Season Preview EXPERIENCED BULLS SET SIGHTS HIGH FOR 2015

GOALKEEPER One of the most competitive and interesting battles throughout camp so far has been the starting goalkeeper battle. Sophomores Cameron Hogg (Auckland, New Zealand) and Joseph Kuta (Mississauga, Ontario) have been going back and forth early on with neither flinching or giving into the other. Hogg returns to UB after a solid freshman campaign that saw him earn four starts in goal, accumulating a 1-3 record with a 2.25 goals-against average and one cleansheet while serving as backup to Waleed Cassis who earned a professional contract following the 2014 season. Kuta transferred to UB after playing one season at Robert Morris where he posted a 7-7-2 record with a 1.32 goals-against average and four cleansheets. Redshirt Sophomore Ryan O’Mara (Tully, NY) will serve as the third string keeper for the Bulls and will provide great depth to one of the UB team strengths. DEFENSE Defensively the Bulls lose no starters from a season ago and have really began to gel over the spring and exhibition seasons. Leading the way are a pair of big center backs in Fox Slotemaker (Nelson, New Zealand) and David Enstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden). Slotemaker returns to the Bulls after starting 15 of 16 matches while Enstrom returns to the middle after making 16 starts as true freshmen. A trio of juniors will also be competing for the final two starting positions on the Bulls defense this upcoming season. Daniel Cramarossa (Unionville, Ontario) looks to be locked into the left back starting spot but Austin Place (Edmond, OK) and Alec Fisher (Battle Creek, MI) are in a tight battle for the final starting spot come opening day. Cramarossa started 12 matches a season ago and notched an assist while Place started 16 matches and recorded a goal and Fisher started 12 matches of his own.

FORWARD Quite possibly one of the most intriguing attack groups in the entire MidAmerican Conference, the Bulls have multiple dangerous players that will test opposing defenses all season long. UB is of course led by 2014 All-MAC first team member Russell Cicerone (Bloomfield, MI) who led the Bulls with a career-high 10 goals and three assists as a sophomore. Cicerone became the first Bull since Steve Butcher in 1998 and 1999 to earn back-to-back first team All-MAC accolades. Cicerone proved to be one of the quickest and most dangerous players in the conference last season and with his strong play this summer, people around the program are excited to see what is in store for the talented junior. Senior Marcus Hanson (Mississauga, Ontario) will be aiming to improve on a solid junior campaign that saw him start all 16 matches while ranking second on the team with two goals and four assists for eight points. Hanson has shown flashes of greatness when he is working in unison with Cicerone but the Bulls will be looking for him to be a consistant contributor this season. Marshall transfer Scott Doney (Tauranga, New Zealand) will add a different dimension to the Bulls attack that they have not had in many years, and that is an aerial presence. Doney’s 6-5 thick build will help the Bulls win balls in the air as well as in crowded spaces in front of the net. The big target has made strides since joining the Bulls during the spring and will be relied upon in the starting lineup to score big goals for the Bulls. Providing the Bulls with a much needed spark off the bench this season will be a pair of experienced players in Steven Stryker (Kalamazoo, MI) and Nicolay Netskar (Oppegaard, Norway). Stryker provides the Bulls with an explosive first couple steps and attacking sense while Netskar gives the Bulls a crafty forward that can create his own space and also create opportunities for his teammates. Freshman Hunter Walsh (Kenmore, NY) will also push the other forwards for some playing time after spending a successful high school career at local St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.

Also adding some solid depth to the UB defense will be junior Braden Scales (Lockport, NY) and freshman Daniel Warner (Lockport, NY). MIDFIELD The Buffalo midfield will return three players that saw loads of game action last season. Leading the way for the Bulls is Braden Culver (Oakville, Ontario) who started 10 matches a season ago for the Bulls and scored his first career goal. Ryan Pereira (London, Ontario) will be looked upon to create chances going forward as the crafty midfielder made nine starts a season ago and notched one assist. Butler transfer Nick Forrester (Auckland, New Zealand) has made a major impression on the UB coaching staff already this fall as he has demonstrated he can play multiple positions on the field. Forrester will most likely be used in the holding midfield position as he is athletic and aggressive enough to shut down the opposing teams best player night in and night out. Forrester may also slid back and play his more natural center back position if the Bulls need. Dylan Cope (New York, NY) will see a lot of action earl on for the Bulls off the bench as he has proved he can be a contributor in the midfield after appearing in 16 matches and making eight starts a season ago. Freshman Ryan Aspenleiter (Pittsford, NY) will also give the Bulls some solid depth in the midfield this season.

