2014 Buffalo Volleyball Sunahara Rings In A New Era Of UB Volleyball
Eight newcomers join a mix of seven returnees A new era of University at Buffalo women’s volleyball begins in 2014 as long-time head coach Reed Sunahara takes the reigns of the Bulls. Sunahara inherits a group of seven returnees from last year, but welcomes in eight new faces as the Bulls graduated six last season, including the MAC Defensive Player of the year. Sunahara brings 14 years of head coaching experience to the Bulls, including 12 seasons at the University of Cincinnati, where he led the Bearcats to eight NCAA Tournament appearances. Last season, Sunahara served as an assistant coach with the United States National Team, travelling all over the world with the best players in the nation. Sunahara put together a staff of assistant coaches, who both have ties to the Western New York area. Stephanie Albano, formerly Stephanie Jansma, is a former standout at Lancaster High School and went on to have a successful career at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Albano has spent time coaching in the area at Canisius. Also on the staff is Donald Gleason, who spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Yale. Locally, he served as an assistant coach at Medaille College, while also spending a spring assisting the University of Southern California. This staff will inherit a group of talented veterans and newcomers, who look to make a splash in the Mid-American Conference. The group is led by junior Tahleia Bishop, who was named first-team All-MAC last season, joining former teammate Kelly Svoboda as UBs first ever AllMAC First Team selections. Bishop was also named honorable mention All-Region following the year. Bishop, who played in the offseason for the Jamaican National Team, finished her sophomore season with a career-best 400 kills and hit .244 on the year. Bishop looks to lead the Bulls this year as a junior with some uncertainty amongst UB’s senior class. Senior outside hitter Liz Scott has continued to fight concussion issues and was limited to just 16 matches last season, with 136 kills and a team-best .276 hitting percentage. Fellow classmate Sable Staller has missed each of the last two seasons as she has continued to rehab a knee injury suffered in the summer of 2012. With those injuries, the junior class has continued to shoulder the load for the UB returnees. In addition to Bishop, the Bulls return Amber Hatchett, who had a breakout season as a sophomore. After seeing limited action as a freshman, Hatchett played in 103 sets, finishing with 115 kills and finishing second on the team with 128 total blocks, including 12 solos. Hatchett helped lead a blocking attack last season that was amongst the best in the Mid-American Conference. The junior class continues with Fayetteville, GA native Akeila Lain who played in 105 sets last season, finishing with 173 kills and 97 total blocks. Lain split time playing in the middle last year, as well as on the right side. Fellow junior Megan Lipski saw action in 51 sets last season as she finished with 88 kills and 66 digs. Also returning for the Bulls this season is sophomore setter Megan Lin. The Taiwan native played in three matches last year for UB. The rest of the squad is made up of a group of newcomers, including a couple of transfers and six true freshmen. Junior Marissa Prinzbach comes to the Bulls after spending two years at UConn, where she served as the starting setter for the Huskies last season. Prinzbach had 1,221 assists in 33 matches last year as she also had 48 kills, 22 aces, 58 blocks, and 261 digs. Prinzbach hails from Cincinnati, OH where she used to attend volleyball camps that were run by Sunahara and his staff.
HATCHETT
Also joining the club with previous collegiate experience is redshirt sophomore Danielle Marotto. A local product from Lancaster, NY, Marotto spent the last two years at UMass-Boston. She suffered a season-ending knee injury as a freshman and last season she saw action in seven matches. Marotto will provide depth for the Bulls as a defensive specialist. The Bulls bring in six freshmen that span over three countries. Niki Bozinoski expects to get the first crack at libero, where the Bulls need to replace the 2013 MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Bozinoski had a distinguished high school and club career in Canada. She led her club team to an 18U Canadian National Title, while being named an All-Star Libero in 2012. Bozinoski played outside hitter for her Abbey Park High School team, leading them to a 35-0 record as a senior and an Ontario Provincial Championship. Outside hitter Skyler Day joins the Bulls from Minooka, IL where she set school and Southwest Prairie Conference records for kills in a season. She is a three-time Southwest Prairie All-Conference selection and was named to the Chicago Tribune Top 50. Day finished with 248 kills and 188 digs during her senior season at Minooka. She becomes the second UB player from the state of Illinois joining Hatchett.

The Bulls will also welcome Tessa Ooyama from nearby Fairport, NY. Ooyama is a defensive specialist that played her club volleyball for Rob Werkmeister and former UB setter Lindsey Schlegel at VolleyFX. She was also a Monroe County All-League First Team selection and she will provide depth for the Bulls in the back row. UB went all the way to Queretaro, Mexico for Ana Paula Kuthy Rodriguez who will see action for UB both in the middle and on the right side. Kuthy Rodriguez won the Copa del Borrego for her club volleyball squad in Mexico before coming to Western New York. Also providing depth in the middle will be Plainwell, MI native Hannah Varley and Indianapolis, IN product Cassie Shado. Varley was named to the Allegheny County All-Area team in each of her four years at Plainwell High School and was also an All-Conference selection in each of the last two years. She brings some size to the Bulls as she is the team’s tallest player standing at 6-3. Shado is an extremely athletic player out of Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis where she was an ICC All-Conference selection last year, recording 173 kills and 98 total blocks. She helped lead her team to a sectional championship in 2011. The Bulls will get a chance to showcase their new roster for the home fans early as they open the season hosting the UB Invite. This year, the event features five teams and it will span over three days during Labor Day weekend. UB will open the season against Lehigh on Aug. 29 at 7pm before playing two matches on the second day against Siena and Canisius, respectively. UB concludes the weekend by hosting Ole Miss out of the SEC on Sunday afternoon. UB then heads to the road for each of the next three weekends continuing to play in a tournament format. The Bulls will go to Tampa, FL

on Sep. 5-6 for the USF Tournament where it will meet up with South Florida in a battle of the Bulls in the opening match. UB will also face Florida International and South Carolina State during the weekend. UB then goes to Chicago the following weekend for the UIC Tournament, which features the host Flames as well as Western Illinois and Eastern Kentucky. The Bulls will see Western Illinois in back-to-back weekends as it will also be at the Hoosier Classic during the weekend of Feb. 19-20. UB will face the Leathnecks, Butler, and the host Indiana Hoosiers during the event. The Bulls close out non-conference play with a mid-week home match against Niagara on Tuesday, Sep. 23. The Bulls open up Mid-American Conference play at home on September 26 as they host Bowling Green and Miami (OH) during the first weekend of conference play. UB will then hit the road for five of the next six matches, with the lone home contest coming on October 11 against Ball State. The Bulls will have home matches against Eastern Michigan (10/24) and Central Michigan (10/25) and will then close out the MAC with three of the final four matches at home in November. The Bulls will host Kent State (11/7) and Ohio (11/8) before hosting Akron on Nov. 13. UB will close out the regular season at Toledo on Nov. 15. The MAC Tournament will run from Nov. 21-23 and will be held on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, OH after the Bobcats won the regular season last year. UB will return home on November 29 to host Albany before NCAA Tournament play. While the Bulls do have many new pieces for the 2014 season, Coach Sunahara will look to put together the winning combination and bring the success to Buffalo that he has brought to every other stop in his impressive coaching career.

Sunahara gained a familiarity with the FIVB World Grand Prix as he served as the U.S. Women’s team leader during the 2010 World Grand Prix edition.
