SEASON PREVIEW GOALKEEPERS After entering last season with a question mark between the pipes, UB has found their goalkeeper of the future in sophomore Laura Dougall. The Ontario native turned in the most impressive season in program history in goal despite being just a freshman. Dougall finished off the campaign with a 16-2-3 overall record to go along with a 0.54 goals-against average and 13 cleansheets. Her 16 wins and 13 cleansheets set program records while her 0.54 GAA ranked second in program history for a season. Backing her up will be a pair of very strong goalkeepers who will push Dougall for the opportunity to start next season for the Bulls. NYIT transfer Cassie Betancourt has trained hard and shown flashes of greatness for the Bulls while senior Mackenzie White finally returns to the field after injury problems kept her out of each of the past two seasons. Betancourt and White each have unique skill sets that will push Dougall to perform at new heights in 2015.
DEFENSE The key to the UB success in 2014 and the reason they won their first MAC Tournament Championship was their stingy defense that allowed just 17 goals over 22 matches. The Bulls hard-nosed defense which recorded a program-record 14 clean sheets was led by third team All-American and MAC Defensive Player of the Year Jackie Hall at the center back position. Hall turned in one of the most impressive defensive campaigns in UB history as her aggressive style of play helped the Bulls set a programrecord shutout streak (482 minutes) and also limited 16 of 22 opponents to five shots on goal of less. Although Hall collected all the accolades, Kristin Markiewicz and Angel Hart deserve a lot of credit for the great defensive season. Markiewicz calming presence on the backline helped lead the Bulls to a program-record 16 victories while Hart was one of the most underrated players in the MAC. Hart’s strong play made the UB defense nearly impossible to beat on a game-to-game basis. The Bulls will have to replace second team All-MAC performer Sophie Therien on the backline as she graduated following the historic 2014 campaign. UB will have multiple options to replace Therien including junior Andrea Niper. Dana Lytle and Ashley Evans will provide the UB defense with some much needed depth.
MIDFIELD In the midfield, UB will return two key components in senior Kassidy Kidd and sophomore Julia Benati. Kidd had her best season as a Bull in 2014 as she was dangerous every time she touched the ball, finishing the season with a career-high two goals and four assists for eight points while starting 21 matches. Benati came in and started all 22 matches for the Bulls during her freshman campaign as she proved to be one of the most dangerous midfielders in the conference, scoring three goals and adding four assists while earning MAC All-Freshman team honors. With two holes left in the midfield by departed senios Courtney Mann and Megan Giesen, the Bulls will be searching for the right fit to carry on their defensive success from a season ago. Alabama transfer Moira Petrie has a good chance at coming right in and starting for the Bulls in the midfield after a freshman campaign that saw her appear in 16 matches for the Tide. If Andrea Niper doesnt make the switch to defense, she will be a difference maker for the Bulls in the midfield after a successful end to her sophomore campaign. Niper was able to score two postseason goals for the Bulls including a double overtime game-winner in the MAC semifinals to propel the Bulls into their second-ever MAC Championship game. Also adding some depth in the midfield for the Bulls are Jessica Marlowe and Kori Hughes, both of which are coming off of season-ending injuries last season.
FORWARD Despite losing MAC Offensive Player of the Year Katie Roberts to graduation, the 2015 Bulls roster is packed with scoring punch for second-year head coach Shawn Burke. The Bulls return dynamic junior forward Celina Carrero who finished off her impressive second season as a Bull with a career-high six goals and a team-leading seven assists for 19 points. Carrero earned second team All-MAC honors as she started all 22 matches for UB, becoming the Bulls biggest playmaker and most dangerous threat down the strecth.