2015 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO MEN’S SOCCER

Head Coach Stu Riddle begins his third year at the helm of Buffalo in 2015, and for the first time since arriving in Buffalo he has an experienced bunch out on the pitch. The Bulls return nine starters from a team that narrowly missed out on the MAC Tournament a season ago. UB has 12 upperclassmen on the roster and return their top two leading scorers from a season ago. Riddle’s defense has been clicking through the spring season and early in preseason as the Bulls owned a 6-0-1 record over their last seven matches and havent conceded a goal in their last three victories.

Coaching Staff Stu

Riddle Stu Riddle enters his third season at the helm of the University at Buffalo men’s soccer program. Riddle led the rebuilding Bulls to a 5-10-2 overall record in 2014 including a 4-1-1 mark at UB Stadium. Under Riddle’s watchful eye, the youthful Bulls continued to make strides in 2014 as they barely missed out on a spot in the MidAmerican Conference Tournament, posting a 1-2-2 MAC record. UB’s offense led the way as the Bulls scored 19 goals, their most since 2011. Flourishing in his second season under Riddle, Russell Cicerone had a magical season for the Bulls as he finished with 10 goals and three assists en route to earning his second-straight First Team AllMAC team honors. Cicerone became the first Bull since Steve Butcher in 1998-99 to earn back-to-back First Team All-MAC accolades. Off the field the Bulls had their strongest semester in the classroom as they earned a team GPA of 3.374, giving them the highest average of any of the men’s teams at UB. Riddle also saw a program-record eight Bulls get named to the Academic All-MAC squad with Nicolai Berry, Waleed Cassis, Braden Culver, Marcus Hanson, Kristian LeeHim, Nicolay Netskar, Ryan Pereira and Steven Stryker all earning a spot on the team. In his first season with the team, he brought in a talented group of 15 newcomers that had growing pains but showed flashes of brilliance. That was highlighted by freshman Russell Cicerone being named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year and made the All-MAC First Team. As a team, the Bulls increased its scoring and saw year-to-year improvements in goals-against average and save percentage. Riddle restored WMU to one of the finest in the Mid-American Conference and Great Lakes Region during his tenure, making backto-back appearances in the MAC Championship game in 2010 and 2011. Riddle led the Broncos to winning seasons in two of his four years, something that had only been done twice in the 15 seasons prior to his hiring. In four seasons, Riddle went 33-36-9, had 10 all-conference selections, eight all-tournament team selections, six Academic All-MAC honorees and produced an individual NCAA statistical champion in goals per game. The 2012 Bronco squad (11-6-2) carried a 3.45 team Grade Point Average which was the second highest in NCAA Division I men’s soccer and fourth amongst all divisions combined. Prior to joining the Broncos, Riddle helped guide Fairfield University to a 2008 NCAA Tournament appearance after defeating previously unbeaten and No. 6 nationally ranked Loyola to win the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament championship. In 2008 Riddle also accepted the challenge of developing the Kalamazoo Outrage soccer program with its first season of competition coming that summer. The Outrage finished its inaugural campaign with a 10-7-1 record, beating perennial Premier

Development League (PDL) powerhouses the Michigan Bucks and Chicago Fire in the PDL playoffs before losing to eventual national champion Thunder Bay Chill in the last eight of the competition. Riddle spent two seasons as an assistant soccer coach at the University of Evansville, beginning with the 2005 campaign. In his second year with the Purple Aces the team posted a 9-8-0 record, only the program’s third winning season since 1997. Riddle’s coaching resume also includes time as head coach for the Kalamazoo Kingdom PDL in 2006 where former LA Galaxy MLS midfielder Josh Tudela and 2006 National High School Player of the Year current Portland Timbers and U.S. National Team midfielder Eric Alexander spent a season playing under Riddle’s tutelage. As a player, Riddle played collegiately at Coastal Carolina University where he was twice named team MVP and was an All-Big South Conference team member in 1997 and 1998. Riddle signed with New Zealand’s first-ever professional soccer team the Football Kingz in 1999 where he played with Oceania Player of the Century Wynton Rufer and with current San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) Assistant Coach Jason Batty. Riddle went on to play professionally in England with Oxford City, Scotland with Greenock Morton and in Australia with Altona Magic. While at Greenock Morton, Riddle was coached by European Cup winner and former Liverpool and Scotland national team star Peter Cormack. He also played in the United States with the Des Moines Menace and West Michigan Edge in the PDL. As a youth player Riddle played alongside Washington head coach Jamie Clark for Western Suburbs FC as a guest player in New Zealand’s national under-19 tournament in which he was one of three nominations for Player of the Tournament. Riddle made his international debut for the New Zealand Olympic All Whites in January 1996, appearing in a 2-0 victory over the Solomon Islands. He went on to play in four national team games under current University of Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark, highlighted by an appearance in a 1-0 victory over arch rivals Australia in Adelaide. Riddle was born in Luton, England, but raised in Wellington, New Zealand. On Aug. 16, 2011, he was sworn in as a naturalized U.S. citizen during an oath ceremony in Grand Rapids, Mich. Riddle graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Coastal Carolina University and a Master of Science in Public Administration from the University of Evansville. He and his wife, Jessica, reside in Kalamazoo. The couple has two daughters, Rylee Noelle (born March 16, 2010) and Nora Jane (7/31/12).

