Valuable Player as a junior for her fantastic season between the pipes. She led her team to the 2009 Ontario Cup Championship. She is currently a member of the FC Durham academy and also has club stints with Ajax 96 Red and Pickering Power 96 as the starting goalkeeper. During the 2010 season, Dougall led the Ontario Youth Soccer League in goals against. She was a member of Team Ontario during the 2011 and 2012 seasons and also attended the Canadian Nation Training Camp this past season. Greece, NY product Jessica Marlowe joins UB after a prolific five-year prep career at Greece Odyssey Academy. The two-year captain was named to the AllState team three times and was also the first athlete from her high school to be named to the First Team All-Greater Rochester three times. This high scoring forward set the school record for goals and assists while only playing until her junior season, following an injury that kept her off the field as a senior. She led her team to four Section V titles, three Regional titles and a State Championship, during her junior season. Alex Lambert two-year team captain at Victor High School and was named the teams Most Valuable Player following a senior campaign that saw her record five goals and 14 points. Last season, Lambert was named first team All-Monroe County and honorable mention All-Greater Rochester for her career season on the pitch. At the club level, she played for the Empire Revolution Academy for five seasons and she led her team to the 2013 NY State Cup Championship. SCHEDULE After a pair of exhibition games for a warm-up, the regular season will begin at home with a pair of Big Four rivalry games, when the Bulls play host to St. Bonaventure on Aug. 22 at 7:00 pm and Canisius on Aug. 24 at 12:00 pm. Over the past four seasons, the Bulls have earned a 2-1-1 overall record against the Bonnies while UB has won two straight over the Golden Griffins and defeated them by the score of 4-0 in an exhibition match last season. The following weekend, the Bulls will have their first road match of the season; they will take on Duquesne on Aug. 29 at 7:00 pm before returning home two days later for a non-conference dual with Drexel. The match against Drexel will mark the two teams first-ever meeting. The Bulls then will enter into their longest road trip of the season as they will be away from home for five straight contests. The road swing will kick off with a Big Four rivalry game against the Niagara Purple Eagles on Sep. 7 at 4:00 pm. The Bulls will then head to Blacksburg, Va. for their toughest test of the season, as they will take on national semifinalists from last season, the Virginia Tech Hokies. The contest against one of the ACC’s best teams will take place at Thompson Field on Sep. 12 at 4:00 pm. The following week the Bulls will take on Cornell on Sep. 19 before opening Mid-American Conference play with a pair of weekend games against Kent State and Ohio. The match against the Golden Flashes will be on Sep. 26 while the contest against the Bobcats will be on Sep. 28. Three of the next four MAC contests will take place at the friendly confines of UB Stadium for the Bulls. Buffalo will host Bowling Green on Oct. 3 at 7:00 pm and then Eastern Michigan on Oct. 5 at 12:00 pm. UB will then hit the road for a match against Northern Illinois on Oct. 10 at 7:00 pm before returning home to take on the Western Michigan Broncos at 12:00 pm on Oct. 12. UB will embark on their final road trip of the regular season on Oct. 17 as they travel to take on Central Michigan for a 4:00 pm start. On Oct. 19, the Bulls wrap up their road slate with a tough conference matchup with Toledo at 1:00 pm. The MAC regular season will come to end with three straight home matches for the Bulls. The first match of the home stand will be against Ball State on Oct. 24 at 5:00 pm. Two days later, the Bulls will take on Miami at UB Stadium at 12:00 pm before closing out the regular season with a match against Akron on Oct. 30 at 3:00 pm. Buffalo returns eight starters from the 2013 team, and welcomes in five newcomers to a squad that collected six victories while allowing less than a goal against per game (0.88) a season ago.

GOALKEEPER With four-year starter and arguably the best goalkeeper in program history, Ainsley Wheldon, graduating, the Bulls will lean on a trio of keepers to guide them to a MAC title. Likely to start from day one, freshman Laura Dougall (Pickering, Ontario) comes to Buffalo after a successful high school and club career in Canada. Dougall was a part of the Canadian National team’s training camp last season.

BURKE

BRANDAO FIFTH SEASON

FIRST SEASON

Shawn Burke was hired as the women’s soccer head coach at the University at Buffalo, UB Director of Athletics Danny White announced on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. Burke takes over the reins of the Bulls program after serving as an assistant coach at Buffalo for the last five seasons. Last season the Buffalo defense was stellar once again under the watchful eye of Burke, posting a season goals-against average of 0.88 while earning five shutouts. Under Burke’s tutelage, senior goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon, part of Burke’s first recruiting class, finished her career as one of the greatest goalkeepers to ever wear the UB uniform. Wheldon closed out her UB career ranking in the top-5 in all major goalkeeper categories in school history including second in shutouts (20), third in wins (22), third in saves (385) and fourth in goals-against average (1.20). Serving as the team’s liaison to academic services, Burke has helped the Bulls reach new heights in the classroom. Over his five season’s, the UB women’s soccer program has been one of the top teams on campus, accumulating over a 3.20 team grade point average in each season. Following the 2011 season, junior defender Shannon Algoe was named to the Capital One Academic All-American second team, becoming the first Bull to do so under Burke’s guidance. Algoe earned a 4.0 GPA and was one of 33 players recognized on the All-American teams. Also serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator, the Bulls have produced five All-MAC players along with three All-MAC freshman team members over Burke’s tenure. During his five seasons as an assistant coach at Buffalo, Burke’s defense proved to be one of the best units in the Mid-America Conference, averaging seven shutouts a season over the last three years. Burke’s defense recorded a school record 12 shutouts during the 2011 season, compiling a record of 12-5-4 on the season and advancing to the MAC Tournament semifinals. The successful 2011 season helped the Bulls jump 200 spots in the RPI rankings from the previous season, the biggest jump of any team in the country. Prior to joining the Bulls in 2009, Burke served as an assistant coach for the Canisius College men’s soccer team for two seasons. Burke was a standout player at Mercyhurst College from 1998-2002, winning five straight GLIAC Championships. In 2002, Burke was named Great Lakes Conference Defensive Player of the year. He was also a threetime first-team All-Conference and two-time All-Region player selection. In his final year of play at Mercyhurst, Burke helped lead the Lakers to the Division II Final Four and the school’s first and only #1 national ranking. Burke graduated from Mercyhurst in 2002 with a degree in elementary education and graduated this May with his Master’s in Higher Education Administration from the University at Buffalo. Burke holds a USSF “A” license as well as a US Soccer National Goalkeeping. Burke also holds a National Youth License and currently works with the local Black Watch Soccer Club.

