Season Preview Head Coach Stu Riddle begins his second year at the helm of Buffalo in 2014, and with him comes a whole new wave of talent who will join a young core from 2013. With 19 of 24 players on the roster underclassman, the Bulls will be a conference power for years to come. Riddle’s offensive attack has been clicking early on in preseason camp as they have racked up 12 goals through two exhibition matches.

opposing defenses all season long. UB is of course led by 2013 MAC Newcomer of the Year Russell Cicerone (Bloomfield, MI) who led the Bulls with six goals and two assists as a freshman. Cicerone proved to be one of the quickest and most dangerous players in the conference last season and with his strong play this summer for FC Buffalo, people around the program are excited to see what is in store for the talented sophomore.

GOALKEEPER One of the most competitive and interesting battles throughout camp so far has been the starting goalkeeper battle. Waleed Cassis (Ottawa, Ontario) returns for his senior campaign following a junior season which saw him start 16 of 17 games while recording a goals-against average of 1.42 and two shutouts. Giving Cassis a push for the starting job is freshman Cameron Hogg (Auckland, New Zealand) who comes to Buffalo from Auckland, New Zealand. Hogg is a part of the New Zealand U-20 National Team as they prepare for the 2015 U-20 World Cup.

Another matchup nightmare for opposing defenses, Nicolai Berry (Auckland, New Zealand) returns for his sophomore campaign after finishing second on the team in scoring with three goals and four assists last year. Berry has the quickness and skill to score at any time for the Bulls and he will be leaned on to take off some of the pressure Cicerone will face this season.

Sophomore Ryan O’Mara (Tully, NY) will serve as the third string keeper for the Bulls and will provide great depth to one of the UB team strengths.

Marcus Hanson (Mississauga, Ontario) made the transition from defender to forward quite smoothly at the end of last season and he has only continued to grow at the position this season. Hanson closed out the 2013 season with two goals and two assists and has been all over the attacking third so far this preseason. Nicolay Netskar (Oppegaard, Norway) will also battle for some playing time in the very crowded forward group of the Bulls.

DEFENSE With the drastic turnover in the roster over the past two seasons, the back line of the defense will be one of the youngest in the conference this upcoming season. The Bulls back line will consist of three sophomores and three freshmen.

True freshman Abdulla Al-Kalisy (Auckland, New Zealand) has been the biggest surprise so far in preseason for the Bulls as he has came on with five goals through the first two exhibition matches of his career. The lightning quick forward has terrific strength and pace and he will provide an instant scoring punch to the Bulls high octane offense from day one.

Leading the back line this season will be sophomore Daniel Cramarossa (Unionville, Ontario) who was one of the Bulls pleasant surprises during his freshman campaign in 2013 as he started 17 of 18 games and was very strong defensively. Fellow sophomore Austin Place (Edmond, OK) will aim to elevate his strong play from last season after starting 15 of 16 games for the Bulls as a true freshman. Another returner to the Bulls that will have a key hand in the back end will be Alec Fisher (Battle Creek, MI). Fisher appeared in nine games as a true freshman last season and started two while showing signs of being an every day defensive stopper for the Bulls.

Providing much needed scoring depth from up front for UB will be sophomore Steven Stryker (Kalamazoo, MI) who appeared in 17 games and made four starts as a true freshman last year. Also giving some depth at the position will be a pair of freshman in Zack Compton (Gary, NC) and Jeremy Norman (Cologny, Switzerland).

A trio of newcomers to UB will look to provide the Bulls back end with some stability and stinginess, led by Fox Slotemaker (Nelson, New Zealand). Slotemaker comes to Buffalo following a successful high school and club career in New Zealand. Slotemaker is a tough-tackling, no-nonsense central defender that will be looked upon to make an immediate impact. Another impactful freshman defensively for the Bulls will be David Enstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden). Enstrom possesses great size, strength and with his technical abilities he is ready to come in right away and contribute. Also adding depth at the position will be Charlie Norman (Cologny, Switzerland). MIDFIELD The Buffalo midfield will return three players that saw loads of game action last season. Leading the way for the Bulls is Kristian Lee-Him (Pickering, Ontario) who appeared in 17 games while starting in 12 last season. Lee-Him is a very experienced player who recorded one assist and was a vocal team leader in 2013. Braden Culver (Oakville, Ontario) returns for his sophomore season after starting 15 of 18 games as a true freshman. Ryan Pereira (London, Ontario) will see lots of action in the midfield as well after starting nine games last season under Riddle. Providing the Bulls with much needed depth at the midfield spot is Iona College transfer, Dylan Cope (New York, NY). Cope appeared in 13 games for Iona last season and will be a major contributor to UB as a junior. Another transfer, Sean Young (Land O’Lakes, FL) will vey for some significant playing time in the midfield after playing at North Florida last season. The sophomore will come in right away and give the Bulls steady minutes off the bench.