Along with a flourishing Carrero, the Bulls gained a huge goal scorer in Carissima Cutrona, who transfered after spending one season at Colgate. Cutrona sat out the 2014 season due to injury but during her high school career she was one of the best goal scorers in the country as she notched 161 career goals and 68 career assists at Williamsville South High School. Joining the dynamic duo of Carrero and Cutrona up front are N’Dea Johnson and Alex Lambert. Johnson returns after missing the past two seasons while Lambert returns for her sophomore season after producing a nice spark off the bench for the Bulls last season.
NEWCOMERS Second-year head coach Shawn Burke announced the signing of six freshman along with two transfers for the upcoming season. Moira Petrie comes to the Bulls after spending just one season at the University of Alabama. In her freshman campaign for the Tide, Petrie established herself as an early midfield option off the bench as she appeared in 16 of Alabama’s 20 contests. She earned her first career collegiate start in a 1-0 win against Vanderbilt on Sept. 28, helping the Tide earn their second straight conference road shutout, something that has happened only twice in program history. She recorded six shots including two shots on goal during her freshman season. Carissima Cutrona returns to Western New York after sitting out her freshman season at Colgate due to injury. Cutrona was a heavily sought after recruit after posting eye-popping numbers during her five-year career at Williamsville South High School. The three-year team captain was named to the All-WNY team all four years while earning NSCAA All-American status as a junior and senior. The electric forward produced a school record 161 goals and 68 assists during her five seasons including an astonishing 40 goals and 28 assists as a senior. Cutrona led the Billies to three straight sectional championships while leading the team in scoring in each season. Rebecca Bramble joins the Bulls from nearby Brampton, Onatrio where she starred for the Brams United club along with St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School as a forward. Bramble was named high school Athlete of the Year as a freshman and was named soccer team Most Valuable Player as a sophomore. Bramble has been a member of the Ontario Provincial team since 2011. At the club level, Bramble was a key factor in her teams’ three national titles, from 2011-13. During the 2011 and 2012 campaigns, she led her club team to a #1 ranking to go along with League Championships and Ontario Cup Championships. Brianna Shingary comes to the Bulls following a four-year career at Medina High School for head coach Doug Coreno. The two-year team captain had a dynamic senior campaign, which saw her accumulate a career-best 19 goals and 11 assists as she led Medina to a 13-3-3 overall record. Ranks in the top-25 in school history in goals and assists and was named first team AllConference as a freshman and senior. As a junior she was named second-team All-Ohio while garnering first team All-Ohio recognition as a senior. She also led her team to back-to-back district championships and a conference championship during her final season. Shingary was also very successful at the club level, currently playing for Ambassadors FC. She formerly played club soccer for the multiple State Cup winning Cleveland FC, a club that produced three Bulls from their 2014 MAC Championship squad. Kayla Hospodka comes to UB following a standout career as a defender at South Side High School for head coach Shannon McEntee. Hospodka played four years while leading the Cyclones to three county titles and four state championships. The hard-nosed defender helped lead her squad to a 15-4-1 record during her senior campaign and their fourth-straight state championship. She also had a successful club career playing for both the Albertson Fury and the Long Island Fury. Rachel Villalta comes to Buffalo following a successful high school career at Shattuck St. Mary’s for head coach Joe DeMay. After a strong junior campaign in 2013, Villalta was named Most Improved Player for Shattuck St. Mary’s as she demonstrated great determination and ability at the holding midfield position. She led her team to the State Cup finals in 2013 and helped lead her team to the Mayor’s Cup championship in Las Vegas during her senior campaign. Meghan Simmons was a key member of the Glen Shields FC that won the U21 Ontario Provincial Central Championship during their 2014 campaign. In 2013, captained Brams United FC to the U16 Ontario Youth Soccer League Championship, the U16 Ontario Cup Championship and the U16 Canadian National Club Championship. The strong defender was also a member of the U16 Ontario Provincial team in 2012 and 2013. Nicole Gerritz comes to UB after a successful career at Webster Thomas High School, Gerritz earned Most Valuable Player honors after leading her squad to a 13-3-4 overall record and racking up 12 goals and five assists. Gerritz finished her career as a two-time Monroe County first team member, AllGreater Rochester first team member and third team All-State member.

“We are excited to add one of the best players in UB Women’s Soccer history to our staff,” stated second-year head coach Shawn Burke. “We have no doubt that with her knowledge of the game and her relationship with the players that her transition to the coaching ranks will be a seamless one.” Mann closed out her UB career with the best season of her career in 2014, captaining the Bulls to their firstever Mid-American Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Mann finished off her senior campaign starting all 22 matches while also shutting down the opposing teams best offensive threat game in and game out. She also notched a career-best two assists while earning first team All-MAC accolades, Academic All-MAC accolades and NSCAA Scholar All-East Region accolades. Mann’s defensive prowess was unmatched in the MAC last season as she helped the Bulls set the program record for clean sheets in a season (14) along with the longest shutout streak (482 minutes) while constantly defending and shadowing the other teams most dangerous offensive threat. For her career, Mann racked up 79 starts in 80 career matches to go along with three goals and four assists for 10 points. The Buffalo, NY native will be focusing on the development of the young but talented UB midfielders. With Mann’s experience and knowledge of the position, the Bulls midfield should yet again be a strength of the team this upcoming season. Mann graduated from the University at Buffalo in May of 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences – Interdisciplinary Health Services. Mann is also currently working towards her Master’s Degree in Social Work and Public Health at UB.

