Editor’s Note On the cover of this issue is one of our favorite photos of Kerstin, the founder of Buffalo Exchange. She is standing in front of the original Buffalo Exchange here in Tucson in 1974 or 1975. I was 9 or 10. We thought it might be time to take a new photo of us, so we’re sharing one here so you can see us as we are ‘in the now’. Kerstin still comes to work every day and is an integral part of our company. And, after 45 years, we are humbled by the love of our customers and employees, some of whom are featured in this issue. Remaining vibrant and creative is the best way we know to move forward, and what keeps us going. We’ve reached such a milestone because of our customers, so, thank you! Enjoy this 15th edition of our zine, complete with some history, some old advertisements from the time before cheap color, and some awesome men’s fashion (for once!). We hope to see you in March (16-17) for the 45th Anniversary celebration in our stores!

Finding the joy in your closet By Jessica Pruitt

A Sit-down with Star Hansen

Star Hansen is a professional clutter whisperer and closet organizer extraordinaire. If we just listen closely enough, she says, our clothing has a lot of things to say to us – some of it good and some of it bad. She describes herself as an aspiring minimalist and, like Marie Kondo, believes that you should only keep the items that make you feel good. But how to go about figuring out what those items are and cleaning out the rest? That’s where Star comes in. Talk to Your Closet In Star’s opinion, many of us have a monster (or several of them) living in our closets. Every single thing we own has a voice, she says. Some of the voices are joyous, saying, “We feel great when we wear this T-shirt!” Others not so much – for example, the sweater your ex gave you or the pair of jeans that is several sizes too small. “The monster in our closet is the deeper stories and truths within our physical stuff,” says Star. Instead of making us feel great, these items often serve to remind us of bad feelings and unresolved situations. But First, Shop! Before you start cleaning out your closet, Star recommends taking some time to figure out what your style is. “The closet has to do with how you see yourself, so it’s important to figure out what that means to you,” says Star. Shop online, stalk your favorite fashion icons

on Instagram and create a Pinterest board. Or, even better, go shopping! The #1 thing that holds people back from cleaning out their closets? Not having the right things to wear, she says. As a result, we end up holding onto “safety clothing” – things that we don’t like but are better than nothing. Categorize, Categorize, Categorize Once you’re ready to do a wardrobe overhaul, Star recommends taking everything out of your closet. Remember – being messy is an essential part of organizing! Then, start placing everything into categories and sub-categories – the more, the better. Skirts, pants, dresses, shoes, for example, then dress pants, kickaround pants, lounge pants, etc. At this point, don’t worry about making any decisions. In Star’s own closet, she has more than 30 categories in just her primary closet space.

The Triangle of Power If you stand in front of your closet and put your arms in a V out in front of you, everything you wear regularly should fit there – the triangle of power, as Star calls it. Anything else should get the boot. If it’s a sentimental item like a T-shirt you wore to a cancer run or your wedding dress, it should be boxed up. Special occasion items that you wear once a year? Those should also go somewhere else. “When we have too much,” explains Star, “we actually can’t use the things that we really love.” As it turns out, getting in touch with your closet entails a lot of getting in touch with yourself. “Organizing is this beautiful tool we can use to see what’s working in our lives and what’s not working in our lives,” she says. When we clean out the clothing that we don’t wear, we honor those things that really bring us joy and make space to move forward. Take them to Buffalo Exchange, give them a new life and find something that works for you, advises Star. “Trust that letting go is going to bring in something good,” she says. Want to find out more? Check out Star’s recent Ted Talk – Listen to the Monster in Your Closet.

Quick Tips from Star! Categorize by Function, Not Color: Don’t be a color-coding junky. This makes it much easier to find what you need! Plan for the Worst: For the days when you have no time to put things away, keep a clean clothes hamper. Create a Catalog: If you have tons of vintage or one-of-a-kind pieces that you only wear once a year, create a catalog with photos, then store them elsewhere. You can shop your own catalog! Use Closet Rod Dividers: Keep your closet’s categories organized by labeling each section with a divider ring.

Trends We Loved and Still Do

Albuquerque 6 QUICK

Questions ... with longtime customer Dionne

How would you describe your style? Classic (vintage) and French. From the cigarette pant to the little black dress, tried and true fashion is always in style. What are your favorite trends right now? Florals, ruffles, various blush, emerald and neutral tones. Simplicity with its own atmosphere. What are your spring/summer must-haves? The little white dress. Nude heels. A great hat.

What are your favorite Buffalo finds? A bracelet made of vintage buttons that inspired me to create my own bracelets, a hunter green retro cape that goes with everything, and a 1920s dress ̶ I often dream about where it has been. What is your best style advice? * Don’t judge a garment by how it hangs on a hanger * If it doesn’t make you look and feel fabulous, if you’re on the fence about it ̶ leave it * When in doubt, wear black * Less is more * Step out of your comfort zone and try something new ̶ you will thank yourself later

6 QUICK

Questions ... with Buffalo buyer & fashion writer Neka

How would you describe your style? My answer used to be “I just put clothes on and hope it makes sense,” but working for Buffalo Exchange has changed that. I definitely do have style. I might not know what it’s called, but it does exist! What are your favorite trends right now? The ruffle set! When I was 8 my mom made me a set that reminds me so much of this trend. Also bustiers and belts over dresses. It’s ultra-feminine and romantic, but also really flattering. What are your spring/summer must-have pieces? Asymmetrical/flowy off-the-shoulder tops & 1980s style jackets.