Riddle Stu Riddle continues to rebuild in his second season as head men’s soccer coach at Buffalo, after being named to the position on January 2, 2013. Riddle comes to Buffalo from Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan where, in four seasons, he revitalized the Broncos’ men’s soccer program. In his first season with the team, he brought in a talented group of 15 newcomers that had growing pains but showed flashes of brilliance. That was highlighted by freshman Russell Cicerone being named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and made the All-MAC First Team. As a team, the Bulls increased its scoring and saw year-to-year improvements in goals-against average and save percentage. Riddle restored WMU to one of the finest in the Mid-American Conference and Great Lakes Region during his tenure, making backto-back appearances in the MAC Championship game in 2010 and 2011. Riddle led the Broncos to winning seasons in two of his four years, something that had only been done twice in the 15 seasons prior to his hiring. In four seasons, Riddle went 33-36-9, had 10 all-conference selections, eight all-tournament team selections, six Academic All-MAC honorees and produced an individual NCAA statistical champion in goals per game. The 2012 Bronco squad (11-6-2) carried a 3.45 team Grade Point Average which was the second highest in NCAA Division I men’s soccer and fourth amongst all divisions combined. Prior to joining the Broncos, Riddle helped guide Fairfield University to a 2008 NCAA Tournament appearance after defeating previously unbeaten and No. 6 nationally ranked Loyola to win the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament championship. In 2008 Riddle also accepted the challenge of developing the Kalamazoo Outrage soccer program with its first season of competition coming that summer. The Outrage finished its inaugural campaign with a 10-7-1 record, beating perennial Premier Development League (PDL) powerhouses the Michigan Bucks and Chicago Fire in the PDL playoffs before losing to eventual national champion Thunder Bay Chill in the last eight of the competition. Riddle spent two seasons as an assistant soccer coach at the University of Evansville, beginning with the 2005 campaign. In his second year with the Purple Aces the team posted a 9-8-0 record, only the program’s third winning season since 1997.

Riddle’s coaching resume also includes time as head coach for the Kalamazoo Kingdom PDL in 2006 where former LA Galaxy MLS midfielder Josh Tudela and 2006 National High School Player of the Year current Portland Timbers and U.S. National Team midfielder Eric Alexander spent a season playing under Riddle’s tutelage. As a player, Riddle played collegiately at Coastal Carolina University where he was twice named team MVP and was an All-Big South Conference team member in 1997 and 1998. Riddle signed with New Zealand’s first-ever professional soccer team the Football Kingz in 1999 where he played with Oceania Player of the Century Wynton Rufer and with current San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) Assistant Coach Jason Batty. Riddle went on to play professionally in England with Oxford City, Scotland with Greenock Morton and in Australia with Altona Magic. While at Greenock Morton, Riddle was coached by European Cup winner and former Liverpool and Scotland national team star Peter Cormack. He also played in the United States with the Des Moines Menace and West Michigan Edge in the PDL. As a youth player Riddle played alongside Washington head coach Jamie Clark for Western Suburbs FC as a guest player in New Zealand’s national under-19 tournament in which he was one of three nominations for Player of the Tournament. Riddle made his international debut for the New Zealand Olympic All Whites in January 1996, appearing in a 2-0 victory over the Solomon Islands. He went on to play in four national team games under current University of Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark, highlighted by an appearance in a 1-0 victory over arch rivals Australia in Adelaide. Riddle was born in Luton, England, but raised in Wellington, New Zealand. On Aug. 16, 2011, he was sworn in as a naturalized U.S. citizen during an oath ceremony in Grand Rapids, Mich. Riddle graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Coastal Carolina University and a Master of Science in Public Administration from the University of Evansville. He and his wife, Jessica, reside in Kalamazoo. The couple has two daughters, Rylee Noelle (born March 16, 2010) and Nora Jane (7/31/12).

