Season Preview BULLS AIM TO GET BACK ON TOP OF THE MAC

DEFENDERS The Bulls continued to rely heavily on their strong defense in 2015 as UB was able to advance to their second straight MAC semifinal for the first time in program history. The Buffalo defense held opponents to 0.86 goals/game (18 total) while allowing just 14.1 shot attempts/game. The UB defense also notched eight cleansheets on the season. The Bulls will be looking to replace three of their starting four on the backline this season as two-time All-MAC defender Jackie Hall and captain Kristin Markiweicz both graduated while standout freshman Brianna Shingary transferred. Senior Angel Hart is the lone returner on the backline as she looks to become an All-MAC performer for the first time in her stellar UB career. UB will be looking to replace three starters on the backline with a group with less experience but a ton of talent and upside. Sophomore Nicole Gerritz made huge strides down the stretch of last season and she will be making the move to defense to help and alleviate some of the pressure of replacing strong defenders while senior Ashley Evans returns for her senior season with the most experience out of the group. Buffalo will be looking for someone to emerge and take over a starting spot on the back end as sophomore Meghan Simmons and redshirt freshman Kayla Hospodka return while Isabella Borini returns after suffering a season-ending injury a season ago. Freshman Gurjeena Jandu and Mairead Martin enter camp with hopes of earning a starting spot as highly recruited talent. MIDFIELDERS The Bulls midfield should be a strength this season as they return three key components from last seasons MAC semifinal team. Senior Andrea Niper returns to her holding defensive midfield position where she flourished in her first season at the position, starting all 21 matches. Junior Julia Benati returns to the Bulls starting lineup after earning second team All-MAC honors last season. One of the most dangerous offensive presences in the MAC, Benati started all 21 matches while netting a careerbest six goals and 15 points, including a team-best five game-winning markers. Junior Moira Petrie returns after coming on strong near the end of last season as she appeared in all 21 matches while making 16 starts in the central midfield for UB. The Alabama transfer finished the season with three assists and 13 shots while earning MAC All-Tournament team honors after her strong play in the MAC Tournament. Vying for some serious time in the midfield this season will be senior Dana Lytle as well as a pair of newcomers in Kara Daly and Cailin Regan. Lytle was a key component off the bench for the Bulls a season ago as she appeared in 20 matches while starting two. The New Jersey native netted her first career game-winning goal in double overtime against Syracuse and she finished the season with a career-best 10 shots. Sophomore Western Kentucky transfer Cailin Regan returns to Western NY after one season with the Hilltoppers as she appeared in six matches while freshman Kara Daly is looked upon to translate her great high school career at Hamburg to success for the Bulls right away. Also adding some depth in the midfield for the Bulls are sophomore Rachel Villalta and freshmen Adrianna VanCuyck and Carley Zoccali. FORWARDS Despite losing leading scorer and All-MAC first team performer Kassidy Kidd to graduation, the Bulls are still very strong up front this season. Leading the Bulls offensive charge will be the crafty senior Celina Carrero who earned second team All-MAC honors last season while ranking third on the Bulls with 12 points (three goals and six assists). The setup artist currently ranks 11th in program history with 13 helpers. Joining Carrero up top is the dangerous sophomore Carissima Cutrona who started 20 games for the Bulls last season. Cutrona showed flashes of being one of the most dangerous players in the conference last season as she finished the year with three goals and five assists for 11 points while