2000 Bulls bring home school’s first MAC Regular Season Title 20 0 0 was a special year for the UB Women’s Soccer program. With a returning core that featured twotime All-MAC all-star and Buffalo’s all-time leading scorer in Paula Listrani and fellow AllMAC performers in defender Linnea DiNallo, midfielder Elizabeth Pfeffer and goalkeeper Paula Listrani Jaime Adams, the Bulls were already a formi- First Team All-MAC dible team. The freshmen class, featuring Nicole Olszewski and Emily Russell, teamed with Listrani to form a potent offense, and Devon Russell teamed with DiNallo to make one of the league’s stingiest defenses.
The Bulls started off the season with a 7-1 defeat of Canisius as they won their first three games, including a 4-1 win at Niagara. B u f falo d ropp e d its next two contests, non-conference games against Syracuse and Rutgers, but downed Kent State, 4-2, in the MAC opener on Sept. 13, Elizabeth Pfeffer with freshman Olszewski scoring twice in the effort. First Team All-MAC Nine days later, the Bulls lost to Ohio, 2-1, but shook that off, and proceeded to win five straight, with Listrani scoring a goal in double overtime at conference front-runner Western Michigan on October 8. She set the school’s all-time points record.

The team continued to roll behind Listrani, who scored in four-straight games at one point in the year. The Bulls heading into the final weekend with a slim one-game lead in the conference standings. A 1-1 tie with Bowling Green on Oct. 20 kept them in first after Miami (OH) lost a game and the Bulls clinched Linnea DiNallo the title with a 3-1 win against Toledo on Oct. 22. First Team All-MAC Although the Bulls lost to Miami (OH) in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, Buffalo had left its mark as a perennial conference contender, with then head coach Jean-A. Tassy earning the MAC Coach of the Year Award.

MAC Freshman of the Year
2014 was a special year for the UB Women’s Soccer program as the Bulls clinched their first-ever MAC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first-time in program history. The season started out just as good as anyone could have hoped for as the Bulls won four of their first five games. UB was able to earn five straight shutouts over the streak while compiling a 4-0-1 record. The Bulls first loss of the season came against nationally-ranked Virginia Tech without starting keeper Laura Dougall. With the Hookies first goal of the game UB’s program record shutout streak of 482 minutes came to an end. After another loss next time out to Cornell, 3-2, the Bulls began to play their best soccer of the season as they closed out the regular season with an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) while claiming the MAC Regular Season Championship with a conference mark of 9-0-2, just the third unbeaten MAC season in conference history. UB also finished off their first unbeaten home season in program history, going 8-0-1 at UB Stadium. After clinching the regular season title UB entered the MAC Tournament as the #1 seed and didnt disappoint as the hosts. In the opening round UB dominated Toledo, winning 2-0. In the semifinals Andrea Niper scored a double overtime rocket of a goal from 30-yards out to move UB onto the Championship game against Western Michigan. In the MAC Championship game, junior defender Jackie Hall scored in the 82nd minute to give UB their first-ever title and giving the program their first NCAA Tournament berth. The Bulls drew topseeded Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and fell on the road by the score of 4-1 despite a valient effort after losing All-American Jackie Hall to injury late in the first half. UB’s magical season was capped with the Bulls collecting all four major MAC awards, becoming the first team in MAC history to sweep the regular season awards. Katie Roberts earned MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Jackie Hall was MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Laura Dougall was MAC Freshman of the Year and first-year head coach Shawn Burke was named MAC Coach of the Year.

Nov. 5, 2002: A Day to remember Bulls awarded with NCAA Sportsmanship Award UB Women’s soccer team , through the character of their actions following the events of Nov. 5, 2002, was awarded with the Citizenship Through Sports NCAA Award on June 15, 2003. It was on that day that tragedy struck the Bowling Green women’s soccer team as one of its players, Leslie Dawley, collapsed and died on the field in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. The game was halted and resumed the following day with the host Falcons winning 2-1 in double-overtime. However, it was the actions of then head coach Jean-A. Tassy and the UB women’s soccer team on that day that moved Bowling Green to nominate Buffalo for the award. Prior to the start of the game, UB chose to warm up on an adjacent practice field. The team did not want to disturb the area where Dawley had collapsed less that 20 hours earlier and wanted to give Bowling Green some time to reflect as a team. During player introductions, each UB player handed a single yellow rose to their counterpart, exchanging hugs and tears. Following the introductions, the teams joined hands
in a circle in the middle of the field for a moment of silence to honor Dawley. In an excerpt from the nomination letter, Bowling Green representatives wrote: “Everyone that was involved with the events of November 5th and 6th at Bowling Green State University will not soon forget the character and sportsmanship that was displayed by the University at Buffalo’s Women’s Soccer Team and Coaching Staff. It is this type of character and sportsmanship that makes collegiate athletics so great. These acts of compassion by the Buffalo players and coaching staff were not lost on the more than 700 fans that filled the stands that day and a number were heard to comment that they had never witnessed such sportsmanship.” The Citizenship Through Sports Alliance promotes sportsmanship and awards one recipient each year in its 10 member organizations, with one being the NCAA.