Assistant Coach Recruiting Coordinator First Season Buffalo State, ‘05

Cody Camp is in his second season as the goalkeepers coach for UB. Camp was a former player under Riddle at Western Michigan before an injury led him to a new career as a coach. He joined the Bronco’s staff in 2011 as a student assistant.

The men’s soccer team announced the addition of Kevin Brenner to the coaching staff for the 2014 season. Brenner will be an assistant for the Bulls after four seasons across town with Canisius.

“I’m delighted that Cody has chosen to join me on staff,” coach Riddle said. “His mentoring and training of the goalkeepers at Western Michigan was exceptional and I have no doubt that the current players will flourish under his tutelage”

“I am extremely pleased that Kevin has accepted the assistant coaching position with us,” head coach Stu Riddle said. “He has terrific ties locally and is well respected in the soccer community which will help us with recruiting and as we continue to brand our program.”

For his career between the pipes, Camp made four starts as a freshman in 2009, and started in two games in 2010 before his injury. He then moved to the coaching staff for the 2011 season, when the team made a run to the Mid-American Conference final after beating the defending national champion Akron in the semifinal round. Camp’s second season as an assistant was one of equal success for the team’s defense, as the cumulative goals-against average of the team dropped precipitously from 1.77 in 2011 to just 0.91 as the team won 11 games. In year one at UB, the goalies lowered the team’s GAA and raised the save percentage from .724 to .774. As a high school goalie, Camp was named Northern Indiana Player of the Year senior year after leading Mishawaka Marian to the state title game. He also earned first team All-Northern Indiana Conference, first team alldistrict and all-state honors as a senior. In the season before, as a junior, he set the school record with 13 shutouts and was named second team All-NIC and second team all-district. The son of Craig and Beth Camp, Cody’s younger brother Connor is currently a goalkeeper for Western Michigan.

Ben

Fredrickson Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season Regis, ‘14

Ben Fredrickson is in his first season as a volunteer assistant coach. He recently finished his own college career, playing out west for powerhouse program Regis University for four seasons. With the Rangers, he helped reach the Elite 8 in the NCAA Division II tournament. That followed up a junior year where the team went undefeated in the regular season. Fredrickson played on numerous club teams in his native New Zealand, where he struck up an early relationship with Riddle.

While with Canisius, Brenner helped lead the team to a number two ranking in the 2012 NSCAA North Atlantic poll and received votes in the national poll for the first time in the program’s history. Canisius matched a school-record with eight wins during the season and had three players selected to the NSCAA All-Region Team during the last two years – matching the program’s all-time total before his arrival. The Griffs went from three wins in the season before he joined, to 15 in his two final seasons. Prior to his time with the Griffs, Brenner spent six seasons as an assistant coach with his alma mater, Buffalo State, guiding the team to the best record in nearly a quarter century. With the Bengals, Brenner assisted with the day-to-day operations of the program and training sessions, and also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator from 2007 to 2010. In his playing career, he was a two-year captain and three year starter at Buffalo State after transferring from SUNY Cortland. While at Buffalo State Brenner helped lead the team to a regional ranking during his senior campaign and an 11-5-2 record, the team’s best mark since 1984 to date. He finished the campaign ranked third on the team in points and led the Bengals in game-winning tallies. After finishing his collegiate career, Brenner was a scout and a reserve player for the Queen City Football Club of the NPSL from 2006 to 2008, while also serving as a head coach in the Buffalo & Western New York Junior Soccer League for Amherst from 2005 to 2008. He won two BWNYJSL titles at Amherst and also guided the team to the quarterfinals of the 2008 New York State Cup. Brenner also serves as the head coach with Empire Buffalo, which is a member of the US Soccer Developmental Academy and participates in the US Soccer Region 1 League. A member of the NSCAA, Brenner holds two USSF National licenses, while completing his NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma, NSCAA National Diploma and his NSCAA Advance National Diploma. A native of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Brenner captained the Hornets during his high school career and is a two-time All-Champlain Valley First Team selection. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in business economics from Buffalo State in 2004 and is currently pursuing his master’s in applied economics and finance.

Fredrickson earned his bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science from Regis in May 2014 with merit, and has worked as a personal exercise consultant and academy coach in New Zealand.