What do you love about working at Buffalo Exchange? It has helped me overcome the apprehension I had to approaching my own personal style. Also, as a fashion writer, I’ve always felt introverted. Sitting behind a computer all day writing for web-based retailers gave me virtually no exposure to fashion. Buffalo, with its different fashion genres, labels and brands, gives great exposure to a variety of fashion daily. What is your advice for someone who’s interested in a fashion-related job? Be creative with fashion every chance you get ̶ experiment! Shop often and play around with fashion to help you get the confidence to go for whatever fashion-related job you want. What is your best style advice? Don’t overthink it. Just wear it.

How would you describe your personal style? Random! I play dress-up a lot, so I almost feel like a different character every time I put on an outfit. I guess I’d say feminine, colorful and playful. What is your favorite trend for spring 2019? Colors and patterns. I recently bought a bright yellow bag and I absolutely love how bright it is. What do you love about shopping at Buffalo? Being able to find multiple brands in one spot that are half the price and in perfect condition! It saves me a lot of time and money. What’s your favorite Buffalo find? A vintage oversized leopard blazer I style with almost everything in my closet. I’m hooked on anything leopard. What’s your best piece of style advice? I used to be a size six, then I got older and my body changed. Instead of embracing my new body, I insisted on squeezing my body into a size six even though it clearly wasn’t my size anymore. I looked ridiculous and it was very unflattering. Moral of the story: Embrace your curves, wear your size. Be comfortable!

How would you describe your personal style? Clean, business/hipster, waist = snatched and androgynous at times. What is your favorite trend for spring 2019? The bright neon color trend. I rarely wear bright colors, but I like to get out of my comfort zone so I'll use neon as the color statement in my outfits. What do you love about shopping at Buffalo? I never know what I will be leaving with. I enter the store with a basic idea of what I am looking for, but almost every time, I find something I wasn’t looking for. I fall in love with this item and know I will wear it for a really long time. What’s your favorite Buffalo find? My Nike Cortez shoes that I’m wearing in my sailor outfit! What’s your best piece of style advice? Remember that every piece can serve more than one purpose if you allow it to. If you can attach it, drape it or hold it up to your body, then you can wear it. Use your imagination and remember that there is no limit.

“The biggest shift in my sense of style has come from being inspired by my coworkers. Each one is confident, stylish, and driven, and most importantly, themselves

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m all about being unusual and attracting people’s attention! My fun personality is the inspiration behind all my fashion choices. I love wearing items that are hard to find and entertaining to look at. I often receive questions like “where did you get that from?”, “where do you shop?”, “how did you put that outfit together?” My style represents versatility, confidence, and rarity.

What is your favorite trend for Spring 2019?

A monochromatic look! It’s so chic, classic and is often incorporated in runway looks.

What are the top 5 must-have items you're looking to add to your wardrobe this spring?

Fun sunglasses, designer handbags, fragrance, rings and chains.

What do you love about shopping at Buffalo Exchange?

I live in Buffalo Exchange and like to call it my second home. If you want to be in the latest trends while being on a budget, Buffalo Exchange is the perfect place to discover. It’s reasonable prices, on-the-spot trading, and selling of clothes and accessories makes this my go-to spot when shopping.

What's your favorite Buffalo find?

My Woolrich gray and red customized overalls. It was love at first sight, I just had to buy them. Today that outfit is one of the most liked outfits on my Instagram page.

What's your best piece of style advice?

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to your outfits. If you feel like your outfit looks outstanding with many patterns and colors, rock that outfit. Photos by Tracy Awino, Gloria Johnson and Katherine Berroa

Photos by: Chase Lett @chasealett

Style Profile: @AnaxMolina How would you describe your personal style?

I would say it’s an “Americanized French Style”. Trendy pieces simplified. I love minimal fashion and my secret is to spice it up with accessories. I like participating in current fashion trends, but still give it my personal twist and make it easy to recreate.,

What is your favorite trend for Spring 2019?

I love that neutral earth tones are back: cream, tan, sand. And layering pieces with different shades from that color family.

What are the top 5 must-have items you're looking to add to your wardrobe this spring?

Midi skirts, open shoes, lightweight jackets, linen dresses, and vintage button blouses!

What do you love about shopping at Buffalo Exchange?

I appreciate how they carefully pick the items to sell. It’s guaranteed that, every time you go in, you will find tons of super cute items! The prices are affordable and you never know what you will find; it’s like treasure hunting! Plus, you’re actually doing great things for the planet by shopping recycled fashion.

What's your favorite Buffalo find?

I’ve found the best vintage Levi’s at Buffalo Exchange and a camel teddy bear coat that’s like a moto jacket. Every time I wear it, I get so many compliments and it’s so cozy. I’ve also scored so many amazing vintage rompers and contemporary blouses. It’s hard to pick just one!

What's your best piece of style advice?

Take items that are trendy but aim to style them in your personal way. This will make the pieces look even more cute. It took me a while to figure this out. Just because it’s trendy doesn’t mean you HAVE to have it. You will stand out more if you wear what speaks to you instead of wearing what everyone else is.