Joining the dynamic duo of Carrero and Cutrona up front are Alex Lambert, Rebecca Bramble and Jessica Marlowe. Lambert and Bramble are coming off of strong campaigns last season in which they produced a spark off the bench while Marlowe showed flashes of strong play in her limited action as a redshirt freshman last season. NEWCOMERS Third-year head coach Shawn Burke announced the signing of five freshman along with one transfer for the upcoming season. Cailin Regan comes to Buffalo after one season at Western Kentucky where she appeared in the midfield in six games while logging 79 minutes of action and notched one shot on goal. Coming out of Akron high school, Regan was a highly touted midfielder from the New York West ODP Team and Empire Revolution club. The four-time WNY ODP team member attended three U.S. Soccer Training events, including two in 2012 when she was invited back to a June session after a strong showing in the January workouts. She played her last three seasons with the Empire Revolution club and was a star for Akron High School since her eighth grade year when she made the varsity squad. In five seasons with Akron, Regan was an All-Niagara Orleans League selection and team MVP four times, named All-State three times and led her squad to a pair of league and Class B championships. She capped her career with a stellar senior season, netting 25 goals and dishing out 20 assists to lead the Niagara Orleans League in scoring. Kara Daly is a WNY native that comes to the Bulls after a very successful high school career at Hamburg High School. The talented forward finished off her impressive career with over 100 goals, setting the school record for goals in a career. She was a five-year member of the Bulldogs and three-year team captain for head coach Tom Zugger. Daly finished off her career earning ECIC First Team accolades four times while also being named All-WNY three times. She also earned team Most Valuable Player honors during her final three seasons at Hamburg. Daly also had a very prosperous club career for the Empire Revolution. Gurjeena Jandu comes to Buffalo from nearby Mississauga, Ontario where she had a successful high school career at John Fraser Secondary School for head coach Brianne Garde. The gritty defender was a two-year team captain while being named team Most Valuable Player three straight seasons. Jandu also had a very successful club career as she has played for the North Mississauga Soccer Club and Dixie Soccer Club over the past 10 seasons. She helped lead North Mississauga to two Ontario Youth Soccer League Championships in 2012 and 2013 while leading Dixie to a championship in 2015. The converted midfielder also was an integral part to North Mississauga earning the USA Cup Championship in 2012. Mairead Martin comes to the Bulls from Mahopac high school where she was a three-year varisty player and one-year team captain under head coach Ross Fumusa. She missed her senior season due to injury but was able to finish her career as a two-time All-League player for the Indians from the center back position. The four-year Scholar Athlete helped lead her team to the 2013 League Championship while being a 2014 Sectionals finalist. Martin has also had a very successful club career for Quickstrike FC under head coach Jesse Kolmel. Adrianna VanCuyck comes to Buffalo from nearby Walworth, NY where she wrapped up a great high school career at Wayne Central for head coach Bill Jordan. VanCuyck was a two-year team captain for the Eagles and she led her team to an 18-2 record last season while notching team-highs in goals (36) and assists (14). Her 36 goals last season were a school record for a single season as she earned third team All-State honors. After her huge senior campaign, VanCuyck was also named All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year while adding her second career Finger Lakes Player of the Year accolades. She has also accumulated a successful club career for the Empire Revolution as she led them to two State Championships in her eight seasons with the club. The mobile midfielder also ran track in high school, earning three League Most Valuable Player awards, breaking eight school records, winning six individual Sectional titles and earning three trips to the State track and field meet. Carley Zoccali comes to the Bulls following a very successful high school career at Rush Henrietta where she played four seasons including one as a team captain. The Midfielder collected 11 goals and four assists as a senior while being named first team All-Monroe County and All-Greater Rochester. Zoccali also earned sixth team All-State recognition after her successful senior campaign. The 5-3 midfielder has also produced at the club level as she played four seasons for the Empire Revolution and one season for the Rochester Futbol Club. While with the Revolution, Zoccali helped her club win the State Cup.