Kimberly Brandao enters her fifth year as an assistant coach with the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team, her responsibilities include coordinating road trips, player feedback, field sessions and day to day operations. Brandao was also a part of the WNY Flash of the WPS from 2009-12. During her time with the Flash, Brandao led her squad to three championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Brandao played defense for the Flash as they were crowned WPS 2011 regular season Champions, as the highest scoring team in WPS history. Prior to joining her current squad, Brandao played the summer seasons with Jersey Sky Blue (2007-2008) and New Jersey Wildcats (2004) of the W-League. Brandao also brings international playing experience having played for Falkopings KIK in Sweden after the W-League’s 2007 season, and for C.F. Puebla in 2008 in Spain’s women’s first division. Brandao was a member of the Portugal Women’s National team from 2007-2012 and captain from 2009-2012. She played for the Portuguese National Team where she was recently a co-captain for the 2009 Algarve Cup in which Portugal recorded their best ever performance with three wins and one tie. She played ever minute of 23 career matches with the Portugal national team after her 2007 debut. Brandao didn’t come off the field in Portugal’s best ever run in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying campaign from September 2009 through June 2010. Brandao was a stand out defender for Rutgers University from 20022006 where she was a two-year captain, and two-year MVP for the Scarlet Knights. She was a four-time BIG EAST selection and helped lead the team to their highest ever national ranking of 11.

2000

Bulls bring home school’s first MAC regular season title 2000 was a special year for the UB Women’s Soccer program. With a returning core that featured two-time All-MAC all-star and Buffalo’s alltime leading scorer in Paula Listrani and fellow All-MAC performers in defender Linnea DiNallo, midfielder Elizabeth Pfeffer and goalkeeper Jaime Paula Listrani Adams, the Bulls were alFirst Team All-MAC ready a formidible team. The freshmen class, featuring Nicole Olszewski and Emily Russell, teamed with Listrani to form a potent offense, and Devon Russell teamed with DiNallo to make one of the league’s stingiest defenses.

The Bulls started off the season with a 7-1 defeat of Canisius as they won their first three games, including a 4-1 win at Niagara. Buffalo dropped its next two contests, nonconference games against Syracuse and Rutgers, but downed Kent State, 4-2, in the MAC opener on Sept. 13, with freshman Olszewski scoring twice in the Elizabeth Pfeffer effort. First Team All-MAC Nine days later, the Bulls lost to Ohio, 2-1, but shook that off, and proceeded to win five straight, with Listrani scoring a goal in double overtime at conference front-runner Western Michigan on October 8. She set the school’s all-time points record.

The team continued to roll behind Listrani, who scored in four-straight games at one point in the year. The Bulls heading into the final weekend with a slim one-game lead in the conference standings. A 1-1 tie with Bowling Green on Oct. 20 kept them in first after Miami (OH) lost a game and the Bulls clinched the title with a 3-1 win against Linnea DiNallo Toledo on Oct. 22. First Team All-MAC Although the Bulls lost to Miami (OH) in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, Buffalo had left its mark as a perennial conference contender, with then head coach Jean-A. Tassy earning the MAC Coach of the Year Award.

Nov. 5, 2002: A Day to remember

Bulls awarded with NCAA Sportsmanship Award UB Women’s soccer team , through the character of their actions following the events of Nov. 5, 2002, was awarded with the Citizenship Through Sports NCAA Award on June 15, 2003. It was on that day that tragedy struck the Bowling Green women’s soccer team as one of its players, Leslie Dawley, collapsed and died on the field in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. The game was halted and resumed the following day with the host Falcons winning 2-1 in double-overtime. However, it was the actions of then head coach Jean-A. Tassy and the UB women’s soccer team on that day that moved Bowling Green to nominate Buffalo for the award. Prior to the start of the game, UB chose to warm up on an adjacent practice field. The team did not want to disturb the area where Dawley had collapsed less that 20 hours earlier and wanted to give Bowling Green some time to reflect as a team. During player introductions, each UB player handed a single yellow rose to their counterpart, exchanging hugs and tears. Following the

introductions, the teams joined hands in a circle in the middle of the field for a moment of silence to honor Dawley. In an excerpt from the nomination letter, Bowling Green representatives wrote: “Everyone that was involved with the events of November 5th and 6th at Bowling Green State University will not soon forget the character and sportsmanship that was displayed by the University at Buffalo’s Women’s Soccer Team and Coaching Staff. It is this type of character and sportsmanship that makes collegiate athletics so great. These acts of compassion by the Buffalo players and coaching staff were not lost on the more than 700 fans that filled the stands that day and a number were heard to comment that they had never witnessed such sportsmanship.” The Citizenship Through Sports Alliance promotes sportsmanship and awards one recipient each year in its 10 member organizations, with one being the NCAA.