Head Coach 3rd Season at Buffalo Coastal Carolina ‘98 @StuRiddle

Coaching Staff Cody

Davie

Assistant Coach Third Season Western Michigan, ‘11

Assistant Coach First Season Notre Dame College, ‘07

Cody Camp is in his second season as the goalkeepers coach for UB. Camp was a former player under Riddle at Western Michigan before an injury led him to a new career as a coach. He joined the Bronco’s staff in 2011 as a student assistant.

Davie Carmichael begins his first season as assistant coach for the University at Buffalo men’s soccer team. Carmichael brings four years of head coaching experience to Buffalo.

“I’m delighted that Cody has chosen to join me on staff,” coach Riddle said. “His mentoring and training of the goalkeepers at Western Michigan was exceptional and I have no doubt that the current players will flourish under his tutelage”

“I am delighted to welcome Davie on board,” Stated Stu Riddle. “His strong playing background and head coaching success at the NCAA level helps cement the strong foundation already in place and reinforces our commitment to the progression of the program.”

For his career between the pipes, Camp made four starts as a freshman in 2009, and started in two games in 2010 before his injury. He then moved to the coaching staff for the 2011 season, when the team made a run to the Mid-American Conference final after beating the defending national champion Akron in the semifinal round. Camp’s second season as an assistant was one of equal success for the team’s defense, as the cumulative goals-against average of the team dropped precipitously from 1.77 in 2011 to just 0.91 as the team won 11 games.

Carmichael comes to the Bulls after four very successful seasons as the head coach at Lake Erie College where he turned the program around from a 1-16-1 record the season before he took over, to a 11-5-2 mark last season. He led the Storm to back-to-back GLIAC playoff appearances while also earning GLIAC Coach of the Year recognition last season. He led his team to the GLIAC semifinals in 2013 and 2014 as well as a NCAA DII Eastern College Athletic Conference finals appearance in 2011.

In year one at UB, the goalies lowered the team’s GAA and raised the save percentage from .724 to .774.

Over his four seasons at Lake Erie, Carmichael had 11 All-GLIAC Conference team selections, nine All-Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association team selections and four NSCAA All-Midwest Region team selections. Carmichael’s squads were also great off the field, earning three NSCAA Scholar All-East Region selections over his four campaigns.

As a high school goalie, Camp was named Northern Indiana Player of the Year senior year after leading Mishawaka Marian to the state title game. He also earned first team All-Northern Indiana Conference, first team alldistrict and all-state honors as a senior. In the season before, as a junior, he set the school record with 13 shutouts and was named second team All-NIC and second team all-district. The son of Craig and Beth Camp, Cody has a younger brother Connor who played goalkeeper for Western Michigan.

Prior to taking over the head coaching duties at Lake Erie College, Carmichael was a Graduate Assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Lake Erie College from 2009-10. He started his collegiate playing career at Northwood University where he was named to the All-GLIAC first team and All-Midwest Region first team during the 2004 season. After transferring to Notre Dame College of Ohio in 2005, Carmichael continued great play on the field as he led his team to back-to-back AMC North Division Championships while also helping them qualify for the NAIA Final Four in 2005. Carmichael was awarded for his great collegiate career at Notre Dame College in 2015 when he was inducted into the schools Hall of Fame.

Doherty Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season Ulster Jordanstown, ‘11 Declan Doherty begins his first season as volunteer assistant coach for the UB men’s soccer program. Doherty joins the Bulls staff after one season as head coach and marketing director for Global Premier Soccer of New York. During the 2014-15 campaigns, Doherty coached three GPS teams, two of which won league titles. Doherty also spent the 2014 season as head coach of the Lancaster High School boys JV squad, leading them to an undefeated (15-0-1) record in his first season.

Carmichael started his international playing career for the Scotland U18 National team where he was the captain during the 2001 campaign. In 2001, Carmichael was a teammate of coach Riddle on the Greenock Morton Football club, a Scottish second Division squad. A native of Scotland, Carmichael earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Notre Dame College where he competed for the nationally-ranked NAIA Falcons for two seasons before earning his degree in 2007. He then earned his Masters of Education degree from Lake Erie College in 2011.

Doherty graduated with a degree in sports studies from the University of Ulster Jordanstown in the United Kingdom.