COACHES PROFILE

SHAWN BURKE

Head Coach • Third Season • Mercyhurst ‘02 @UBCoachBurke

2016 UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO WOMEN’S SOCCER

Shawn Burke enters his third season at the helm of the women’s soccer program after leading the squad to their second straight MAC Semifinals in 2015 after guiding the Bulls to their first-ever Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Appearance in 2014, his first season as head coach. Burke helped lead the Bulls to a 11-7-3 overall record in 2015 as well as a 7-3-1 mark in MAC play while helping UB advance to their second straight MAC semifinals. With a career coaching record of 27-10-6 through two seasons at Buffalo, Burke has the highest winning percentage (.698) through two seasons out of any coach in UB women’s soccer history. The Bulls placed five players on the All-MAC squad as Jackie Hall and Kassidy Kidd were named first team while Julia Benati and Celina Carrero earned second team and Brianna Shingary earned All-Freshman team honors. UB also had a strong season in the class as the Bulls placed seven players on the Academic All-MAC squad while Julia Benati, Jackie Hall, Kassidy Kidd and Andrea Niper were all named to the MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete list. UB was the second most improved team in the country in 2014 in Burke’s first season at the helm, going 16-3-3 after a 6-9-3 record in 2013. Burke revived a program that won just 11 games over the past two seasons in 2014 as he was awarded the MAC Coach of the Year award and All-Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year after leading his team to a program-best 16-33 overall record to go along with a perfect 9-0-2 MAC record, just the third unbeaten MAC regular season in conference history. Burke made a lasting imprint on the UB women’s soccer program as he led the squad to a regular season MAC Championship, first-ever MAC Tournament Championship and first-ever NCAA appearance last season. The Bulls broke many school records including shutouts in a season (14) and unbeaten streak (14). The defensive-minded Bulls finished the 2014 season with an 11-0-1 home record, breaking the program record for home wins and recording the first unbeaten home mark since 1995. Burke finished the 2014 campaign tied for the NCAA lead in wins (16) for a first-year head coach and he had the highest winning percentage (.833) out of all first-year head coaches in the country. He helped the Bulls earn a sweep in all MAC major awards following the season as UB won Offensive Player of the Year (Katie Roberts), Defensive Player of the Year (Jackie Hall), Freshman of the Year (Laura Dougall) and Coach of the Year (Burke). The 2014 UB Bulls became the first program in MAC history to sweep all four major awards. Inheriting basically the same squad from 2013 that won six matches, Burke fine-tuned the Bulls roster to turn them into a nationally recognized program. One of the most noticable changes that Burke made was changing MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Jackie Hall, from midfield to center back. Hall blossomed into one of the premier center backs in the country under Burke’s tutelage and prowess as a defensive oriented coach, becoming the first division I All-American in UB Women’s Soccer history. Prior to taking over as head coach at Buffalo, Burke served five years as assistant coach. Serving as the team’s liaison to academic services, Burke helped the Bulls reach new heights in the classroom. Over his five season’s, the UB women’s soccer program has been one of the top teams on campus, accumulating over a 3.20 team grade point average in each season. Following the 2011 season, junior defender Shannon Algoe was named to the Capital One Academic AllAmerican second team, becoming the first Bull to do so under Burke’s guidance. Algoe earned a 4.0 GPA and was one of 33 players recognized on the All-American teams. UBBULLS.COM

The forward pairing of Kassidy Kidd and Celina Carrero cominbed to net nine goals and 12 assists while earning first team and second team All-MAC accolades under Rouse’s watchful eye. Rouse also helped Carissima Cutrona turn into a scoring threat in the midfield as she was able to net three goals and five assists for 11 points during her first season in Buffalo. Prior to ASU Rouse served two years as assistant coach at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, College Prep Boarding school in Minnesota. As a player, Rouse starred at the University of Minnesota where she earned All-Big Ten honors twice. 2000 Bulls bring home school’s first MAC Regular Season Title 20 0 0 was a special year for the UB Women’s Soccer program. With a returning core that featured twotime All-MAC all-star and Buffalo’s all-time leading scorer in Paula Listrani and fellow AllMAC performers in defender Linnea DiNallo, midfielder Elizabeth Pfeffer and goalkeeper Paula Listrani Jaime Adams, the Bulls were already a formi- First Team All-MAC dible team. The freshmen class, featuring Nicole Olszewski and Emily Russell, teamed with Listrani to form a potent offense, and Devon Russell teamed with DiNallo to make one of the league’s stingiest defenses.

The Bulls started off the season with a 7-1 defeat of Canisius as they won their first three games, including a 4-1 win at Niagara. B u f falo d ropp e d its next two contests, non-conference games against Syracuse and Rutgers, but downed Kent State, 4-2, in the MAC opener on Sept. 13, Elizabeth Pfeffer with freshman Olszewski scoring twice in the effort. First Team All-MAC Nine days later, the Bulls lost to Ohio, 2-1, but shook that off, and proceeded to win five straight, with Listrani scoring a goal in double overtime at conference front-runner Western Michigan on October 8. She set the school’s all-time points record.

The team continued to roll behind Listrani, who scored in four-straight games at one point in the year. The Bulls heading into the final weekend with a slim one-game lead in the conference standings. A 1-1 tie with Bowling Green on Oct. 20 kept them in first after Miami (OH) lost a game and the Bulls clinched Linnea DiNallo the title with a 3-1 win against Toledo on Oct. 22. First Team All-MAC Although the Bulls lost to Miami (OH) in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, Buffalo had left its mark as a perennial conference contender, with then head coach Jean-A. Tassy earning the MAC Coach of the Year Award.

2014 was a special year for the UB Women’s Soccer program as the Bulls clinched their first-ever MAC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first-time in program history. The season started out just as good as anyone could have hoped for as the Bulls won four of their first five games. UB was able to earn five straight shutouts over the streak while compiling a 4-0-1 record. The Bulls first loss of the season came against nationally-ranked Virginia Tech without starting keeper Laura Dougall. With the Hookies first goal of the game UB’s program record shutout streak of 482 minutes came to an end. After another loss next time out to Cornell, 3-2, the Bulls began to play their best soccer of the season as they closed out the regular season with an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) while claiming the MAC Regular Season Championship with a conference mark of 9-0-2, just the third unbeaten MAC season in conference history. UB also finished off their first unbeaten home season in program history, going 8-0-1 at UB Stadium. After clinching the regular season title UB entered the MAC Tournament as the #1 seed and didnt disappoint as the hosts. In the opening round UB dominated Toledo, winning 2-0. In the semifinals Andrea Niper scored a double overtime rocket of a goal from 30-yards out to move UB onto the Championship game against Western Michigan. In the MAC Championship game, junior defender Jackie Hall scored in the 82nd minute to give UB their first-ever title and giving the program their first NCAA Tournament berth. The Bulls drew topseeded Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and fell on the road by the score of 4-1 despite a valient effort after losing All-American Jackie Hall to injury late in the first half. UB’s magical season was capped with the Bulls collecting all four major MAC awards, becoming the first team in MAC history to sweep the regular season awards. Katie Roberts earned MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Jackie Hall was MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Laura Dougall was MAC Freshman of the Year and first-year head coach Shawn Burke was named MAC Coach of the Year.

Jackie Hall - First Division I All-American

Nov. 5, 2002: A Day to remember Bulls awarded with NCAA Sportsmanship Award UB Women’s soccer team , through the character of their actions following the events of Nov. 5, 2002, was awarded with the Citizenship Through Sports NCAA Award on June 15, 2003. It was on that day that tragedy struck the Bowling Green women’s soccer team as one of its players, Leslie Dawley, collapsed and died on the field in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. The game was halted and resumed the following day with the host Falcons winning 2-1 in double-overtime. However, it was the actions of then head coach Jean-A. Tassy and the UB women’s soccer team on that day that moved Bowling Green to nominate Buffalo for the award. Prior to the start of the game, UB chose to warm up on an adjacent practice field. The team did not want to disturb the area where Dawley had collapsed less that 20 hours earlier and wanted to give Bowling Green some time to reflect as a team. During player introductions, each UB player handed a single yellow rose to their counterpart, exchanging hugs and tears. Following the introductions, the teams joined hands in a circle in the middle of the field for a moment of silence to honor Dawley. In an excerpt from the nomination letter, Bowling Green representatives wrote: “Everyone that was involved with the events of November 5th and 6th at Bowling Green State University will not soon forget the character and sportsmanship that was displayed by the University at Buffalo’s Women’s Soccer Team and Coaching Staff. It is this type of character and sportsmanship that makes collegiate athletics so great. These acts of compassion by the Buffalo players and coaching staff were not lost on the more than 700 fans that filled the stands that day and a number were heard to comment that they had never witnessed such sportsmanship.”
